LEWIS HAMILTON has warned championship leader Max Verstappen he will be back to fighting for race victories after the summer break.The seven-time World Champion finished second behind the Dutchman at Sunday’s Hungarian Grand Prix.

Verstappen produced a magnificent drive to win the race from 10th thanks in part to another Ferrari strategy mishap.
But Hamilton, who also finished the race with the fastest lap, vowed to be back fighting the championship front-runners on the other side of the summer break.
He told Sky Sports after the race: “I was definitely struggling at the beginning but bit by bit I got more comfortable with the balance.
“I had a really good start so I want to acknowledge my team. We’ve had a tough year and for both cars to be on the podium is an amazing way to go into the break.

“The other guys have an edge but we are clearly closing the gap. Hopefully we can bring some more into the second half of the season and start fighting with them.”
A DRS issue during Saturday’s qualifying meant Hamilton could achieve no higher than P7 as a starting spot on the grid.
And Hamilton believed if the weather had taken a turn for the worse during the races dying moments he could have pipped the Red Bull driver on the line.
Mercedes team-mate George Russell, who got pole in qualifying, completed the podium trio and joined Hamilton in praising the team’s progress since a stuttering start to the season for them.

He said: “When it started spitting at the beginning and we were on the soft tyres I thought we were on.
“We had a strong start it was a good first stint, and then towards the end on the mediums I really struggled and loosing a bit of temperate.

Heading into the season break, Verstappen has collected eight race wins and lead’s Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc by 80 points.

Hamilton and his faltering Mercedes have paved the way for Leclerc to mount a serious challenge for the F1 title this campaign, which is a welcome change of pace for defending champion Verstappen.

“I’m thinking about what the steps are that I need to take to get this team winning again, what is the roadmap to winning another World Championship.

Difficulties with the Silver Arrows’ car complicated matters, but Russell has managed to be competitive and consistent this season.
The fifth-placed Brit even finds himself 16 points ahead of legendary compatriot and team-mate Hamilton in the F1 driver standings.
But he isn’t getting carried away just yet, and is eagerly learning from the 37-year-old in order to be the best that he can be.

“It’s by no means been a bad start to the season, but I would still like to raise my game a little bit.

A side effect of this has been a phenomenon known as porpoising, which has seen the cars suffer from extreme bouncing.
Mercedes, the team Russell and Lewis Hamilton drive for, have suffered particularly badly with this throughout the season with Hamilton complaining of a bad back in previous races.
Russell revealed what the porpoising felt like to BBC Sport: “It’s kind of like you’re on one of those space hoppers – that’s an extreme version.
“But it’s not cushioned. Then your visibility is becoming quite difficult because you’re shaking around up and down, down the straights.

On how he feels in the car, Hamilton said: “I still feel fresh and still feel like I’ve got plenty of fuel left in the tank.
“I’m enjoying what I’m doing. I’m really, really proud and enjoying arriving every day working with this incredible group of people.
“I’m also enjoying working with the sport more than ever. We’ve got some great people leading the sport and having great conversations about the direction we’re going as a sport, so I’m enjoying it more than ever in that space.
“Of course, I want to get back to winning ways and that’s going to take time, but I’m sure we’ll sit down at some stage and talk about the future.
