Newcastle 1 Man Utd 1: Edinson Cavani rescues Ralf Rangnick’s men after Allan Saint-Maximin’s stunning strike

HOW Newcastle only got a point against this Manchester United rabble will be a mystery for the ages. Before the game, the Magpies were seen as relegation fodder in dire need of the Saudi petro-dollars to rescue them in January if they were to avoid the drop.

Then the whistle blew and, against all the odds, Toon battered the Red Devils from pillar to post.
As bad as Man United were – and they really were horrendous – Eddie Howe’s side were exceptional.
So to only come away with a point will have to go down as a massive missed opportunity.
A famous – and monumentally important – win was brewing on Tyneside after Allan Saint-Maximin set them on their way.
But they failed to take advantage of this bizarrely one-sided clash and were punished in the end by sub Edinson Cavani’s scrappy strike with 19 minutes remaining.
Nobody expected them to take anything from it, but to come away without the win will be a real kick in the Geordie goolies.
However, if they carry on playing like this, they should stay up with ease – even without any January reinforcements.
For Manchester United, this was as bad – no, worse – than some of the dross served by under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

How they spent those 15 days off in between their last game is anyone’s guess.
Super sub Cavani rescued Ralf Rangnick’s flops with his sixth goal in 17 appearances off the bench.
On at half-time for Mason Greenwood, the Uruguayan’s first shot from Diogo Dalot’s cross was blocked.
But the ball fell straight back into his path, and while his second was scruffy, it found the net to save them from the ultimate humiliation.
It’s all about chasing Arsenal and Tottenham for that last top four spot for Rangnick.
However, if they continue like this, they’ve not got a hope.
Rangnick made two chances after the underwhelming 1-0 win at Norwich, bringing in Raphael Varane and Mason Greenwood for Victor Lindelof and Jadon Sancho.
There were six changes for Newcastle on the back of their 4-0 defeat to Manchester City but through a mixture of injuries and Covid could only name eight subs – including two keepers.
Allan Saint-Maximin missed the chance to get a secondCredit: AFP
St James’ Park was typically noisy and boisterous under the lights at kick-off, but it exploded in joy after Saint-Maximin put Toon ahead seven minutes in.
Minutes before, Maguire had made a right dog’s dinner of a simple clearance to allow Ryan Fraser in down the right.
Varane – making his first appearance since injuring his hamstring eight weeks ago – bailed the England defender out, but the Frenchman was then culpable for the opener.
Not that Varane was the only one.
He made the first – and major error – when caught sleeping on the ball by Sean Longstaff.
The Newcastle midfielder nicked it and played it left to Saint-Maximin, and the magic man did the rest.
Cutting inside Diogo Dalot, the route to goal started to look blocked.
Not for trickster Saint-Maximin though, who then skipped inside again, this time past Maguire’s feeble challenge, before bending his fourth of the season beyond David de Gea into the far corner.
If that was the wake up call the Red Devils needed, it didn’t work.

Sloppy doesn’t even start to cover some of their atrocious play in the opening half.
Giving the ball away seemingly at every opportunity, the game was there for Newcastle to take a stranglehold of.
The rejuvenated Joelinton curled one inches wide and Jonjo Shelvey stung De Gea’s palms from 25 yards.
Surely Cristiano Ronaldo would drag them out of this latest hole?
Well, if anything captured Man United’s woes, it was the Portuguese star taking a wild air kick in front of the mocking Gallowgate.
And there was delirium inside St James’ when Callum Wilson found the net moments later, only to be flagged for offside.
Talismanic striker Wilson then hobbled off and was replaced by Jacob Murphy just before the break.
And Rangnick shook up his flops by hooking Fred and Greenwood and for Jadon Sancho and Edinson Cavani.
Cristiano Ronaldo looks on in frustrationCredit: Getty
Not that it helped at first, with the visitors only still in it thanks to a shocking miss from Saint-Maximin within two minutes of the restart.
Emil Krafth beat Scott McTominay and delivered it on a plate for the goalscorer four yards out.
But his shot was weak and miscued, giving De Gea a chance to scramble across and smother.
Marcus Rashford almost made Toon regret it immediately with a swerving shot from distance tipped over by Martin Dubravka.
Cavani was next, scuffing a good chance wide after being teed up by Sancho.
And all that frustration boiled over moments later when Ronaldo came flying in with a rash, full-blooded kick on Ryan Fraser.
St James’ – now an absolute bear pit – was baying for a red, only for ref Craig Pawson to show Ron a yellow.
Newcastle hit the post late onCredit: Reuters
United had all the ball but Toon were a constant threat on the break, and Joelinton – a man possessed all night – played in Fraser for a great chance, saved comfortably by De Gea.
Saint-Maximin then forced the Spaniard into a smart stop down to his left 66 minutes in, with Man United STILL all over the place.
But the longer it remained 1-0 the nervier it was always going to get, and 71 minutes Rangnick’s side had their equaliser.
Dalot’s low cross found Cavani but the Uruguayan’s sweetly hit first effort was blocked.
Falling back to him, his second was scruffy as you like, but with Dubravka off balance it squirmed into the corner.
There was still time for a winner though and, unsurprisingly, Newcastle looked the more likely.
In the dying minutes, sub Jacob Murphy rattled the post before De Gea pulled off a sensational save to deny fellow replacement Miguel Almiron on the rebound.

Man Utd stars back in training after Covid outbreak and Lindelof looks to have finished Xmas shopping with Amazon boxes

MANCHESTER UNITED are back in numbers as their squad returned to training after their recent Covid outbreak. The Premier League side had been hit by a spate of coronavirus cases among players and staff.

That forced the training centre to be closed – but Cristiano Ronaldo, 36, and his team-mates were recently pictured back in Carrington.
Defenders Harry Maguire, 28, and Victor Lindelof, 27, were among United stars to have been pictured driving into the training ground.
And it looked as though Lindelof had been bust Christmas shopping, with what appeared to be Amazon boxes in the back of his car.
United saw their last two games, against Brentford and Brighton, postponed as the virus ravaged the squad.
But striker Marcus Rashford provided a positive update ahead of their Bank Holiday Monday trip to Newcastle.
Speaking to the club website, Rashford, 24, said: “The lads have been training and today we brought all the rest of the lads back to training, there are only a couple left that will be coming in tomorrow.
“So, we’ve pretty much got the full squad back, which is a positive going into the week.”

Man Utd icon Roy Keane’s life – from 20-year marriage to wife Theresa to his controversial playing career

ON the pitch, he was the enforcer at Nottingham Forest, Man Utd and CelticOff it, he’s a milder family man, loyal husband of wife of 20-years Theresa, father of five kids and a generous son.

In recent years, Roy Keane, 50, has reinvented himself as a TV pundit on Sky Sports – championed for his sharp analysis, rapport with Micah Richards and wicked sense of humour.
Although, he has made no secret that he would love to return to management, throwing his hat into the ring for the Celtic job back in April.
But away from football, the Ireland legend lives a very private life.
    THERESA DOYLE
This year, Keane surprised us all when he set up an Instagram page, where he’s uploaded pictures of his family, including his grandchildren.
Still missing from it, though, is his wife of 20-years, Theresa Doyle.
The pair met in 1992, when the midfielder was playing for Forest under Brian Clough.
“I spotted a beautiful girl in a club in town. Her name was Theresa Doyle but she blanked me,” Keane once revealed of his encounter with the Nottingham-born beauty.
“She was in a steady relationship and didn’t seem at all impressed by Roy Keane, the great footballer. In fact, I think my reputation was as a downer for all kinds of reasons.
“From time to time we ran into each other around Nottingham. I knew some of her friends, who told me Theresa was a dentist’s assistant.

“Eventually, after her relationship broke up, she relented and we went out together. I was in love.”
They got married in a private ceremony at the Church of Our Lady Crowned in Mayfield, Cork, where Keane is from.
Keane rarely mentions his wife in public, but once opened up about their relationship in a revealing interview with the Sunday Times in the early 2000s.
“I don’t really mention her in public, but in fairness to her, she has been a rock in my life. Just brilliant. She reads me better than I read myself,” Keane said.
“I wouldn’t say Theresa likes every part of the package. She knows I haven’t got a halo over my head. Actually, that’s what she likes about me. She also knows I am not the nastiest person in the world.”
    FIVE CHILDREN
Keane and Theresa have five children together, Shannon, Caragh, Aidan, Leah and Alanna.
Even though the former footballer has tasted plenty of success on the football pitch, nothing comes close to spending time with his family.

In his autobiography, when writing about winning the Champions League in 1999, Keane said he “longed to go home to Theresa and the kids” and wasn’t interested in celebrating with his team-mates.
However, despite his wish to spend more time with them after hanging up his boots, he previously admitted that they wanted him to get back to work after just two months.
“My plan when I first stopped was, we’re going to go on some family trips, we’re going to be like the Waltons,” Keane joked.
“We’re all going to spend time together, go walk in the park and after a month or two they didn’t have the same plan as me so I think they were kind of missing me going to work.
“I got offered the job at Sunderland and I was away on a family holiday and my family were looking at me… not saying it directly but going we kind of enjoy your company but not too much of it so when the job came back up they were saying you should go for it.”
    MEET THE PARENTS
Roy’s late father Maurice ‘Mossie’ Keane met his mum Marie at a local dance, and they married in 1963.
They moved to the Mayfield suburb in Cork, where they raised five children, Denis, Johnson, Hilary, Roy and Pat.

Keane always shared a close bond with his parents and regularly made sure they had tickets to watch his games at Forest and United.
The generous son also bought them a home in the countryside in nearby Rathpeacon.
In 2019, Keane was devastated when Maurice passed away after battling illness. He was 79.
    AS A PLAYER
When Keane was a schoolboy, he began playing football for local side Rockmount AFC.
From there, he moved to Irish First Division team Cobh Ramblers of County Cork in 1989.
Keane was spotted by ex-scout Noel McCabe, who immediately recommended the talent to Brian Clough.
After impressing on trial, he moved to Nottingham in 1990 and blossomed into one of the best young midfielders in the country.

Sir Alex Ferguson brought Keane to Manchester United in 1993 for a British transfer record fee of £3.75million.
Keane went on to become one of the Premier League giants’ greatest captains – winning seven Premier League titles, a Champions League, as well as four FA Cups.
He retired in 2006, after one season in Scotland at Celtic where he played 10 times.
    IRISH FALLOUT
Keane’s career has been rocked by scandal over the years.
But nothing hurt more than missing the greatest football competition in the world in 2002.
Keane played 65 times for Ireland between 1991-2005, but his international career is unfortunately remembered for his fallout with Mick McCarthy before the 2002 World Cup.
Keane wasn’t happy with the Irish team’s set-up ahead of the prestigious football tournament and left the training camp.

After a confrontation with McCarthy at the team hotel, he flew home and was famously quizzed by reporters about his acrimonious exit while walking his dog near his home.
Without him, Ireland managed to reach the last-16 before they were beaten by Spain on penalties.
    AS A MANAGER
Most recently linked with Celtic, Keane previous experiences have been varied in terms of being a success.
In his first job as Sunderland boss, you could actually say he did well. He took over the Mackems in 2006 when they were second bottom of the Championship.

Keane returned to the international fold as assistant manager to Martin O’Neill, and was a key member of the coaching set-up that saw Ireland qualify Euro 2016.
O’Neill and Keane left their jobs after a series of inconsistent results left their jobs hanging by a thread – and reunited briefly at Forest in 2019.

UFC legend Khabib snubs Lionel Messi as Cristiano Ronaldo’s pal picks two players he says should have won Ballon d’Or

KHABIB NURMAGOMEDOV picked Robert Lewandowski and Karim Benzema as his most deserving of the Ballon d’Or award. Lionel Messi, 34, pipped UFC legend Nurmagomedov’s close friend Cristiano Ronaldo, 36, to the prize.

But several believed Bayern Munich’s Lewandowski, 33, was hard done by having been overlooked in the competition.
The Pole came second, with Chelsea’s Jorginho, 29, third and Real Madrid’s Benzema, 33, in fourth.
Football-mad Khabib said: “I would give it to Lewandowski or Benzema. One of them.
“Lewandowski, I think. Last three years, he is the best football player.
“We can just look at his results. What he does. He has won the Champions League. He has scored more than 120 goals last two years.
“For the national team and club. It is an amazing result.

“For the entire football history, I cannot remember, we can name a pair of players who scored 120 goals over two years.
“He has 65 goals this year. It is too much. For football I think it is too much. I think he deserves Ballon d’Or.”
Nurmagomedov, 33, retired in October 2020, right after beating Justin Gaethje, also 33.
It was his first and only fight without his influential father and coach Abdulmanap, who passed away in July of last year.
Khabib vowed never to continue without his dad and has since retired to focus on coaching.
But rumours circulated that the former UFC champion, who speaks regularly to Manchester United’s Ronaldo, was starting a footballing career.
He even received an offer from Russian third tier football side FC Kamaz, which was not taken up.

Ex-Manchester United defender Smalling then flicked home with a header of himself to open the scoring.
Abraham, who signed from Chelsea in the summer, has scored ten goals in his 22 appearances this season.
Roma currently sit sixth in Serie A, 12 points ahead of league leaders Inter Milan, who thumped them 3-0.
An under-fire Mourinho said before the game: “The thing I want to make clear for the 100th time is this: Obviously I would really like to be fighting for different targets, but I am really pleased to be here.
“I want to make that very clear. I am very happy to be at Roma, to be leading a very different project to the others I have had in my career.
“I am very, very happy. And there is no doubt that I am giving everything I have to this battle. I am really happy here.”

Roma lost their last match to Inter, and Mourinho pointed to the Italian champion’s far superior team and Roma’s ‘absentees’.

“This became an extremely difficult match tonight because of absentees.
“They finished 29 points above us last season. We had three big chances, two of which came at 0-0.” More

Covid-hit Man Utd in talks over delaying Brentford clash after closing training ground and will not travel to London

MANCHESTER UNITED have closed their training ground after a recent Covid-19 outbreak. United had positive lateral flow tests returned on a number of players and staff and the Premier League have been informed.

And now the club confirmed they have shut Carrington for 24 hours and cancelled training.
As a result, United are in talks with the Premier League about whether they will play Brentford tomorrow.
It will also see them hold off travelling to London while awaiting a decision.
A statement read: “Manchester United can confirm that following PCR test confirmation of yesterday’s positive LFT Covid-19 cases among the first team staff and players, the decision has been taken to close down first team operations at the Carrington Training Complex for 24 hours, to minimise risk of any further infection.
“Individuals who tested positive are isolating per Premier League protocols.
“Given cancellation of training and disruption to the squad, and with the health of players and staff the priority, the Club is in discussion with the Premier League whether it is safe for Tuesday’s fixture against Brentford to continue, both from a Covid infection and player preparation perspective.”

Team and staff travel to London will be deferred pending the result of that discussion.
Tottenham had to postpone both their UEFA Conference League fixture against Rennes last week and yesterday’s trip to Brighton.
Covid ripped through the Spurs camp following their 3-0 victory over Norwich.
Norwich boss Dean Smith then feared there would be cases in his own camp, but tests came back negative.
United’s whole group that travelled to Norwich had tested negative beforehand.
SunSport received subsequently there were positive tests among a small number of players and staff who had to be sent home from Carrington today.
The rest trained outdoors and training had to be adjusted to individual and non-contact sessions.

VICTOR LINDELOF suffered a worrying heart scare as he was helped off in Manchester United’s win over Norwich. The defender dropped down in discomfort and had his hand on his chest when United medics rushed onto the pitch during the second half of United’s 1-0 victory at Carrow Road.

Lindelof, 27, complained of chest pains and a racing pulse after an innocuous collision.
After a few minutes he was taken off the pitch and replaced by Eric Bailly.
Keeper David de Gea said the incident sparked reminders of Christian Eriksen’s Euro 2020 collapse when the Dane suffered a cardiac arrest.
United boss Ralf Rangnick revealed: “Victor had problems to breathe and his heart rate was higher than normal. He was a little shocked.
“He can’t remember how it happened but he had a collision with another player. After the game we checked him.
Rangnick added: “It seems everything is OK but we will have to see tomorrow. Hopefully he will be fit for Tuesday against Brentford.”

Eriksen was resuscitated on the pitch after collapsing during Denmark’s opening game against Finland and survived thanks to quick action by team-mates and medics.
Former Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero was diagnosed with a cardiac arrhythmia after suffering chest pains when playing for Barcelona against Alaves.
Aguero’s future in the game remains unclear and De Gea said: “We saw some players who are feeling a bit of problems with their breathing. We saw Eriksen and Aguero.
“It is difficult to see your players acting like this and I hope he is fine. As soon I saw it was difficulty with breathing, it does not matter about the game — the main thing is to be safe.”
Soon after Lindelof exited the game, Cristiano Ronaldo, 36, converted from the spot, which was the only goal separating the sides.
It leaves caretaker boss Rangnick unbeaten in his three matches in charge since replacing sacked Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
And it is three Premier League wins on the spin for United, who climbed to fifth, level on points with fourth-placed West Ham, who have a game in hand.

Man Utd boss Rangnick ‘wants four transfers including Jude Bellingham and Erling Haaland to overhaul team’

NEW Manchester United boss Ralf Rangnick has identified four transfer targets, reports say. The German replaced Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in November until the end of the season.

And according to ESPN, Rangnick highlighted United’s midfield as a key area to improve when being interviewed.
His shortlist include Borussia Dortmund’s Jude Bellingam, 18, Leeds star Kalvin Phillips, 26, and RB Leipzig’s Amadou Haidara, 23.
Bellingham’s Dortmund team-mate and long term United target Erling Haaland, 21, was also mentioned by Rangnick.
But both Bellingham and Haaland are among the hottest properties in Europe with the duo expected to be pursued by a number of clubs.
Hopes of landing Haaland have taken a blow however, with his agent naming Man City as a better option.
Fred, 28, and Scott McTominay, 25, started in Rangnick’s first game in charge – a 1-0 win over Crystal Palace last Sunday.
Fred scored the winner and the Brazilian won praise alongside midfield partner McTominay, but Rangnick admitted improvements could be made.

He said: “They did one or two or three mistakes, especially in the first half there were two square passes; one from Scott, one from Fred.
“I don’t like those kinds of balls in midfield in those positions.
“But overall, when the other team is in possession of the ball, both Fred and Scotty they are almost perfect for that kind of football.”
Rangnick is expected to be backed in January but has also been told to expect a quiet window.
The manager also gave teenagers Charlie Savage and Zidane Iqbal, both 18, senior debuts.
