How Man City will line up with Lionel Messi: Five ways star fits into Pep Guardiola’s system amid £623m transfer talk

MANCHESTER CITY could pull off one of the most incredible signings of all time if they land Lionel Messi.
The Barcelona great, 33, is on the verge of an astonishing exit from the club he joined almost 20 years ago.

Messi’s dad Jorge met with Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu on Wednesday for showdown talks where he reportedly told the club chief: “My son isn’t staying.”
But Messi Sr did offer a suggestion there was still a possibility of the Barca captain remaining at the Nou Camp.
He simply replied to reporters: “Yes.”
When asked how the meeting with Bartomeu went, he added: “Very good.”

However, should Messi Jr get his way and force an exit, the Etihad side are in pole position to land the Argentine – with reports of a £623million offer on the table for him.
The five-year deal would make Messi the highest-paid individual in the history of the sport – equating to £14,200 an hour, £341,000 per day, £2.4m every week and a whopping £10.4m per month.
So should City sign the six-time Ballon d’Or winner, Pep Guardiola will have to work out the best way to fit him into his system… or fit his system around the icon.
And the Spaniard has plenty of star talent already at his disposal…

    3

This could be a familiar sight for Manchester City fans next season with Messi lining up in the sky blue at the Etihad

    3

    4-3-3 (Messi out wide)
The most likely option (above) could see a standard back five of Ederson in goal, Kyle Walker, summer-signing Nathan Ake, Aymeric Laporte and Benjamin Mendy.
Rodri may sit at the base of the midfield with Kevin De Bruyne and Phil Foden pushing on and a devastating front three of Messi on the right, Sergio Aguero through the middle and Raheem Sterling on the left.
That would allow Messi to operate in the role he has caused so much damage from over the years, especially since Luis Suarez’s arrival at the Nou Camp.
    4-3-3 (Messi up front)

A similar option for Guardiola that would allow him to keep his favoured 4-3-3 formation could see Messi played as the central striker – or the false No9 as he mastered under his former boss at Barca.
That would mean Aguero dropped out and Riyad Mahrez takes the right-wing spot while Fernandinho could be brought in for Rodri in midfield.
    4-4-2

A slightly rogue option – maybe one for the Carabao Cup – could see City line up in a 4-4-2 formation.
A changed-up defence may give a chance for Joao Cancelo, John Stones, Nicolas Otamendi – or Eric Garcia – and Oleksandr Zinchenko.
Mahrez and Sterling offer pace on the wings while De Bruyne or Foden and Rodri can operate in midfield together.
That would free up Argentina team-mates Messi and Aguero to start together as a front two causing any centre-back pairing nightmares.
    4-2-3-1

With a return to the regular back four, De Bruyne and Ilkay Gundogan may get the nod to operate as a two in midfield together.
Even with Leroy Sane sold to Bayern Munich, there are plenty of other options out wide with Bernardo Silva and new-boy Ferran Torres brought into the side.
Aguero’s understudy Gabriel Jesus could lead the line and allow Messi to operate in the No10 role pulling the strings with plenty of pace around him.
    3-5-2

Should Guardiola want to really shake things up with a back three, he certainly has the tools at his disposal to do so.
There are plenty of options for the three centre-backs, including Fernandinho who slotted in with ease throughout last season.
Walker and Mendy are the perfect wing-backs in the modern game and either Gundogan or Rodri could be the most defensive of the midfielders.
De Bruyne and Messi – just like David Silva for many years – would be pretty unstoppable linking up in between the lines while Sterling could move centrally to partner Aguero up front.

Lionel Messi transfer fee to Man City could be just £88.8m with Barcelona star set for more talks with dad Jorge today

LIONEL MESSI could be available for just £88MILLION as he gets set for further talks with his father and agent Jorge over his Barcelona future.
The football world was stunned when the 33-year-old slapped in a transfer request with the Catalans.

Now, The Telegraph is reporting that potential suitors, with Manchester City the favourites, could bag the little magician for just £88m.
Messi’s team are using Cristiano Ronaldo’s move for the same price from Real Madrid to Juventus in the summer of 2018 as the “benchmark”.
They also believe Barca finances being hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic means fees cannot be over-inflated.

Messi’s father Jorge, who is also his agent, flew in for a crisis meeting with Barca president Josep Maria Bartomeu on Wednesday.

Talks lasted 90 minutes and the two sides are still poles apart.
The Argentine, 33, wants to join Manchester City and Messi Sr yesterday claimed: “It is difficult for Leo to stay.”
Messi no longer considers himself a Barcelona player after faxing a transfer request last month.
But the Nou Camp club insist he is still under contract and on strike after refusing to train.

A £623million buyout clause in his contract is a huge stumbling block to any move.
He is now locked in dispute with the Spanish giants after claiming that a release clause in his contract allows him to quit for nothing with immediate effect.
Nou Camp officials believe the stipulation expired on June 10, with the Argentine superstar under contract until the summer of 2021.
And LaLiga have backed the Catalan giants, insisting Messi’s €700millon (£629m) buy-out clause is still valid.
    CITY DEAL DONE?
The fallout from the transfer saga has led to Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu facing calls from fans to step down.
News coming out of Spain on Wednesday night reported that Messi had agreed financial terms on a five-year contract worth a total of €700m (£623m) with Manchester City.
According to Record Sport, the incredible deal would make the Argentina captain the highest-paid individual in the history of the sport.
It equates to £14,200 an hour, £341,000 per day, £2.4m every week and a whopping £10.4m per month.
Messi is set to spend three seasons at the Etihad before joining City Football Group’s (CFG) Major League Soccer side New York City FC for two years.

Man Utd in Koulibaly transfer boost as Napoli reject City’s £53m offer and hold out on £71m for defender

MANCHESTER UNITED were handed a transfer boost with the news Napoli reportedly rejected Manchester City’s £53million offer for Kalidou Koulibaly.
Corriere dello Sport reports the Italian side did not consider City’s bid sufficient for their highly-rated central defender and will hold out for around £71m.

And the report states Pep Guardiola’s side are not prepared to dig further into their pockets for the 29-year-old.
The Citizens may be limited on the cash they can splash on Koulibaly with a sensational £623m contract for Argentine superstar Lionel Messi in the works.
But it is great news for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as he looks for a long-term partner for headline-grabbing Harry Maguire.
However, United will face competition from Champions League runners-up Paris Saint-Germain who are also poised to swoop.

The French champs need to replace veteran Brazilian Thiago Silva after he moved to Frank Lampard’s Chelsea on a free transfer.
The Red Devils could see the likes of Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo and Chris Smalling leave the club in this window and are looking for reinforcements at the back.
The club are unconvinced Swede Victor Lindelof is the perfect partner for £85m Maguire.
And they have been linked with RB Leipzig star Dayot Upamecano.

Harry Maguire played more minutes than any other footballer in the world in 2019-20

But it is likely they will find it difficult to snare the 21-year-old this summer after he signed a contract extension until 2023.
And Leipzig trolled United on Twitter with a not-so-subtle reminder about the French ace’s decision to extend his time with them in the Bundesliga.
However, Upamecano’s new deal has a release clause in the region of £40million that comes into force next summer and could spark a bidding war.

Man City ‘to hand Lionel Messi two-year contract with chief Txiki Begiristain already in Barcelona thrashing out deal’

LIONEL MESSI will reportedly be handed a two-year deal by Manchester City as they look to strike a deal with Barcelona.
The Premier League team are favourites to sign the 33-year-old, with Barca presidential candidate Toni Freixa admitting he is likely to move to the Etihad.

Messi handed in a transfer request at the Nou Camp after the club were humiliated by Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

It was claimed on Monday that City were ready to offer Messi £450million across five years.
But Cadena Ser have stated that the four-time Premier League champions will instead give Messi a two-year contract.
Though they add that City would be open to extending the Argentinian’s stay at the club.

The Spanish news outlet has also revealed that City director of football Txiki Begiristain is in Barcelona trying to thrash out a deal to bring Messi to England.
Messi failed to report for coronavirus testing in Barcelona on Sunday and didn’t turn up for training on Monday.
As a result, he is facing a suspension and £1.1m fine after missing the start of their pre-season preparations.

Kalidou Koulibaly ‘agrees personal terms with Man City’ amid £70m transfer talks from Napoli

MANCHESTER CITY have reportedly agreed personal terms with Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly.
But the Premier League side are yet to convince Napoli to send the Senegalese star to Eastlands.

Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United have competed with City for Koulibaly’s signature in recent summers.
With the former having snapped up Thiago Silva and Malang Sarr, and the latter two looking elsewhere, the path may be clear for the Citizens to swoop.
According to France Football, City director of football Txiki Begiristain has recently held negotiations with the centre-back’s representatives.

A breakthrough has been made to agree personal terms with Koulibaly.

It is thought the 29-year-old, who is on around £175,000 a week, could see his salary doubled, with his image rights bumped up too.
The next step for City is to begin talks with Napoli over a transfer fee.
Partenopei club president Aurelio de Laurentiis has asserted that he will hold out for a mega offer for his star players, with Koulibaly unlikely to cause a commotion if denied the move.
Reports suggest the fee will be in the region of £70million.

De Laurentiis recently responded to a question on Koulibaly’s future, replying: “You should ask Manchester United, City or PSG this question.
“In other words, those who can afford to pay certain amounts.
“I see many hawks on the transfers market.
“You know who they are, they seem to be waiting to swoop in, but we have impenetrable armour and they won’t get what they want or at the prices they want.” More

Man City ‘to pay Lionel Messi record £450m over five years with £225m BONUS as dad Jorge prepares to meet Barcelona’

MANCHESTER City are ready to offer Lionel Messi an incredible £450million over five years if he leaves Barcelona, reports claims.
The 33-year-old – who has one year left on his contract at the Nou Camp – expressed his desire to depart Catalonia after the club were humiliated by Bayern Munich.

And the Citizens are believed to be in pole position to sign the Argentinian international, where he’d be reunited with Pep Guardiola.

Speculation regarding his future intensified over the weekend after Messi snubbed coronavirus testing in Barcelona.
There has even been talk that Messi has spoke to Guardiola where he told him he believes he can win two Ballon d’Or titles at the Etihad.
And now Italian journalist Tancredi Palmeri has claimed that City are ready to pay Messi £450million over five years.

He even suggested that the club would pay him a £225m bonus after three years in England, where he would then join sister club New York City.
Palmeri didn’t state how much City would pay Barca in order to secure his services.
He tweeted: “Boom. Manchester City would pay Messi €500m (£446m) net for 5 years!
“The salary would be €50m (£44.6m) per season, but after 3 years at the City there would be a €250m (£223m) bonus moving the last two years to New York City!”

Palmeri also told his 203,000 followers that Messi’s father Jorge will meet with Barca chief Josep Maria Bartomeu this week to discuss his future.

He said: “Barcelona president Bartomeu and Messi’s father to meet on Wednesday.”
Messi had been hoping to leave the club on a free transfer this summer due to a clause in his contract, but LaLiga have dismissed his claim, keeping his £630m release clause intact.
Spanish media have stated that City are lining up an £89.5m bid for Messi, while also offering Barca Bernardo Silva, Gabriel Jesus and Eric Garcia.

Messi’s pal Aguero bans wantaway Barcelona star’s name from live chat after being mobbed by fans wanting transfer news

MANCHESTER CITY striker Sergio Aguero was forced to BAN Lionel Messi’s name being mentioned in a gaming forum.
The 32-year-old is close friends with the wantaway Barcelona star, with the pair linking up for the Argentina national team.

And with his club City the favourites to sign arguably the greatest player of all time, fans were desperate to question Aguero.
But after logging into Twitch for a live stream, Aguero refused to mention his mate’s name .
He decided to mute the words ‘Messi’, ‘Leo’ and ‘GOAT’ from the live video.

Aguero has over two million followers on Twitch after setting up his own channel.

But this time he just wanted to play the game Fall Guys and not discuss football’s hottest topic.
In July Messi told Aguero to “stop messing around” in an amazing live-stream telling off.
Aguero was recovering at home after having knee surgery and was on Twitch when he should have been seeing a physio.
Messi knew this and messaged Aguero, who read the text out live on air.

Aguero said: “Stop messing around and go see the physio.”
The Etihad star then went onto explain that he was still booked in for treatment and that it was the physio who was running late.
City fans are convinced they will sign Messi after Aguero reportedly removed the No10 from his Instagram handle.
City’s star striker has apparently given up the number on his social media profile, indicating that Messi – who also wears the No10 shirt – could be on his way to the Etihad.
City are favourites to sign Messi after he told Barcelona he wants to leave using a controversial free transfer clause in his contract.
But LaLiga have sided with Barca and say Messi’s contract is still valid.
Reports claim Messi’s father is already in Manchester negotiating the transfer.
And Guardiola’s assistant fuelled speculation further by posting a picture of Messi to social media along with the caption: “It’s time to help you be happy.”

Lionel Messi ‘expected to complete Man City transfer by senior Barcelona figures’ with Martinez eyed as replacement

BARCELONA are already preparing for life without Lionel Messi, according to reports.
The football world was stunned after the six-time Ballon d’Or winner slapped in a transfer request last week.

Messi has cut a forlorn figure at times this season, and the 8-2 thrashing at the hands of Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter-finals proved to be the final straw.
Manchester City, Inter Milan and Paris Saint-Germain are the favourites to pull off the sensational transfer.
And now, according to The Telegraph, “key individuals at the Catalan club believe City’s pursuit of Messi may well prove successful”.

But Barca are planning ahead, and have reportedly identified Inter Milan striker Lautaro Martinez as the man to replace him.

Messi has dropped another hint that his Barca exit is cut and dried after he snubbed coronavirus testing at the club.
According to Spanish newspaper Marca, this means he will not be available for pre-season training at the Nou Camp.
The Argentine believes he is now a free agent after handing in a transfer request last week.
But Barca insist he has one year left on his deal as he didn’t notify them of his decision soon enough.

Messi has grown disillusioned with things behind the scenes in Catalonia.
He has suffered with tax issues and problems with the Spanish government.
Messi also publicly criticised ex-sporting director Eric Abidal in February.
He was unhappy the club were pushing out his pal Luis Suarez.
Now Messi, 33, has told Barca chiefs he will not attend coronavirus testing today as he forces through his move.
He could pick up a staggering £72m a year in wages at the Etihad.
City could offer Spanish centre-back Eric Garcia and left-back Angelinho, plus cash to get Messi in a deal which could be worth around £250m.
