Man Utd wonderkid Joe Hugill, aged 16, is 6ft 2in striker who plays like Kane and scored winning pen in EFL Trophy win

MESSI, Salah, Maradona… Joe Hugill is in good company.
Like those star forwards, the Manchester United wonderkid is blessed with a magical left foot capable of hurting the opposition.

It’s why the Red Devils paid Sunderland £300,000 for the 16-year-old back in the summer.
Hugill impressed with United’s U21 team in Tuesday’s EFL Trophy win over Rochdale, coming close when he hit the woodwork and scoring the winning penalty (with his right foot) in a shootout after the sides drew 0-0 after 90 minutes.
The 6ft 2in frame showed he is a capable target man – as comfortable receiving the ball on the deck as he is leaping for a long ball in the air.
Here’s why the Old Trafford hierarchy moved quick to secure Hugill’s services in the summer, beating off competition from Premier League rivals Arsenal and Tottenham.

    A TRUE MACKEM
Born and bred in Sunderland, Hugill spent his entire youth career at his boyhood club.
In recent years, the Black Cats have produced an incredible array of talent.
England goalie Jordan Pickford and Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson have risen to the top after coming through the ranks in the North East.
Josh Maja made waves in the Sunderland first team before he was signed by Bordeaux, where he is thriving in France.

And Sam Greenwood earned rave reviews for Arsenal’s youth sides, after joining the Gunners in 2018 from the EFL League One side, and recently earned a £3million move to Leeds United.
Like those mentioned, Hugill shone at the ‘Academy of Light’, playing for both the U18s and U23s.
    TECHNICALLY SOUND
First thing you’ll notice about Hugill’s game is his touch.
When the ball is played to feet it sticks, and he’s able to bring others into the game with his link-up play.
But there’s also goals to his game too.
On his Premier League 2 debut, with Sunderland rock bottom of the table, he scored twice against West Ham in a 4-2 defeat.
Hugill also scored a hat-trick against Shrewsbury Town in the FA Youth Cup – alerting scouts to his abilities.

    6

Although more slight in build, he has been compared to England hotshot Harry Kane in terms of his style of play.
He’s not blessed with pace, but he certainly knows where the goal is.
    UNITED’S YOUTH PUSH
Hugill is seen as one for the future by Nicky Butt, now head of first team development, but was formerly overseeing their youth set-up.

The graduate of the ‘Class of ’92’ oversaw the arrivals of Tahith Chong, Charlie McCann, France youth stars Aliou Traore and Hannibal Mejbri, Arnau Puigmal, and Largie Ramazani in that role, until Nick Cox took over the reigns last year.
And with his recommendation, Hugill was added to that list of promising youngsters.
Perhaps the class of 2020 can be just as impressive as Beckham, the Nevilles, Scholes and Co in years to come.

Man Utd winger Dan James’ struggles against Crystal Palace show need for Jadon Sancho transfer

MANCHESTER UNITED found themselves desperately needing some individual inspiration against Crystal Palace – the kind Jadon Sancho can provide.
They were stunned at Old Trafford in their Premier League opener, losing 3-1 against Crystal Palace.

    3

Daniel James was subbed off at half-time against Crystal Palace

    3

Jadon Sancho is the individual talent United are craving

The woefully lacklustre performance only highlights the mood at the club – they need an exciting prospect to inspire a turnaround.
Daniel James, 22, struggled against Palace, managing just one dribble before being replaced at half-time by Mason Greenwood.
Greenwood, 18, might have started had it not been for his Covid-19 breach of protocol during England duty this month.
James cannot be singled out individually for his showing – Anthony Martial, 24, and Marcus Rashford, 22, also underperformed.

But as the Welshman occupied the right wing United fans so desperately want Sancho, 20, to fill, evidently some frustration will be aimed his way.
The hosts seemed completely out of ideas as they failed to break down Palace’s stubborn 4-4-2 set-up.
New signing Donny van de Beek, 23, did pull one back to make it 2-1 only for Wilfred Zaha, 27, to net again against his former club.
Zaha’s second, an excellent solo goal finishing past David de Gea just inside the box, is exactly the kind of thing United are missing.

    3

United were stunned at Old Trafford in their Premier League opener, losing 3-1 against Crystal Palace

Ole Gunnar Solskjaker’s side are in need of a star able to get on the ball and make things happen.
Sancho is exactly the man to do that.
The England forward is a confident dribbler, hungry to take players on to open up shooting or crossing opportunities.
With 20 goals and the same amount of assists for Borussia Dortmund last season, it is the kind of form that could have inspired an individual comeback at Old Trafford on Saturday evening.

And if United are really adamant they won’t budge on Dortmund’s £109million price tag, their scouting department needs to look at alternatives.
As Liverpool and Manchester City have shown in recent years, champions possess game-changing options from both the start and the bench.
United lack that going forward despite having greater alternatives at the back and in midfield.
But it looks as though signing another goalscoring option has to be Solskjaer’s solution to overturning their fortunes.

Man Utd ‘agree five-year deal with Porto’s Alex Telles’ but clubs haggle over transfer fee with PSG showing interest

MANCHESTER UNITED have reportedly agreed a five-year contract with Porto left-back Alex Telles.
It comes after Tottenham pipped them to the signing of Sergio Reguilon, who has joined Spurs from Real Madrid.

Man Utd have reportedly agreed a five-year contract with Porto left-back Alex Telles

They have instead set their sights on 27-year-old Telles, and according to RMC, the player has agreed personal terms with United.
A transfer fee is yet to hashed out between the two clubs as PSG also remain interested in the defender.
United pulled out of the race to sign Reguilon, 23, due to Madrid’s insistence on inserting a buy-back clause into the deal.
And they turned their attention to Brazilian Telles, who is in the last year of his deal at Porto.

The Portuguese club risk seeing him leave for free at the end of the season if they don’t cash in now.
Telles’ renewal talks with Porto broke down after he asked for wages of up to £88,000 a week.
He joined the Portuguese champions in 2016 from Galatasaray and scored 13 goals with 12 assists in 49 appearances last season.
Telles is available without a buy-back clause and was previously on Chelsea’s radar before they signed Ben Chilwell for £50m from Leicester.

Man Utd target Alejandro Garnacho was the ‘jewel’ of Atletico’s academy, is obsessed by Ronaldo and wears the number 7

    WHEN it rains it pours.
Manchester United are continuing to reshape their academy with the addition of Europe’s hottest talents and are set to add Spanish wonderkid Alejandro Garnacho to their ranks.

The fleet-footed forward will be the third La Liga starlet join the club this summer, after the arrivals of Marc Jurado from Barcelona and Alvaro Fernandez from Real Madrid.
And Garnacho, 16, called the ‘jewel’ of Atletico’s academy, will be hoping to emulate his hero at Old Trafford.
He is obsessed by Cristiano Ronaldo, and even wears the same shirt number – No7.
    STIFF COMPETITION
The Red Devils are said to have fought off Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund to secure Garnacho’s signature.

Described as a ‘goalscoring machine’, the Madrid-born teenager was highly rated by Atletico, who are reportedly devastated he’s leaving.
He joined the club in 2015, impressing all with his killer instinct in front of goal.
In 2016, whilst playing for Atletico’s Infantil B, he was Spain’s top scorer – destroying opposition defences with his natural knack for finding the back of the net.

    QUICK AND NIMBLE
Blessed with a flawless technique, Garnacho boasts attributes including close ball control that make it difficult for defenders to rob the ball off him.

In the penalty area he’s intuitive and clinical, preferring to shift the ball onto his right foot before calmly slotting the ball home.
A real predator in front of goal, Garnacho is also adept at finding space in the penalty box, and is an instinctive poacher.
Moving to Old Trafford, he hopes, will see him emulate his hero Ronaldo, and was said to be a deciding factor in his decision to move.
    READY FOR STARDOM
From a young age Garnacho’s potential has seen him primed for the top.
Last season, he found himself enjoying run-outs for Atletico’s U19 team.

He turned 16 in July, which meant he was able to discuss deals with other clubs, and it has been reported that Atletico did everything they could to keep their star man.
But, reports suggest Garnacho has penned a five-year deal with the Premier League giants and is ready to make his mark on English football.
And all it will cost United is a compensation package for his training and development.

Solskjaer warns Man Utd youngster Ethan Galbraith to sharpen up after getting ‘caught on the ball’ vs Aston Villa

MANCHESTER UNITED boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has warned youngster Ethan Galbraith to sharpen up.

And Solskjaer singled him out for getting ‘caught on the ball’.
Speaking to the club’s website, the Norwegian said: “They’ll [young players] learn from it of course.
“Young Ethan Galbraith has been with us in the summer, in the Europa League, he’s been training with us and then he gets minutes today and you could see he’s got less time [on the ball].

“I spoke to him after the game and he knows a couple of times he gets caught on the ball but that’s the learning he needs.
“That’s going to make him, next time he’s on the pitch, be ready for it.”
Solskjaer reserved his praise for new signing Donny van de Beek, returning goalkeeper Dean Henderson and another youngster, defender Teden Mengi.
He added: “Donny was maybe the biggest plus outfield.

“He’s such a finder of space and creates time for himself with his timing and movement.

“I was very happy with his performance.”
Substitute shot-stopper Lee Grant joked that he had thrown a curveball into the David De Gea vs Henderson debate.
Red Devils No4 Grant, 37, humorously suggested he’d made it ‘even more difficult’ for Solskjaer to pick his team after keeping a clean sheet in his 15-minute cameo.
He told MUTV: “I thought he [Henderson] did fantastically well.
“David’s come back from international duty as sharp as ever.
“And I’ve kept a clean sheet today and made the gaffer’s job even more difficult next week.”

Aston Villa 1 Man Utd 0: Fuming fans demand transfers as Solskjaer’s men flop to defeat in pre-season friendly

MANCHESTER UNITED’s preparations for the new season appear to have suffered a dent with defeat to Aston Villa in a friendly on Saturday.
The Red Devils crashed to a 1-0 defeat in a game that was played behind closed doors to last season’s Premier League strugglers.

Villa’s £28million club record signing Ollie Watkins got the only goal of the match, just days after arriving from Brentford.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer revealed he was going to use the game “to give players minutes.”
His starting XI was: Dean Henderson; Diogo Dalot, Timothy Fosu-Mensah, Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw; Scott McTominay, Donny van de Beek; Jesse Lingard, Marcus Rashford, Daniel James; Odion Ighalo.
But they were unable to claim a result at Villa Park in their final preseason game before they finally begin their Prem season against Crystal Palace next weekend.

A notable absentee from the starting line-up was Paul Pogba, who only began training this week with the rest of the United squad after testing positive with coronavirus at the end of August.
The result left United fans fuming online – with some demanding the club invest in more players.

Man Utd announce three academy signings after poaching young talent from Barcelona and Real Madrid

Isak Hansen-Aaroen has joined Manchester United’s academy ranks

Jurado, 16, and Fernandez, 17, have been in quarantine since arriving in Manchester last month but have now received international clearance for the Spanish duo to join United’s academy.
Players require clearance from both relevant football associations before an international transfer can be approved.
Full-backs Jurado and Fernandez have already started intensive English lessons and were introduced to their new academy coaches via Zoom calls.
Arnau Puigmal and Mateo Mejia, two Spaniards already on the Red Devils’ books, have also been FaceTiming the pair to help them settle.

United have also given Jurado and Fernandez documentaries to watch about the club and the city of Manchester to help them adjust.
Manchester Evening News revealed last week Norwegian Hansen-Aaroen has already started training with United’s Under-18 side, along with fellow academy signings Joe Hugill, Logan Pye and Radek Vitek.
United beat Arsenal and Tottenham to the £300,000 signing of 16-year-old striker Hugill from Sunderland in May.
The 16-year-old was joined at United by Black Cats teammate Pye, also 16, while Czech goalkeeper Vitek arrived from Sigma Olomouc.

They look set to be joined at Carrington by Manchester City starlet Charlie McNeill, who has rejected a professional contract at the Etihad.
United are busy finalising a £750,000 deal to bring McNeill back to the club he supports and the England youth international will be placed in the U23 team.
They have also agreed a deal for Atletico Madrid youngster Alejandro Garnacho, with the striker due in Manchester later this week.
