Boxing legend Floyd Mayweather, 43, to fight in Tokyo on February 28 on same show as MMA event ‘MEGA 2021’

FLOYD MAYWEATHER is set to make another sporting comeback – but it may not be boxing.
The Money attended a press conference to confirm his appearance at a show in Tokyo on February 28.

Floyd Mayweather is set for another return to sporting action in Tokyo in February

But it is still unclear whether the 43-year-old will be stepping into the boxing ring or the mixed martial arts octagon.
He would be on the same show as new MMA event MEGA 2021 at the Tokyo Dome.
talkSPORT boxing editor Michael Benson tweeted: “Floyd Mayweather will return to the ring for a fight at Tokyo Dome on Feb 28th.
“Details scarce, but Floyd called into a presser to announce he would compete on same show as new MMA event ‘MEGA 2021’.”

Mayweather has had one professional boxing bout since 2015 as he came back to dispatch Conor McGregor in 2017 to seal his 50-0 record.
He hasn’t been involved in any fight since blasting away kickboxer Tenshin Nasukawa in an exhibition on New Year’s Eve in Tokyo in 2018.
SunSport exclusively revealed in July that Mayweather – who won 15 world titles during his glittering career – was in talks about a comeback fight in the Far East.
The American himself then confirmed the news, however due to the coronavirus crisis, he has not been able to lace up the gloves again this year.

The Money appeared at a press conference for the MEGA 2021 event held at the Tokyo Dome on February 28

And then speaking on his Instagram last week, he added that he would be heading to Tokyo to fight.
Speaking to his 24million followers, he said: “Tokyo, Japan. I am coming back in 2021.
“I know the Olympics is in Japan in 2021 but me, myself, Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather and my team will be doing something big in Tokyo Dome.
“Trust line, I want to say thank you for treating me good and treating my team good. Japan, I am on my way.”

Terence Crawford open to crossover fight with Conor McGregor as ‘money talks’ and UFC star ‘not a real good wrestler’

TERENCE CRAWFORD admitted he would face Conor McGregor as ‘money talks’ and said the UFC star is ‘not a real good wrestler’.
Crawford, who defends his WBO welterweight title against Kell Brook, was subject to talks with McGregor earlier this year.

His promoter Bob Arum wanted to speak with UFC boss about a pair of crossover fights, one in the boxing ring and the other inside the octagon.
But Crawford, 33, who wrestled during high school, would be willing to make the move over to MMA to challenge McGregor, 32, if the cash was right.
He told TMZ Sports: “They put that money up, hell yeah I’ll go over there and fight him.
“Conor is a big talent in the Octagon, and I’m a big talent in the boxing ring. Money talks.

“To keep it real, Conor’s not a real good wrestler. He may kick the s*** out of you.
“You gotta worry about them kicks to the head and them elbows more than him grabbing you.
“It’d be other things that you’d be having to worry about other than wrestling you.”
Crawford had never before shown an interest in switching to the UFC before Arum announced plans to negotiate a deal with White.

Despite the idea, the promoters appeared to have never discussed the two-fight proposal.
White did help promote McGregor’s lucrative boxing debut in 2017 which he lost in ten rounds against Floyd Mayweather.
White himself is still in talks with 43-year-old Mayweather, who is contemplating a comeback.
McGregor’s also appears to have a future in the boxing business having revealed talks to fight Manny Pacquaio, 41.
For now, he is instead plotting a return to the UFC to rematch Dustin Poirier – who he beat in 2014 – with the duo offered a headliner in January.
Afterwards, McGregor wants to fight Pacquaio, and will use his bout against southpaw Poirier, 31, to prepare for left-hander PacMan.

UFC chief Dana White ‘forced to AXE ZUFFA Boxing promotion debut on December 11 in Las Vegas due to coronavirus’

DANA WHITE has been forced to shelve ZUFFA Boxing’s inaugural event amid challenges posed by coronavirus, reports say.
The UFC president has long planned to make a move into the boxing business as a promoter.

And according to Journal de Montreal, White planned to stage the Claressa Shields vs Marie-Eve Dicaire title fight on December 11 in Las Vegas.
But, the proposal has now been axed due to problems caused by the Covid-19 crisis, The Athletic state.
And no rescheduling date has emerged either in a blow to Shields and other women champions like Amanda Serrano.
Before the UFC allowed Conor McGregor to fight boxing legend Floyd Mayweather in 2017, White first revealed plans to launch ZUFFA Boxing.

ZUFFA is an American sports promotion company owned by his close friends Frank and Lorenzo Ferttita.
The Ferttita brothers sold the UFC to WME-IMG – now known as Endeavor – for $4.4BILLION in 2016.
But White still wanted to launch a boxing promotion with ZUFFA and has been working on the scheme ever since.

Despite several hurdles since announcing the plan three years ago, the UFC boss told BT Sports his jump into boxing seems imminent.

He said in September: “I peaked under the hood a lot there for the last year.
“Looked at different things and I said, ‘I don’t know man, I don’t know if this is fixable.’
“Funny enough, since the pandemic I’ve been looking at other options too.
“And we’ll probably have something to announce here soon. When it’s time, I’ll let you know, I’m not ready yet.

Conor McGregor fighting ‘one of the greatest boxers of all time’ Manny Pacquiao is ‘bonkers’, says UFC legend Joe Rogan

CONOR McGREGOR fighting ‘one of the greatest boxers of all time’ in Manny Pacquiao is ‘bonkers’, says UFC legend Joe Rogan.
McGregor made the surprise announcement in September that he was in talks to face Pacquiao in the Middle East.

Instead, the Irishman appears set to return to the UFC after being offered a January 23 headliner against Dustin Poirier at lightweight.
McGregor, 32, later revealed he would use the fight against southpaw Poirier, 31, to help him prepare for fellow left-hander Pacquiao, 41.
But UFC commentator and podcast king Rogan fears for his chances against the eight-division, Filipino icon.
He said: “They’re actually talking about him fighting Conor McGregor right now, which is kind of bonkers.

“You’re talking about one of the greatest boxers of all time against a guy with one professional boxing match.”
The bout Rogan refers to is McGregor’s lucrative 2017 debut against Floyd Mayweather, which he lost in ten rounds.
Rogan went on to explain how the former two-weight UFC champion impressed against Mayweather, but was completely outfoxed by the masterful American legend.
He said: “Let me explain something to you. The reason why it was close was because Mayweather let him blow his wad.

Floyd Mayweather beat McGregor in 2017 Credit: Reuters

“Look, he clipped Mayweather with a legit left uppercut early in the fight and I was kind of stunned. I was like ‘Wow, that’s really legit.’”
“Here’s the thing, Mayweather had to figure out Conor’s timing. Because what Conor is, Conor is not a professional boxer, OK?
“So, because he’s not a professional boxer, he’s not as efficient and he’s going to get tired easier.
“Mayweather is one of the greatest, if not the greatest, boxer of all time. I say there’s a really good argument that he’s the greatest of all time.
“Because he’s undefeated, 50-0, and really only been hurt by ‘Sugar’ Shane Mosley and [Marcos] Maidana.
“But, Conor is a freak. He is an explosive guy. He’s so fast and there’s no remedy for that other than getting a guy tired.
“So, what Mayweather was doing was boxing with him but preserving. Being safe, got clipped a couple times, realised Conor could punch.
“Conor can punch, but just drag him into deep water. Drag him into deep water and that’s what a guy like Mayweather will do.”

Watch amazing footage of Conor McGregor destroying world boxing champion Patrick Hyland in the octagon

ANY boxer planning to try their hand at MMA may want to think twice following throwback footage of Conor McGregor sparring Patrick Hyland.
Hyland is no stranger to a scrap after being crowned the boxing WBF featherweight champion in 2011.

    [embedded content]

Conor McGregor, in red, destroyed Hyland in the Octagon

The UFC star showed no mercy on the former boxing champ

McGregor, right, caught Hyland with a few jabs
But he looked a fish out of water after stepping inside the cage to take on the Notorious as his Straight Blast Gym in Dublin.
With the pair padded up, McGregor instantly went straight for the body and took Hyland down to the canvas.

The 36-year-old fellow Irishman knew he was in instant trouble and can be heard shouting: “What do I do? I don’t know what to do.”
McGregor, who has not fought since knocking out Donald Cerrone in January, remains in total control of their session and even takes it easy on his opponent.
Hyland showed glimpses of the fighter he once was by throwing a couple of testing jabs but nothing to trouble the former UFC featherweight and lightweight champ.
McGregor even managed to laugh at the boxer when Hyland attempted a takedown of his own.

The footage was leaked online by the 32-year-old’s head coach John Kavanagh but Hyland appeared to take the beating in good spirits.
The same can’t be said about McGregor’s former sparring partner Paulie Malignaggi who had a major fallout with the Notorious over a leaked sparring video in 2017.

McGregor is back training again as he looks close to confirming his impeding return to the UFC.
According to UFC president Dana White, he has a deal in place to rematch Dustin Poirier, who he beat at featherweight in 2014.
The pair were offered a lightweight headliner to take place on January 23, with McGregor already preparing for the southpaw matchup.

Conor McGregor backs Mike Tyson’s retirement U-turn at 54 after boxing legend claims he was ‘revived by gods of war’

CONOR McGREGOR has backed Mike Tyson’s retirement U-turn after the heavyweight legend claimed he was ‘revived by the gods of war’.
Tyson is set to face Roy Jones Jr in an eight-round exhibition this month, marking his first fight in 15 years.

Conor McGregor has backed Mike Tyson’s retirement U-turn

The 54-year-old explained his comeback came after his passion was sparked back into life and now he wants to show age is just a number.
He told Jim Gray: “Old guys, that word don’t even make sense. Old? This is just a new time, a new thinking period in our lives.
“This is what we want to do. Sometimes the gods of war, they revive you and say, ‘You have to do more.’
“Now I wouldn’t do it if I didn’t prepare for this. You know, I box people to see if I’m able to do this stuff, so I can do this stuff.

“[My skills are] good enough for this. Good enough to go eight rounds. I’m exerting myself, and this is going to be pretty interesting.
“I’m interested in waiting to see what happens as well.”
The words of wisdom had the approval of former UFC champion McGregor, who tweeted: “Hear! Hear!”

Irishman McGregor, 32, was also vocal about encouraging Anderson Silva, 45, to continue his career after the Brazilian’s farewell fight in the UFC.

He posted: “Real fighters never lose that fire so why try to force it out?
“Simply put time into finding the correct competition and continue on. The right competition is out there, for all levels and ages.

Conor McGregor’s career earnings from £2.5million-a-fight in UFC, £80m from Mayweather bout and £750m whiskey business

WITH Conor McGregor deciding to come out of retirement for the third time in four years, it’s clear to see it’s not for the money.
Since debuting in the UFC in 2013, the Irish star – who is set to fight Dustin Poirier in January – has transcended the sport and has become one of the richest fighters in the world along the way.

But not only does McGregor rake in the cash through competing, his sponsorship deals and business ventures go a long way in making up his estimated Forbes net worth of £80MILLION.
From becoming the highest paid UFC fighter of all time, a historic crossover fight with Floyd Mayweather and a £750m whiskey business – here is how McGregor earned his cash.
    UFC CHEQUES
When the UFC sold for $4.4bn in 2016, McGregor credited his exploits as the driving force behind the deal – and he might be right.
The Irishman did not headline a pay-per-view until his sixth bout, but still landed around £400,000 through fight night purses and bonuses.

After back-to-back featherweight titles wins against Chad Mendes and then Jose Aldo in 2015, McGregor pocketed £400,000 for each fight.
In his following bout, losing Nate Diaz in 2016, he received his first million dollar pay cheque, but tripled his money after winning the rematch.
After beating Eddie Alvarez to become the UFC’s first two-weight champion, McGregor pocketed £2.4m following his purse and performance bonus.

His next two fights, against Khabib Nurmagomedov and Donald Cerrone, he was paid £2.3m, but took home an extra £40,000 for knocking out ‘Cowboy’ at UFC 246.

It takes McGregor’s total earnings from UFC purses and fight night bonuses to around £12m – but his actual profits are much higher.
A large part of his money earned through UFC fights comes in PPV bonuses.
For his loss against Nurmagomedov in 2018, McGregor revealed he made £40m, with reports suggesting he received the same for beating Cerrone.
But his crossover boxing match against Mayweather dwarfs anything he made in the octagon, with The Notorious said to have earned £80million on his ring debut.

    WHISKEY BUSINESS
In 2018, McGregor unleashed Proper No. Twelve into the crowded whiskey market, and that raked in £750m in its first year.
Before tapping out to Nurmagomedov at UFC 229, he became a one-stop promotional tool for Proper No. 12, every press conference saw him clutching a bottle gleefully.
When it finally came to launching the drink on a dry run at the end of 2018, it completely sold out.
In fact at one point it became so popular that Tesco Ireland customers were only allowed to buy two bottles at a time.
And the showman’s penchant as a salesman must’ve paid off when he revealed the official figures in its first year of business.
Taking to Instagram, McGregor wrote: “Over $1b generated in Whiskey sales in my first year! Like it or not, there is a new King in town! Proper Whiskey, liquid sunshine!”
The whiskey is such a hit in America the company sold six months’ worth of stock in its first 10 days of trading.
It eventually sold 2.4m bottles in the first six months of trading.
McGregor predicts it will overtake Ireland’s biggest distillery Jameson – which has been in business for 250 years.

    HE’S IN FASHION
Known for his sharp suits and tongue, McGregor, who once called David Beckham his fashion icon, has always enjoyed splashing his cash on fashion.
Before he boxed Mayweather in 2017, the Irishman was seen in various suits designed by David August Heil – a man responsible for ensuring the likes of Sylvester Stallone, Will Smith, and Robert Downey Jr are red carpet-ready.
At one fitting the pair decided that they should collaborate together.
After a delay, the ‘Drop 1 Look Book’ collection saw the release of limited edition t-shirts, hoodies and caps.
Incredibly, the clobber – costing roughly between £40-£120 – sold out in just a day.
Heil told The Irish Sun: “Our audience is seriously committed and loyal.
“We sold out of a couple of styles within the first 24 hours of launching the site and we didn’t really promote it other than our immediate followers and Conor’s fanbase.”
August McGregor later introduced tailored suits to their range, as well as winter jackets as his empire continues to grow.
It has been estimated that the clothing line brings in a staggering £50m in profits per year.

    SPONSORSHIPS AND THE DIGITAL AGE
In 2018, upon a signing a multi-million pound six-fight deal with the UFC, McGregor renewed a contract with Monster Energy drinks worth somewhere in the region of £750,000-per-year.
Brand McGregor also appealed to Reebok, who made him one of their most high-profile athletes and offered him around £4m per year.
And digitally, McGregor knows what’s up when it comes to selling himself.
He has investments in tech products like The MacTalk App, which allows fans to download McGregor soundbites for £1.09 a pop, as well as his own website, TheMacLife.com – a MMA media outlet and news website dedicated to the man, who can’t help but generate money with his name.
