Man Utd legend Wayne Rooney in line for Derby job as Rams chiefs lose patience with manager Phillip Cocu

WAYNE ROONEY is in line to become Derby boss — and may even be in charge by the start of next week.
The Rams face Watford on Friday night and another defeat could spell the end for under-fire Phillip Cocu.

Ironically, sources insist boss Cocu was only saved from the chop before the international break by Rooney’s late winner at Norwich a fortnight ago.
Yet he is still on the brink, and owner Mel Morris plans to turn to skipper Rooney, 34, if they lose against the  Hornets.
With England’s all-time leading scorer still to get all his FA badges, it means he will need an experienced, fully-qualified coach alongside him — and him — and former Rams manager John Gregory is the man they want.
Rooney joined Derby  as player-coach on an 18-month contract — with a further one-year option — when he returned from playing for DC United America in August 2019.

He began his coaching badges within months and admitted he first thought of a post-playing career in management when he was still at Manchester United.
Rooney insisted he always planned to become a boss one day, and revealed on arriving at Championship club Derby: “I’ve always been interested in it.
“When Louis van Gaal was manager at United, Ryan Giggs was analysing the opponents and I used to go in there for a few hours after training.”
Dutchman Cocu replaced Frank Lampard when he moved on to take the Chelsea job in July 2019, but missed out on the play-offs in a disappointing first season.

This campaign has been even worse, and after needing penalties to see off League Two new boys Barrow in the League Cup, Derby lost the next four games before Rooney’s late Carrow Road winner.
Mike Phelan, currently on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s backroom team at Old Trafford, had also been mentioned as a possible No 2 to Rooney.
Yet Gregory, 66, who was manager for 12 months before he was sacked in 2003, is  favourite.
He is available after leaving Chennaiyin FC, a year after he led them to the Indian Super League title two years ago.

Arsene Wenger reveals he ‘hated’ Sir Alex Ferguson during his 22-year Arsenal stint – but couldn’t help but respect him

IT was back in May 2018 that Arsene Wenger took charge of his last game as Arsenal manager.
And after ending his remarkable 22-year reign, he has taken a monk-like vow of silence on the Gunners.

    9

But now everyone’s favourite Frenchman has a new book to plug — and suddenly there is no shutting him up.
Wenger, who will probably celebrate his 71st birthday next Thursday watching a couple of Europa League games, has engaged in a seemingly endless round of interviews to coincide with the publication of My Life In Red & White.
The book might be short on revelations but his conversations remain fascinating.
Here are some of the highlights . . .

    ON MESUT OZIL
“Mesut has been the record player of assists so Arsenal have to find a way to get him involved again. Otherwise, it is a waste for him and for the club.
“He is at the age where a player of his talent can produce the most because he’s a super creative player who can come up with that killer pass in the final third.
“The way football is going now, it’s quick counter-pressing, quick transitions and everybody plays the same.
“It’s kicked out players like Ozil but we should not forget that this is a guy who played at Real Madrid and who won the World Cup.”

    9

    ON LOSING
“In my early years at Monaco, I felt, ‘I have to stop this because I am killing myself’.
“I was physically sick. I had to throw up after every defeat. And every big defeat was a scar in my heart for ever.
“Whenever I lost a game I would think, ‘How many families are unhappy tonight and who is responsible for that?’
“And I carried all that guilt until the next game.
“The people who have a big passion for the game suffer from it because they have a lot of selfish behaviour.
“The way I approached the job was best suited to a single person and, honestly, somewhere I think that I was a monster and I’m not very proud of that.”

    9

    ON THIERRY HENRY
“In 1999, I went to Juventus with David Dein because we wanted to sign Thierry Henry and they wanted to sign Nicolas Anelka.
“At three o’clock in the morning we agreed an exchange, plus £15million, for Arsenal.
“But Nicolas didn’t want to go to Juventus so we sold him to Real Madrid and we bought Thierry.
“At the start, Thierry was not sure that he could score goals but I made some exercises in training where I asked him to time the runs and his movement was exceptional.
“After that, whenever he played he knew the weaknesses of every defender after ten minutes of the game and always exploited that very well.”

    9

    ON FIRST ARSENAL IMPRESSIONS
“I inherited a team that was monoculturally English — tough guys you could go to a fight with.
“They were very good on the pitch and very good off the pitch at night and they were sceptical at first, because you don’t suppress the beers and wines without getting resistance.
“But when you needed men they were there and when I encouraged them to play out from the back, I discovered they were much better players than I thought at the start.
“And 1996 was a very sensitive time for me because I had nine players who were 30 or over and I knew at some stage I would have to tell these guys that it’s over.
“But in 1996 came the change of the TV money and that helped me a lot to change their style of life.
“Before 1996, they had not made much money. But from 30 to 35 years old they earned a good living.”

    9

The French manager joined Arsenal in 1996 Credit: PA:Press Association
    ON SIR ALEX FERGUSON
“The competition makes you hate the opponent. I think he certainly hated me and I hated him sometimes as well.
“Whenever we competed it was always a fight — always very tight and nervous.
“And don’t forget we also had to deal with Fergie time.
“But when the competition is over what remains is a deep respect for guys like him, for what they have achieved and how long they stayed in the job and dedicated their lives to it.”

    9

    ON PROJECT BIG PICTURE
“During my time in England the ownership moved from local people who are supporters of the team to multi-billionaires who have invested in the clubs.
“England has voted for Brexit to gain back control of their decisions — but in the Premier League you have lost control of these decisions.
“Only the Premier League and the big clubs can save the smaller teams and you have to find a compromise to help them survive or English football will drop.
“But I worry about the domination of the Premier League because that creates a lot of envy in France, in Spain, in Italy and in Germany and they won’t accept that for ever.
“They want to catch England back and Brexit will be a test for that.”

    9

    ON VAR TECHNOLOGY
“Before VAR, the number for correct decisions in England was 84 per cent.
    “Now it’s 95 per cent. That’s 11,000 more good decisions a year.
“But VAR technology also kills the emotional aspect because you have to wait too long for offside decisions.
“So maybe we have to change the offside rule and allow more tolerance. It’s very difficult to cancel goals out because a player is half an inch in front of a defender.
“Then we also have to sort out the penalty problem because it’s not clear in people’s minds.
“Football is at its most popular when it’s easy to understand. When we no longer know what is a handball or not, we have to change something.”

    9

Wenger says VAR kills the emotional aspect because you have to wait too long for offside decisionsCredit: Reuters
    ON JOB OFFERS
“I turned down every big club in Europe and did I stay at Arsenal too long? Maybe.
“Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Manchester United, Juventus, Paris Saint-Germain and England all made me a job offer.
“Certainly, I do not know too many people who have twice turned down Real Madrid.
“But I chose to stay at Arsenal even though it was a team which didn’t have the resources to win the championship.
“When we moved to the Emirates in 2006, I knew that we wouldn’t be the same for the next ten years.
“We had overspent on the stadium and that meant we couldn’t spend the money that we had before.
“I had the choice to lead the club through that sensitive period — or to leave.
“I decided to serve Arsenal and try to be successful with less resources.”

Man Utd star Pellistri’s godfather is a famous rock star and he’s been described as a ‘rascal’ on the pitch by Riquelme

ON transfer deadline day last week, Manchester United added two Uruguayans to their expensively-assembled squad.
One of them, of course, was Edinson Cavani – universally known as a goal-getter in Serie A and Ligue 1 through the years, and will provide competition upfront for Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford.

    7

Pellistri’s godfather is rock star Sebastian Teysera, second from the left

But the other, 18-year-old Facundo Pellistri, is relatively unknown on our shores and one for the future.
Little fanfare was made when the exciting winger signed from Penarol for £9million.
However, sounding the drum – quite literally – could be his rock star godfather.
Uruguay singer Sebastian Teysera, who boasts over 20 million views on YouTube, is also Pellistri’s biggest fan.

    LET’S ROCK
Teysera, 47, made his name with the band La Vela Puerca, who have scored hits in South America.
Infamous for their controversial logo – a drawing of the snout of a pig smoking marijuana – they formed in 1995 and play many types of music including punk and ska.
Pellistri was backstage one of their most iconic stadium shows – at the Estadio Luna Park in Buenos Aires – to celebrate his birthday.
Teysera led the band with a rendition of ‘happy birthday’ for his godson during the gig, which the crowd sang back.

Pellistri went to his godfather’s concert in Buenos Aires on his birthday and his Teysera serenaded him
A huge Penarol fan, Teysera always has time for Pellistri.
“Seba always calls me and congratulates me, he is a Peñarol fan and has come to see me (play),” Pellistri once revealed.
    FANS IN HIGH PLACES
Championed by ex-United star Diego Forlan, a former Penarol manager, it’s been reported the Uruguay legend convinced Pellistri his future belonged at Old Trafford.
And the top talent certainly has fans in high places.
Former Argentina playmaker Juan Roman Riquelme believes United have secured a gem – calling him a ‘rascal’ of a player.

Pellistri is described as a ‘rascal’ of a player

“He is young and talented,” Riquelme revealed.
“He hasn’t played that much but you can see he is a real rascal with the ball at his feet. And that is important.
“There aren’t many like him around, who have the courage to be so cheeky on the pitch. That is highly valuable.”

Man Utd’s best and worst and transfer deadline day deals, including Rooney, Berbatov, Falcao and Martial

MANCHESTER United are no strangers to the dance of transfer deadline day.
The Red Devils often dip into their cash reserves on the last day of the window and unveil a star signing.

This year, Edinson Cavani, Alex Telles, Amad Traore, Facundo Pellistri and Willy Kambwala were all signed with hours to spare.
But who joined previously on transfer deadline day and how well did they do?
    WAYNE ROONEY
Throughout the summer of 2004, Rooney, then 18, was linked with a move to Old Trafford.
Finally, on the last day of the window, the Liverpool-born forward was unveiled for £27million.

And he would go on to become a legend for the club.
He scored a record 253 goals, and won five Premier League titles, the Champions League, Europa League and an FA Cup.
Roo was not just a brilliant deadline day signing, he probably could be United’s best ever.

    DIMITAR BERBATOV
The Bulgarian striker, a ringer for Ocean’s Eleven actor Andy Garcia, joined United for £31m in 2008.
Before the season began, Sir Alex Ferguson was quoted as saying he expected to sign Berbatov from Tottenham.
Spurs complained to the Premier League, saying United broke the rules and Berbatov was dropped for the opening month of the 2008-09 season.
Eventually, United got their man and he enjoyed his best season in 2010-11 – scoring 21 goals in 42 games.

    RADAMEL FALCAO
On paper, United were getting a world beater.
Colombian forward Falcao was one of the most feared strikers on the planet, after starring at Atletico Madrid and then Monaco.
And when a loan deal with a view to a £44m permanent move was agreed, the fans were dancing on cobbled streets.
However, the move was a disaster for Falcao – who scored just four goals in 29 games for Louis van Gaal’s side.
It was no surprise that United didn’t exercise their right to buy him at the end of the loan but peculiarly Chelsea decided to take him the following season and, again, he flopped.

    SAIDY JANKO
    Who?
In 2013, Manchester United raided Swiss club FC Zurich for the versatile right back and winger paying an undisclosed fee.
He was one of only three signings made by David Moyes during that transfer window.
However, he made just one appearance – an ill-fated runout against MK Dons that ended in an embarrassing 4-0 defeat.
Janko was loaned out for the rest of the season to Bolton months later, before he moved to Celtic a summer after he was signed.

    MAROUANE FELLAINI
Another Moyes signing of the summer of 2013, Fellaini joined from Everton for a fee in the region of £28m.
But in his first season the giant Belgium midfielder made just 15 league starts.
Many pundits labelled Fellaini one of the worst buys of the season, and although things picked up in his second campaign at the club, Fellaini was always a bit-part player.
It was no surprise to see him shipped off to China in 2019, where he now plays for Shandong Luneng.

    REGAN POOLE
There were high hopes for the Welsh centre-back when he signed for £100,000 from Newport County.
Shortlisted for the Football League Apprentice of the Year award in 2015, Liverpool handed him a trial a few months after.
But that summer he joined United.
Poole made just one appearance for the club, coming on as a last-minute substitute for Ander Herrera in a 5–1 win over FC Midtjylland.
After loans to Northampton Town and back to Newport County, Poole, still only 22, signed for MK Dons last year on a free transfer.

    DALEY BLIND
The Dutch defender joined Manchester United in 2014 for a fee of £14m.
But two months into his career in England he sustained a knee ligament injury, which kept him out of action for the rest of the year.
Something of a utility player, Blind played at left-back, centre back and in midfield.
In 2018, United cut their losses with the Holland international – selling him back to Ajax for £14m.

    ANTHONY MARTIAL
Eyes were raised in 2015 when United settled on a deal worth £58m for Martial from Monaco.
At the time, it was the highest fee paid for a teenager and a huge outlay for someone who had the potential to be an Old Trafford great, but was unproven.
Martial, 24, has since silenced doubters – becoming the focal point of the Red Devils attack.

Last season the French international enjoyed his most prolific season at the club – scoring 23 goals in all competitions.
With time on his side, he could be a very important player for United in years to come.

However, the Red Devils are believed to have blocked the deal – and Everton signed Robin Olsen from Roma instead.
And that left Eliana Guercio, 42, furious. She immediately took to Instagram and demanded respect for her husband.
She wrote: “Last trophy they won, they lifted it with him. He helped the team reach 4 finals/semifinals and then he was left on the bench only to lose them all.
“It is time for them to return the opportunity and let him go. RESPECT FOR ONCE!!!!!”

But who is the fiery blonde sticking for her man?

Over the years Eliana was a men’s lifestyle magazine staple, appearing in many underwear and bikini shoots in South America.
She has also starred on TV in Argentina – most notably in “Más que diferente”, appearing fully nude on the show.
Eliana and Sergio met in 2008 and instantly fell in love.

Within seven months, pair married – and they have three children together, Jazmin, Chloe and Meghan.

Before the 2014 World Cup Rihanna reportedly revealed she fancied Romero

    12

Eliana didn’t feel threatened and said if Argentina win the World Cup she would lend Romero to Rihanna for a week
Any normal wife would have been horrified that the gorgeous singer may have declared an interest in their husband – but not Eliana.
She even joked that she would lend Romero to the Barbadian beauty, if Argentina won the World Cup!
“If we win the World Cup, I will let her have him for a week,” she said.
    NOSY NEIGHBOURS
Keeping in line with her tempestuous nature, Eliana wasn’t afraid to blast her neighbours in Manchester, who took offence to a playground installed in the backyard of their £2.8million home.
Neighbours believed it was an eyesore and distracted passing drivers because it was too big.
Eliana said she can’t understand what all the fuss is about.
She told Caras: “Where we put up the playground is part of our house, I don’t understand why the neighbours got annoyed.
“You can’t see the place where we put it, and besides, as soon as we put it up we went away for two months.

    12

Eliana has a fiery temperament as her neighbours can testify

    12

Neighbours were left fuming that a playground similar to this one was installed in the Romeros home

    12

Guercio snapped back and said the playground wasn’t an eyesore

    12

Eliana is not a woman to be messed with

“We came to Argentina, afterwards we went to the beach and afterwards when we returned, the girls went back to school.
“After 4pm, it’s already cold, so the girls don’t go out in the garden.”
Word of warning, this is one lady you don’t want to get on her bad side.

Man Utd star Diogo Dalot completes season-long loan transfer to Serie A giants AC Milan

OUT of favour Manchester United star Diogo Dalot has joined AC Milan on a season-long loan, the Serie A giants have confirmed.
The Portuguese right-back found himself surplus to requirements at Old Trafford, despite featuring in the Carabao Cup win over Brighton.

Last season, Dalot fell below Timothy Fosu-Mensah and Brandon Williams in the United pecking order.
And with reports suggesting that the Red Devils are near to a deal for Porto full-back Alex Telles before the transfer window closes tomorrow – Dalot could see his game-time limited even further.
AC Milan released a statement on Sunday: “AC Milan is delighted to announce the signing of defender José Diogo Dalot Teixeira on loan from Manchester United FC.
“Born in Braga (Portugal) on 18 March 1999, Diogo Dalot came through the youth ranks at FC Porto before making his first-team debut in 2017.

“During the 2017-18 season, Dalot made 8 appearances and won the Primeira Liga with the Portuguese team. In 2018 he moved to Manchester United where he made 35 appearances, scoring 1 goal.
“The defender has chosen to wear jersey number 5.”

Man Utd transfer target Alex Telles ‘to have medical tonight as Red Devils and Porto reach agreement on £18m move’

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have fought off competition from neighbours Manchester City to sign the 27-year-old Brazilian.
Telles will provide competition for Luke Shaw and a deal looks set to be completed ahead of Monday’s deadline.
Telles has just one year left on his Porto deal and could have walked away next year for free.

United previously had a bid of around £12m rejected by the Portuguese champs.
But reports suggest a deal has been struck after United upped their bid to match the £18m Porto were holding out for.
Solskjaer is believed to have pleaded with his board to find the cash to land his man.
And Ed Woodward and Co look to have come up trumps for their manager as United make inroads late in the market – with Edinson Cavani expected to also sign.

Personal terms were previously agreed with the player and agent Pini Zahavi.

Telles would join Donny van de Beek in arriving at Carrington during the summer window.
The Dutch midfielder arrived for £39m but the lack of further deals irritated fans – much to the frustration of boss Solskjaer.
It is no secret Jadon Sancho has been United’s No1 target throughout the window but time is running out to secure a deal for the Borussia Dortmund ace before the window slams shut.
