Jack Grealish reveals ‘most painful injury’ that was worst Man City doctor had seen and left him unable to walk

MANCHESTER CITY had looked to be taking their Treble-winning success in their stride but all of a sudden have started limping — just like their £100million man Jack Grealish. After six straight Premier League wins to kick off the campaign, Pep Guardiola’s men have now lost their last two, prompting fears of a backward step after the stratospheric highs of last season.
Manchester City star Jack Grealish suffered the “most painful injury” against Sheffield UnitedCredit: Getty
Grealish played just ten minutes of those back-to-back losses to Wolves and Arsenal, coming on as a late substitute at Molineux, as he battles back to full fitness following a dead leg sustained at Sheffield United in August.
Normally that type of injury would not cause too much bother and certainly not for one of the most fouled players who has suffered more than his fair share of them over the years.
But this one was so bad — the worst City’s club doctor Max Sala had ever seen, according to Grealish — that the England star could hardly walk.
Speaking ahead of Friday’s friendly with Australia, the 28-year-old gave a fascinating insight into how the problem has blighted his campaign.
    Read More on Man City
Grealish revealed: “Apart from the kidney injury I had  six years ago, it was the most painful injury I have had.
“You might all laugh at me now, it was only a dead leg, but it was the worst dead leg I have had in my life.
“I get so many of them over the years and I am usually good at taking them, taking the hits and stuff.
“If you get a dead leg and you have a haematoma (where trauma damages  veins or arteries) the blood, if you have a bad one, it’s like 6cm. Mine was 20cm!
    Most read in Football
“Our doc at City, who has worked at AC Milan and everything, said, ‘That’s the worst dead leg I’ve ever seen, by a mile’.
“And it wasn’t even bad, the tackle. It was Ollie McBurnie against Sheff U. If I showed you the tackle now, you’d be like ‘Get up’. It doesn’t even look that bad.
“After the game it was sore. But when I was on the coach, I was like, ‘Nah, I need something here, doc’.
“And then I went to walk off the coach back into the training ground at City and I genuinely could not walk, honestly. I had to get crutches and stuff. It was the worst pain ever.”

Former Aston Villa star Grealish was on crutches for the next few days but then struggled to bend his leg, meaning doing normal cardiovascular training such as on the exercise bike was a non-starter for 3½ weeks.
It explains why he still does not feel fully fit now, though he is pain free, and considers what few minutes he has played since picking up the injury to have contributed to effectively a “mini pre-season”.
The winger had never experienced consecutive league defeats at City until now and that wobble has doubters questioning whether Guardiola’s side still have the same hunger after last term’s historic triumph.
With seemingly no worlds left to conquer, Grealish — who was in the side knocked out of the League Cup by Newcastle last month — did hint that it has had a psychological impact.
He said: “I am not saying it is hard to get motivated . . .  you can’t say that. But when you’ve done it, it’s kind of like, ‘What now?’
“It would have been nice to do something that we have never done. Maybe win all four — put the Carabao Cup in there as well — but we are out of the Carabao Cup already.
Grealish has been called up for action by England ahead of Euro 2024Credit: Getty
“Then it was maybe trying to  do an Invincible season but we got beaten by Wolves, so we can’t do that either.
“It’s different. I have never been off the back of a season like the one I had.”
City are only two points off shock  league leaders Tottenham, despite their recent losses, and usually start slowly.
And yet back-to-back defeats are so rare for a Guardiola team that some may consider it a crisis of sorts.
Yet when that word was put to Grealish, he hit back: “Come on! No chance.
“Obviously I’ve never lost two games in a row for City before. But it’s nowhere near a crisis.
Man City have suffered a poor run of results recently but Grealish remains confidentCredit: Getty
“We had a brilliant start to the season. We didn’t win the Community Shield but then we won the Super Cup. We then won six in a row and we’ve obviously lost the last two.
“Rodri has been a big miss for us. There’s no doubt about that.
“For me, I come (to England) this week and I’ve tried to do little bits of extra fitness after training, just to try and help myself get back to full fitness.
“I feel like when I am fit, I can help any team in the world, whether that be here at England or at City.
“As soon as I go back to City, I need to get myself back in that  starting XI because towards the end of last season, I was playing every single game so that’s how I want it to be.”
Man City star Grealish is no stranger to rough injuriesCredit: Getty
A run-out against the Aussies and then Italy on Tuesday would help speed up his comeback.
England will be facing the Azzurri at Wembley next week for the first time since losing Euro 2020 on penalties there.
Grealish usually remembers all his games well but says that one remains a bit of a blur to him.
And at next summer’s Euros in Germany, he — and the likes of Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham and Marcus Rashford — are out to make up for that heartbreaking defeat by bringing home the trophy.

He added: “We just have so much talent, without putting too much pressure on ourselves, this is one we are really looking at to go into and try and win the tournament.
“Imagine how amazing it would be for the country? It would be un- believable. We do feel this is our time.” More

Kalvin Phillips offered shock escape route from Man City hell with European giants to reunite him with England star

KALVIN PHILLIPS could be offered a shock escape route from Manchester City by Bayern Munich. The England ace has seen his hopes of earning regular football under Pep Guardiola take a significant knock in recent weeks.

He was barely used by the Etihad boss despite a suspension to midfield lynchpin Rodri — and a move away in January looks likely.
Bayern are understood to be closely monitoring his situation with a view to making a move either in the January window or in the summer.
He is one of the names on the list of chief Thomas Tuchel — as he looks to strengthen his midfield.
The German giants raided City last winter and took Portuguese full-back Joao Cancelo on loan.

And a similar arrangement for Phillips, 27, could well appeal to all parties.
City told the £42million ex-Leeds man in the summer they would be willing to let him out on loan but he chose to fight for his place with the Treble winners.
Three Lions skipper Harry Kane is already at the Allianz Arena and would welcome the arrival of another Englishman.
Kane joined Bayern in a £104m transfer from Tottenham in August.

Chelsea’s Cole Palmer reveals struggles with London life and WASHING MACHINES and why he chose Chelsea over Man City

THE bright lights of London have left Mancunian native Cole Palmer dazed – not to mention his attempts at working a washing machine. But the 21-year-old has lofty ambitions for himself as Chelsea’s latest English poster boy, and believes his last-gasp move from Manchester City has already been vindicated.

Palmer will lead the England U21s out as captain at Nottingham Forest’s City Ground tonight ahead of their Euros qualifier against Serbia.
It comes just three months after starring for Lee Carsley’s side in a dramatic U21 Euros final win over Spain out in Georgia, followed by a Deadline Day £42.5m departure from his beloved, boyhood City in search of regular first team football.
As a result, Carsley believes Palmer has developed a much more serious side on the pitch because he is now an “asset and commodity”.
But as he sits and chats in the bowels of England’s HQ at St George’s Park, it is clear that off the pitch, Palmer still has some more growing up to do.

Asked about joining Mauricio Pochettino’s Blues, Palmer explained: “I was in a hotel for a couple of weeks and then I moved and got my own place.
“It is new and difficult. I don’t know how do to do most things on my own so I’m learning.“Cooking, finding my way around London and even using a washing machine. Mum was doing my washing at home.
“Dad came down the first couple of days to get stuff ready for the apartment but they’re still in Manchester. [Chelsea] have sorted me a cook.

“London is different to Manchester, in terms of how big it is, and off the pitch doing stuff on my own, it’s difficult.”

That boyish uncertainty vanishes as he begins to speak of what he expects to accomplish at Chelsea, regardless of the outside misconceptions, lack of experience in the squad and a poor start to the Premier League campaign that sees them 11th with three wins from eight.
Poch has started Palmer in Chelsea’s last three games in all competitions and has been rewarded for his trust with two assists and a goal from his young star – the latter from the penalty spot against Burnley in the Prem.
Palmer said: “[Starting so well] has surprised me a bit but I know my own abilities. I knew if I hit the ground running I’d have a chance and make an impact. That’s why I went there. “I always had that mindset at City but it’s a lot more difficult. I want to take penalties. I’ve got the confidence to, but City have Erling Haaland, many players.
Palmer left City for Chelsea to earn more first team opportunitiesCredit: Getty
“The opportunity that Chelsea offered me in terms of the project was good. There’s more responsibility but that’s why you play and get bought for big money.”He added: “We want to win trophies. Most people are going to give you criticism no matter what you do any way, but don’t get me wrong, we do need to win more games.
“They just see the outside point of view, but everyone is so young to the project, we just need to get Chelsea back to where they were. We have to go out with no fear.” More

“We have our own specific way to play and [he] sometimes struggles in a few things, while the previous [Leeds playing style] was perfect [for him].”

He has featured in a further seven minutes in the Champions League, while he started City’s 1-0 League Cup defeat at Newcastle.
Phillips, 27, snubbed a potential summer move away from City to fight for his place.
But he has so far been unable to hold down a regular spot.
Guardiola added: “The club spoke with him because he did not have many minutes. He said ‘no, I want to stay’.

The incident was sparked by Walker’s furious snubbing over Jover’s offer of a post-match handshake, which the set-piece specialist didn’t bite his tongue over.
An angry Walker took umbrage with something the German-born Frenchman said and decided to square up to him, with Erling Haaland backing him up.

A minor scuffle ensued as members of both teams intervened but cooler heads eventually prevailed, although Walker was still the picture of anger as he trudged off the pitch.
Haaland also had to be held back before eventually being led down the tunnel.

FA chiefs have decided NOT to take any action against Walker over the incident.
Gunners boss Mikel Arteta said he “didn’t see” what sparked the incident, which City chief Pep Guardiola refused to be drawn on.
