Lionel Messi contract talks ‘progressing adequately’, claims Barcelona president in transfer blow to Man City

BARCELONA president Joan Laporta is ‘convinced’ Lionel Messi will extend his contract, with talks ‘progressing adequately’. The Argentine has two months left on his current Nou Camp deal, with Manchester City and PSG among those monitoring his situation.

But after Laporta was appointed Barca’s new president in March, he vowed to persuade Messi to commit his future to the club.
And the Spanish lawyer believes he is on track to keeping his word.
Laporta told Deportes Cuatro: “Everything is progressing adequately.
“I will do everything within the club’s capabilities to get him to stay. That’s what we’re doing. Messi is motivated.
“He is an extraordinary person and I am convinced that he will want to continue at Barca.”
Messi, 33, stunned his boyhood club last summer after he handed in a transfer request to leave.
The forward tried to activate a clause in his contract with permitted him to quit on a free transfer at the end of the season.
But Barca bosses argued it expired in June, two months before the request to go.

To avoid a drawn out legal battle, Messi remained at Barca and has since 23 goals in 28 matches.
New leadership under Laporta has sparked hope among the Nou Camp faithful that their hero will reconsider leaving.
Inter Milan have also been linked with the LaLiga legend, but City and PSG are best placed to match his wages, worth a reported £123million per year with all the bonuses included.

Pep Guardiola has no problem with Aguero joining rivals with Chelsea & Man Utd interested – ‘wants the best’ for legend

Chelsea are tipped to make a move while Tottenham, Manchester United and even today’s opponents Leeds have also been linked.
And City boss Guardiola said he wants the Argentine to be happy and is not worried about him coming back to haunt his club.
The Spaniard said: “I want the best for him, all of us do. Find the best for Sergio for the last years in his career, for sure.
“We’ll be delighted with the decision he takes, the best for him and his family and career.
“My preference is his preference. His preference is my preference. The best for him is the best for all of us.”
City have struggled to get Aguero fit this season. He has played only 15 times in all competitions, scoring just three goals.
It was a theme that continued when he started at Leicester last week.
Guardiola added: “That game was so difficult because they defended so deep and so tight. For the strikers it was not easy.

“But he moved well and helped us. He felt something in his leg and was substituted but he is doing better.
“Everyone must be ready and hopefully Sergio can be ready quickly.

“I understand him, I know him and I understand he needs time to get into his best condition.”

Erling Haaland transfer boost for Chelsea, Liverpool and Man City as Dortmund’s Champions League hopes hit by loss

ERLING HAALAND’S future at Borussia Dortmund was put further in doubt on Saturday as his side fell further behind in pursuit of a Champions League place.Eintracht Frankfurt struck three minutes from time to hand Dortmund a tenth Bundesliga defeat of the season, going down 2-1 at home.
Haaland was left frustrated as his side were beaten again on SaturdayCredit: AP
The result leaves Haaland and co seven points adrift of Frankfurt, who occupy the all-important fourth Champions League qualification place.
Dortmund’s domestic struggles have arisen despite Haaland’s truly sensational campaign.
The Norwegian has scored 33 goals in 32 games so far this season, 21 of which have come in the Bundesliga.
The best route now for Dortmund to get into the Champions League next season may well be to win the competition.
The German side have progressed through to the last eight but face the ominous task of taking on Pep Guardiola’s ruthless Manchester City side.
Dortmund have not reached the last four of Europe’s premier competition since they made it to the final in 2013 when they were beaten by Bayern Munich.
Meanwhile, speculation surrounding Haaland continues to rumble on.
And those rumours around the 20-year-old’s future took another twist this week as his father Alf-Inge and agent Mino Raiola travelled to Spain to meet both Barcelona and Real Madrid.

A number of Premier League clubs are also being linked with Haaland.
Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool have all been touted as possible destinations for him at the end of the season and it was reported Raiola met with the English sides on Friday.
But the German club have set their price at £135million, with Haaland’s release clause of £65m not coming into play until next summer.

Guardiola fears Man City will be priced out of £135m Haaland transfer and admits ‘big chance’ Aguero is NOT replaced

PEP GUARDIOLA fears Manchester City will be priced out of a big money replacement for Sergio Aguero this summer. The club’s all-time leading goalscorer was told earlier this week that his ten-year stay at the Etihad will end when the season finishes.
Aguero has spent a sensational decade with Manchester CityCredit: PA
And City have been linked with Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Haaland, Tottenham’s Harry Kane and Inter Milan’s Romelu Lukaku.
They are also keeping tabs on Lionel Messi’s situation at Barcelona as his contract winds down without a new one agreed.
But with the German club placing a £135 million price tag on Haaland and Tottenham looking for more than that for Kane, nothing is going to come cheaply.
Guardiola admitted the figures being bandied around make such deals ‘impossible’ in the current financial climate.
The City boss said: “There are a lot, a lot, a lot of big, big chances that maybe we are not going to sign a striker for next season with the situation world economics as they are.
“We have enough players in the first team and interesting players in the academy.
“With these prices, it’s impossible – we cannot afford it. It’s not going to happen.
“All the clubs struggle financially and we are not an exception.”

Due to injuries to Aguero and Gabriel Jesus, City have found a way to win without forwards this season, although Ferran Torres has filled in there.
Guardiola added: “We have Gabriel, Ferran, players in the academy and we’ve played with false 9. I don’t know what will happen.
“Maybe we will not buy one. Today there is more chance we will not buy one.”
Whether the new player comes from within the club or from outside it, Guardiola admits it will be difficult for anyone to replace Aguero.
He said: “I want to be clear, maybe we are going to find a new player to replace him but in terms of numbers impossible. In terms of what he means, impossible.”
One of the players who could step up is young forward Liam Delap – son of former Stoke man Rory – who got a taste of first team action earlier this season.
He has been linked with a surprise move to Real Madrid during the international break, but Pep insists he will stay at the Etihad.
Guardiola said: “He’s training with us and next season he’ll be with us – training every day.”

Erling Haaland’s agent set to fly to England TODAY for transfer talks with Chelsea, City and Liverpool – but NOT Man Utd

ERLING HAALAND’S agent Mino Raiola is set to fly to England TODAY for transfer talks with Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool but NOT Manchester United. The super agent was spotted flying into Barcelona and Madrid alongside the player’s father Alfe-Inge Haaland on Thursday to hold talks with the El Clasico sides.

Super agent Mino Raiola was papped arriving at an airport in Barcelona
Haaland’s dad Alf-Inge accompanied the super agent on the trip
And it was reported that a further three interested teams were due to begin negotiations around a potential deal for Borussia Dortmund’s prized asset.
The Mail reports Raiola and Haaland senior will arrive in England to hold talks with multiple Premier League giants.
Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool are expected to welcome the pair but SunSport understands United will not meet with Haaland’s agent, who also represents Paul Pogba.
However, the Red Devils are waiting in the wings and keeping tabs on his situation.
The Norwegian has a £65million release clause in his Dortmund contract but it cannot be activated until the end of next season.
And after bagging an incredible 33 goals in just 31 games in all competitions this season – many clubs are not prepared to wait for a chance to secure his services.
The 20-year-old has become arguably the hottest property in world football and Dortmund will demand around £150m for him this summer.
But the Bundesliga side are reluctant to sell their star man with Dortmund’s sporting director Michael Zorc revealing he has told Raiola they are planning for the long-term future with Haaland in mind.

Man Utd’s biggest transfers ever, both in and out, including Ronaldo

On Thuesday, Zorc told Sky Germany: “I spoke to Raiola yesterday (Wednesday). We made our intention clear.
“We plan for the long term with Erling. [Rumours] do not have to be dealt with at all. I can see him with us for a long time.”
Manchester City have been installed by many as Haaland’s most likely destination after dad Alf-Inge played for Citizens from 2000 to 2003.
But Pep Guardiola dashed hopes of a mega money move – which SunSport revealed could cost a total of £300m – to replace the departing Sergio Aguero.
In his Friday press conference, the Spanish boss said: “With these prices we will not buy any striker. It’s impossible. We will not afford it. All the clubs struggle. We are not an exception.
“I don’t know what is going to happen. Today, there is more chance we will not buy a striker next season.”
Chelsea have been linked with Haaland and Aguero but Thomas Tuchel remained coy when talking about players at other clubs.

The unbeaten German boss said: “Same answer as for Haaland. We have full respect for Man City.
“There is no words needed, he’s a world-class player. But we have three competitions in which we are in with City so I won’t speak about their players.”
United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer worked with compatriot Haaland at Molde but insisted it is up to the youngster to make his own mind up about where he heads next.
He said: “Even though I worked with Erling it’s not right for me as Manchester United manager to talk about Erling, he will make his own mind up.
“I’m focusing on the next two months and whatever happens in the world of football there is only so many places anyone can go to and I just, focus on the ones who are here.”
Haaland only joined Dortmund from RB Salzburg in January 2020 but with 49 goals in as many games he has certainly caught the eye of Europe’s top sides.

Romelu Lukaku ‘available for £102m’ as Chelsea, Man City and Barcelona eye transfer for Inter Milan star

INTER MILAN value Romelu Lukaku at £102million, with Barcelona considering him as an alternative to Erling Haaland, reports say. Lukaku, who arrived from Manchester United for £73million in 2019, has scored 19 goals in 26 league games this season, as Inter top Serie A.

Corriere dello Sport says Romelu Lukaku is valued at £102m
But behind the scenes, the club are battling financial losses, which could force the them into transfer sales in the summer.
According to Corriere dello Sport, Lukaku has been handed a £102m price tag, should he be sold.
Feloow forward Lautaro Martinez, 23, is another with an uncertain future, as Inter look to balance their books.
Barca, Chelsea, and Manchester City have all been linked with Lukaku and Borussia Dortmund star Haaland.
But Lukaku, 27, is a far more affordable options, with Haaland, 20, valued at £150m.
The Norwegian’s release clause in 2022 allows him to leave for only £65m, but it does not guarantee he will stay.
If Barca – also facing debts of £1BILLION – cannot afford Haaland this summer or miss out, Lukaku is their second choice.
Current manager Ronald Koeman worked with the Belgian at Everton, and would like to bring him to the Nou Camp, Mundo Deportivo report.

City are also on the hunt for a new striker, following the news club legend Sergio Aguero, 32, will leave at the end of the season.
And Chelsea – where Lukaku was signed to from 2011–2014 – are also rumoured to be looking for another goal scorer.
But Italian press suggest Lukaku would opt against moving back to the Premier League.
It comes following speculation Haaland is also favouring Barca or Real Madrid over England’s elite.

Man City’s worst Premier League signings ever, including Jerome Boateng, Jack Rodwell and Eliaquim Mangala

MANCHESTER CITY have invested over £1BILLION in the transfer market over the past decade so, naturally, there are going to be some flops.
For every David Silva and Yaya Toure, there’s an Eliaquim Mangala or Jack Rodwell.

Three great signings out of four ain’t badCredit: EPA

Fortunately for current boss Pep Guardiola, most of the club’s most useless transfers came before the Spaniard brought them continued success.
Here, SunSport details the five WORST signings City have made in the Premier League era….
    Eliaquim Mangala – £42m (2014)

    Credit: AFP or licensors
Mangala was strongly criticised by the media during his time at CityJoleon Lescott left the Etihad Stadium after Manuel Pellegrini’s side won the title and Mangala was heralded as a ready-made replacement.
The defender’s first two seasons saw the club drift away from the top of the table and he was often hammered for poor positioning and slow reactions.

A solid loan spell at Valencia earned Mangala momentary reprieve under Guardiola but, after 15 appearances, the new boss binned him off before serious injury struck in a 2018 spell with Everton.
    Jack Rodwell – £12m (2012)

    Credit: News Group Newspapers Ltd
Injuries curtailed Rodwell’s progressRodwell was an up-and-coming star at Everton but became a symbol of City’s trigger-happy stockpiling when jumping ship at the age of 21.
There was a problem, however: City already had an excellent set of central midfielders.
Battling past Yaya Toure, James Milner, David Silva, Samir Nasri, Javi Garcia, Gareth Barry and Fernandinho was too much for Rodwell and he left after two years and just 25 appearances.

    Jerome Boateng – £10m (2010)
It is painful enough seeing a former player go on to great things but City didn’t even get close to utilising Boateng’s full potential.
Perhaps player and club were doomed from day one, the German tearing a tendon in his knee the week before the season began and aggravating it when a drinks trolley bashed it on a flight.
A year later, Boateng asked to head back home and was allowed to leave for Bayern Munich – going on to win a World Cup, a Champions League and seven Bundesliga titles.
    Jo – £19m (2008)

    Credit: Reuters
Jo arrived with a great record for CSKA MoscowA top striker in Russia when snapped up by Mark Hughes, Jo struggled to say the least – scoring once in nine league outings before being moved on six months into his stay.
A brief upturn in form at Goodison Park gave the Citizens some hope of turning a profit… but a dismal 2009-10 season on Merseyside dropped him back at City.
Failing to take another chance the following season, Jo finally left to return to Brazil, having cost much more than Vincent Kompany and Pablo Zabaleta combined.
    Wilfried Bony – £25m (2015)

    Credit: Getty Images – Getty
Bony was sent back to Swansea in 2016 but couldn’t find form there, eitherTen goals in 46 games, only six of which came in the league, is a poor record for any striker, but for an expensive forward at a club aiming to win the title? Terrible.
The Prem top scorer for the calendar year of 2014, Bony initially couldn’t play for City due to African Cup of Nations duty and a summer bout of malaria came after a quiet start.
That stunted his hopes for the following year and the club learned their lesson, from then on turning their attention away from signing top players from smaller sides.

Lionel Messi’s dad Jorge ‘will fly to Barcelona for showdown talks over son’s future’ amid Man City transfer links

LIONEL MESSI’S dad Jorge will fly to Barcelona for showdown talks about his son’s future, reports say.
New club president Joan Laporta has vowed to keep Messi at the club, following the Argentine’s bombshell transfer request last summer.

According to journalist Maximiliano Grillo, Messi’s father and representative Jorge is now due for talks with Laporta on Monday.
It is claimed he will fly from Argentina to Barca to discuss Messi potentially renewing his contract, which expires at the end of the season.
SunSport revealed the 33-year-old wants proof that the LaLiga giants have the funds to bolster their squad in the transfer market.
Messi tried to leave his boyhood side after 16 years at start of the season, but stayed to avoid a drawn out court battle.

Still, former manager Pep Guardiola at Man City and PSG are waiting in the wings for a potential free transfer.
Laporta is yet to come forward with an offer to Messi, because he still has not got the financial package in place to restructure debts that experts believe have spiralled to more than £1BILLION.
The Messi camp know all too well the financial problems the club are in.
It leaves them demanding clear proof from Laporta that he can deliver on his promises before he entertains the prospect of staying.

He has made it clear he still wants to be competing for — and winning — trophies in the final years of his glittering career.
As a result, Messi will only commit to a project which gives him the best opportunity to do that.
It is on this basis that City and PSG hope to be able to demonstrate they are in a better position than Barca to match his sporting ambitions.
