I’m Michael Schumacher’s pal – His wife banned me from visiting him but now I understand why she’s protecting him

MICHAEL Schumacher’s pal says his wife banned him from visiting the Formula 1 star – but now understands why she’s protecting him.Schumacher’s wife Corinna – dubbed Michael’s “guardian angel” – has overseen the effort to ensure his wish for privacy is respected as he continues to recover from his horrific ski crash ten years ago.

That has meant even close family friends, such as Eddie Jordan, who gave Schumacher his big break in F1 with Jordan Grand Prix back in 1991, has been prevented from seeing him.
Eddie has revealed in a heartfelt interview said the constant battle and pressure has left Corinna almost like a “prisoner” and he understood her situation amid the intense interest surrounding the stricken ace.
Speaking to The Sun Online via his involvement in betting firm OLGB, Eddie said: “Privacy is such a vital aspect to sport, business and your personal life.
“[Corinna] has set out some rules, I know her very well and a long time before Michael Schumacher.

“She’s a lovely girl and I knew her when she married Michael so there is a long history of good relations.”
Eddie continued: “I made an effort to go see Michael in the early days and Corinna refused, and rightfully so because too many people wanted to go see him.
“Jean Todt was given the privilege to go see him because of how close they were from their time together at Ferrari which is completely understandable.
“I was not able to go see Michael and they said ‘We love you Eddie and we’ve been involved with you for a very long time, but we do need privacy and safeguard of Michael’.”

Corinna is understood to have imposed a “family only” rule on visits with Michael.
And one of the only people outside their immediate circle who is allowed to visit him is F1 chief and ex-Ferrari boss Jean Todt.
Eddie added: “This was the most horrific situation for Mick and Corinna.
“It’s been nearly ten years now and Corinna has not been able to go to a party, to lunch or this or that, she’s like a prisoner because everyone would want to talk to her about Michael when she doesn’t need reminding of it every minute.”
Eddie managed the Jordan F1 team from 1991 to 2005 – with the bright yellow team known for fostering young talent, including Schumacher and his brother Ralf.
Schumacher was given his big chance by Eddie aged 22 at the Belgian Grand Prix in 1991.
It was an extraordinary set of circumstances in which Jordan driver Bertrand Gachot couldn’t make the race as he was jailed for 18 months after spraying a taxi driver with CS gas.
The team entered 250 races, won four Grand Prix, and mounted a world championship challenge in 1999.
Even after the selling the team – which eventually morphed into what now known as Aston Martin F1 – he remained involved in F1 as a regular fixture in the paddock and as a pundit in the media.
Jordan has often spoken of his “love” for his friend Michael – including earlier this year describing the 91-time winner as “there but not there”.
Corinna rarely speaks about Michael – but did reveal snippets in a touching, tearful interview for Netflix documentary Schumacher.
“I miss Michael every day. But it’s not just me who misses him,” she said.
“It’s the children, the family, his father, everyone around him.
“I mean, everybody misses Michael, but Michael is here. Different, but he’s here and that gives us strength, I find.”
She went on: “We try to carry on a family as Michael liked it and still does. And we are getting on with our lives.
“’Private is private’, as he always said. It is very important to me that he can continue to enjoy his private life as much as possible.
“Michael always protected us, and now we are protecting Michael.”
And Eddie told The Sun Online about how he has spoken to the legend’s son Mick.
MICHAEL’S ‘GUARDIAN ANGEL’CORINNA is at the centre of the tightly knit inner circle and slick PR operation that works to keep Michael’s life private.
She has reportedly slimmed down his £500m business empire and sold prized assets such as his private jet and house in Norway as the family retreated to their secluded home on the shore of Lake Geneva.
And there were reports last year that she was preparing to set up the family with a “new life” in Majorca.
Schumacher spoke of his love for his wife just days before his crash, telling German TV: “During all the time I was racing she was my guardian angel.”
And she has continued to watch over him ever since, reportedly being by his side from the moment he was rushed to hospital in Grenoble.
Corinna is said to have converted part of their £50million lakeside mansion in Gland into a state-of-the-art hospital, with a team of 15 medics providing 24-hour care at a cost of £115,000 a week.
Meanwhile the thick surrounding forest and security fences kept him away from any possible intrusion.
And its reported Corinna has been kitted out their £27million Majorca home with a mini hospital to help make the German racer comfortable.
he family even waged a legal battle in 2016 after German magazine Bunte reported the racing legend “could walk”.
The court case actually led to a few small pieces of information being revealed, with Schumacher’s lawyers confirming he still couldn’t walk two years on from the crash.
Corinna also reportedly led the effort to hide a ghoulish photo of the F1 legend that was reportedly snapped and then smuggled out by a “friend”.
It is alleged to have been offered to European news outlets for a staggering £1million.
German prosecutors in Offenburg later confirmed that “an unknown person” had taken “secret” snaps and were offering them for “high amounts of money”.
They called the disgusting act a “violation of his personal range of life” and breach of privacy.
Corinna reportedly demanded the cops take action, but the media outlet refused to reveal its source – and also claimed it never saw any of the images of Schumacher.
And in a rare interview with Germany’s She magazine in 2019, Corinna revealed it is her notoriously private husband who has dictated the news blackout.
She said: “He is in the best of hands right now and we are doing everything we can to help him.
“Try to understand that we follow Michael’s desire to keep his health a secret.”

Mick followed in his dad’s footsteps into F1 – but the young driver, 23, struggled and lost his race seat at the end of 2022 after a series of crashes for the Haas team.
Eddie told The Sun Online: “It’s also difficult for Mick, he is trying to make a career for himself in motor racing.
“If Mick did not have this pressure of his father looming over him, he would probably be a much better driver than what we think.
“However, it is his father and he has to understand and cope with that, but my thoughts are with him.
“I don’t reach out to Mick often, but I loved what he said about driving the Jordan car that his father had driven, it was a nostalgic and a very nice touch.
“Nevertheless, Mick needs his own free space and time like everyone in that family needs.”
She has reportedly slimmed down his £500m business empire and sold prized assets such as his private jet and house in Norway as the family retreated to their secluded home on the shore of Lake Geneva.
Mick – who was dropped by Haas in favour of veteran driver Nico Hulkenberg for 2023 – is now a reserve driver at Mercedes.
He will be backing up Sir Lewis Hamilton and George Russell, potentially stepping in for them if they have to miss a race.
In a touching link to his dad, Mercedes is the team that Michael ended his career with – having a brief three-season comeback from 2010 to 2012 after his initial retirement in 2006.
Schuey is credited with helping to lay the foundations of the Silver Arrows as they went on to dominate the sport – winning eight constructors’ and seven drivers’ titles – between 2014 and 2021.
Michael was left in a medically induced coma after his accident while skiing off piste on December 29, 2013 – spending three months in hospital before being released home.
He is reported to have suffered a traumatic injury to his brain – but little other info has been released on his health.
The lack of official updates has left room for speculation and conflicting reports from “insiders” about his slow progress.
Some have claimed he was in a vegetative state while others claimed he was awake and able to talk.
The F1 legend was a seven-time-world champion – winning five times for Ferrari and twice for Benetton – and is regarded as one of the greatest drivers of all time.

‘Makes things even worse’ – Lewis Hamilton’s ex team-mate speaks out on shock split with trainer Angela Cullen

NICO ROSBERG believes things could get “even worse” for Lewis Hamilton after the surprise split with his long-time performance coach Angela Cullen.Seven-time Formula One world champ Hamilton, 38, posted the shock news before last week’s Saudi Arabia Grand Prix where he paid tribute to the 48-year-old who has been by his side for the past seven years.

He split with performance coach Angela Cullen long last weekCredit: Alamy
Cullen, who is from New Zealand and was a professional hockey player before working for Hintsa Performance, set-up by the late Dr Aki Hintsa, worked with Hamilton at McLaren.
She worked with Hamilton over the race weekend and between races, looking after his meal preparations and arranging the logistics in getting to and from the circuit.
Her departure was unexpected and will cast questions about Hamilton’s future in the sport, especially after his latest disappointing fifth place finish on Sunday in Saudi.
He has finished fifth in both races this campaign to follow on from last season’s woes and his former Mercedes team-mate Rosberg believes no longer working with Cullen could make “things even worse” for the Brit.

The 2016 F1 champ told Sky Sports F1: “I think that probably makes things even worse because even though the split apparently was amicable, you know, Angela was a real friend I think also to him.
“And it’s with your trainer that [you spend] most of the time during a race weekend. You end up also going to dinner in a very small, tight group with maybe a family member and a trainer and that’s it – and for Lewis not to have her as well, I’m sure it’s going to be not ideal, not so nice.
“I think probably that’s another challenge and difficulty that he has to deal with and get used to.”
Following last week’s announcement, Cullen posted her response on Instagram, saying: “Exactly seven years ago on this day I was standing in the F1 paddock for the first time at the Australian GP. Today I’m excited to share that I’m off on my next adventure.

Why Lewis Hamilton could suffer huge F1 blow if Fernando Alonso is in the running for World Championship

LEWIS HAMILTON could suffer a major blow if Fernando Alonso stays in contention for the Formula 1 world championship. The Brit’s old rival and former McLaren team-mate has had a stunning start to the 2023 campaign after switching from Alpine to Aston Martin.

Alonso, 41, has earned two podiums in the opening pair of races this year – only being beaten by the Red Bulls.
Hamilton, meanwhile, has finished fifth in both Grands Prix – with Mercedes’ new car not having the pace to compete with Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez.
What will frustrate the seven-time world champion even more is that Aston Martin have seemingly built a quicker car with many of the same parts.
The Silverstone-based team has the same engine, gearbox and rear suspension as Mercedes.

While their car also uses the same wind tunnel.
Due to their affiliation with Aston Martin, Mercedes would rather them be the nearest challengers to Red Bull, if it can’t be them.
Spanish outlet The Objective even claim that the Silver Arrows could prioritise giving their customer team their highest performing power units – in what would be a huge blow to Hamilton and team-mate George Russell.

He has even been linked with a sensational move to Ferrari, with Merc boss Toto Wolff admitting he’d understand if Hamilton wanted to leave if the Silver Arrows couldn’t provide him with a winning car.
Hamilton has tried to quash the rumours, saying: “I’m not focused on that — I love this team and I’m so grateful for everyone that’s been on this journey with me.
“I don’t envisage being anywhere else, I don’t see myself quitting.
“I wouldn’t say it’s giving me a lot. Been there, done that, got the T-shirt. But I am trying to be patient and work with the team to get us to a good place. I must keep trying.”
When Russell was promoted to third-place following a time penalty for Alonso at the weekend’s Saudi Grand Prix, which was later overturned, Hamilton said: “George did great and is up there on the second row.
“But I don’t feel connected to this car and no matter what I do, no matter what I change, I can’t get confidence in it.” More

Lewis Hamilton claims Max Verstappen’s Red Bull car is fastest he has EVER seen in F1 career after Saudi GP annihilation

LEWIS HAMILTON claimed he had never “seen a car so fast” after Red Bull completed another annihilation.Sergio Perez took the chequered flag while Max Verstappen came from 15th on the grid to finish second, as this season is becoming a procession.

The Dutchman even pumped in a fastest lap at the death – on a knackered set of old tyres that was still a second quicker than the rest – to secure a bonus point.
It is incredible to think that Hamilton’s last victory in F1 came at this track back in 2021. Since then Verstappen has dominated in a remarkable change of fortunes.
But it was the manner in which he breezed past the Brit on lap 12 of this dreary race which astounded the seven-times world champion.
He said: “I’ve definitely never seen a car so fast.

“When we were fast, we weren’t that fast. I don’t know how or why but he came past me at such a serious speed, I did not bother to block because it was a massive speed difference.
“Of course, everyone wants to see everyone closer but that isn’t the way it is, but that’s not my fault.”
The result was a reversal of the outcome of the opening race in Bahrain – but Verstappen’s bonus point means he leads the championship from his team-mate.
But the reality is this was another no-contest with Fernando Alonso coming third despite a controversial post-race penalty.

The Spaniard was hit with a 10-second time penalty after his Aston Martin team failed to serve their earlier five-second penalty for an infringement on the grid where he was out of position.
As he came in to pit and serve his penalty, the Aston mechanics raised up the rear jack when the rules stipulate they cannot touch his car for a full five seconds.
It was an obvious slam dunk yet for some unfathomable reason, the FIA did not apply the penalty until after the race – much to Aston’s frustration – and F1’s embarrassment given Amin H. Nasser, president and CEO of Saudi oil firm, Aramco, had presented Alonso with his trophy on the podium.
The fall-out was spectacular but had an unexpected benefit for Russell, who was promoted into third place.
Alonso said: “Today is not good for the fans. When you have 35 laps to apply the penalty and you wait after the podium, there is something wrong in the system.”
In another incredible post-race twist, Alonso was later re-instated onto the podium after another FIA U-turn.
Hamilton cut a lonely figure before the race as there was no help from Angela Cullen, the bleached-haired assistant who had performed his pre-race preparations for the past seven years.
Instead of the New Zealander, the responsibility fell to a veteran garage hand known simply as Steveo, although he did not go the whole hog of holding back Hamilton’s braided hair while he put on his crash helmet.
Hamilton scooted down the pitlane, unaccompanied and wearing earphones, he made his way to the front of the grid for the national anthem.
And that was as close to the front he got, as this race turned into another Red Bull procession.
Despite qualifying down in 15th place to a drive shaft problem, the pre-race talk was still about whether Verstappen could challenge for a podium.
The consensus was unanimous – only not on for a top three finish but for the win.
By lap two, he had made up two places. By lap eight, he had made up three more as he started to power his way through the field.
Out in front Perez was keeping out of Alonso’s reach, with the Spaniard hampered by his initial penalty for being out of position on the grid.
Red Bull were cruising to another one-two finish, albeit for a little late drama when Verstappen told his team his car was making a high-pitched noise.
He need not have worried though, he was still going quicker than everyone else, so much so that Perez felt the need to get a hurry up at the fear of being gobbled up by his team-mate.
He did enough to come home in P1 while Verstappen completed the maximum points haul for the Milton Keynes-based team.

Meanwhile, Merc boss Toto Wolff has refused to rule out copying his rivals’ designs as they look to get back to winning ways, despite being second in the constructors’ championship.

George Russell was third while Lewis Hamilton was fifth as Mercedes again failed to challenge the two Red Bulls.
It is incredible to think that Hamilton’s last victory in F1 came at this track back in 2021, but since then Verstappen has dominated in a remarkable change of fortunes.

Hamilton meanwhile was given a warning by the stewards for weaving on the straight, with him radioing the team and saying “the grip sucks on this tyre”.
The Brit was then passed by Charles Leclerc and then Verstappen, as the Dutchman coasted by with such ease.
Such is his car advantage, and in fairness his skill behind the wheel, at the halfway stage of this otherwise dreary race he had moved into second place.

Meanwhile, there were signs world champion Max Verstappen will not get it all his own way this season.
After his comfortable Bahrain win, Russell predicted the Dutchman could win all 23 races.
Verstappen had looked untroubled all weekend and was comfortably ahead of the rest of the field in all three practice sessions.
His best times were almost a second up on the rest of the grid apart from his Red Bull team-mate Sergio Perez, who was still behind him but has now secured pole.
But he slowed in Q2 and complained he did not have much power.
As his team tried to resolve the driveshaft issue remotely he was eventually told to pit and they set about frantically working on his car.
But there was not enough time to fix it and Verstappen was dumped out of qualifying and will start 15th.
