Man Utd AXE US firm who published financial results early during test in huge gaffe with debts reaching £455.5m

MANCHESTER UNITED have sacked the American firm who mistakenly published financial results early during a test, reports say.
US-based Toppan Merrill dropped the ball in November as they published the United’s quarterly financial results a day early.

It did not go down well at Old Trafford, with the error put down to a test run.
But according to the Daily Mail, the Stateside firm are no longer working with the club after being axed.
The pandemic has shut Old Trafford for 12 months, costing United around £6million in revenue every matchday.
But qualifying for this season’s Champions League helped plug the money gap, even though United exited at the group stage to go into the Europa League.

They banked £108.7million in broadcast cash for the first three months of the season, up £34m from the same period in 2019.
That more than made up for gate revenue falling off a cliff, with United taking just £1.5m, compared to £33.1m 12 months earlier.
The club’s total revenue stood at £172.8m, up £4.4m, bringing a profit of £63.9m – although the club’s net debt stands at £445.5m.
Unveiling the club’s latest financial results, executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward conceded the club was still in the middle of an unprecedented situation, although he believes there is ‘light at the end of the tunnel’.

Woodward said at the start of March: “This has been an extraordinarily challenging year for Manchester United, for football, and for society as a whole.
“It is almost 12 months since the pandemic began and we were required to close Old Trafford to supporters.
“Their absence has only highlighted the importance of fans to the fabric of football, and we can’t wait to welcome them back.
“Our focus remains on preparing for the return of fans to Old Trafford.
“The successful rapid rollout of vaccines and falling rate of infections in the UK makes us optimistic about the Government’s roadmap out of the lockdown, including plans for the gradual reopening of sports stadia to spectators beginning this spring.
“Initially this will be with limits on capacity, but we are hopeful of crowds ramping back up to full capacity next season.”

Gary Neville claims Man Utd star Luke Shaw is ‘best left back in country’ ahead of Matt Targett after City performance

GARY NEVILLE hailed Luke Shaw as the ‘best left back in country’ after his performance against Manchester City.
The defender scored United’s second goal in their 2-0 win at the Etihad, also helping them to a clean sheet.

And Old Trafford legend Neville claimed that at his best Shaw is the Premier League’s No1 left-back.
He told Sky Sports: “He’s been outstanding this season for United.
“A Luke Shaw [that is] fit, a Luke Shaw [that is] physically good, a Luke Shaw [that is] confident is the best left back in the country, in my opinion.
“But all those three things being combined at once has probably only happened at certain points in his career.

“And that’s been a problem for him. But certainly this is the best period he has had.
“We’ve seen him in the last week or two go down in a couple of games like he’s just on the edge a little bit.
“And that would worry me if I was Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
“I just think how they handle him in the next few weeks is important.”

Shaw, 25, has emerged as a contender for Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the delayed European championships this summer.
Ben Chilwell, 24, who signed for Chelsea for £50m from Leicester last summer, has been Southgate’s regular left-back in recent games.
But Aston Villa’s Matt Targett, 25, is also competing for a space in the squad after impressing Southgate.
Shaw has not played for England in three years, but Neville – a former right-back – believes he is now on the verge of another call up.

He said: “Gareth Southgate will be watching him intently, thinking, ‘Well I know Luke Shaw. I’ve seen him before’.
“He had [almost given up on Luke Shaw before] and you can’t give up on him now.
“He’s staring right at him and he’s thinking, ‘Well that is the best-performing left back in the country at the moment in terms of English left backs’.
“But he’s physically right, he’s mentally right and he’s clear of injury so everything’s right for Luke Shaw because he’s an amazing talent.
    “A brilliant talent.”

Man Utd wonderkid Noam Emeran, 18, was first signing of Solskjaer era, and has taken on Wayne Rooney’s advice to succeed

IN December 2019, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was temporary manager at Manchester United and there was very little transfer activity to get excited about.
The signing of 16-year-old Noam Emeran from French side Amiens was the only incoming name in an otherwise uninteresting January window that saw Marouane Fellaini leave the club.

After struggling his first year, Emeran has pushed on this season for Man Utd’s U18 sideCredit: Getty Images – Getty

The fact that the Red Devils had beaten the likes of PSG and Juventus to Emeran’s signature might’ve excited some fans.
But after struggling initially, the talented winger, now 18, could have fallen by the wayside. However, now he is beginning to settle into life in Manchester.
He’s currently starring for the U18 side, as well as been blooded into the U23’s.
And it was advice from Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney, which seems to have helped him turn a corner.

    ‘DETERMINATION’ IS KEY
Capped at U16 level by France, the fleet-footed forward was highly thought of in his homeland.
Manchester United weren’t his only suitors, with a host of other European giants watching his progress.
But he chose to come to England, where he believed he would get the best coaching to reach his potential.
“After talking to my family, I think it was the best choice over what I was offered to help reach the top level,” he told French local newspaper Le Courrier Picard.

On his arrival, he met Wayne Rooney who offered Emeran a nugget of truth.

“He told me: A player makes good or bad his career choice based on his determination,” Emeran told Le Parisien .
“I realised that I had to be demanding of myself.”
    INJURY-HAMPERED FIRST YEAR
When adapting to a new life and culture, a footballer needs to stay fit.
Unfortunately for Noam, his first season at the club was hampered by injuries and loss of confidence.
But, even though his career had initially failed to ignite, United’s youth coaches had seen enough to understand the ability the wide man had.

Although he had an injury-plagued time as a scholar, United saw enough potential to offer him a pro contractCredit: Instagram / @emeran.n
Possessing a wand of a left foot, he’s a menace when running at a defender and also has an eye for goal.
It was no surprise he was handed a pro contract, even though he had his problems in his first year as a scholar.
According to reports, Emeran was also a major influence in fellow U18 wonderkid Hannibal Mejbri choosing to join United from Monaco in 2019 for £9million.
    FAITH REWARDED
With the belief of United’s U-18 coach Neil Ryan in him, Emeran has shone for United’s youth sides this season.
Back in December, he was man of the match against Liverpool – providing three assists in a 4-3 win at the Aon Training Complex.
He, alongside Charlie McNeill, Dillon Hoogewerf, and Joe Hugill offer a frightening front four that have helped United’s U18 side climb to the top of the U18 Premier League table.
Emeran’s managed three goals and five assists from 13 games, and been one of the more consistent performers.

Chances in the U23’s have been limited – with the youngster making just two appearances from the bench.
But, United are just letting him flourish for now in his age group.
Given what Rooney told him, you can bet Emeran will keep working on his game to prove he has what it takes to light up Old Trafford in the future.

Man Utd star Cavani is Boca Juniors’ top transfer target, but his salary would be slashed from £200k a week to £70k

BOCA JUNIORS could not have had a better warm up for Sunday’s clash against their great Buenos Aires rivals River Plate.
And Carlos Tevez could not have had a better return to the team after taking some time off to mourn the death of his father.

Edinson Cavani could be heading to Boca JuniorsCredit: AFP

Away to an attractive Velez Sarsfield team, coached by former Southampton boss Mauricio Pellegrino, Boca won by an astonishing 7-1 margin.
Instead of playing Tevez behind a centre forward, they used him as a false nine, dropping to combine and opening up space for Colombian winger Sebastian Villa to cut in from the left.
In turn that opened up space for Colombian playmaker Edwin Cardona to thread his passes from the left of midfield.
The parts clicked wonderfully well. Playing without a specialist centre forward seemed to suit the team.

But there is excitement in Argentina that Boca will soon have the services of a genuine world class centre forward – Manchester United’s Uruguayan striker Edinson Cavani.
Argentine football plays big in its much smaller neighbour. And Cavani grew up watching a fellow Uruguayan, Sergio Martinez, bang in the goals for Boca during the mid 1990s.
He always had the ambition to pull on the famous blue and yellow shirt – and there are hopes in Argentina that he could be just a few months away from crossing that one off the list.
Cavani has made a far bigger impression at Old Trafford than many had predicted. He has shown that even at the age of 34 he still has plenty to offer – and plenty to teach some of his younger team-mates.

Cavani’s current deal with Manchester United expires at the end of the seasonCredit: PA:Press Association
His deal, which runs up to the end of the season, could be renewed for another year – providing both parties agree.
But the player has confessed that in the conditions of the pandemic it has not been easy for him to settle into Manchester.
Boca would offer the chance for him to go home – his native town of Salto is a little more than 200 miles away from Buenos Aires. And there is a chance at glory.
Boca have not won the Copa Libertadores, South America’s Champions League, since 2007. But they keep getting close – they reached the semi finals in the last two years, and were beaten finalists the year before.
With the knock out stage taking place in the second half of the year, Cavani could see out the Premier League season with United and then cross the Atlantic in time for the big games in the Libertadores.

Should Cavani leave Old Trafford for Boca he would have to take a hefty paycutCredit: Getty Images – Getty

It would mean taking a significant pay cut. According to the Argentine press, Cavani would want a three year deal, and would be happy to earn in that time the money he can make in one year with United where he earns around £200,000-a-week.
But even meeting these terms would not be easy for Boca, and there could be some delicate negotiations between the player and Boca director and former midfield maestro Juan Roman Riquelme.
For the time being, then, Edinson Cavani stays at Manchester United and Boca, without a specialist centre forward, prepare to take on River Plate.

Eric Bailly teases Man Utd captain Harry Maguire over his ‘big head’ leaving team-mates in stitches after win over City

An early penalty from Bruno Fernandes and second-half strike from Luke Shaw helped United end their neighbours’ long winning run, and close the gap in the Premier League title race.
Maguire, 28, led the celebrations on Instagram, but was brought back down to Earth by a hilarious comment from his centre-back partner.
Bailly, 26, wrote: “Top performance captain you have a big head!!!!”
Maguire, joining in with the banter, responded: “Thanks Eric. Really? I thought my head was small.”

Scott McTominay, 24, also found the funny side of it, posting laughing emojis.
Maguire hailed his side for their tactical approach, keeping a clean sheet in the process as they prepare to host AC Milan next on Thursday.
He said: “We have brilliant coaches and a brilliant manager and brilliant analysts as well.
“Credit to them because they are the ones who sent us out in that formation and those tweaks when they have the ball.

“We knew they were going to keep the ball at times and the positions that they find themselves in, they have a lot of possession.
“We’ve seen that in recent games, so we had to be patient at times, but we had to make sure we kept getting up to the ball, kept getting contact, keep making tackles.
“I felt that we did that really well. For sure we can improve, we can do better in parts of the game.
“But it’s an important win, an important performance after a disappointing trip to London in midweek.
“Now we have to dust ourselves down and go again. We’ve got another big game on Thursday.”

Man Utd boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says more of his players need to step up… not just Bruno Fernandes

OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER wants Manchester United to be a team of leaders — not just Bruno Fernandes.
The Portugal midfielder, 26, has been the Red Devils’ star man this term.

Yet even he has shown signs of fatigue of late and opponents have started singling him out as the man to keep quiet.
Now, ahead of today’s Manchester derby, the United boss urged the rest of his players to step up.
Solskjaer said: “We expect everyone to be a leader, everyone to take that responsibility.
“Of course it might be Bruno, but I know teams are trying to man-mark him at times.

“Taking responsibility is important for everyone. Don’t wait for things to happen, you’ve got to make things happen.”
United are the only side in the country unbeaten on their travels.
Yet they have stuttered of late and Wednesday’s draw at Crystal Palace was their third successive goalless stalemate.
In the meantime, their Etihad neighbours have continued to steam ahead.

But as much as he respects what Pep Guardiola is doing, Solskjaer reckons those hailing City’s approach need a reality check.
He added: “No one has invented any style by themselves. They have taken bits from other managers and teams.
“Every manager builds a team around a club’s culture and I have taken a lot from when I was here at United and in Norway.
“We have a culture at United we want to stick to. Traditions, built from Sir Matt and Sir Alex, of power and quick attacks.
“There have been loads of different ways of being successful and we as a club have been successful.
“We are getting better. The more time we get, the better we’ll become.”

Dean Henderson warned Man Utd No1 role is toughest job in football by skipper Harry Maguire

DEAN HENDERSON has been warned he has the toughest job in football.
Yet Manchester United skipper Harry Maguire has no doubts the keeper is ready to take a golden chance to establish himself as the club’s No 1.

Henderson, 23, who has played for United 14 times this season, will get a run of games after David De Gea returned to Spain for the birth of his daughter, and will be forced to quarantine when returning.
This means Henderson will face Manchester City today, AC Milan in the Europa League on Thursday and West Ham in the Prem next Sunday.
Maguire said: “Being a goalkeeper is an unforgiving place, especially when you play for Manchester United.
“It is probably the most scrutinised position in English football, maybe world football. And probably closely followed by the centre-backs!

“When you play for this club you have to like the pressure. He has the personality to do that, Deano.
“He will see this as an opportunity. Obviously I don’t want to put pressure on him but he’s a top keeper and he’s a lad who does not lack confidence!
“He knows it’s an opportunity and sometimes you have to take it.
“It is fantastic we have David with his experience and Deano is coming through. We have two very, very good keepers fighting for one place.”

Henderson returned in the summer from his loan at Sheffield United.
He has clean sheets in five of his last six matches but has only featured in four Prem games so today’s trip to City is a good test.
Maguire added: “It is not just the one game where he knows he will come in and then go back on the bench.
“It is the same as David picking up an injury, so he could have a run of games to build confidence. It must be tough, going in and out as a keeper.”
Henderson made his England debut in the 3-0 win over the Republic of Ireland in November and looks certain to be in the squad for the World Cup qualifiers later this month.
Maguire added: “He has all the attributes to play for England. You need that confidence, especially when you play for England as you get criticised for every goal you concede.
“It is something he will have to deal with.”

Man Utd ‘scouting Bayer Leverkusen star Edmond Tapsoba, 22, over transfer’ after being alerted to Burkina Faso defender

MANCHESTER UNITED are scouting Bayer Leverkusen centre-back Edmond Tapsoba after receiving a tip-off in Germany, reports say.
The defender has emerged as one of the hottest prospects in the Bundesliga over the last 12 months and he is said to have attracted attention from two other Premier League clubs.

Man Utd are reportedly scouting Bayer Leverkusen centre-back Edmond TapsobaCredit: AFP or licensors

But according to The Express, United have been keeping tabs on the 22-year-old on the advice of a ‘well-respected figure in Germany’.
Tapsoba signed for Leverkusen from Vitoria Guimaraes in January 2020, costing an initial £15.5million in a deal that could still rise to £21.5m in add-ons.
It is understood they were impressed by his confidence in bringing the ball out from the back and maturity at such a young age.
Tapsoba has now played every minute of league action this season, besides two games he missed due to coronavirus in late November.

He has also formed a partnership at the back with United academy graduate Timothy Fosu-Mensah, who left Old Trafford for Leverkusen.
Tapsoba’s previous deal included a release clause believed to be in the region of £44m, with Leverkusen uninterested in any offers below that sum.
They recently tied him down the Burkinabe international to a new contract that will run until 2026, with his release clause now likely to have been increased.
Tapsoba is right-footed, and United have long been in the market for a left-footed defender to partner Harry Maguire, who is currently paired with either Victor Lindelof or Eric Bailly.

Dayot Upamecano and Nathan Ake – who later signed for City – were both considered earlier this season but manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer failed to bring in a centre-back.
Tapsoba was the subject of a last-minute enquiry from Liverpool in the winter window as the champions desperately looked to bring in defensive reinforcements.
But they were told by Leverkusen to pay the £44m release clause, with Jurgen Klopp instead signing Ben Davies from Preston and Ozan Kabak from Schalke.
Tapsoba has also been a target for Leicester and Wolves with both eyeing a summer move.
