MAX VERSTAPPEN says it is a “shame” that Formula One crowds are starting to behave “like football fans”. World champion Verstappen and big rival Lewis Hamilton have both been booed at races this season.

Red Bull’s Verstappen and Mercedes’ Hamilton and their respective teams regularly aim barbed comments at the other side.
Their heated rivalry came to a head when Verstappen pipped Hamilton to the title in the final race of last season in hugely controversial circumstances.

But Verstappen says it is not acceptable for their tribal followers to vent their spleens in the stands at race meets.
He told Sport1: “Basically, I think it’s a shame that the fans react like football fans, who always boo the opponent.
“In the Netherlands they whistle Lewis, in England they do it to me.
“I think it’s a shame because we often have extremely tough, sporting fights.”

A BRAZILIAN judge has ordered an investigation into disgraced Formula One legend Nelson Piquet as he faces charges of using racist and homophobic language against Sir Lewis Hamilton.According to Sky Sports, charges were brought by four human rights groups that want Piquet to pay 10million Brazilian reals (£1.6m) for allegedly causing moral damage to black and LGBTQ+ people.

The three-time world champion will have 15 days to prepare for the state case before he stands in front of judge Felipe Costa da Fonseca Gomes of the Distrito Federal court.

Hamilton said: “Honestly, I do feel like every now and then our qualifying pace looks like we could have been in the top three, and obviously with the crash that wasn’t possible.

But eventually the Brit ended up happy with the top three finish.
He added: “I mean especially after a difficult Friday with the crash which was not expected and I’m really so still sorry to the team of course, but just so proud of everyone for working so hard to rebuild the car.
“And also just proud of everyone back at the factory for continuing to work hard. I know, they’re going to have to know what they do with those bits that I destroyed. But hopefully we have some new better bits to come after that.
“So this is a great recovery for us as a team to get a third and the fourth is some really good points.

It comes after former F1 champion Nelson Piquet used racist and homophobic words in a recently aired interview towards Lewis Hamilton and has subsequently been banned by F1.
A statement from F1 said: “We have been made aware of reports that some fans have been subject to completely unacceptable comments by others at the event.
“We have raised this with the promoter and security and will be speaking to those who have reported these incidents and are taking this very seriously.
“This kind of behaviour is unacceptable and will not be tolerated and all fans should be treated with respect.”
Hamilton, who had criticised fans for cheering his crash during qualifying, was also quick to condemn the behaviour.
He said: “I arrived with a really positive mindset this morning and then I heard of some of the things that had been said.
“Just in a bit of shock and really sad, just to know that people arrive on the weekend to have a great time, to celebrate and to enjoy their time off and enjoy a great experience.
“If you go to the UK, we’ve got a wide range of fans that go there. Here you’ve got a lot of the Orange Army.
“But just to know that someone sitting in a crowd supporting someone else is receiving abuse… It’s crazy to think we are still experiencing these things in 2022.

Hamilton, 37, emerged from the smash physically unscathed, but was left angry at fans who cheered the end of his qualifying session.
The Brit said: “I didn’t hear they were cheering at the time of the crash. I was going through a bunch of stuff, but I heard it afterwards and I don’t agree with any of that, no matter what.
“A driver could have been in hospital, and you are going to cheer that? It is mind-blowing that people would do that, knowing how dangerous our sport is.”
The dangers of the sport have been massively highlighted in the last two race weekends after Alfa Romeo’s Zhou Guanyu had his car flipped upside down and crash into the track barriers at 160mph.
