Many locals have witnessed the transformation of the area thanks to the construction of the 55,000 seater stadium and nearby sports campus over recent decades.
But after Manchester City Council recently approved plans for a £300m expansion of Manchester City’s stadium, locals on the Grey Mare estate claim they are being left behind.
Plans to refurbish and improve the old Grey Mere estates have been hit by a series of snags and financial set backs.
Now locals are saying they have had enough and want out.One resident who has lived on the estate for 50 years told the Manchester Evening News: “I used to feel really good about living here.”But since all this, it’s just a s*** tip – and it’s right by the stadium where thousands of people come.”I’ve lived here since I was five – this is the first time I’ve thought I’d like to move.”
A masterplan drawn up in 2021 suggested demolishing 124 maisonettes, flats and houses and building 290 new homes but this too has been put on hold – with many properties now remaining boarded up.
Glenda O’Hanlon said the paused redevelopment plans left the estate looking like an unfinished “jigsaw puzzle”.
Manchester Central’s Labour MP Lucy Powell said she was “very concerned and disappointed” by a lack of progress redeveloping the estate.
She said: “I feel that the current leadership of One Manchester aren’t up to that task of delivering a big scheme like that.
    Most read in Football
“They’ve let residents down in the process and some of the work that’s been carried out has not been carried out to the standard we’d expect.”
One Manchester manages the social housing on the estate and planned to retrofit properties to improve their energy efficiency, but the scheme has stalled.
One Manchester admitted residents had “understandable frustrations” but blamed an absence of “appropriate government-backed funding”.
The firm said they were working with the city council “to make improvements for both our customers and the wider estate over the coming months”.
A spokesperson added: “We will also look to collaborate on further investment proposals with MCC in the future.”
Manchester council’s executive member for housing and development Gavin White said: “The proposals to invest in and regenerate the Grey Mare Lane estate remain a priority for the council.
“We reassured local people at a meeting last week that the planned works would continue as promised.
“This includes delivering new homes which will complement the previous investment in this community, including new schools and leisure centre.”
The £300m scheme to expand city’s stadium received the green light from town planners in July.

The proposal would see an extra 7,900 seats added to the north stand, increasing the stadium capacity to 61,958, as well as a a nine storey, 391-bedroom hotel and a new eight storey building constructed.
Building work is set to start later this year. The scheme is expected to be delivered by late 2026.

Fuming Wolves fire parting shot at Matheus Nunes and slam his decision to go on strike after he joins Man City

WOLVES fired a parting blast at Manchester City bound midfielder Matheus Nunes and told their record £53million departure: We’re better off without you.The Brazilian could have left with the best wishes of the Molineux club after Wolves raked in a club record fee for the 25-year-old – including 10 per cent of any future sell-on profit City might make on him.

However Nunes’ controversial decision to down tools and take strike action to try and force Wolves’ hand in the final week of the transfer window has left a sour taste at his former club.
And Pep Guardiola’s new arrival can expect a frosty reception when he returns to Molineux later this month with City.
Wolves’ Sporting director Matt Hobbs admitted:  “I was disappointed with how it ended, it wasn’t necessary the stance Matheus took.
“We ended with a good resolution for everyone.
    Read More in Football
“Matheus is a hugely talented player but would admit that last season he didn’t hit the heights he expected, but it was a tough season for the team, so maybe he wasn’t allowed to do that.”
Privately Wolves are seething that Nunes felt the need to put a gun to their head by refusing to train, after they backed him and invested a club record fee to land him.
They paid Sporting an initial £38million plus £4.2million in add-ons to give the Brazilian his big break in the Premier League and a chance to impress.
However, despite scoring Wolves’ Goal of the Season in April with a scorching volley against Chelsea last season, it was the only time Nunes found the net in 41 appearances.

Now, Wolves have banked a rapid £10million-plus-profit and leveraged a cut-price deal to land City midfielder Tommy Doyle on loan with an option to buy for a bargain £5million – around £10million less than might have been expected.
Hobbs claims that bit of business has left Wolves stronger without Nunes.
He said: “We’ve lost a player with a lot of potential, a lot of ability, but the situation has led to us bringing a greater number of players in to improve the squad and provide competition in the group.
“The players here want competition in training, so while we’ve lost a good player, it’s made us a more competitive and better squad overall.” More

And, including add-ons, the Palmer deal means they have now surpassed the £1billion mark since Boehly took over last year.
The 21-year-old, who looks set to become the latest addition to Mauricio Pochettino’s squad, won the age group Euros with England in the summer.
According to The Times, Chelsea have reached an agreement with City for the Wythenshawe-born player.
They go on to state the Blues are “close” to completing the signing.

Palmer scored the opening goal in Man City’s Community Shield defeat to Arsenal earlier this month, before he also netted in their Super Cup win over Sevilla.
But he has managed just ten minutes of action in their first three Premier League games – with that cameo coming off the bench in a 3-0 victory over Burnley.
Palmer has registered six goals and two assists in 41 games for Man City.
He featured 25 times for Pep Guardiola’s Treble winners last season.

However, just seven of those came as a starter as he has been forced to play a bit-part role in City’s successes.
Brighton saw a £30m bid for Palmer rejected.
Earlier in the window, Guardiola spoke about the young attacker, saying: “I don’t know [if he will stay]. When we arrived I had the opinion that he wanted to leave but now I don’t know.
“I don’t think a loan is going to happen. He’s going to stay or he’s going to be sold.”
The move will mean Pochettino has further bolstered his attacking options following injuries to Christopher Nkunku and Carney Chukwuemeka.
Boehly has already splashed the cash on several signings this summer including Moises Caicedo, Romeo Lavia, Axel Disasi, Nicolas Jackson, Robert Sanchez and Lesley Ugochukwu.
Chelsea have also been linked with a move for Arsenal’s Emile Smith Rowe. More

The caption, which was originally written in Potuguese said: “My brother! May God bless you a lot, thank you for all the moments of partnership since I arrived! I love you brother!”
Nunes joined Wolves last summer from Sporting CP for a club record £38million fee.
But it looks like his time in the Midlands will be short-lived, with Manchester City edging closer to signing the midfielder.
City had an initial £47m bid rejected last week but look set to return with an improved offer to secure their man.
    READ MORE IN FOOTBALL
Pep Guardiola has long-admired Nunes, and City were linked with a move last summer before Wolves stole a march.
In February Pep expressed his admiration for the player, saying: “Matheus Nunes is one of the best players in the world today.”
Nunes arrived at Wolves after helping Sporting to their first Portuguese title in 19 years, where he excelled alongside the now Fulham midfielder Joao Palhinha.
Palhinha was crucial to Nunes’ success as he acted as a stopper and allowed Nunes to carry the ball from deep.

At Wolves, he arrived to a midfield that contained Ruben Neves and Joao Moutinho, both of them playmakers similar to Nunes and as such struggled to settle.
He scored a fine goal against Chelsea in April which was nominated for Premier League goal of the season but that remains his sole goal in the old gold colours of Wolves.
Nunes has played under four different managers at Wolves, and all have attempted to re-jig his position to get the best out of his talents that are clear for all to see.
Pep clearly thinks he has a solution, and the midfielder could certainly excel in a midfield alongside the talents of Rodri and Kovacic – which is stylistically much more similar to the one he played in at Sporting. More
