But a quick one-two before the break from goalscorers John Stones and Julian Alvarez meant City went into half-time at the Japan National team stadium in Tokyo level.
A second-half substitute appearance from Erling Haaland put the game beyond any doubt as he struck twice in the second half to ensure City enjoyed a comfortable victory.
Fans were amused after the game when Haaland was presented with a comically large cheque for his man of the match performance.
The one million Yen reward equated to £5,525, pocket change compared to Haaland’s £400,000-a-week wages.

Grealish played 45 minutes as he and the rest of City’s internationals look to get minutes in the legs ahead of their upcoming season.
The winger made sure to make the most of City’s time off after winning the Treble last season, and led the team in their celebrations.

The City players partied for four consecutive days following their Champions League victory in Istanbul – taking in the nightlife in Istanbul, Ibiza and Manchester.
Grealish then joined up with the England squad for their 7-0 thrashing of North Macedonia in European Championship qualifying.

Man City could be lining up with a revamped XI next season, with the likes of Kyle Walker and Riyad Mahrez linked with moves away from the Etihad.
Bayern Munich remain keen on Walker, although Pep has admitted he would like the full-back to stay.
Meanwhile Riyad Mahrez appears to be close to joining Saudi side Al-Ahli, with Michael Olise lined up as a replacement. More

The star striker led City to a 5-3 win over Yokohama F. Marinos in Japan with a brace.
After full-time, the Norway international was presented with a giant cheque of ¥1million (Yen) – which works out in the region of £5,525.
The 23-year-old earns around £400,000-per-week after tax at the Etihad.
That means it would take the City star just two hours to earn that sum with the Treble winners.

Fans quickly noticed that hilarious detail and took to social media claiming the Norwegian might not even be bothered to cash that cheque in.
One fan tweeted: “It takes about 3 hours for him to earn this money bro these are pennies for him.”
Another commented: “Imagine they did a giant cheque for MOTM in the Prem for 5 grand… he earns that in an hour.”
A third posted: “If you’re on £400 a week would you be happy with £5 for being man of the match on a Sunday?”

This fan said: “That’s just pocket change for him.”
And that one stated: “Haaland won 1 million yen for being MOTM today, which is 5 thousand USD.
“He makes like 400,000 per week, that’s chump change for him.”
However, Haaland still received a better award compared to some other MOTM rewards.
Other footballers were handed some absolutely ridiculous prizes, from a live chicken to a Burger King crown and mobile phone data. More

According to Foot Mercato, agent Jorge Mendes is actively trying to secure a move for Silva.
Among the interested parties are said to be the French champions, PSG.
The report adds the Ligue 1 club have already made several offers to City for the five-time Premier League winner who joined the club in 2017 and has made more than 300 appearances.
However, with no deal struck, they are also allegedly exploring the chance to secure a player swap.

Verratti would be a quality addition into the midfield, especially following Ilkay Gundogan’s departure and the failure to land Declan Rice – although City have landed Mateo Kovacic from Chelsea.
Kimpembe – a former Chelsea target – does have a World Cup winner’s medal but would not be a significant improvement on Ruben Dias, John Stones, Nathan Ake, Aymeric Laporte or Manuel Akanji.
PSG have already brought in midfielders Marco Asensio, Manuel Ugarte, Lee Kang-in and teenager Cher Ndour.
Hugo Ekitike, Milan Skriniar and Lucas Hernandez also joined the reigning French champions.
