Arsenal could hit ONE HUNDRED points, says Pep Guardiola, as Man City boss claims Gunners have ADVANTAGE in title race

PEP GUARDIOLA has cranked up the title mind games by claiming his Manchester City side are at a disadvantage as expectations are higher for them. The City boss also insists Prem leaders Arsenal could hit 100 points and bitter rivals Manchester United are  in the title race, too.

Champions City can cut the Gunners’ lead to  five points by beating Chelsea at Stamford Bridge tonight.
And Guardiola said: “The advantage of Arsenal and Manchester United right now is nobody has to win the Premier League and be 20 points ahead in November like Man City has to.
“And this is sometimes a big problem. Maybe it’s an advantage for the fact Arsenal haven’t won the Premier League for . . . I don’t know how many years.
“But when you play them, the smell of their history has to be there.”

Guardiola believes that if Arsenal,  who last won the Prem in 2004 with their Invincibles, continue to gather points at this rate then it will be impossible to live with them.
Mikel Arteta’s Gunners have won 14 of their 17 Prem games, losing only once and notching a whopping 44 points.
Guardiola said: “Arsenal have an average that means they are going to do 100 — or more than 100  points.  If they continue that way, we will not catch them.
“So we have to be almost perfect from here until the end of the season and hope that they drop a little bit, their performance.

“Against Newcastle they were excellent again but we will see what happens.”
City want to lift a  fifth Prem title in six seasons and Guardiola added: “What I want to see is us fighting, don’t give up, not now, not until the last chance is gone, until the last drop of water.
“The moment we are not able to win the Premier League, we have to be ready to compete next season.” More

Real Madrid rumoured to be keen on Manchester City ace Hayley Raso according to reports

It is claimed the club, who are currently third in the women’s top-flight in Spain, are looking to create a more competitive squad to strengthen their push to win silverware.
And it is thought the club have identified Raso as a potential target with her current City contract reportedly set to expire this summer.
Speculation comes six months on from Madrid, signing former City forward Caroline Weir.
The Scotland star has netted seven goals in 15 top tier and Champions League appearances this term.

Marca say Madrid have nine players in their senior squad whose contracts are due to expire at the end of June.
They include 30-year-old forward Esther Gonzalez who notched up 14 goals in 27 top-flight appearances last season.
And Marca claim Real, who knocked the Citizens out of the Champions League earlier this season, could look to swoop for the Raso in the summer.
Last term Raso, who won the 2017 NWSL Championship with former club Portland Thorns, made 13 WSL appearances for Gareth Taylor’s side.

However the versatile forward, who won league titles in Australia with Brisbane Roar and Canberra United, has so far played in seven top-flight games for City this season.
And the WSL ace has come off the bench as a substitute in six of those games.
Raso has netted nine times in 20 WSL appearances for City since her August 2021 move from Everton.

The forward, who began her senior playing career at Australian side Canberra United, joined the club on a two-year deal.
Since her move Raso helped City, who are fourth and play West Ham in the WSL on January 15, to a league cup trophy win last March.
And her 89th minute equaliser helped the club take last year’s FA Cup final into extra time before they were beaten 3-2 by Chelsea at Wembley.  More

It comes at a time when his existing deal is due to expire in the summer.
However, according to The Mail, Arsenal have now taken the option to extend his deal by a further 12 months, doing so before the clause expired at the end of December.
And a new long-term contract could be secured sooner rather than later following reports last month that Saka is set to renew talks with Arsenal.
Since breaking through into the first team in 2018, Saka has established himself as a regular in the Gunners’ forward line.

He has contributed 30 goals and 35 assists in 153 appearances for the club.
And his sublime displays have seen him become a trusted lieutenant for England manager Gareth Southgate – already racking up 24 caps.
He netted three times at the Qatar World Cup and was one of the Three Lions’ standout performers.
Upon returning to Arsenal, he has scored in both of their games since the domestic season resumed – with Mikel Arteta’s men beating West Ham and Brighton.

Man City 1 Everton 1: Arsenal given late Christmas present as Demarai Gray strike dents Pep Guardiola’s title hopes

PEP GUARDIOLA said he would allow his players a glass of champagne on New Year’s Eve to mark the end of another successful year.Yet the bubbly may have tasted a little flat for the Manchester City players.

For the second successive home league game – albeit seven weeks apart – they have dropped crucial points at their fortress Etihad.
And it means they have it all to do if 2023 is to see yet another Prem title end up here.
This was a ‘Gray’ day for the champions in every sense.
Under typical leaden skies in Manchester, Guardiola’s men were dragged into a scrap by the determined Toffees.

And a stunning goal from Demarai Gray just after the hour mark meant yet another Erling Haaland goal was not enough.
Toffees boss Frank Lampard is often jokingly referred to as City ‘legend’ by their fans after spending one season on loan here under Manuel Pellegrini.
However he returned to his old stamping ground in desperate need of a lift after three straight league defeats for his team.
Nobody who had seen City’s return since the World Cup would have backed them to get much either.

Guardiola said he had been convinced by those games that his team are hungry for another Prem title.
World Cup winner Julian Alvarez – named on the bench after landing back in Manchester on Friday – and was almost called into action straight away.
Haaland down inside first minute after clash with Godfrey and needed extensive treatment – but was fine to carry on.
However it wouldn’t be the last we would hear of that physical match-up.
Everton were determined to make it difficult – but the champions still had chances to go ahead.
A Kevin de Bruyne cross was just too high for Haaland as James Tarkowski got up well to nick it off him.
The Belgian’s pass then sent Haaland racing clear and he went round Pickford but the angle was too tight – even for him – and he fired into the side-netting.
A sign that the frustration that was building for the home side came when Bernardo Silva was booked for going down too easily under a challenge from Nathan Patterson.
Guardiola’s men trail Arsenal by four pointsCredit: AFP
But the mood lifted in the 24th minute as Jack Grealish worked the ball out to Riyad Mahrez who beat his man and laid the ball back for Haaland.
His shot on the turn was not his cleanest and would surely have been stopped by Connor Coady  on the line but for a touch by Pickford.
The last player to score as many as 21 league goals in a season for City was a certain Sergio Aguero seven years ago.
Haaland has managed it comfortably before the halfway mark in the campaign.
Much of the rest of the half was niggly with referee Andy Madley kept busy.
Haaland was clearly getting wound up – as he felt he was getting nothing in his on-going battle with Ben Godfrey.
Shortly before half-time, he raised his hands to the sky after winning a free-kick on the right hand side as if to say ‘finally’.
From the resulting set-piece, De Bruyne’s delivery was perfect for John Stones but his diving header smacked against the outside of the post.

Haaland chased Vitaliy Mykolenko over to the far touchline and his flying challenge was a little too over-zealous for the ref who issued a yellow card.
Tempers were threatening to boil over although Haaland and the Ukrainian had a hug in the tunnel as they left the pitch at half-time.
Soon after the re-start, the players had a lengthy delay as the assistant referee had some problems with his headset.
Six minutes later we were back under way but those with parties to attend in the evening must have been starting to worry about the number of stoppages.
Yet it suited the visitors to stop City getting into their rhythm and just after the hour mark they got a surprise leveller.
Rodri had been receiving lengthy treatment and his mis-placed pass was cut out by Idrissa Gueye who found Gray.
The rest of it was all about the former Leicester man who seemed to have run down a blind alley out of options at one point.
But then he cut inside and curled a right-footed beauty over Ederson and into the top corner.
Gray’s goal pushes Everton slightly away from the relegation zoneCredit: AFP
Guardiola would not have been impressed that his defenders failed to get a meaningful challenge in – but even so, it was some strike.
Everton knew a point would be huge for them and looked to protect what they had.
A huge scramble saw Mahrez get his shot away but it was far from clean and Pickford was able to make a full-stretch save.

Guardiola threw on Phil Foden and Alvarez to try to snatch the win and there were 11 minutes of stoppage time for them to do it.
Yet Everton dug deep to take their point and showed they are still firmly behind their manager.

The midfielder has attracted interest from the likes of Wolves, Benfica and the Magpies.
But according to the Daily Mail, City have started negotiations over a £6.5million transfer.
And should he complete an Etihad switch, Perrone would follow in the footsteps of compatriot Julian Alvarez by moving directly from Argentina to the Premier League champions.
Perrone only made his senior debut in March but made 33 appearances in the 2022 season across all competitions, grabbing three goals.

His contract at his boyhood club expires at the end of 2023 – with European sides keen to swoop to secure the budget deal.
Perrone is expected to stay with his current side until the end of the Under-20 South American Championship which runs from January 19 to February 12.
Manager Javier Mascherano looks set to include the Velez Sarsfield youngster in his squad despite just one U20 cap to his name.
However, Perrone did make seven appearances for the U16s in 2019.

Should he feature at the tournament in Colombia, the star is unlikely to want to secure a transfer to Europe in the January transfer window.
That means a deal may well be agreed but he may not link up with his new team-mates until pre-season in the summer, similar to the Alvarez deal this year.
City confirmed the £17m transfer from River Plate in January but loaned the striker back to the Argentine side for the first half of 2022.

Grealish could have added to that tally in City’s 3-1 win over Leeds on Wednesday night after going clean through on goal in the 51st minute but squared the ball for Erling Haaland to tap home.
And his lack of killer instinct is somewhat of a concern for Guardiola, who said: “Grealish made two assists, he allowed us to give an extra pass when he had it.
“With Riyad [Mahrez] and Jack the tempo was better.
“But he has to be more ambitious, he has to score more goals and be competitive because he has the quality to do it.”
