GEORGE RUSSELL is relishing learning from team-mate Lewis Hamilton this season.The 24-year-old joined Mercedes at the start of this year expecting to immediately compete for wins.

Difficulties with the Silver Arrows’ car complicated matters, but Russell has managed to be competitive and consistent this season.
The fifth-placed Brit even finds himself 16 points ahead of legendary compatriot and team-mate Hamilton in the F1 driver standings.
But he isn’t getting carried away just yet, and is eagerly learning from the 37-year-old in order to be the best that he can be.

“It’s by no means been a bad start to the season, but I would still like to raise my game a little bit.
“If I’m performing against the very best in sport – and I want to be the very best – I need to be at the top of my game every single week.

While he remains ahead of Hamilton in the standings, recent improvements to the car have seen the seven-time champion find some form.
Sir Lewis has now finished ahead of Russell in four consecutive races going into this weekend’s Hungarian Grand Prix.
Rather than obsessing over Hamilton, however, Russell is trying to stay focused on his own performance.
He added: “The results are good on paper.
“But I think every individual, you know if you’re performing at the top of your game or if you feel like you’ve got more to improve.

“It’s been a good start to the season, but there are definitely areas that I need to improve, and I definitely can improve, and I have been improving throughout the season.
“So I guess that’s exciting for the future. But racing drivers aren’t patient. I want to be right on top of my game today.
“My approach is to try not to look at what the others are doing too much because I truly believe that you have to to get the most out of yourself. You can’t almost copy, paste what somebody else is doing.

FORMULA 1 star George Russell feels like he is driving a SPACE HOPPER due to the extreme bouncing his Mercedes suffers with.New regulations which came into play this year have seen the way the cars work with regards to aerodynamics completely change, with ‘ground-effects’ being utilised far more.

A side effect of this has been a phenomenon known as porpoising, which has seen the cars suffer from extreme bouncing.
Mercedes, the team Russell and Lewis Hamilton drive for, have suffered particularly badly with this throughout the season with Hamilton complaining of a bad back in previous races.
Russell revealed what the porpoising felt like to BBC Sport: “It’s kind of like you’re on one of those space hoppers – that’s an extreme version.
“But it’s not cushioned. Then your visibility is becoming quite difficult because you’re shaking around up and down, down the straights.

Russell, a director of the Grand Prix Drivers’ Association, has called on the FIA to tackle the matter, revealing the majority of drivers on the grid are in favour of a change to lessen the long-term health impact.
The FIA have said they will be taking action to reduce or eliminate the bouncing, a ruling which has left Ferrari and Red Bull devastated after they managed to crack the code in the new designs with fast cars and less bouncing.

On how he feels in the car, Hamilton said: “I still feel fresh and still feel like I’ve got plenty of fuel left in the tank.
“I’m enjoying what I’m doing. I’m really, really proud and enjoying arriving every day working with this incredible group of people.
“I’m also enjoying working with the sport more than ever. We’ve got some great people leading the sport and having great conversations about the direction we’re going as a sport, so I’m enjoying it more than ever in that space.
“Of course, I want to get back to winning ways and that’s going to take time, but I’m sure we’ll sit down at some stage and talk about the future.

But Hamilton also wants to continue to enact change off the track as well.
His Ignite charity is perhaps his most prominent off-track initiative, with Hamilton and Mercedes working together to try and get all 10 F1 teams to sign up to a charter put together by the Hamilton Commission.
So clearly there are still things for Hamilton to accomplish both in and out of the race car – and that may well mean he is around for a number of years to come. More

However, the pair finished second and third respectively at the Circuit Paul Ricard on Sunday in their best result of the year.
And Hamilton is clearly a lot happier with how things are going thanks to the work done by the engineers back at the factory and on race days.

“I am not sure why that gap has got bigger over these two races. They [Leclerc and Verstappen] are in their own league in that respect performance wise.

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff, who shoulders the responsibility for his team’s poor start to the season as their car design has thrown up problem after problem.
Too slow, too much bouncing at high speed… In fact the only thing they have got right is the reliability.
Wolff’s team is playing a gamble of trying to fettle their car in an attempt to unlock its potential.
He said: “We knew that once we got the new tyres on and we were driving the car in anger, that we would be there in a third and fourth, like we have been all season.
“But it’s just not good enough. You can see that when you are on the back foot, your expectations are on a certain level for the race weekend and it doesn’t come together, a kind of free-styling starts.
“It was mainly experimenting with rear wing levels and also tyre temperatures. But in the end the overall package is just not quick enough.
“Lewis did an immense job. He’s probably extracted more than the car has at the moment.”

Leclerc, who started his racing career less than an hour away from this circuit in the south of France, was cheered by the crowd as he took the 16th pole of his career and the seventh of the season.
He did it with a huge helping hand from his Ferrari team-mate Carlos Sainz, who provided a textbook tow to punch a hole in the air and catapult Leclerc into an excellent finish to his second flying lap.
Sainz, who was already starting at the back of the grid due to engine penalties following his fire in Austria, was sacrificed for Leclerc’s benefit as he played the perfect wingman.
Leclerc said: “It was a great lap. I’ve struggled all weekend to put a lap together and I managed it, but I have to say that I also had the help of Carlos, and that was amazing teamwork.
“Without Carlos it would have been much closer. I hope that he can join us back in the fight for the win tomorrow.”
Meanwhile, Verstappen, who starts in second on the grid, added: “With the conditions it is very difficult to know what is happening.
