Man Utd verdict: Solskjaer will demand to know why his players couldn’t match Leicester’s energy as away streak ends

LEICESTER completed a hat-trick of victories over Manchester United for the first time in 120 years – to spectacularly halt United’s record 29-game unbeaten away run.On an afternoon dripping in goals and excitement it was Brendan Rodgers’ Foxes who emerged victorious at the end of this extraordinary six goal thriller.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer cut a forlorn figure as Man Utd lostCredit: Getty
United simply had no answer to Leicester’s energy and persistence and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer should demand to know why.
Even Harry Maguire’s return couldn’t stem the flow of goals as the Foxes ran riot during a sensational second-half performance.
Solskjaer cut a forlorn figure at the end as he marched on to the pitch to congratulate Rodgers’ heroes.
But United fans would have preferred to see him head for the away dressing room to plug-in the famous Fergie hairdryer and await his players return.
Despite taking the lead after 19 minutes with a stunning Marcus Greenwood opener, United flattered to deceive.
Leicester, with James Maddison and Kelechi Iheanacho dovetailing perfectly behind evergreen Jamie Vardy had started the brighter.

But Greenwood stunned them with a peach of a goal against the run of play.
The 20-year-old worked a 1-2 with Bruno Fernandes before dodging past Timothy Castagne and firing in a ferocious shot which flew in off Kasper Schmeichel’s far post.
However Leicester shrugged off that setback and equalised with an even better strike of their own.
United were the architects of their own downfall.
Paul Pogba took a short free kick on the edge of his own box and when De Gea fed Maguire the comeback man was so busy deliberating the options ahead of him, he failed to sense danger.
Iheanacho robbed him of possession and rolled the ball to Youri Tielemans who then produced a moment of sheer class.
The Belgian didn’t break stride as he curled in a right foot shot which soared over De Gea and dropped just under the bar at the far post.
It was an extraordinary goal to drool over yet, incredibly, Leicester were just getting started.
In a second half crammed with goals, the home side took the lead after 78 minutes as United failed to deal with a Tielemans corner.

Harry Maguire’s header was pounced on by sub Patson Daka who drilled in a shot which De Gea blocked with his feet.
And the Turkish defender slammed the loose ball home.
Solskjaer’s decision to send on comeback striker Marcus Rashford had an instant pay-off when the England striker scored on his first outing of the seaso, outstripping Leicester’s spreadeagled defence before expertly beating Schmeichel.
At that point United would have probably settled for a share of the spoils. But Rodgers’ men had other ideas.
Vardy hammered home the latest in a long line of brilliant strikes to leave De Gea helpless, before Daka put the icing on the cake with a close range finish to grab his first ever Premier League goal.
United will be alarmed by this defeat and manner in which they ran up the white flag at the end with some dismal defending their undoing.
Last season Solskjaer’s men only won once in eight attempts against their top five rivals.
This was their first test of the season against one of those teams and they flunked the test again!
With Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea to come in the next 45 days Solskjaer has to demand more steel from his side.

His ex-academy mentor Kieran McKenna liked the 20-year-old to United boss and former striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
McKenna told MUFC website: “It’s great timing for Mason that he’s been able to work under such a great striker in Ole.
“There aren’t many better than Ole in the history of the football club for goals in the penalty area, the different type of finishes from inside the penalty area, anticipatory movements in the box.
“Ole was really strong and passionate about that and it’s something for Mason to work on.”
Despite the wonder strike, United were pegged back on the half hour mark as Youri Tielemans equalised.
The game finished 4-2 to the Foxes which is bound to increase the pressure on Solskjaer.

John Terry’s dad was furious he snubbed Man Utd for Chelsea so refused to join him on pitch as he signed first deal

JOHN TERRY once revealed his dad was so furious he snubbed Manchester United for Chelsea that he refused to join him on the pitch as he signed his first contract.Terry, who had been playing for West Ham at youth level up until the age of 14, had the choice of joining the Blues, United or Arsenal.
Jonh Terry’s dad was so furious he snubbed Man Utd for Chelsea he refused to join his son on the pitch as he signed his first contract
But after falling in love with Chelsea, the legendary defender defied his dad’s wishes and refused a United contract.
And the former Aston Villa assistant manager Terry told the Footballer’s Guide to Football podcast in June 2020: “My dad never wanted me to sign for Chelsea.
“Actually, on the pitch of me signing my schoolboy form at the club, my dad refused to go on the pitch with me.
“I’m in the tunnel, the players are coming off the pitch and I’m waiting in the tunnel, Glenn Hoddle goes past and my dad’s going, ‘You’re not signing for this football club, we should sign for Man United’.
“Again, me being me at the time I’m going, ‘I’m 100 per cent I’m signing here, if you don’t come out with me I’m going out to sign’.
“And you needed a parent, so my mum said she would come and sign it with me, my dad’s going mad at my mum, ‘No you wont’.
My dad never wanted me to sign for Chelsea. Actually, on the pitch of me signing my schoolboy form at the club, my dad refused to go on the pitch with me.John Terry

“There’s a picture of my mum and Graham Rix signing my contract, but my dad refused and absolutely kicked off that night. Again, me being the character I was, I knew Chelsea was right for me.
“One night that was probably supposed to be one of the best nights of my life turned out to be a tough one for a young 14-year-old to be honest.”
Terry’s instinct to sign for Chelsea paid off, as he went on to win five Premier League titles and FA Cup’s as well as lifting the Champions League in 2012 before leaving the club in 2017.
But the legendary centre-back revealed he did come close to joining rivals United, and even visited the club several times over a year with David Beckham.
Terry said: “I actually went up to Man United for a year, so I was kind of travelling up in school holidays, I went up with David Beckham when he signed his first pro contract.
“We went up in the car together, I was there on a two-week training camp.
“I went up, stayed up for a couple weeks every school holiday really on my own, which was tough to be fair, being away from home.
“Then I had the option between Arsenal, Chelsea and Man United and to be fair all of them went above and beyond.
“The moment I walked into Chelsea, it just felt right, I know that’s going to sound really bizarre.”

RAPHAEL VARANE has lauded Paul Pogba’s ‘positive’ influence on Manchester United’s squad. And the Red Devils newbie revealed his compatriot played a huge part in his decision to swap Real Madrid for the Premier League.

Varane was speaking to Premier League World ahead of Les Bleus’ 2-1 Uefa Nations League final triumph over Spain on Sunday.
The centre-back, 28, who hopes to be fit to face Leicester City at the weekend, said: “He (Pogba) spoke to me about the club, about the atmosphere, about the expectations and, of course, he is a great player.
“He has a great energy, a very positive energy, and he is a leader for the group.”
Varane, who moved to England this summer after ten years in LaLiga, began his senior playing career at 17 with French side Lens.
He has enjoyed major success in Spain and on the international stage with current club-mate Pogba.
The duo were part of the France side that won the 2018 World Cup in Russia, beating Croatia 4-2.

And both players have started the season in impressive form with £89million superstar Pogba notching up eight assists and one goal in 13 appearances across all competitions.
The midfielder, who is yet to sign a new Red Devils contract with his current one expiring next summer, has reportedly been offered an eye-watering new deal worth £104m.
Meanwhile, Varane, who has registered one assist in five games since his £42m United move, is fully focused on his future in Ole Gunnar Solksjaer’s squad.

How Liverpool missed out on Cristiano Ronaldo just a week before Man Utd transfer after ‘fee trebled’ overnight

LIVERPOOL failed to sign Cristiano Ronaldo only a week before he joined Manchester United after Sir Alex Ferguson gazumped his rivals, according to Phil Thompson. The then-Reds assistant boss has revealed that his team were one of many English clubs interested in the Portuguese forward.
Ronaldo went on to become a mega star at Old TraffordCredit: PA:Press Association
Ronaldo had already declared that a move to Anfield was “a dream” with agents Paul Stretford, Jorge Mendes and Tony Henry negotiating his exit from Sporting CP.
In recalling the 2003 transfer to The Athletic, Thompson states that a £4million fee was required.
He noted: “I asked what kind of salary he would want and they said it was £1 million per year after tax. That was a lot for an 18-year-old kid but they said that was negotiable.
“It was a Sunday and I explained to them that I needed to go back to Liverpool and speak to Gerard Houllier and see what we could do. I fed all the information back to Gerard, who said he would speak to [chief executive] Rick Parry.
“Lo and behold, the following week I’m at Melwood when the yellow ticker on Sky Sports News says: Manchester United sign Cristiano Ronaldo from Sporting for £12.2m.
    “I couldn’t believe my eyes.”
As Thompson says, United had not paid the £4m fee earlier touted and he was left shocked at how the figure changed overnight.

The former defender continued: “Tony told me that when he’d got off the plane on the Monday he had got a call to say he was off the deal. It was down to Stretford and Mendes instead.
“It was astonishing that the fee trebled.
“He was clearly a big talent but no one could have predicted back then how great he was going to be.”
Ronaldo went on to win a treble of Premier League titles in Manchester with 118 goals in almost 300 appearances in his first spell with the club.

Ronaldo previously revealed he also had shin pads dedicated to his partner Georgina Rodriquez, which he wore in the summer Euros.
Soon after, he returned to Old Trafford in a dramatic transfer after leaving Juventus.
Since coming back, he has five goals in six games, including a recent Champions League winner against Villareal.
But manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer decided to bench Ronaldo – who he spent four playing years with.
Explaining his decision, Solskjaer said: “Well Wednesday night was a big effort, big emotional and physical output so we needed to freshen it up for the early kick-off.
“The start of this game is going to be very important, we’ve got some very good players coming in. It’s a team that we believe is going to take charge.”

Edison Cavani replaced Ronaldo up front and Anthony Martial was also given a start out wide.
Solskjaer added: “Point to prove? There always is when you’re on the pitch.
“They know they are good players, they know they are going to be very important for us.
“If we are to be successful this season we need to rotate, manage the minutes, we need to make sure we are a big squad and we are together.”
Martial scored the opener for United but Andros Townsend equalised in the second half.
It leaves United with five points from their last three league games.

Inside Man Utd legend Roy Keane’s life – from 20-year marriage to wife Theresa to his controversial playing career

In recent years, Roy Keane, 50, has reinvented himself as a TV pundit on Sky Sports – championed for his sharp analysis, rapport with Micah Richards and wicked sense of humour.
Although, he has made no secret that he would love to return to management, throwing his hat into the ring for the Celtic job back in April.
But away from football, the Ireland legend lives a very private life.
    THERESA DOYLE
This year, Keane surprised us all when he set up an Instagram page, where he’s uploaded pictures of his family, including his grandchildren.
Still missing from it, though, is his wife of 20-years, Theresa Doyle.
The pair met in 1992, when the midfielder was playing for Forest under Brian Clough.
“I spotted a beautiful girl in a club in town. Her name was Theresa Doyle but she blanked me,” Keane once revealed of his encounter with the Nottingham-born beauty.
“She was in a steady relationship and didn’t seem at all impressed by Roy Keane, the great footballer. In fact, I think my reputation was as a downer for all kinds of reasons.
“From time to time we ran into each other around Nottingham. I knew some of her friends, who told me Theresa was a dentist’s assistant.

“Eventually, after her relationship broke up, she relented and we went out together. I was in love.”
They got married in a private ceremony at the Church of Our Lady Crowned in Mayfield, Cork, where Keane is from.
Keane rarely mentions his wife in public, but once opened up about their relationship in a revealing interview with the Sunday Times in the early 2000s.
“I don’t really mention her in public, but in fairness to her, she has been a rock in my life. Just brilliant. She reads me better than I read myself,” Keane said.
“I wouldn’t say Theresa likes every part of the package. She knows I haven’t got a halo over my head. Actually, that’s what she likes about me. She also knows I am not the nastiest person in the world.”
    FIVE CHILDREN
Keane and Theresa have five children together, Shannon, Caragh, Aidan, Leah and Alanna.
Even though the former footballer has tasted plenty of success on the football pitch, nothing comes close to spending time with his family.

In his autobiography, when writing about winning the Champions League in 1999, Keane said he “longed to go home to Theresa and the kids” and wasn’t interested in celebrating with his team-mates.
However, despite his wish to spend more time with them after hanging up his boots, he previously admitted that they wanted him to get back to work after just two months.
“My plan when I first stopped was, we’re going to go on some family trips, we’re going to be like the Waltons,” Keane joked.
“We’re all going to spend time together, go walk in the park and after a month or two they didn’t have the same plan as me so I think they were kind of missing me going to work.
“I got offered the job at Sunderland and I was away on a family holiday and my family were looking at me… not saying it directly but going we kind of enjoy your company but not too much of it so when the job came back up they were saying you should go for it.”
    MEET THE PARENTS
Roy’s late father Maurice ‘Mossie’ Keane met his mum Marie at a local dance, and they married in 1963.
They moved to the Mayfield suburb in Cork, where they raised five children, Denis, Johnson, Hilary, Roy and Pat.

Keane always shared a close bond with his parents and regularly made sure they had tickets to watch his games at Forest and United.
The generous son also bought them a home in the countryside in nearby Rathpeacon.
In 2019, Keane was devastated when Maurice passed away after battling illness. He was 79.
    AS A PLAYER
When Keane was a schoolboy, he began playing football for local side Rockmount AFC.
From there, he moved to Irish First Division team Cobh Ramblers of County Cork in 1989.
Keane was spotted by ex-scout Noel McCabe, who immediately recommended the talent to Brian Clough.
After impressing on trial, he moved to Nottingham in 1990 and blossomed into one of the best young midfielders in the country.

Sir Alex Ferguson brought Keane to Manchester United in 1993 for a British transfer record fee of £3.75million.
Keane went on to become one of the Premier League giants’ greatest captains – winning seven Premier League titles, a Champions League, as well as four FA Cups.
He retired in 2006, after one season in Scotland at Celtic where he played 10 times.
    IRISH FALLOUT
Keane’s career has been rocked by scandal over the years.
But nothing hurt more than missing the greatest football competition in the world in 2002.
Keane played 65 times for Ireland between 1991-2005, but his international career is unfortunately remembered for his fallout with Mick McCarthy before the 2002 World Cup.
Keane wasn’t happy with the Irish team’s set-up ahead of the prestigious football tournament and left the training camp.

After a confrontation with McCarthy at the team hotel, he flew home and was famously quizzed by reporters about his acrimonious exit while walking his dog near his home.
Without him, Ireland managed to reach the last-16 before they were beaten by Spain on penalties.
    AS A MANAGER
Most recently linked with Celtic, Keane previous experiences have been varied in terms of being a success.
In his first job as Sunderland boss, you could actually say he did well. He took over the Mackems in 2006 when they were second bottom of the Championship.
In his first season, they managed to win the league and gain promotion. But he stood down from his post before Christmas – with Sunderland struggling in 18th position in the Premier League.

Then came a spell at Ipswich, where he failed in a promotion bid and was sacked in 2011.
Keane returned to the international fold as assistant manager to Martin O’Neill, and was a key member of the coaching set-up that saw Ireland qualify Euro 2016.
O’Neill and Keane left their jobs after a series of inconsistent results left their jobs hanging by a thread – and reunited briefly at Forest in 2019.

Man Utd verdict: Immortal Cristiano Ronaldo was always going to produce on record breaking Champions League night

WE should have known he’d come up with something special to mark his place in the record books. When has Cristiano Ronaldo ever done anything on the same lines as other mere mortals?
Record-breaking Cristiano Ronaldo stole the show again after a quiet night against Villarreal in the Champions League
The night he edged clear of Real Madrid legend Iker Casillas on 178 Champions League appearances, more than anyone in this competition’s glorious history.
And the night he waited until deep into the final minute of stoppage time to turn an instantly forgettable evening into one those here at Old Trafford will always remember.
Okay, nothing like the prize on offer the last time he pulled on a red shirt in the Champions League at this ground, but boy, certainly as dramatic as most of the rest.
Seconds left, a game when his one sniff of a goal had been a way over the top header from barely six yards out and there it was, suddenly, staring him in the face.
A deep cross from Fred, a nod back from Ronaldo, a stretched boot by Jesse Lingard… and there he was, bang in front of keeper Geronimo Rulli and the goal gaping.
Yes, yes, yes, no prizes for guessing what came next. A drilled finish, the ball in the back of the net off Rulli’s hand, and Ronaldo racing to the touchline tearing his shirt off.

Booked, of course, but did he care? Did the vast majority of those inside this most famous of stadiums give a monkey’s? Did they hell.
Oh, and just for good measure it stretched his all-time Champions League goalscoring record to 136 as well.
All a million miles away, too, from all that had gone before.
For up to that point the only thing of note was a hugely comedic moment with fellow 36-year-old Raul Albiol.
The Villarreal veteran was booked for grabbing him round the waist to ensure he went no further as he raced away. Rather like two pensioners fighting for the last seat on the bus.
Talking of going no further, at that point, indeed for huge chunks of the game, you wouldn’t have stuck much on Ronaldo going much further than the group stages in this year’s comepetition either.
Everyone knew that flying start he made had to come to a halt at some stage. As he toiled against the Spaniards, though, it seemed to have come a little earlier than we all expected.

And another night of United fans pouring out in delighted glee as their favourite chant of Viva Ronaldo echoed into the Manchester air.
