Lewis Hamilton told Max Verstappen’s F1 world title win should not be overturned even with Michael Masi being sacked

MAX VERSTAPPEN’S F1 world title win should NOT be overturned, insists Karun Chandhok. The FIA’s decision to axe Michael Masi as race director effectively admits that the Aussie made a costly error that cost Lewis Hamilton the title.

But analyst and former F1 driver Karun Chandhok believes that ‘too many variables’ were at play to justify handing Verstappen’s championship over to Hamilton.
He told Sky Sports: “I don’t believe the result should be overturned,.
“I think there are too many variables involved in that process just to clearly say ‘if the lapped cars had been left there, Lewis would have 100 per cent won’.
“I don’t think you can definitively say that. Even Mercedes would definitively not be able to say that. So I don’t think the result can be overturned.”
The issue stemmed from Masi’s call to allow Verstappen to unlap himself behind the safety car – leaving Hamilton a sitting duck on old tyres.
New FIA chief Mohammed Ben Sulayem has since announced structural changes that include a virtual race control room being deployed as part of a ‘new race management team’ that replaces Masi’s old role.

Speaking at today’s new car launch at Silverstone, Merc chief Wolff cut a relaxed figure as he had his say on the ‘more robust structure’ – which has been liked to VAR in football – that will now be in place.

Hamilton, 37, admitted that he’s ‘excited’ to drive his new motor after the ‘incredible hard work’ of the all team’s engineers.
On talk that he could have called it a day, he revealed: “I never, ever said that I was going to stop. I love doing what I do, and it is such a privilege working with this large group of people.
“You really feel like you’re part of a team and part of a family, working towards that common goal. There’s no feeling quite like it.
“But yeah… it was obviously a difficult time for me, and it was a time where I really needed to take a step back and focus on being present. I had my family all around me, and creating great moments.
“And I eventually got to a point where I decided I was going to be attacking coming into another season, and working with Toto and George [Russell].
“It’s exciting seeing George come in and bringing his energy. I can already feel that throughout the team. I think it’s going to be an exciting season.”

The new W13 features a return to silver, as well as a number of changes to the chassis and power unit.
On these adaptations, Merc technical director Mike Elliott revealed: “On the chassis side, the changes are huge.
“We haven’t had a change as big as this one in my career. I think there are three aspects to this: first, the way the regulations are constructed is very different, particularly for aerodynamics, and that has a big impact.
“Second, what they are trying to achieve with the aerodynamics means the cars are fundamentally a different shape.
“Third, this is the first time we will have attempted such a big change under a cost cap.”
I think it’s very encouraging to see that action has been takenToto Wolff on FIA changes
At the slick launch, team principal Toto Wolff also had his say on the FIA, amid the news that race director Michael Masi was relieved of his duties yesterday.
The Austrian, 50, said: “I think it’s very encouraging to see that action has been taken. There is a much-more robust structure now.
“The FIA has stated that there will be a virtual Race Control Room with state of the art technology.
“And the new guys are going to be in place for the Barcelona test and I think the right steps. It is a new era for the sport.”
Ahead of getting a look at his new car, new-boy Russell opened up on how he’s settling in with the Silver Arrows, admitting: “It’s easier because there are so many faces that I’ve known over the past six or seven years now.
“When we started working together, we’re straight into business.
Seeing Lewis work when I was a junior driver, it feels quite natural to go in there being team-mates with himGeorge Russell
“Obviously, the relationships are always built over time, but I only knew so many of the people and obviously having worked with Lewis…
“Seeing Lewis work when I was a junior driver, it feels quite natural to go in there being team-mates with him, racing alongside him.
“I think it’s going to be a really exciting season for all of us and for Formula One generally because there’s so much that has changed.
“There’s so much to learn. There’s gonna be so much development over the course of this season.
“We really need to be on top of our game as as drivers to help give the feedback to the team and working as one to to really push the car forward because I think from the first race to the last race of the season, they’ll probably be some drastic changes we see on the cars.”

F1 icon Lewis Hamilton has an incredible £13MILLION car collection, including £4m Shelby and £1.6m Pagani Zonda 760 LH

Hamilton’s wealth means he can afford life’s greatest luxuries and has a £13m car collectionCredit: Instagram @LewisHamilton
And boy does the racing legend know how to spend it – splashing his cash on the best cars that could earn him the title of ultimate celebrity petrol head.
The eco-warrior is level with Michael Schumacher on seven world titles and missed out on a record-breaking eighth in the heartbreaking Abu Dhabi 2021 finale.
But away from the track, Hamilton, 37, has an equally impressive fleet of cars worth around – wait for it – £13MILLION.
Of course, being a driver, he’s a car fanatic and collects everything from supercars to vintage classics that he divides between two garages – one in Monaco and another in LA.
He said previously: “I don’t know anything about wine. I don’t know a huge amount about art. But what I do know is cars, and I’m very particular about them.”
Amusingly, so they keep their value, when Hamilton doesn’t want to drive them back home – he reportedly has a tow-truck that comes to pick them up from whatever restaurant or club he’s at. Here we take a look at just some of his extravagant collection:

    PAGANI ZONDA 760 LH
The rarest motor in Hamilton’s possession is a £1.6m Pagani Zonda that was made entirely for him.
The exterior and interiors are purple, and at the request of the sports star he opted for a manual gearbox instead of the usual sequential one.
His reasons? Because he hated getting behind the wheel of it initially.
He once said: “The Zonda is terrible to drive!
    “It’s the best-sounding car I own, but handling-wise it’s the worst.”
That could be why in 2015 Hamilton got in an accident that caused some significant damage to the cherished motor.

    1966 SHELBY 427 COBRA
The highest valued car in Hamilton’s collection is this stunning classic.
Believed to be worth around £4m, it’s a rare sight – unless you’ve seen the racer cruising along the Pacific Coast Highway in LA.
Hamilton was often spied taking his ex-missus Nicole Scherzinger for a spin in this beauty, which would have him standing out from the crowd.

    LAFERRARI
Every car aficionado worth their weight in salt owns this £1m Ferrari – another collector’s item that rises in value as the years go by.
Capable of reaching a top speed of 217 mph, the LaFerrari can hit 0-62 mph in just 2.4 seconds, meaning it’s the fastest car Hamilton owns.
Footballers including Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Son Heung-min also drive this frighteningly fast motor that must be just like handling a racing car.

    MERCEDES-AMG PROJECT ONE
Lewis got his hands on a Project One last year, even though it is even supposed to be out until later in 2022.
He was heavily involved in the production of the plug-in hybrid sports car that’s capable of hitting a top speed of 217 mph.
Only 275 are going to be released at a cost of around £2m.
Make that 274 now, since Hamilton has one.

    MERCEDES-AMG SLS BLACK
He already owned a SL Black Series, so why not add the SLS, right?
Hamilton, who clearly has a need for speed, added this supercar to his garage probably because it’s the fastest Mercedes in production.
Powered by a 6.2-litre V8 engine that produces 622bhp – the SLS can reach a top speed of 196 mph.
It also hits 0-60 in just 3 seconds – making it the ideal car for Hamilton to get his thrills off the track with. For a price tag of £230k, it’s just what you’d expect really.

    MCLAREN P1
Despite splitting with McLaren’s racing team, Hamilton can’t have felt too aggrieved with his former employers because in 2015 he added a £2m P1 to his extensive list of rides.
The P1 has a 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8 petrol engine, which is twinned with an electric motor that means the supercar has a total power and torque output of 903 bhp and 980 Nm of torque.
In real talk that means it’s fast and powerful, can hit a top of 217 mph and 0-60 mph in under 2.7 seconds.

    1967 FORD MUSTANG SHELBY GT500
The second classic car that’s part of his fleet, fans of the Hollywood movie Gone In 60 Seconds might recognise this motor as looking to similar to one of the Eleanor models from the film.
Hamilton had his customised by Oklahoma shop Classic Recreations for additional cost.
At auctions, these can fetch up to £750k, and you can bet Hamilton’s is in tip-top condition. That said, we doubt he’ll ever sell it.
    BEST OF THE REST
When the Mercedes-Maybach 6 came out in 2016, Hamilton made sure he got his hands on the concept car.
The 2×2 coupe is completely electric, and can run up to 200 miles before it’ll need recharging.
Hamilton also has another Mercedes – the Maybach S600, which is a luxurious chauffeur’s car with a partition separating the front seats from the back.
Both those motors have a combined worth of around £800k.
And Hamilton doesn’t mind swapping four wheels for two – sometimes taking his £6,500 Honda CRF450RX Motocross Bike around the dirt tracks of California.
Then there’s also his Maverick X3 dune buggy that would’ve set him back around £20k, that’s also electric in theme with his eco-warrior status.

Following events in Abu Dhabi, amid calls for FIA race director Michael Masi to be relieved of his duties, Hamilton went quiet – taking a break from social media and life in the public eye.
But he got fans talking earlier this month by tweeting ‘I’ve been gone. Now I’m back!’ in a post retweeted over 80,000 times.
And as Mercedes gear up for their new car launch this Friday, they have provided fans with Hamilton content on social media.
One post features the perennial champion standing with his head bowed, ahead of a backdrop featuring a black and white Union Jack.
    It’s captioned: “Year 16. 🖤🤍”
This season is set to be Hamilton’s 16th in Formula 1, having started with McLaren in 2007.

Hamilton is chasing an eighth world title, which would take him ahead of current joint-record holder Michael Schumacher.
Mercedes have also posted content featuring the Brit’s new team-mate – compatriot George Russell.
The 24-year-old appears in a video undergoing a seat fit at Mercedes HQ.
But what really got fans’ attention was the appearance of Hamilton towards the end of the clip.
The Merc veteran fist bumps Russell and chats with his new pal.
All F1 teams are set to be in Barcelona next week as they test their new cars at an untelevised event.
More formal testing will then take place in Bahrain between March 10-12, with fans present and broadcasters able to show the action.
The new season will then get underway at the same location a week later.

Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes team-mate George Russell to ditch red helmet out of respect for F1 legend Michael Schumacher

NEW Mercedes driver George Russell will NOT wear a red helmet out of respect for F1 legend Michael Schumacher. The Brit, Lewis Hamilton’s new team-mate, will instead wear a black helmet for the upcoming 2022-23 season.

Russell’s decision to ditch red – a colour he has largely used in his career – is out of respect for legend Schumacher.
Russell said: “A red helmet in a Mercedes I thought was very Michael Schumacher, and I really wanted to respect that and go in a different direction.
“I’ve brought forward the black, I’ve got the red on the side with the Crowdstrike [sponsor], and bringing forward this blue detailing, which I really, really love and it’s probably something you’ll see a bit more of this year.
“I’ve obviously got my GR63 logo on the side, my number on the top, Mercedes star on the front.
“I think it looks really cool and really aggressive. I hope you like it and you’ll be seeing it soon in the W13 at Silverstone.”
Schumacher wore a red helmet between 2010-12 when he was racing for Mercedes.

Son Mick, 22, will be on the grid for this season racing for Haas.
He made his F1 debut last term and hopes to follow in his father’s footsteps.
Schumacher, 53, has largely been cared for at home since suffering a life-changing brain injury in a 2013 ski crash.
Few details of his condition have emerged since, although it’s understood the German has had stem cell treatment in an attempt to regenerate his nervous system. More
