I visited Lewis Hamilton’s vegan burger chain and tried the plant-based patties – they take pole position over McDonalds

VEGAN substitutes for fast-food favourites have become a booming market over the last decade.Millions of hungry health and animal-conscious people around the globe have made the decision to do away with meat and eat ethically-sourced replacements.

As such, the market for vegan fast food alternatives has exploded over the last few years.
Several celebrities and athletes have embraced the plant-based lifestyle, including Formula One icon Lewis Hamilton – who stopped eating meat in 2017.
And the Stevenage speedster drove headfirst into the market at breakneck speed four years ago with a major investment in a meat-free burger chain – Neat Burger.
Hamilton – along with Hollywood superstar Leonardo DiCaprio – invested a huge amount of capital in the London-based chain to “make plant-based eating more accessible to everyone.”

And it’s now valued at a whopping £80MILLION following investment from former Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.
Neat Burger’s alternatives to your regular burgers have received rave reviews.
So much so, that I – perhaps the biggest meat-lover on the planet – thought I’d see what all the hype was about.
So I popped along to the chain’s Canary Wharf branch on my lunch break to broaden my horizons and my pallet.

I was immediately impressed by the look of the restaurant, which had a colour scheme straight out of Miami Vice.
In keeping with the new age of fast food restuarant, Neat Burger has done away with traditional waiters in favour of electronic self-service menus.

And it was there I was able to select what looked to be the closest thing to a double cheeseburger – my go-to when I want to indulge in a burger.
That came in the form of the ‘Smash Daddy’ burger, which is comprised of two ‘Neat’ patties, onions and is covered with melted cheese.
The burger – which I upgraded to a meal deal for a reasonably priced £11.99 – was topped off with a generous slathering of Neat, mustard and stack sauce.
The brightly-coloured dine-in area served as the perfect distraction from the questions swirling through my head as I patiently waited for the arrival of my first-ever order of vegan food
Why am I trying this? What I ordered looks like a burger, but will it taste like one?
And, most importantly, will it live up to the hype?
It didn’t take long – less than ten minutes in fact – for my questions to be answered.
The presentation of the burger and chips were better than that of most fast-food chains.
And much to my surprise, the taste was exactly the same – if not better than most traditional burgers.

As a once regular frequenter of McDonald’s to cure my hangovers of yesteryear, I know a thing or two about fast-food burgers.
So I’m very well placed to say it blows Maccies’ iconic and beloved cheeseburger out of the water – and then some.
A tidal wave of flavours hit me seconds after my gnashers cut through the delectable brioche bun and pierced the soft and tender patty.
To get a true taste for the patty – the combination of mung beans, quinoa, and chickpeas – I broke off and nibbled on a small sauce-less morsel.
That small and soft bite accentuated the wave of flavours and amazing texture I experienced just a few moments earlier.
I went into my maiden indulgence of vegan food adamant that no plant-based alternative could ever replicate the taste of a ‘real’ burger or convince me to consume less meat.
But I’ll happily admit that I’ll no longer pigheadedly – pardon the pun – close myself off to vegan alternatives.

My only complaint, however, was the amount of salt on the skinny fries which accompanied the delicious burger – although that’s easily rectifiable.
For those of you who have dedicated yourself to the vegan lifestyle, or if you’re a burger aficionado who wants to switch things up, I can safely say the Hamilton-backed burger joints are the ideal pit stop for some quick grub. More

The online ad echoes the telly original, with the determined lass using her job at McDonald’s to trick the Match of the Day pundit, 52, into posing for a photograph.
Viewers also hear Shearer’s daughter Chloe, who is now in her 30s but was just five in the original ad, reprise her role of begging her dad to get a McDonald’s.
Shearer said: “Times have changed since I shot the first advert.

I don’t get many people asking me for signatures any more — now they’re all after selfies.”
“Steve said meeting the football star again after 25 years was “pretty emotional”.
He added: “As soon as Alan walked through the door, he waved and acknowledged me.”
The actor showed his hero a cheque he’d signed — part of a ruse to get his autograph in the original ad — which the married dad-of-two had kept as a souvenir.

‘Shy’ Chelsea transfer target Neymar tipped to succeed in new sport and bring along huge fanbase

NEYMAR has been tipped for a successful career after football once he hangs up his boots. The PSG star, who has been linked with a move to Chelsea in recent weeks, came under fire last week over his off-pitch activities.
Injured Neymar faced criticism last week over a trip to McDonald’sCredit: Rex
The 31-year-old was spotted at a poker tournament and later at a McDonald’s only hours after PSG’s first-leg Champions League home defeat to Bayern Munich.
But poker pros believe he might well have a future in the card game after he left them impressed with his ability.
Players at the European Poker Tour spoke to RMC Sport about Neymar – who eventually finished 49th in that tournament – potentially making the switch.
Poker professional Julien Sitbon expressed his excitement for the idea.
    READ MORE ON CHELSEA
He said: “We’re talking about Neymar what! The notoriety he has…
“Every time he is on a trip, there are bodyguards and people who are there to watch out for him.
“He’s someone who plays a lot of hands, so I would describe him as rather aggressive. Afterwards, I didn’t play him enough to know if he was aggressive or passive, but he plays a lot of hands.
“But I think he is focused because he is a competitor. In everything he does he wants to be good. He likes poker, sure, so I think he’s trying to be focused to perform as well as possible.”

Fellow competitor Thomas Eychenne said he thinks Neymar’s football experience can help, but surprisingly branded the Brazilian “shy” and “introverted”.
He said: “He has the potential. He has the mind of a competitor because he played at the highest level in football.
“I found him rather introverted. He is not someone who will talk a lot and be very open. But I can understand it, he is extremely in demand.
“I will say that he is someone who is shy in his appearance. In the sense that he tries not to be seen too much.”
Kylian Mbappe appeared to criticise his teammate as he told journalists that PSG stars had to “eat and sleep well” following the McDonald’s pictures.
But he denied that the jibe was aimed at Neymar.
Chelsea are one of a number of clubs linked to the ex-Barcelona forward, who is now in his seventh year in Paris. More

I won the Euros despite scoffing McDonald’s, guzzling beers and partying just days before the final

IT was the footballing miracle fuelled by the unlikeliest preparation of burgers, booze and an all-night party. The against-all-odds triumph which actually cost one of its major players not one but TWO holidays.

Yet a victory no one could have put a penny on less than a month earlier . . . because the eventual winners were not meant to be in the competition.
Denmark had only been called into Euro 92 when Yugoslavia were booted out — over the war in the Balkans — ten days before the tournament began.
Amazingly, a month later they were champions, after their injury-ravaged and depleted side shocked the biggest names in Europe at the Sweden event.
They stunned even themselves — and today the heroes of Denmark’s finest hour will hold an almighty party in Copenhagen to celebrate the 30th anniversary.

He revealed: “I had a holiday booked in the Greek islands with friends, so that got cancelled when we were called in.
“But I thought we’d just have our three games against England, Sweden and France and then we’d be back on holiday — so I booked one in Majorca after the group stage.
“Obviously that went the same way as the first and eventually I didn’t get away at all as I had to go on a pre-season training camp with Pisa.
“So winning the Euros cost me two holidays and a summer break of any kind. But of course it was worth it.”

With only one point after two group games — a 0-0 opening draw with Graham Taylor’s Three Lions — the Danes had to beat a French side boasting Eric Cantona, Laurent Blanc and Jean-Pierre Papin to progress.
    Amazingly, they did.
Larsen said: “They had qualified with maximum points and were looking at us thinking, ‘We’re playing a holiday team here, they can’t harm us’. They were so sure they’d win.
“I had only scored once in 18 games for Denmark but got an early goal.
“We were pressing, winning all the second balls and headers — and beat them 2-1.”
It earned a semi-final with holders Holland, who were fancied even more than France.
And there was more complacency followed by another jaw-dropping shock, this time on penalties with Denmark running on empty.
Larsen — who hit both Danish goals in a 2-2 draw — said: “Like France, they thought all they had to do was run around and they’d win.
“We scored early, which woke them up a bit and then went in front again.
“But they equalised with four minutes left and we were really struggling.
“We played extra-time with two injured players and were just fighting to get to penalties.
Peter Schmeichel celebrates beating Germany in the Euro 92 finalCredit: Getty
“But once we did, we had the best keeper in the world, Peter Schmeichel, and that made a massive difference.
“I was struggling with my groin so told coach Richard Moller Nielsen I’d take first, as I didn’t want it to get cold.
“I was only nervous afterwards, thinking what could have happened if I’d missed — and it was honestly just like taking one in a normal game.
“Anyway, Peter saved Marco van Basten’s penalty and we were through — and partied until 6am to celebrate!
“There were lots of beers, a few McDonald’s and it wasn’t the best preparation because the final was only four days later, on Friday, June 26.”
So it was on to face mighty Germany and, for 20 minutes, it looked a case of ‘How many?’ as the 1990 World Cup winners were in total control.
    And then it all changed.

Larsen said: “At first they were running round us like we were cones. It was so easy it was like a warm-up for them.
“But suddenly John Jensen, who never scored, put us in front and all our energy came back. We were a new team, winning tackles and second balls, fighting for everything.
“I remember some of the Germans telling us how they felt every tackle off us. One told me, ‘You were like lions — no one could stop you’.
“We had hardly any preparation, played like it was street soccer and got a second goal from Kim Vilfort.
“But no one could say we didn’t deserve it. We beat the world champions, the European champions and a great French team. We had a great spirit and enjoyed being together.
“On the night of the final we had a big party in the hotel, two hours’ sleep and then flew back to Copenhagen, where we had another party.
“Sunday, it was my brother Christian’s bachelor party and we went to the horse racing.

Kevin and Michele welcomed their third child Suri in September 2020, although the youngest of the De Bruyne clan isn’t old enough to attend games yet.
The rest of the family witnessed an incredible match yesterday, as City drew 2-2 with Liverpool at the Etihad.
Diogo Jota cancelled out De Bruyne’s early opener, before Gabriel Jesus reclaimed the home side’s lead in the 37th minute.
Within a minute of the second-half Liverpool were level, when Sadio Mane converted Mo Salah’s pass.
Raheem Sterling thought he’d won it, only to be denied by the offside flag.
The result keeps De Bruyne and Co one point clear of the Reds at the top of the table, with seven games left to play.

Lawrence Okolie plans to own a McDonald’s restaurant after being inspired to box while working tills at fast food chain

BOXING champion Lawrence Okolie plans to go from working the tills at McDonald’s to owning his own restaurant.Okolie was 17 when he was inspired into boxing while watching Anthony Joshua win gold at the London Olympics all while on shift at the fast food chain.
Lawrence Okolie with his WBO belt outside McDonald’s in London Victoria
The boxer wants to go from working the tills at McDonald’s to owning his own store
Now, he is managed and mentored by AJ and has a WBO world title to his name – but wants to go back to where his journey all started, as the boss.
Okolie has partnered with his former employers McDonald’s, who have launched a new Plan for Change campaign.
And he dreams of capping off a remarkable return to the multi-billion dollar company by becoming a franchise owner, all while continuing his boxing career.
Okolie, 28, told SunSport: “It’s a very, very serious ambition of mine.
“For me, it’s full circle. At the start, McDonald’s gave me an opportunity, gave me a job, which was my first legitimate income coming in.
“It was the same with my younger brother, at the time that was massive for our family as money was coming in.

“It wasn’t like we were in absolute poverty, but our little bit helped, my mum didn’t need to stress as much, to get us other little bits and bobs, we could afford those.
“To be able to now go back into the company in an ownership way, it shows progression.
“I went from working the tills to owning a whole McDonald’s, I can only see positives really.”
McDonald’s new campaign will see youth workers and services connected to every restaurant in every community by 2024, offer 3,000 apprenticeships by 2025 plus help one million people gain new skills and open doors to jobs by 2030.
Okolie visited the London Victoria store where he once flipped burgers and salted chips before dusting off his old apron.
And it was there he interacted with staff members to share his story and remember where he came from.

Okolie said: “There’s a lot of time we see people go on and achieve good to great things and then they’re not around anymore.
“They’re not reachable, they’re distant but when you’re there to talk to and say, ‘What did you do? How did you do it?’
“It makes you more of a reference for them.”
Okolie is a proud vegan athlete but is still able to enjoy some classic McDonald’s fries as part of his plant-based diet when out of training camp.
    ‘CHEEKY LITTLE MACCIES’
He joked: “I’m on a meal prep when I’m training but when that’s finished, I’ll go and have a cheeky little Maccies, you can’t say no, can you?
“There’s a vegetarian burger coming out soon, so I can’t wait to try that one.”
Okolie won his world title with a sixth-round knockout of Poland’s Krzysztof Glowacki, 35, in March.
He then defended it for the first time last month against challenger Dilan Prasovic, 26, who was taken out in three rounds.
Now Okolie, a 2016 Olympian with a current unbeaten record of 17-0 with 14 knockouts, has unification bouts in his sights.

World Champion Boxer Lawrence Okolie has teamed up with McDonald’s to launch a new campaign designed to improve the life chances of thousands of young people. To find out more, visit mcdonalds.co.uk/planforchange
