Man Utd’s David de Gea vs Dean Henderson battle has ‘problem written all over it’, claims Gary Neville

MANCHESTER UNITED legend Gary Neville believes there’s trouble brewing at Old Trafford over the No1 keeper spot.
Dean Henderson has returned to the club following a successful loan spell with Sheffield United.

And he faces a battle on his hands to dislodge first choice David de Gea in the first team.
But while Neville believes Henderson won’t come in and be first choice straight away, should De Gea endure another season of blunders he may as well kiss goodbye to his United career.
Neville told Sky Sports’ ‘FNF: Season Preview’: “The idea that Dean Henderson would come into Manchester United and replace David de Gea as No 1 goalkeeper straight away… it won’t happen, I can guarantee it won’t happen.
“This has got ‘problem’ written all over it. The one area of the pitch where you need consistency and stability is your goalkeeper, you need to know who your No1 is, you cannot be flip-flopping.

“It just does not work; I’ve never seen it work at any club or at international level.
“Where there is a decision to be made about two goalkeepers you have to pick your No1, go with him and stick with him, even if there is a mistake.
“Once you take David de Gea out of the team and put Henderson in, you may as well forget about De Gea. That’s coming from my experiences at United.

“The period between Peter Schmeichel and Edwin van der Sar we had Ricardo, Fabien Barthez, Mark Bosnich, Roy Carroll, Tim Howard, Massimo Taibi, many goalkeepers over a five- to six-year period and there was an inconsistency that certainly didn’t help.”

De Gea had an error-strewn season last campaign, while Henderson earned all the plaudits with the Blades.
The 23-year-old has been with United since 2013, but has spent most of his career on loan, including at Stockport, Grimsby and Shrewsbury.

Real Madrid ‘ready to accept cut-price £22m for Gareth Bale’ putting Man Utd and Tottenham on transfer alert

REAL MADRID are ready to let Gareth Bale leave for £22million, Spanish reports say.
The 31-year-old has grown increasingly frustrated in the Spanish capital, managing only 14 starts last season.

    1

Real Madrid are reportedly ready to let Gareth Bale leave for £22m
But according to Mundo Deportivo, manager Zinedine Zidane and the Bernabeu board are willing to let the Welshman leave.
And they will lower their asking price to £22m, having refused to pay off the remaining two years of his contract worth £30.2m.
Manchester United and Tottenham have both been linked with the forward in the past.
But Bale’s £600,000 a week wages have proved a stumbling block previously.

It is now understood the former Spurs winger is open to taking a pay cut if it means ending his Madrid misery.
United are in the market for a wideman, having so far failed to meet Borussia Dortmund’s £109m asking price for 20-year-old Jadon Sancho.
Bale was close to sealing a move to China last summer, until Madrid blocked the transfer at the last minute.

But they are now happy for the him to leave as they attempt to offset their wage bill and recoup transfer funds.

It comes after James Rodriquez, 29, was sold to Everton for £20m.
Zidane is said to be meeting Bale this week to discuss his future at the club.
The unwanted player already revealed Madrid have made it hard for him to leave in the past.
Bale told Sky Sports: “There have been other instances where we have tried to go but the club won’t allow it or they have done something.
“What can I say? I want to play football. I am still motivated to play football so I guess it is on the club really.
“I can’t do anything, they are in control of everything
“I have a contract so all I can do is carry on what I am doing an hopefully something comes up.
“It is in the club’s hands and they have made things very difficult to be honest.”

Man Utd star Marcus Rashford wins PFA Merit Award for amazing efforts in fight against child poverty

MARCUS RASHFORD has been awarded the PFA Merit Award in recognition for his work tackling child poverty in the UK.
The award is presented to an individual who has given great service to football over a long period of time and Rashford’s charitable contributions have been acknowledged.

The Manchester United star successfully campaigned for the government’s free school meals programme to be extended into the summer holidays.
Rashford teamed up with poverty and food waste charity FareShare and garnered plenty of support amid the coronavirus pandemic, with children unable to collect free meals while schools remained closed.
His efforts ultimately resulted in the government providing children with a six-week meal voucher.
The 22-year-old continues to battle leading MPs on the issue, having successfully reversed the Department for Education’s original stance on the subject.

After receiving the award, Rashford said: “It’s a huge honour and I hope it encourages and promotes other players to do things to help.
“It’s been a long journey but I think the first phase was probably the hardest part, which was learning and self-teaching, who were the right people to get in contact with to help these children,

“We had the idea but we didn’t know how to pitch them or who to pitch them to. That was probably the most difficult phase.
“What we’ve done so far is only the short term, me and my team are trying to find plans on how we can help these children for the rest of their childhood.

“Long-term, we want to find answers to the problem. At the moment, we don’t have those answers but we will do our best to try and find them.”

Mason Greenwood offers grovelling apology after England Covid shame as Man Utd star says he let Gareth Southgate down

MASON GREENWOOD offered a grovelling apology after his Covid-19 hotel shame and admitted he let Gareth Southgate down.
Greenwood, 18, and Phil Foden, 20, were thrown out of England’s squad for meeting girls at a hotel after Saturday’s 1-0 win in Reykjavik.

Greenwood and Phil Foden were thrown out of England’s squad for meeting girls at a hotel
Before boarding a private plane flying them back to Manchester, the duo were hit with a £1,360 fine by Icelandic authorities for the coronavirus breach.
Foden first issued an apology and now Greenwood has followed by promising it was a “lesson I will learn from”.
He said: “Having now had the chance to reflect on what’s happened, I can only apologise to everyone for the embarrassment I have caused.
“It was irresponsible of me to break the COVID-19 protocols which are in place to protect players, staff and the public.

“In particular, I want to apologise to Gareth Southgate, for letting him down, when he had shown great trust in me.
“Playing for England was one of the proudest moments in my life and I only have myself to blame for this huge mistake.
“I promise my family, the fans, Manchester United and England that this is a lesson I will learn from.”
Both players had made their international debuts in the Nations League win  – Foden started the game and Greenwood came off the bench – but will miss tonight’s clash with Denmark and possibly another three games as punishment.

    WHAT WE KNOW SO FAR

Their clubs did not hold back when condemning their actions in brutal statements.
A comment from United said: “Manchester United are liaising with the Football Association and are disappointed with the actions of Mason Greenwood over this situation.”
City followed up: “It is clear that Phil’s actions were totally inappropriate.
“His behaviour not only directly contravenes strict guidelines related to Covid-19, but also falls well below the standard expected of a Manchester City player and England international.”
Reports from Iceland, including from newspaper DV, suggested the two girls posted photographs of the players on Snapchat.
The squad were exempt from Iceland’s quarantine procedures but still had strict rules to follow and were not allowed to meet any person outside the bubble.
Foden and Greenwood met Icelandic model Nadia Sif Lindal Gunnarsdottir, 20, and her 19-year-old cousin Lara Clausen.
Nadia revealed she had been chatting to Manchester United forward Greenwood before England travelled to Reykjavik.
A video later surfaced showing the girls on the phone to the footballers as they planned their route into the hotel.

Nadia’s 19-year-old cousin Lara Clausen was also at the hotel
But Nadia denied being responsible for any footage being leaked and claimed it was not her on the video having the conservation.
She wrote on Instagram: “I wanted to come clean a bit about this whole thing. I did not leak anything to the media. I did not take those photos and those videos.
“I was not talking to him on the phone, that was another girl. I did not know that they were quarantined.
“They did not deserve this one bit, they are amazing lads and really good footballers. I did not mean for any of this to happen. I’ll say it again, I did not leak ANYTHING to the media and NEVER would.
“Also I was wearing jeans that night, not leggings. Yeah I posted that for one hour, a story with my closest friends, but someone took a screenshot.
“Yes I did mess up too. Never said I didn’t. But I will defend myself from stories that aren’t true.”

Five biggest transfers to be done before season including Partey to Arsenal, Sancho to Man Utd and Thiago to Liverpool

THE start of the Premier League is just days away – but there’s still time for plenty of transfer business to be done.
Chelsea have dominated the market so far, splashing out close to £200million on Timo Werner, Malang Sarr, Ben Chilwell, Thiago Silva and Kai Havertz.

Their big rivals have struggled to keep up, with Manchester United finally getting the chequebook out last week to land Donny van de Beek from Ajax – in what Paul Merson described as a ‘panic buy’.
So with less than a week to go before the first whistle blows, which major deals are still on the table and who could be making a late entrance ahead of Saturday’s big kick-off?

THOMAS PARTEY: ATLETICO MADRID TO ARSENAL
THE £45m-rated Ghanaian midfielder has been chased by Mikel Arteta for months as he looks to add steel to his side.

Dani Ceballos has extended his loan deal but the capture of Partey, 27, who scored four times in 46 games last season, would be a huge coup.
He has reportedly rejected a new deal and wants to move to the Premier League – despite interest from PSG.
But Arteta must raise some funds first after failing with a swap offer involving Matteo Guendouzi and Alexandre Lacazette.

    THIAGO ALCANTARA: BAYERN TO LIVERPOOL
JURGEN Klopp appeared to be winning a one-horse race for the Spaniard as last season drew to a close.

The 29-year-old midfielder has a year left on his deal at the Allianz Arena and the European champions were happy for him to pursue a new challenge elsewhere and avoid losing him on a free next year.
But Manchester United are now said to be making a late charge and it’s not hard to see why, with the former Barca star available for around £27m.
Thiago is giving nothing away though, telling reporters at the weekend that ‘I neither care nor am I interested’ in transfer speculation.
Let’s see what he’s saying next weekend.

JADON SANCHO – DORTMUND TO MAN UNITED
THE saga of the summer isn’t over yet – and could well drag on through the autumn.
This ‘summer transfer window’ doesn’t end until October 5, which gives United plenty of time to find the £350,000 a week that Sancho reportedly wants – and the £110m Dortmund are demanding.
Donny van de Beek’s arrival suggested Ole Gunnar Solskjaer may have moved on from his No1 target – who United have chased in preference to Chelsea new boy Kai Havertz.
But if Ole still wants him, he’d better get his finger out or risk losing him to Liverpool, Jamie Carragher warns.

KALIDOU KOULIBALY: NAPOLI TO MAN CITY
PEP appeared to be in pole position to land the 29-year-old centre back and tabled a £53million bid weeks ago.
Koulibaly’s agent Fali Ramadani is even said to have flown to Manchester and spent two days listening to the finer points of City’s offer.
But Napoli supremo Aurelio De Laurentiis will accept nothing less than £63million for the highly-rated centre-back.
And with PSG also said to be in the frame, City need to splash the cash quickly if they are to land the Senegal star, who is also a long-term target of neighbours United.
Neither Manchester clubs plays this weekend but they will be keen to get a deal done ASAP either way.

DECLAN RICE : WEST HAM TO CHELSEA
THE England youngster remains a top target for the big-spending Blues with Frank Lampard reportedly getting the green light from Roman to go all out for him.
The former Chelsea youth, 21, is seen as a solution to the club’s defensive frailties, with Lampard bringing him back to the position he used to play before West Ham converted him to a midfielder.
A move across the capital would be heartbreaking for Hammers fans, and it’s doubtful if the £80m the board would demand for Rice would ease the pain.

Man Utd forced to make Sergio Reguilon transfer decision ‘soon’ as Sevilla ask to have him back on loan from Real Madrid

MANCHESTER UNITED will have to make a quick decision on whether to sign Sergio Reguilon on loan.
It comes after United were believed to have been offered the Real Madrid defender on loan.

    1

Man Utd will have to make a quick decision on whether to sign Sergio Reguilon on loanAccording to Fabrizio Romano, the Old Trafford board are deciding “soon” on whether to take on the left-back.
But they will be rushed into making up their minds as Sevilla – who Reguilon played for last season – also want to bring back the 23-year-old.
The Spain international enjoyed a breakthrough season in Seville last term having been loaned out by Real Madrid.
He made 38 appearances and lifted the Europa League trophy.

And despite being voted LaLiga’s best left-back, Bernabeu boss Zinedine Zidane has no plans for Reguilon to stay in the capital this season.
But if the league champions wish to keep him on their books, the full-back could spend another season out on loan.
PSG, Juventus, Napoli and Tottenham are also among those interested in signing the player.

But United remain frontrunners to sign him, with Solskjaer keen to bolster his options at left-back and provide competition for places.

Luke Shaw remains injury prone while Brandon Williams is regarded as one for the future after his emergence.
Reguilon currently has no space in the Madrid side, with Ferland Mendy overtaking Marcelo as the club’s preferred left-back.

Tottenham star Steven Bergwijn tried to get Donny van de Beek to snub Man Utd and join Tottenham instead

STEVEN BERGWIJN tried to get Donny van de Beek to join Tottenham before his Manchester United transfer.
Dutchman Van de Beek joined United for £39million – beating Real Madrid and Spurs to the signing.

It came after 23-year-old Bergwijn – who played with the midfielder at Ajax – sent his international team-mate messages about moving to Tottenham.
Van de Beek, 23, said: “I have to say that he just sent me a message: ‘Are you coming to us or not?’
“We often have contact. We used to play together at Ajax for a long time and have actually always kept in touch.
“I think we will see each other again soon.

“But I chose to join United. It’s a fantastic step, and I think now is the right time.”
Van de Beek provides Old Trafford boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with his first signing of the window.
But it left former Arsenal player turned pundit Merson scratching his head, with United already filled with options in central midfield.
With Premier League rivals having already strengthen their squads, United were accused of rushing into business.

Merson told the Daily Star: “Donny van de Beek looks like a panic buy at Manchester United. I don’t get it.
“They just spent £40m on a position where they are already strong and how does he play with Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes?
“You have to have someone who can play the holding role.
“That signing looked to me like: ‘Oh we haven’t bought anyone yet, let’s go and buy someone, who can we get?'”

Man Utd boss Solskjaer ‘held talks with Timo Werner in Berlin’ before striker snubbed him to make Chelsea transfer

MANCHESTER UNITED manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer held talks with Timo Werner – before the striker joined Chelsea.
Werner, 24, was subject to interest from a host of Premier League clubs – including champions Liverpool – who wanted to meet his £47.5million release clause.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer travelled to Berlin to try and convince Werner to join Man Utd
According to Bild, United boss Solskjaer travelled to Berlin to try and convince the forward to join Old Trafford.
City manager Pep Guardiola is also said to have contacted Werner personally in an attempt to prize him over to the blue half of Manchester.
Ultimately Werner signed for Chelsea in June after Liverpool opted against making a move for the German.
The player admitted Chelsea boss Frank Lampard played a major role in his choice to pen a five-year deal at Stamford Bridge.

Werner said: “He [Lampard] was the main point.
“We talked a lot about things like the system, how he wants to play and sees me playing, and how the system fits me.
“He is a really nice guy who not only told me what he wants from me as a player because he wants to help me as a guy.
“He knows me now a little bit better and it fits very well between us and now I am happy to be here.”

Werner has now been joined by international team-mate Kai Havertz, who joined in a £70m deal.
The 21-year-old too revealed Lampard convinced him to join Chelsea.
Havertz said: “Of course he had a big impact on my decision because I loved him as a player and watched him very often, and I think I can learn from him now he is a manager as well.
“I think he is a very humble person and a great guy and I can’t wait to play with him and learn from him.
“He was very offensive like me and he loves to score goals, and I love to score goals as well so I think he will help me a lot in my position.
