LEWIS HAMILTON has no chance of winning the British Grand Prix despite Mercedes making improvements to his car.That’s the opinion of Hamilton’s ex-Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg who reckons his former team’s performance is miles behind rivals Red Bull and Ferrari.

Mercedes have had a difficult start to the F1 season thus far.
Hamilton’s yet to win a race and languishes in sixth spot in the F1 rankings.
While his Mercedes compatriot George Russell fares slightly better in fourth.
However, the Mercedes duo have a mountain to climb if they’re to catch up with Red Bull pair Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez who occupy first and second place respectively, with Ferrari ace Charles Leclerc in third.

And Rosberg, 37, doubts Hamilton or Russell’s resurgence will begin at Silverstone on July 3.
He said to Sky Sports, via the Mirror ahead of the epic race: “No they can’t win, no way.
“They’re still too far away from performance of Ferrari and Red Bull. They’re still miles away.”
Rosberg’s fears were shared by Mercedes’ technical director Mike Elliot who revealed his team are lagging behind Red Bull and Ferrari going into the race.

He said: “We will be bringing new bits to Silverstone, we will be trying to push the car forward, trying to get some pace from the car we’ve got or from the package we’ve got as well as the new bits we are going to add to it.
“I think at the same time though we have to be honest with ourselves and say that at the moment we are just a little bit behind those front runners in Ferrari and Red Bull. And in a normal race I think it is going to be tough.
“I think Silverstone will be a circuit that suits us a little bit better, like Barcelona did, but maybe it will be just a little bit difficult. Whatever happens we will push as hard as we can.
“Our drivers will push as hard as we can because we want to get back to winning. We want to win for the team, we definitely want to win and we want to win for you, the fans, so let’s see what happens.”
But Hamilton hopes Mercedes can get back to winning ways at Silverstone despite Rosberg and Elliot’s concerns.
The 37-year-old said a few weeks ago: “I hope by the time we get to the British Grand Prix at Silverstone we will have the car as we want it – to be able to fight with Ferrari and Red Bull.
“It would be nice if we can give them a run for their money at our home race.” More

Mercedes are now also behind the two frontrunners when it comes to the ATR handicap system – which determines the amount of wind tunnel time each team is allocated.
This means they will be given 80 per cent of the total time, 10 per cent more than they had for the first nine races of the season.

Red Bull, Ferrari, Alfa Romeo and Haas have all seen their wind tunnel time reduced, but Williams have had an increase like Mercedes.
The slight shift in testing time means the reigning constructors champions can use this to improve their current car or even focus on developing next season’s model.

The next race on the 2022 calendar is the British Grand Prix – with the Silverstone weekend kicking off on July 1.
And Mercedes’ technical director Mike Elliott has confirmed the team will be bringing upgrades to the circuit.
He said: “We will be bringing new bits to Silverstone, we will be trying to push the car forward, trying to get some pace from the car we’ve got or from the package we’ve got as well as the new bits we are going to add to it.
“I think Silverstone will be a circuit that suits us a little bit better, like Barcelona did, but maybe it will be just a little bit difficult.
“Whatever happens we will push as hard as we can. Our drivers will push as hard as we can because we want to get back to winning.

“Just because of the fact that I couldn’t understand and take the fact that I couldn’t beat Lewis in those two years.
“I put so much pressure on myself. Towards the end of 2018, especially when I started to have the support role in the team, I really couldn’t take it, I really struggled. It was not fun.

“You lose the joy in things and I just completely lost the joy of F1 and racing in F1. I was almost angry at F1.
“It’s weird, but I just needed some time off, and think of the big picture and then I realised that ‘OK, it’s actually a pretty cool sport and I still have great opportunities ahead of me’. So I would be silly not to take them.
“I decided to go on a break in South America somewhere and just try not to think about F1 at all, and just try to find the will and the joy for the sport and the motivation.
“I found it, it was like a click. Probably [in] mid-January, I decided ‘OK, let’s do this. I can still do it’. So I managed to get myself together and I found the joy of driving again.”
In 2019, Bottas regained his mojo, finishing second overall behind Hamilton and winning four Grands Prix.
“Immediately, the results were much better than in 2018,” he said. “2019 was probably my best season so far, especially against Lewis.
“I won quite a few races, and especially until halfway through the season, I was sometimes even leading the championship, so it was a pretty, pretty strong year.
“But then just Lewis’ consistency and performances overall, for the whole season, I couldn’t match.”
Bottas finished second again in the 2020 season with two victories to his name.

“Lewis is in that group of the Ayrton Sennas and the Alain Prosts or even the Jackie Stewarts maybe.
“It’s a pity he wasn’t resigning at the top but I don’t think that’s gonna happen now.
“But nevertheless it’s wiser to stop than go through all the pain of not being able to do what you did before.
“He’s carried the sport very well. I would like to see him resigning now.”

He has now gone 10 consecutive races without recording a win – the longest run of his career.
There have only been three other occasions in which he has suffered this streak – in 2009 and twice in 2013.
