Jamie Carragher says Erling Haaland ‘picked the wrong club’ as he slams Man City and reveals their major weakness

JAMIE CARRAGHER has suggested that Erling Haaland might have signed for the WRONG club. The superstar arrived at Manchester City for £51m last summer and has enjoyed a prolific first season on the goal front.

Haaland has already scored 25 goals in the Premier League with another six in other comps making him the most lethal marksman in Europe.
He’s struck a remarkable FOUR hat-tricks and is well on course to smash Mohamed Salah’s record of 32 in a 38-game season.
But Haaland has been criticised for his all-round play with some saying that he’s potentially made Manchester City worse.
Pep Guardiola’s side trail leaders Arsenal by five points in the race for the title after failing to close the gap following a 1-0 defeat at Tottenham.

Haaland struggled and even failed to register a single shot on target in North London.
His performance was once again the topic of conversation and Carragher even made the bold claim that he perhaps shouldn’t have joined City.
Speaking on Sky Sports, the ex-Liverpool defender said: “He may have actually picked the wrong club to actually get the best out of him.
“Manchester City, as a team, have scored the same amount of goals.
    Most read in Football
“He’s scored 25 Premier League goals, but Manchester City as a team have scored the same amount of goals and they’ve conceded more and it’s far easier to counter-attack them as well.
“So they’re a different team and a lesser team with Erling Haaland in the team and it’s not his fault.
“Manchester City as a team will not play end to end football, it’s not Pep Guardiola’s way.
“Erling Haaland has still scored 25 goals, but we’re not seeing the full package of what this player can do because of the team that he’s gone to.

“I’m not criticising him and I think he’s that he’s so good he’s still scored 25 goals, but we’ve probably only seen 60 or 70 per cent of him.
“We’re not seeing that power and that blistering pace, but we’ve got to come back to the fact that no matter how many goals he’s scored as an individual, Manchester City have scored exactly the same number of goals.” More

Joao Cancelo gets second assist in two games for Bayern Munich to show Pep what he’s missing as Man City lose to Spurs

MANCHESTER CITY outcast Joao Cancelo grabbed his second assist in as many matches for Bayern Munich on Sunday. The defender, 28, joined the German club on loan for the rest of the season after falling out with Pep Guardiola.

The pair were reportedly involved in a training ground bust-up after Cancelo found out he was dropped for the club’s FA Cup clash against Arsenal.
This came as Guardiola tweaked his system after questioning his players’ hunger to win the Premier League again.
With Cancelo’s and the City boss’ relationship becoming strained, the club took the bold decision to allow Cancelo to leave on loan.
However, the Portuguese star started his new venture in stunning fashion with an assist in the DFB cup win over Mainz in midweek.

And he produced a brilliant cross this afternoon for Kingsley Coman to outrageously volley home in the 4-2 victory over Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga.
French forward Coman scored two inside the first 14 minutes before Thomas Muller headed in a third.
Jakub Kaminski pulled a goal back and then Bayern were reduced to ten men when Joshua Kimmich was sent off in the 54th minute.
But Jamal Musiala grabbed a fourth before Mattias Svanberg netted a late consolation.

As Cancelo was starting for his new team, his old side suffered a huge blow in the title race as Harry Kane’s record-breaking goal sealed Tottenham a 1-0 win over City.

That left the Cityzens still trailing Premier League leaders Arsenal by five points.
Meanwhile Bayern are now a point ahead of second-placed Union Berlin in the German top-flight. More

Gary Neville slams Man City for bizarre tactic during Tottenham defeat as Pep Guardiola suffers huge title blow

GARY NEVILLE was dumbfounded by Manchester City’s tactics in a costly 1-0 defeat at Tottenham.Pep Guardiola’s misfiring champs remain five points behind leaders Arsenal, who have a game in hand.

And Manchester United legend Neville was amazed at the poor service for goal machine Erling Haaland.
The star summer buy had netted 25 times in 19 Premier League games – but in his 20th match on Sunday he failed to have a single shot for the first time.
Passer-in-chief Kevin de Bruyne was left on the bench until the 59th minute.
And even though City were behind from Harry Kane’s historic strike on the quarter-hour mark, Guardiola’s men couldn’t even break through after Cristian Romero’s late red card.

Neville told Sky Sports: “Haaland is making the runs. He is ready to go, they (City players) are just not playing them.
“The amount of runs he makes that get ignored is incredible.”
Fellow pundits Graeme Souness and Micah Richards agreed.
Former Liverpool hardman Souness said: “Haaland and De Bruyne are the most successful partnership in the Premier League.”

And ex-City defender Richards said: “In fairness to Haaland he’s making SO many runs and no one is seeing him.”
Guardiola tried out a new look, with Julian Alvarez partnering Haaland.
Behind them midfielders Rodri and Bernardo Silva were flanked by Riyad Mahrez and Jack Grealish.

But City struggled against Spurs’ stubborn defending and pacy counter-attacks.
And Kane’s drilled winner took him to a Tottenham record of 267 goals, passing fellow England great Jimmy Greaves.

Tottenham 1 Man City 0: Spurs do bitter rivals Arsenal HUGE favour as record-breaker Kane dents City titles hopes

IT’S a funny old game, as the second highest goalscorer in Tottenham’s history often used to note. Eighteen months ago, Harry Kane was begging for a transfer to Manchester City, yet here he was overhauling the great Jimmy Greaves as the most productive filler of onion bags this famous old club has ever known.

And it was funny that the England captain should score his landmark 267th Tottenham goal against Pep Guardiola’s City.
And funny, if you’re not a Spurs fan, that his goal might play a part in handing the Premier title to Arsenal.
Still, this was a mighty achievement for Kane. These historic records do not fall with great regularity in age where there are so few long-serving players.
Kane is a throwback. Even his failed escape attempt was charmingly naive.

“How are we going to force this move then?”
“Let’s do an interview with Gary Neville while playing a round of golf, that should do the trick.”
It didn’t work, of course, and City didn’t force the issue after an initial bid was rejected because they were confident of landing Erling Haaland 12 months later anyway.
Kane’s strike was also his 200th Premier League goal, he stands only eight behind Wayne Rooney in second place on that list.

Although for those who remember football existed before the Premier League, Greaves’ record of 357 English top-flight goals looks out of sight even to the 29-year-old Kane.
The most extraordinary thing about Kane is that he is a very long way from being a mere goal poacher.
Increasingly, his assist count and his ability to drop deep and influence play has been as impressive as his scoring.
Less than a minute after Kane had side-footed past Ederson to hand Spurs a 15th-minute lead, and the big screens read ‘Congratulations Harry – 267’ – Kane barged Bernardo Silva off the ball to win possession and earned another massive roar.
There is still some debate about whether the Greaves record should have read 268 rather than 266, as he scored twice in a Charity Shield and nobody has ever known whether that fixture is competitive or a friendly.
Kane, of course, has never played in the annual match between the champions and the FA Cup holders because Spurs haven’t won either competition since he was born.
He will surely pass that slightly higher figure, even if this does turn out to be his final season in a lillywhite shirt.
Kane wanted to join City to win silverware. Instead, he has so far had to settle for individual accolades – Golden Boots at the World Cup and in the Premier League as well as the capture of Greaves’ record.

This result – finished off with ten men after the late sending off of Cristian Romero – increased Tottenham’s chances of Champions League football next season, as City’s hoodoo at the new White Hart Lane continued.
Remarkably, Guardiola’s men have lost five out of five here, without scoring a single goal.
Arsenal’s defeat at Everton on Saturday means City remain just five points behind the leaders with a trip to the Emirates coming up on Wednesday week.
But Guardiola’s famously hyperactive mind seems especially restless right now. His ‘Pep roulette’ routine was in full flow with Kevin De Bruyne benched for the opening hour – and it cost City.
Antonio Conte was not here to witness Kane’s historic moment. The Spurs boss remains in Italy, recovering from an operation to remove his gallbladder.
But Tottenham didn’t seem to miss his frenetic touchline cheerleading. Under the charge of Conte’s assistant, Cristian Stellini, they were absolutely
Kane’s moment arrived when Rodri produced an unusually sloppy pass on the edge of his own area, aimed at full-back Rico Lewis.
Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg pounced to rob the kid and thread a pass through, which Kane slotted into the far corner and spark jubilation.

Kane was never likely to rest on his and his challenge on Bernardo instantly proved as much.
Haaland’s most notable moment came when he was cleaned out by Cristian Romero, Tottenham’s gloriously old-school Argentinian centre-half.
City dominated possession, Jack Grealish bent a shot wide and Riyad Mahrez twanged the crossbar with a firecracker.
But City only really imposed themselves once Guardiola decided he might be an idea to bring on his best player, De Bruyne, on the hour.
Soon the Belgian was feeding Grealish for a shot deflected over by Eric Dier, and then Alvarez, whose rising shot went narrowly wide.
At the other end, though, Kane was threatening a second. He slid in at the back post but couldn’t quite connect with a low Ivan Perisic centre, then he dragged a shot wide, before he ploughed through two defenders and was denied by an onrushing Ederson blocking with his body.

Romero chopped down Grealish for his second yellow card in the 87th minute but Spurs held firm.
Kane may never win a trophy with this club but his place in the pantheon of Tottenham greats is always assured.

Manchester City ace Rico Lewis now makes £25,000 per week
The right-back also made history by becoming the Citizens’ youngest ever Champions League scorer with a goal in the 3-1 victory over Sevilla during his full debut in the competition.
City are set to reward the England Under-19 international with a bumper new deal that will see him earn £25,000 per week.
That means the defender will be bagging an approximate £1,300,000 per year.
Lewis, who has been on £5,000 per week, will now be making more than fellow young star Cole Palmer, who is the senior squad’s lowest earner with £20,000 per week.

Of course, the full-back is miles off City’s highest earners with the likes of Erling Haaland and Kevin de Bruyne bagging more in just one afternoon.
Haaland – the second highest earner – makes £19,500,000 per year, which means he pockets over £53,000 per day.
And top earner De Bruyne, who is on £20,800,000 per year, earns almost £57,000 per day.

How Conte and Kane can get revenge over Guardiola and Haaland as Tottenham take on Man City in key tactics battles

TWO weeks after one of the most thrilling matches of the season, Tottenham and Man City meet again this weekend. Two teams who are currently going through very different situations will face each other.
The league’s top strikers go head to head
While Pep Guardiola’s side are in second place and looking to stay in contention for the title, Antonio Conte’s men are fifth and focused on qualifying for the Champions League.
As in their last meeting, a fairly intense and competitive match is expected.
Due to the positive form that keeps Arsenal at the top of the Premier League, Guardiola knows very well that he must get victories in difficult games and this is one of them.
Therefore, he will be looking to keep his team’s spirits high, especially after the win over Mikel Arteta’s side in the FA Cup, by getting the three points in this one.

Tottenham will have a very important absence, but off the pitch.
Antonio Conte will be out for a few matchdays after undergoing emergency surgery.
The exact number of games the Italian coach will miss is not yet known.
With the last match between these teams in mind, we decided to analyse four tactical areas that could make the difference this weekend in London.

    City’s build-up vs Tottenham’s pressing
Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City won the last game against Spurs in a thrilling 4-2 victory.
However, as the Spanish manager let it be known, he didn’t like a lot of things about his team, who went into half-time 2-0 down.
Many of these were evident on the pitch.
“I don’t recognise my team. They (previously) had the passion and desire to run”, was one of the Spanish coach’s phrases that caused most impact during the week.
Man City lure the opposition into their box, and then as they press the ball, they switch play diagonally into midfield
Harry Kane has once again led the way for Spurs
Erling Haaland has been outstanding up front for Man City
Manchester City’s intention in the build-up phase is to lure the opposition into their box and then link up with players in free areas.
To do this, they have used Rico Lewis in the inside channels with the aim of attracting opponents higher, and then progressing by passing the ball to a player at the back of the opposing double pivot.
The accumulation of players in midfield is something Guardiola enjoys greatly and has been one of City’s main hallmarks this season.
However, in the last game against Tottenham, Guardiola’s side were not quite right in these moments.
In fact, after the first few minutes, Conte’s team changed their pressing and managed to win the ball back on several occasions.
The Spurs press, led by Harry Kane, were very accurate in their runs to not give time or space to their opponents.
Tottenham’s pressure was effective and led to Spurs scoring the first goal in the game in January
Tottenham’s pressure was effective and led to Spurs scoring the first goal in the reverse fixture.
For this reason, it will be very interesting to see what ideas Guardiola will have to counteract the defensive plans of a very intense opponent.
Unlike last week’s FA Cup match against Arsenal, where the team benefited from long passes and Haaland-Holding duels, Man City will not be able to use this resource as often.
However, they could look to link up with the wide players more often and then pass the ball to players on the inside behind the opposition’s press.
This brings us to the next potential key tactical decider.
    Gundogan’s role behind the pressure
Ilkay Gundogan is one of City’s brightest players.
This is something that is evident in the intelligence with which he moves as he manages to appear in free areas frequently.
Gundogan has found space to receive the ball in the gap between two Spurs midfielders
In the last match between the two clubs, many of City’s progressions were closely related to the German player’s ability to find space to receive the ball.
On the occasions when Man City did manage to get to players out wide in the first third of the pitch, they were able to link up with Rodri so that he was the one to connect with Gundogan behind the opposition pressure.
Man City star Rodri is looking to link with his partner Gudogan
The quicker City’s passing is, the more likely they are to get their captain between the lines.
This is a way through which the team can progress very often.
Another option is to pass to right back Rico Lewis when he moves inside
However, if Gundogan delays his position or is marked, City can use Rico Lewis on the inside as a “Plan B” to have a free man on the inside lanes.
The positional interchange is usually fluid and difficult for the opposing double pivot to defend.
    Kane-Rodri duel
The Kane-Rodri duel was one of the keys to the last match and will be something to watch out for in this game as well.
The Spurs striker is usually very mobile in midfield, as he often drops deep and uses link-up play to move his team forward.
To keep City’s centre-backs in their own zone, the man in charge of chasing Kane on many occasions was Rodri.
Although the Spanish player did a great job defensively in this match, Kane managed to get him out of his area on several occasions and had it occupied by one of Tottenham’s midfielders, allowing his team to progress in an indirect way.
Rodri was dominant against Tottenham in January
Bentancur receives the ball, which forces Rodri to move up the pitch to close him down
Harry Kane receiving with time and space will always be a source of advantage for Tottenham.
Therefore, it will be one of the situations their opponents will try to avoid throughout the match.
In this sense, it could be interesting to see how Rodrigo Bentancur is used in the match, as close to Rodri-Kane he could cause the Spanish midfielder to hesitate on occasion.
This movement can allow Kane to receive with freedom to orchestrate his team’s attacks.
Harry Kane only had four touches in the opposition penalty area v Man City
As he showed in his last game, Dejan Kulusevski can also appear on the inside on several occasions and create passing lanes.
He is also a player who could enter the “Rodri zone” to generate a 2v1 and allow his team to progress.
However, both City full-backs are very clever at going long distances when pressing high.
And this created several problems for Spurs in the last game.
    Problems with Spurs’ ball progression
Conte’s Tottenham also look to lure their opponents into the build-up phase and then progress quickly through vertical passes aimed at one of the team’s attacking players.
However, in the last game, City were able to control their intentions to progress very well.
Guardiola’s team blocked all kinds of chances from close range and “forced” the centre-backs into making the most difficult pass on several occasions.
Although this was Tottenham’s main idea, having their potential receivers very well defended prevented them from progressing numerous times.
Tottenham defender Romero is panicked into making a tough pass as City’s press does its job
Talent can sometimes come out on top. Kulusevski has plenty of quality to keep possession and link up quickly.
However, he should also use some long passes into space for Son to attack behind the City defensive line.
Lewis/Aké’s pressing runs are very intense, so drawing them in with one of the attacking players while another attacks the space in behind could be an interesting solution.
Man City’s organisation forces Spurs’ defence to make a risky pass
So what does this all mean?
Tottenham and Manchester City will have a tough test on Sunday.
Although both teams have different objectives this season, they need to win urgently.
    Read More on The Sun
Pep Guardiola’s side are aiming to reduce the number of points separating them and Arsenal but they will now face one of the teams that have made it more difficult for them in the last few seasons.
Losing this game could mean that Manchester City will not win the Premier League this year, so they will have to play with maximum concentration to get the victory in what will be a gruelling fixture for the champions. More
