Mercedes confirm member of Formula One team has tested positive for coronavirus ahead of Eifel Grand Prix

MERCEDES say a member of its Formula One team has tested positive for Covid-19 ahead of this weekend’s Eifel Grand Prix.
But the Brackley-base team are trying not to let it disrupt Lewis Hamilton’s bid to equal Michael Schumacher’s record of 91 victories.

    2

Mercedes have confirmed a case of coronavirus within the team ahead of this weekend’s race

SunSport understands that the team member is not well known to the public – and that would rule out key personnel such as Hamilton, Valtteri Bottas, and team boss Toto Wolff.
A spokesperson said: “We can confirm that a team member has tested positive.
“This has been handled and is being handled in line with FIA protocols, working closely with the FIA.
“We ask for your understanding that we won’t be offering additional details.”

F1’s rules include strict testing protocols during the pandemic with staff being tested every five days.
Anyone who does test positive is immediately placed into self isolation with those who have come into contact with them also isolated until tested.

Last week, F1 announced the highest number of positive tests in a week since the season resumed, with 10 personnel contracting the virus in the wake of the Russian Grand Prix.

However, F1 chiefs reckon that number will drop for the Eifel GP at the Nurburgring, given the tougher restrictions concerning social distancing and wearing masks.

Lewis Hamilton insists he ‘won’t give up’ after backlash for wearing ‘Arrest the cops who killed Breonna Taylor’ T-shirt

LEWIS HAMILTON “won’t let up” on his fight for racial equality after his display at the Tuscan Grand Prix.
The reigning champ donned a T-shirt on race day that read: “Arrest the cops who killed Breonna Taylor.”

Hamilton and Mercedes have pledged their commitment to raising awareness of racial injusticeCredit: Reuters

F1’s governing body, the FIA, will not punish Hamilton, 35, amid critics’ claims that it was a political message – which are banned from the sport.
But the six-time world champion says criticism won’t stop him fighting for justice however he sees fit.
Hamilton wrote online: “I want you to know that I won’t stop, I won’t let up, I won’t give up on using this platform to shed light on what I believe is right.
“This is a journey for all of us to come together and challenge the world on every level of injustice, not only racial.”

He added in a separate post: “It’s been 6 months since Breonna Taylor was murdered by policemen, in her own home.
“Still no justice has been served. We won’t stay silent.”

Sunday’s Tuscan GP, Hamilton’s sixth win of the 2020 season, coincided with the six-month anniversary of Taylor’s death.
Three police officers stormed her Kentucky apartment on a no-knock warrant as part of a narcotics investigation.

Taylor’s boyfriend Kenneth Walker fired his gun at the officers believing them to be intruders, before the officers retaliated by firing multiple rounds into the home – eight of which are believed to have hit Taylor.
On the night of her death, cops were looking for suspect Jamarcus Glover, who allegedly dated Breonna two years ago.
But the man was arrested in a separate raid ten miles away on the same night officers broke into her apartment.
A grand jury has been assembled to investigate the incident with two of the three officers retaining their jobs and another appealing his sacking.

Hamilton’s call for justice for Taylor, who was 26, is just the Mercedes superstar’s latest anti-racism display.
The Brit has helped encourage F1 to take racial issues more seriously and has taken a knee before races this season.
And while the FIA will not take action against Hamilton, they are said to be evaluating whether new guidelines are necessary to monitor future displays.
After the race, he stated: “It took me a long time to get that shirt and I’ve been wanting to wear that and bring awareness to the fact that there’s people that have been killed on the street and there’s someone that got killed in her own house.

The team stated: “We’re not bringing politics into F1, these are human rights issues that we are trying to highlight and raise awareness of. There’s a big difference.”

Gracie, 25, raced to riches on subscription site OnlyFans – raking in as much as £14,000 a week for explicit videos – after ditching the track.
And her new-found wealth meant she was able to pay for the brand new Merc in CASH.
She traded in her second-hand Mustang for a Mercedes Benz AMG GTC Roadster, costing around £196,000.
No stranger to fast cars, Gracie has reignited her need for speed with her new vehicle able to hit 206mph.

It is not the only thing she has treated herself to of late after showing off an £8,000 ‘Kim Kardashian’ bum lift.
But it has not been all rosy for the Queenslander, as she revealed she came close to quitting her lucrative porn career because of the ‘negative attention’ it brought.
However, it was her father who convinced her to continue after saying ‘you’re making so much money, don’t stop’.
And it certainly paid off as profits went through the roof during lockdown.

F1 chief Ross Brawn ready to introduce new REVERSE grid races to stop Lewis Hamilton’s dominance

FORMULA ONE chief Ross Brawn has opened the door to full reverse grid races after Sunday’s Italian Grand Prix epic.
Pierre Gasly took a shock maiden GP victory at Monza after a red-flag restart featuring an incredibly mixed-up grid.

    2

Lewis Hamilton bounced back from his stop-go nightmare to finish seventh at MonzaCredit: Getty Images – Getty
With Valtteri Bottas falling back early on and Lewis Hamilton handed a stop-go penalty for entering the pit lane while closed, the championship-storming Mercedes were nowhere to be seen.
Couple that with awful days for Red Bull and Ferrari, and fans were treated to a hugely unpredictable race.
F1 managing director Brawn was left inspired by the spectacular affair to press harder for reverse grid qualifying, which would increase the chances of a repeat.
Brawn wrote in his F1 column: “Monza was a candidate for a reverse-grid sprint race when we were considering testing the format this year.

“Unfortunately, we could not move forward with it, but the concept is still something we and the FIA want to work through in the coming months and discuss with the teams for next year.
“We believe that Sunday’s race showed the excitement a mixed-up pack can deliver and with next year’s cars remaining the same as this year our fans could be treated to the similar drama we saw this weekend at Monza.

“Of course, with a reverse grid sprint race, teams will set their cars up differently.

“Right now, Mercedes set their cars up to achieve the fastest lap and then to control the race from the front. If they know they have to overtake, they will have to change that approach.
“We will continue to evaluate new formats with the aim of improving the show but always maintaining the DNA of Formula One.”
McLaren’s Carlos Sainz and Lance Stroll of Racing Point completed Sunday’s podium, each finishing inside the top three for only the second time.
Kevin Magnussen’s breakdown outside the pit entry saw the lane shut moments before Hamilton boxxed, leading to his penalty.
The Brit was forced to serve his stop-go after Charles Leclerc’s crash drew a red flag, dropping him to the back of the pack.

Hamilton was far from dissuaded by the result in Italy, taking time out to praise race winner Gasly.
He said: “I think he’s done a fantastic job and deserves the success. Hopefully that creates an opportunity for him moving forwards.
“And he also beat the team that demoted him, so it’s definitely got to hurt for them.”

Lewis Hamilton shows off new £80k EQS fully electric Mercedes which goes 0-60mph in 4.5 secs and has holographic lights

    2

Lewis Hamilton posed next to his Mercedes EQS, which is due for release next year

The F1 champ says he is ‘working closely’ with Mercedes to move towards a more electric fleet
The EQS is not due for release until next year but is part of the two-car garage the Merc racer is sticking to off the track.
Pairing the £80,000 saloon with a Smart car, Hamilton, 35, says he has offset the carbon footprint of his ENTIRE F1 career.
Yet the EQS still packs a punch, going from 0-60mph in 4.5 seconds with 470bhp generated by a 350 kW electric motor.
Mercedes reckon a fully-charged EQS can even manage a range of 435 miles.

Naturally, it is also packed full of toys including holographic headlights, a rear ‘lightbelt’ of over 200 LEDs, and ambient dashboard lighting.
Posting a picture of himself beside the car, Hamilton wrote on Instagram: “Recently I’ve been making many changes in my life to reduce my impact on the environment.
“The first step in this journey was to understand my personal impact on the planet so I could make changes to improve it.
“Since then, I have offset my carbon footprint from my Formula 1 career dating back to 2007, I have reduced travel where possible, I have gone plant-based and outside of the track, I try to use electric cars wherever possible.

“I also want to use my position as a racing driver to enforce positive and permanent change, which is why I’m working closely with Mercedes to slowly move their fleet of cars towards electric.

“Small steps lead to big change, so it’s important we all take a moment to understand our footprint and the small changes we can make in our everyday lives to put our planet first.

Valtteri Bottas signs £12m one-year contract extension with Mercedes with Lewis Hamilton set for talks over new deal

VALTTERI BOTTAS has signed a one-year extension to his Mercedes deal – with the team set to switch their attention to Lewis Hamilton.
The Finn, who is currently second in the championship, will remain with the team until 2021.

The 30-year-old’s deal is worth around £12million a year as Merc decided against breaking up their winning partnership.
Bottas, 30, has eight wins and 48 podiums for the Silver Arrows and is incredibly low-maintenance in his relationship with Hamilton.
He said: “I’m very happy to stay with Mercedes in 2021 and build on the success we’ve enjoyed together already.
“The past few years have been all about continuous improvement, working on every aspect of my performance.

“I’m confident that today I’m the strongest I’ve ever been, but I can always raise the bar. Mercedes embraces the same philosophy: They always want to get better and are always hungry for more.
“Ever since I fell in love with F1 as a kid it’s been my dream to one day become world champion.
“I’m in the fight for the title this year and staying with Mercedes puts me in the best possible position to compete for it next season as well.”

Merc boss Toto Wolff is now expected to start talks with Hamilton as his deal expires at the end of this year.

Wolff added: “We are very excited that Valtteri will stay with the team for at least one more season.
“We’re seeing the strongest Valtteri we’ve ever seen this year — in terms of his on-track performance, but also physically and mentally.
“He is second in the championship, finished the last season in P2 and plays a very important part in our overall team performance.

Lewis Hamilton’s jaw-dropping British GP tyre blowout blamed on Mercedes and not debris on Silverstone track

FORMULA ONE teams have been told the dangerous blow-outs suffered at Silverstone were NOT caused by debris on the track.
Lewis Hamilton crossed the line with only three wheels after a last-lap puncture while Valtteri Bottas and Carlos Sainz also suffered front-left failures in the closing laps of the race.

    2

Tyre manufacturers Pirelli confirmed the punctures on Sunday were down to the teams leaving them on for too long and not debris on the trackCredit: EPA
Bottas and Sainz finished outside of the points while Hamilton said he was left feeling like his heart was going to stop.
The world champion said he believed debris had caused the tyres to all puncture but worryingly Pirelli say that was not the case.
The Italian company conducted an investigation and said it was the teams’ faults for leaving their drivers for too long on the old tyres, citing “the biggest forces ever seen on tyres generated by the fastest Formula One cars in history”.
A Pirelli statement said: “The key reason is down to a set of individual race circumstances that led to an extremely long use of the second set of tyres.

“The second safety car period prompted nearly all the teams to anticipate their planned pit stop and so carry out a particularly long final stint, around 40 laps, which is more than three-quarters the total race length on one of the most demanding tracks of the calendar.
“Combined with the notably-increased pace of the 2020 Formula One cars (pole position was 1.2 seconds faster compared to 2019) this made the final laps of the British Grand Prix especially tough, as a consequence of the biggest forces ever seen on tyres generated by the fastest Formula One cars in history.

That last lap almost had me 😅 We still got this 🏆🏁 I can’t express how grateful I am to all the fans, and to my incredible team. To think this is the 7th home win is just insane. Thanks for the positive energy everyone, we did this together. #BritishGP #TeamLH #StillWeRise @F1 pic.twitter.com/PyAPZ6SZrI

“The overall result was the most challenging operating conditions for tyres. These led to the front-left tyre (which is well-known for working hardest at Silverstone) being placed under maximum stress after a very high number of laps, with the resulting high wear meaning that it was less protected from the extreme forces in play.”
The findings will concern teams as Sainz, Bottas and Hamilton had no warning that the tyre would burst, while Daniil Kvyat also had a strange blow out.

Pirelli will stick with its original plan to go one step softer for this weekend’s 70th Anniversary GP at Silverstone, however they will insist on them inflated to a higher minimum pressures as a safety precaution.

Hamilton’s car is, at first, a picture of tranquility around the empty Silverstone while others fell away in the demanding race.
Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas and McLaren’s Carlos Sainz both experienced late punctures, prompting a message of calm coming over the Brit’s radio.
Engineer Pete ‘Bono’ Bonnington tells Hamilton: “Please don’t go for the fastest lap, we just need to get the car home. Tyre integrity is the predominant thing.”
The driver confirms the message before the news of Bottas’ nightmare, dropping the Finn from second to 11th, is relayed to him.

As Hamilton pulls around Luffield, his front-left bursts and he checks in: “Think something has happened to my left tyre also.”
From then on, the six-time world champ is fully concentrated as he masterfully guides the car home while Bono keeps him updated on Max Verstappen’s pursuit.

That is the most dramatic ending to a race I remember having.
    Lewis Hamilton

Having overtaken Bottas, the Red Bull ace pitted and found himself having to close a gap of over 30 seconds in just half a lap.
Crossing the line with just 5.8 seconds spare, Hamilton didn’t spot the chequered flag and quickly asked to confirm his victory.

A jubilant Bono replies: “That’s it mate, you’ve done it! You’ve done it!”
Such is Hamilton’s confidence in piloting the F1 three-wheeler, he decides against Bono’s calls to stop the car on track and gently rides back to the pits.
The victory bumped the Mercedes man’s lead at the top of the championship up to a healthy 30 points.
He said afterwards: “That is the most dramatic ending to a race I remember having.
