“CHILLED” Lewis Hamilton hailed the work of his Mercedes team to improve their car after the successful French Grand Prix. Hamilton and team-mate George Russell have been lagging behind their Red Bull and Ferrari rivals all season due to their underperforming, porpoising vehicles.

He was all smiles after picking up P2 in Le Castellet
However, the pair finished second and third respectively at the Circuit Paul Ricard on Sunday in their best result of the year.
And Hamilton is clearly a lot happier with how things are going thanks to the work done by the engineers back at the factory and on race days.
He posted a picture of him lying down in the waiting room at the end of the French GP, captioning it: “Chilling.”
And the seven-time world champ also added another tweet with celebratory snaps alongside Russell in the baking hot sunshine in Le Castellet.

The French GP was Hamilton’s 300th start in Formula One – and he confessed he could get to 400 before retiring from the sport.
The Brit, 37, has 18 months left to run on his current deal with Mercedes with boss Toto Wolff revealing he has started negotiations with the Stevenage star.
Hamilton said: “That is a lot of races. I just want to be grateful to get to this point.
“But I still feel fresh and there is plenty of fuel in the tank. I am enjoying the process and arriving every day and working with this group of people.

Hamilton now has four podiums in a row, although is still down in sixth in the drivers’ standings on 127 points – Max Verstappen leads the way on 233 and looks certain to win back-to-back titles.
Lewis’ team-mate Russell, meanwhile, pounced after a virtual safety car to stun moaning Sergio Perez and snatch the final place on the podium.

His last victory was back in Saudi Arabia in December when he was battling for the title with Max Verstappen.
But he could not get close to the Dutchman’s Red Bull here in France or the Ferrari of pole-sitter Charles Leclerc, as Mercedes’ latest set of upgraded parts failed to propel Hamilton into a contender.
Hamilton, who starts today tomorrow in fourth, was almost a second off Leclerc’s pole time.

“I am not sure why that gap has got bigger over these two races. They [Leclerc and Verstappen] are in their own league in that respect performance wise.

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff, who shoulders the responsibility for his team’s poor start to the season as their car design has thrown up problem after problem.
Too slow, too much bouncing at high speed… In fact the only thing they have got right is the reliability.
Wolff’s team is playing a gamble of trying to fettle their car in an attempt to unlock its potential.
He said: “We knew that once we got the new tyres on and we were driving the car in anger, that we would be there in a third and fourth, like we have been all season.
“But it’s just not good enough. You can see that when you are on the back foot, your expectations are on a certain level for the race weekend and it doesn’t come together, a kind of free-styling starts.
“It was mainly experimenting with rear wing levels and also tyre temperatures. But in the end the overall package is just not quick enough.
“Lewis did an immense job. He’s probably extracted more than the car has at the moment.”

Leclerc, who started his racing career less than an hour away from this circuit in the south of France, was cheered by the crowd as he took the 16th pole of his career and the seventh of the season.
He did it with a huge helping hand from his Ferrari team-mate Carlos Sainz, who provided a textbook tow to punch a hole in the air and catapult Leclerc into an excellent finish to his second flying lap.
Sainz, who was already starting at the back of the grid due to engine penalties following his fire in Austria, was sacrificed for Leclerc’s benefit as he played the perfect wingman.
Leclerc said: “It was a great lap. I’ve struggled all weekend to put a lap together and I managed it, but I have to say that I also had the help of Carlos, and that was amazing teamwork.
“Without Carlos it would have been much closer. I hope that he can join us back in the fight for the win tomorrow.”
Meanwhile, Verstappen, who starts in second on the grid, added: “With the conditions it is very difficult to know what is happening.

LEWIS HAMILTON will notch up his 300th F1 GP this weekend in France – and says his toughest opponent was his first – Fernando Alonso.The pair were team-mates at McLaren in 2007 but that year ended in a bitter bust-up, with the Spaniard leaving after only one season.

Hamilton has since gone on to win a record-equalling seven world championships, and it could have been eight had he not been pipped in controversial circumstances by his latest bitter rival Max Verstappen.
But when asked by SunSport who his most fierce opponent was, Hamilton was in no doubt.

“We had some good battles. I wish we could have more and hopefully he is going to continue to race so we can have more in the future.”
Alonso, who made his debut in 2001 and won the title in 2005 and 2006, paid tribute to Hamilton.
Alonso said: “I don’t think he has changed. He had the talent in 2007 and he still has the talent now.
“With the experience he has been a tremendous driver, a legend of our sport. It has always been a pleasure to share all this time with him.”

But Sir Lewis will be forced to sit out the first practice session at the French GP due to a little-known rule, it has been revealed.
For the 2022 season, all ten teams are required to run a “young driver” in two FP1 sessions.
A driver who meets the rookie criteria is 2019 F2 and 2020-21 Formula E champion Nyck de Vries, and he will replace Hamilton in Friday’s FP1.
Mercedes statement read: “Nyck de Vries will be driving in place of Lewis Hamilton in FP1.
“Over the course of the season, each driver is required to give up one of their first practice sessions for a young driver.

Rosberg said to Eurosport: “It [the friendship breakdown] happened immediately when we were fighting for the world championship, not before.
“But that’s always the case: When you’re fighting for success in every race and for titles, it doesn’t work anymore.
“It was a build-up from one race to the next. If you want to decide the world championship for yourself, you can’t play ‘love, peace and harmony’.
“You have to test limits and go into grey areas to win, especially when two drivers are at such a high level. Then it often gets tight.”

But Rosberg has no regrets about how things went down despite losing Hamilton as a pal.
The pair are now neutral, and that’s good enough for Rosberg who admits he’s proud to have participated in the epic battle with one of the sport’s best.
He added: “I don’t regret anything from the battle with Lewis.
“That was a sensational time and a mega fight. I’m very proud of that. In the meantime, we’ve returned to neutral, which is okay.”
