Man Utd prospect Hannibal Mejbri called up by Tunisia national team after switching allegiances from France

MANCHESTER UNITED prospect Hannibal Mejbri has been called up to Tunisia’s national team after switching allegiances from France. The midfielder was born in Ivry-sur-Seine, France and represented them at youth level.

But his father, Lotfi, is Tunisian and played in his homeland and now his son is set to follow in his footsteps.
Current club United confirmed the 18-year-old has been called up to Tunisia’s first-team.
Mejbri is in their squad for upcoming games against DR Congo, Algeria and Mali next month.
He recently won United’s Under-23s Player of the Year award for his performances in Neil Wood’s side.
Mejbri made his senior debut coming as a substitute on the final day of the season at Wolves, helping his side to a 2-1 win.
The playmaker, who signed from Monaco in 2019, was talked up by manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer last month after watching him in training.
Solskjaer said: “Of course, you drip-feed them in and you don’t expect them to set the world alight.
“But you want to see them in this environment and he’s looked comfortable and confident.

“Hopefully, we can give him that extra motivation and inspiration to show even more of his talent and why not?”
Before moving to Old Trafford, Mejbri also drew interest from Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and Tottenham Hotspur.

Man Utd fans always turn up… it’s about time the team did as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s trophy hunt goes on

THE MANCHESTER UNITED fans turned up.Yes, they always do.
Manchester United fans gave the team plenty fo support in the Europa League FinalCredit: Getty
They even turned up in Cologne last season for the closing stages of the Europa League, just so they could be in the same city as their team even when there was no hope of getting in the stadium.
They still went there to cheer the team bus in and then returned to the town centre to watch the game on TV.
One fan even flew back after the quarter-final for work and returned for the semi.
The bloke who has not missed a United game in 47 years, he’ll have turned up.
Even with the Covid restrictions in this country he has driven to Old Trafford and all away grounds, sat outside in a car park and watched the match on his phone.
Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s trophy hunt continuesCredit: Getty
Yes, even twice in five days from Manchester to Brighton and back at the start of last season.
So, he will most have definitely turned up.
As did everyone who scrambled to get one of the 2,000 tickets available to watch perhaps the club’s most woeful ever performance in a major final.
The price of them turning up?
Having had a Covid test before leaving and before returning and now self-isolation for at least five days and having to stick swabs down their throats another three times.

At a conservative estimate all that alone comes to around £300.
Knowing that, they still turned up.
So when manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says after another disappointment in a major cup competition that his team just ‘didn’t turn up’ it is not going to wash.
Some with red spectacles on will look back and claim a season of progression.
From third to second and from four Cup semi-final defeats to a final.

And they will be right, this is not a call for Solskjaer to go and I have backed him all the way.
But having said that, nights like Wednesday cannot be dismissed with a shrug, because there is real anger at that performance.
Words are not enough this time.
With a few exceptions there was a lethargy in that showing that was simply unacceptable.
Two shots on target in 120 minutes against a side that finished seventh in La Liga.

They only had one, but they knew they weren’t as good on paper, but could find a way of getting through on the pitch and they did.
United were not up against Bayern Munich. Villarreal had a team with rejects from North London and one from Merseyside.
But once again faced with a well organised team that sits deep, United cannot find the answer.
For Villarreal think Sevilla in the semi last season.
Both teams looked more determined and had more belief in their plan and destiny.

Neither allowed the enormity of the situation overwhelm them.
Much like RB Leipzig in their final Champions League group game. Having lost 5-0 at Old Trafford they managed to beat United 3-2 at home to go through at their expense.
While there is no disgrace losing to Manchester City in successive League Cup semi-finals the woeful exits to Chelsea in the last four of the FA Cup last season, when David de Gea chucked another one in, and Leicester in the quarter-finals this season were unforgiveable.
Too often United allow big games to drift away from them without anyone grabbing it by the scruff of the neck.
For all the understandable lauding of Bruno Fernandes he can go into a sulk when the ball is not finding him.

The likes of Mason Greenwood was praised by some, but he needs to score and score more.
If Marcus Rashford wasn’t fit don’t play him, put Paul Pogba on the left and Nemanja Matic alongside Scott McTominay.
    As for the goalkeeper.
Well you can understand him going with De Gea given Dean Henderson’s performance against Liverpool.
But the Spaniard looked like someone who didn’t want to be there, he was at fault for the goal.
Villarreal won the Europa League Final after beating Manchester UnitedCredit: Pro Sports Images
As for the penalty shoot-out – I’ve seen blokes coming out my local crumble to the ground with more grace than he did as he kept falling the wrong way in that shoot-out.
It was therefore no surprise when his tame kick brought the whole sorry episode to an end.
That was the signal for all the usual ‘ we must work harder’, ‘we’ll come back stronger’, ‘this disappointment will drive us on’.
The players will now head off to the Euros and get this out their head before finding a beach for a month ahead of the new season.
They will return to Carrington and talk about a summer of soul searching after the guff in Gdansk.
United fans are growing tired of this.
As the clock ticked towards midnight on Wednesday and the faithful trudged back into central Gdansk, the drinks that were meant to toast victory were now to drown sorrows.
Perhaps the team could have ‘turned up’ to witness that.

However, the star forward hasn’t been able to avoid criticism throughout his glittering career as some have claimed he spends too much time worrying about how he looks.
Pantic is one of those critics as he believes the Portugal international represents a generation that’s much different to his glory days.
The former attacking midfielder suggested that players today spend more time on their looks rather than their game.
Pantic told La Resistencia: “I took off my shirt [after scoring in the 1996 Copa del Rey final] and I don’t know why, because I don’t have abs like Cristiano Ronaldo.
“In my day, players didn’t love the mirror so much. Now players love the mirror a lot.”

Ronaldo has cemented his legacy among football’s greats as he is the Champions League’s record scorer with 134 goals.
However, the United legend has struggled this season at Juventus and rumours suggest he could be on his way out of Turin.
Juve failed to defend their Serie A crown, finishing fourth in the process, and were eliminated from the Champions League in the Last 16.
Just seven players have managed to score a hat-tricks of CL hat-tricks

The Bianconeri managed to save face by winning the Coppa Italia but the 36-year-old cast doubt on his future by claiming he has already achieved what he set out to do with the Italian giants.
Ronaldo posted on his Instagram: “The Italian Super Cup, the Italian Cup and the Serie A Top Scorer trophy fill me with happiness, mainly due to the difficulty they carry with them, in a country where nothing is easy to win.
“With these achievements, I reached a goal that I had set myself since the first day I arrived in Italy: to win the Championship, the Cup and the Super Cup, and also to be Best Player and Top Scorer in this great football country.”

United failed to win the Europa League after losing to Villarreal on penalties.
The Yellow Submarine opened the scoring on 29 minutes with Gerard Moreno and the Red Devils equalised in the second half with Edinson Cavani after 55 minutes.
De Gea then failed to save any of the LaLiga side’s 11 penalties, which extended his miserable spot-kick record to 40 without a single save for club and country.
The Spain international then saw his own shot being saved by Villarreal goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli.

The England international converted his spot-kick but it ended in heartbreak as keeper David de Gea missed the deciding kick.
It meant United went another season trophyless, their last being the Europa League in 2017.
Rashford, 23, tweeted that he was racially targeted after the loss, including by a school teacher.
He posted: “At least 70 racial slurs on my social accounts counted so far.
“For those working to make me feel any worse than I already do, good luck trying.
“I’m more outraged that one of the abusers that left a mountain of monkey emojis in my DM is a maths teacher with an open profile.
“He teaches children!! And knows that he can freely racially abuse without consequence…”
A statement from Greater Manchester Police later read: “We are aware of a number of racially aggravated social media posts made yesterday evening towards numerous Manchester United players.”We are working through the posts from yesterday, which originate from countries across the world as well as the UK, to investigate these crimes.
“Tackling hate crime remains a priority for GMP. We take these reports very seriously and are working with our partners to ensure those responsible are identified.”Nobody should be subject to hateful language and abuse and it is deeply upsetting not only to those who receive these comments, but to anyone who witnesses it on a public forum.”Those who make these posts subject themselves, not just to criminal proceedings but to long-term implications to their personal and professional lives by making these comments.
“We would always encourage anyone who has been a victim, or witness of hate crime to report it at the earliest opportunity via 101, LiveChat or online. Alternatively you can visit www.letsendhatecrime.com.”
Rashford was emotional after picking up his runners up medal, but vowed to turn around United’s fortunes next season.

Best Man Utd European wins, from beating Bayern Munich in the last minute to George Best’s demolition of Benfica

WILL victory in Gdansk in the Europa League final provide another magical European night for Manchester United?Over the years, the Red Devils have enjoyed themselves on the continent – and have a decorated history because of it.
Manchester United have enjoyed many a glorious a night in EuropeCredit: Alamy
The Red Devils have won the European Cup/Champions League three times, as well as the Europa League, European Cup Winners’ Cup, Super Cup, Intercontinental Cup, FIFA Club World Cup – notching some famous victories along the way.
So if you’re feeling nervous ahead of tonight’s final United fans, you need not worry.
We take a look at Manchester United’s greatest European victories to boost morale ahead of the showdown with Villarreal.
MAN UTD 2-1 BAYERN MUNICH, 1999
They came into the game as underdogs, severely hindered by the absence of midfield hardman Roy Keane and Paul Scholes, who were suspended.
And for large periods of the game they were outplayed, and in truth were lucky to be only 1-0 down going into the final moments of the 1999 Champions League final.
The Germans appeared victorious, substituting legend Lothar Matthaus, who received a hero’s welcome as he was clapped off the pitch in the last minute.
But as the game went into injury time, a scramble in the box was only half-cleared. Ryan Giggs mishit a shot outside the box that fell to Teddy Sheringham, who scuffed the ball home.
Then, just seconds later and with United sniffing blood, they won a corner which was whipped in by Beckham, headed down by Sheringham for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to stick out a foot and knock the ball into the roof of the net.

    MAN UTD 2-1 BARCELONA, 1991
Being underdogs in European finals has always suited United.
In 1999, they faced Johan Cruyff’s Barcelona – featuring Ronald Koeman, Michael Laudrup and Julio Salinas in their star-studded line-up in the 1991 European Cup Winners’ Cup final.
However, that all-star Barça side didn’t scare United one bit.
After a drab first half, United took the lead in the second after a Steve Bruce header was tapped over the line by Mark Hughes.
The Welshman spectacularly added his second of the night with 16 minutes to go, rounding goalie Carles Busquets and finishing from a tight angle from outside the box with a ferocious shot.
A late free kick from Koeman failed to stir a comeback, and it was United’s night to celebrate.

    PSG 1-3 MAN UTD, 2019
When United lost the first leg of their last 16 tie in the Champions League to the French champions in 2019 2-0, few gave them a prayer to comeback.
History was against them, no team had EVER lost a tie 2-0 at home and won an away leg to go through to the next round of the competition.
However, two first half goals from Romelu Lukaku put United in dreamland.
Then, a controversial VAR decision for handball gave Marcus Rashford the opportunity to score from the penalty spot, which he did with aplomb.
It’s still, probably, United’s best performance under boss Solskjaer.

    JUVENTUS 2-3 MAN UTD, 1999
United don’t do things the easy way.
On their way to winning the 1999 Champions League, they faced off against Italian giants Juventus in the semi final, who boasted Zinedine Zidane and “That lad must have been born offside” Filippo Inzaghi.
After scraping a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford, United found themselves 2-0 down after 11 minutes in Turin and were heading out.
But Roy Keane saw things differently, leaping above Zidane to head home from a corner and give United a lifeline.
Then came the Dwight Yorke and Andy Cole show, with the latter crossing for the former Aston Villa man to head home an equaliser.
Cole sealed the sensational comeback, after tapping in from a tight angle when team mate Yorke was brought down after rounding the keeper.

    BENFICA 1-4 MAN UTD, 1968
The stage was Wembley Stadium, a fitting arena for United’s first ever European triumph.
And it was their favourite son George Best who stole the show, scoring a wonder goal to set his side on their way to victory in the ’68 European Cup final.
The game headed into extra time, when a late Jaime Graça levelled Bobby Charlton’s earlier strike.
Like he was famous for, Best went on a mazy run three minutes into the first period of extended time.
Faced with goalie José Henrique, he threw him with a dummy before rolling the ball into the empty net.
United added twice more to end with a comfortable 4-1 win.

    MAN UTD 1-0 BARCELONA, 2008
On their way to winning the 2008 Champions League, United were handed a tough tie against Barcelona in the semi-final.
The first leg finished 0-0, with Cristiano Ronaldo missing a penalty, so it might’ve looked like they’d blown a good opportunity.
But when Paul Scholes ferociously rifled a shot past Victor Valdes from 25-yards in the 14th minute, they began to believe another final was their destiny.
And despite the efforts of a young Lionel Messi, Andres Iniesta, Thierry Henry, and Samuel Eto’o – Barcelona were kept at bay by a brilliant defensive performance from Rio Ferdinand and Wes Brown.
Wild scenes followed the final whistle with the Theatre of Dreams rocking from the crowd’s cheers.

    MAN UTD 7-1 ROMA, 2007
It goes without saying, but before this moment Sir Alex Ferguson and Manchester United had enjoyed so many glorious nights in Europe.
But Fergie would later say that this was his side’s best ever performance under him in European competition.
You might have forgotten, but United were 2-1 down going into the second leg of this quarter final match.

And this was a Roma side full of talent – with Daniele De Rossi and Francesco Totti their talisman.
But they were powerless as United raced to a 4-0 win before half time with goals from Michael Carrick, Alan Smith, Wayne Rooney, and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Ronaldo added a fifth, Carrick then got his second, before Patrice Evra got himself on the scoresheet to record an 8-3 aggregate win.

Elanga only made his Prem debut against Leicester City earlier this month as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer turned to the academy because of United’s fixture pile-up.
The teenage Swede, 19, started on the left wing against the Foxes but was thrust into a more central forward role against Wolves.
And Elanga paid back Solskjaer’s faith by scoring a great header as United rested senior stars including Bruno Fernandes ahead of Wednesday’s Europa League final against Villarreal.
The youth star impressed for the Under-23s this season before his senior call-up.
But Elanga’s lack of experience meant he did not even have a Wikipedia page before his breakthrough against Leicester.

Yet there was no doubt he would get one soon after, however, with his 11 goals in 20 U23 games and show of faith from Solskjaer proving he has a bright future – even after he missed a month of this season because of a fractured collarbone.
Along with Amad Diallo, who also started against Wolves, Elanga is the latest talent off the United conveyor belt.
His dad Joseph Elanga was a professional footballer, who earned 17 caps for Cameroon and was called up to the 1998 World Cup squad.
Last season, Anthony was handed the prestigious Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year award, which has previously been won by first-team Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood.
In March, Elanga was rewarded for his rapid progress with a new long-term deal at Old Trafford.

    KEEPING IT IN THE FAMILY
Anthony’s father Joseph could say he taught him everything he knew.
But the elder Elanga, now 41, wasn’t a forward like his son. He was a defender, who made a career for himself in Europe – in countries including Greece, Sweden and Denmark, before retiring in 2012.
His best years were with Malmo from 2000-2005, who he won the Swedish championship with in 2004. He would join the club for one season again in 2010 and win a second league title.
Joseph was a member of the Cameroon 1998 World Cup squad, but didn’t play a game.
During his career, however, he did manage to gain 17 caps for his country.

    A THREAT UPFRONT
United’s youth sides are blessed with promising forwards, with the likes of Shola Shoretire, Charlie McNeill and Dillon Hoogewerf all showing they have a bright future in the game.
Like them, Elanga has the ability to play out wide or though the middle as a No9.
Predominantly right-footed, he uses his pace and skill to beat his man, often cutting in before unleashing a shot on goal.
His solo runs are reminiscent of a young Ryan Giggs, who could take three or four players out of a game in one swashbuckling gallop.
Elanga has been with the Red Devils since the U12s, joining the academy from Sunday League side Hattersley FC.
In 2019-20, after a prolific season with the U18 side with who he scored seven times in nine games, he was the recipient of the Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year award

    HOPEFUL FOR THE FUTURE
Elanga – who scored two goals in five matches for Sweden’s U17s – had excited Solskjaer in training before his first-team debut.
“He’s got an X factor, some attributes, it’s not like a gift, but he’s got the acceleration, pace, speed, that’s a given for wingers and he’s got qualities I like,” the Norwegian explained.
“He’s a goalscoring winger, he’s confident, he likes to beat men, right foot, left foot, he’s got a great attitude.”

Elanga is equally as positive for his future, and knows what he has to do to impress his boss.
Back in November he told PA, “You look at the likes of Mason and Rashy, there is a pathway there.
“It just shows you that if you’re willing to put the work into it and continue to work hard day in, day out in training there’s a pathway for you there.”

    HEROES IN THE GAME
In an interview with The Athletic last year, Elanga revealed who he models his game on.
“Thierry Henry was my idol and I tried to match my game with his,” he said.
“He was quick. He could play anywhere across the front three – striker, left wing, right wing – and that’s how I want to replicate my game.”

Manchester United legend Gary Neville caught a glimpse of Elanga in full flight, when he co-commentated on United Under-21s 6-0 win over Salford City in the EFL Trophy last year.
He said the youngster was a “nightmare to play against” and called his goal “Thierry Henry-esque.”
If he’s half the player Henry was, United have got themselves a real talent.
