Man Utd and Leeds ‘in Nicolas Nkoulou transfer battle’ as Solskjaer eyes defender to partner Harry Maguire next season

MANCHESTER UNITED and Leeds are keeping tabs on Torino star defender Nicolas Nkoulou ahead of the summer transfer window, according to reports.
According to Tuttosport, United and the Whites are among a raft of clubs interested in signing Nkoulou, whose contract with the Serie A outfit expires at the end of the season.

The centre-back has made a total of 128 appearances for the Turin-based club ever since his move from Lyon in 2017.
The former Cameroon international is reportedly keen on moving to another club in the summer but his focus currently lies on saving Torino from relegation, with the club just two points away from the drop zone.
United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is after an experienced defender that could partner up with Harry Maguire at centre-back.
The Red Devils have been struggling for results in recent weeks after picking up a mere two wins in six league matches.

United have also conceded 32 goals in 26 games, which is more than any other team in the Premier League’s top five.
Solskjaer seems determined to add some more quality to his backline and appears to have sent scouts to watch Nkoulou in action against Cagliari two weeks ago.
The Red Devils reportedly hold an advantage in the bidding war for the African ace as the player wishes to return to the Champions League.

Leeds have also expressed interest as manager Marcelo Bielsa is keen on a reunion with Nkoulou after working with him at Marseille.
Bielsa coached the 30-year-old for a year and turned him into one of the best defenders in Ligue 1.
Nkoulou had a strong bond with the Leeds boss and it showed when he openly supported him during his controversial exit from Marseille in 2015 when he resigned after the first game of the season.

The South Korean star also gained the adoration of the Old Trafford crowd, who dubbed him ‘Three-lung Park’ for his all-action displays.
And Park reckons his finest hour was against Chelsea in May 2011 – a 2-1 victory which virtually sealed United’s 18th top-flight title.
He said: “I believe it was my best in a United shirt – I was everywhere.
“I think it was after this game when fans started believing in what I gave the team.

“My performance that afternoon, especially in the first half, was incredible.”
In an interview with Four Four Two magazine, Park also reveals when then-United manager Sir Alex Ferguson spotted his talents.
It was in 2005 when PSV beat eventual finalists AC Milan 3-1 in the Champions League – but were knocked out on away goals.

The South Korean first came to the football world’s attention in the 2002 World Cup, when the joint-hosts reached the semi-finals.
Park’s favourite memory of the tournament came in a group-stage victory against Portugal.

What work has Marcus Rashford done for charity? Full list of Man Utd ace’s generous acts including school meals victory

MARCUS RASHFORD has inspired the entire nation by convincing the government to provide free school meals to poorer students during holidays.
And the Manchester United star has always been keen to get involved with charitable causes.

The United striker’s initiative encouraged people to wrap festive boxes full of household items

Rashford is known for his regular acts of charity

These are some of the charitable and kind acts the star has done in previous years.
    Helping the homeless
In October 2019, Rashford set up a Christmas campaign in order to support the biggest front-line services for young people experiencing homelessness.
He linked up with Selfridges to launch the campaign – teaming up to help some of the city’s biggest homeless shelters – Barnabus, Centrepoint and Lifeshare.
The idea was for members of the public to prepare shoeboxes filled with essential items including gloves, sanitary products, hats, deodorant, thermals, toothpaste and torches. People could then drop them to various Selfridges branches to be passed on.

He personally delivered 300 boxes to Centrepoint, and the homeless organisation took to Instagram to write of his generosity saying: “We believe that sport has the power to positively transform young lives.”
    Visiting Manchester bombing victims
After the horrific terrorist attack in 2017, Rashford joined Man Unied teammates in visiting the wounded, most of whom were children.
A total of 22 people were killed with a further 120 injured after suicide bomber blew himself up at the Ariana Grande concert at the Manchester Arena in May 2017.
He also attended the One Love Manchester concert that raised £2million for those affected by the devastating circumstances.

    Players Together Initiative
Back when the UK was in the beginning of lockdown, Rashford took to Instgram to show his support for the Players Together initiative supporting NHS staff during one of their toughest periods dealing with COVID-19.
He was among a myriad of Premier League footballers who donated in total of £4million to help the coronavirus efforts.
The cause supported NHS Charities Together (NHSCT), an umbrella organisation that supports 250 separate NHS charities across the UK.
The campaign was spearheaded by Rashford, Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson included Harry Kane, Harry Maguire, Virgil van Dijk, Raheem Sterling and Kevin De Bruyne.

FareShare are a charity that aim at relieving food poverty and reducing food waste.
Rashford teamed up with them in order to raise over £20million to provide children across Manchester with food if they got free school meals whilst they were still in school.
The initiative began in Greater Manchester but later expanded as part of a national initiative.

Rashford wrote an open letter to MPs, urging the government to reverse its decision to not give free school meal vouchers to 1.3 million children who are eligible for it.
The government initially refused to U-turn but Rashford’s persistence as well the support of MPs and other celebrities alike forced a change in policy.
The likes of Sir Keir Starmer, Piers Morgan and Gary Lineker were vocal in their support for the Man Utd and England star. More

Van de Beek showed he’s perfect for Man Utd’s midfield against Istanbul, it’s time for him to start in Premier League

DONNY VAN DE BEEK impressed again for Manchester United in the Champions League in midweek and Tom McDermott reckons now is the time to play him in the Premier League, starting at Southampton on Sunday…
United travel to Southampton in the Premier League on Sunday lunchtime.

Donny van de Beek impressed against Istanbul Basaksehir in the Champions League in midweek

And following the 4-1 home win in the Champions League against Istanbul Basaksehir on Tuesday evening, the one question on everyone’s lips is; will Ole Gunnar Solskjaer finally start Donny Van de Beek?
The Dutchman signed for United from Ajax in the summer for £40million, and showed his commitment by signing a five-year contract.
He’s been pictured most of the time, though, looking glum from the bench, and has had to watch on as his new side performed inconsistently.
One good showing was followed by another spell on the sidelines, and it left many people, including Dutch legend Marco van Basten, to question why he made the move to Old Trafford and not somewhere else.

There appears to be a complexity to van de Beek’s signing. Did Solskjaer really want him? Or, did he prefer Jack Grealish instead?
For some, the debate is now irrelevant.
Grealish has extended his stay with his boyhood club and looks settled, whereas United are now finally, starting to see van de Beek’s true worth.
And they’ll continue to do so IF he starts, but you wouldn’t be surprised to see him not in the starting XI at Southampton.

Van de Beek should start in a midfield three, alongside either Nemanja Matic or Fred at the base in front of the back four.
This would then allow Bruno Fernandes ahead of them, to continue causing problems in the opposition half.
Van de Beek is perfect in that role because of his technical ability and use of the ball.
When United start games with two of Scott McTominay, Fred and Matic, they become more predictable.
None of the three mentioned are as comfortable in possession as Van de Beek.
Which means if you’re lining up against United, you probably only have to concentrate on Fernandes as United’s main creative threat, and that’s when the predictability to their play creeps in, and we see these inconsistent runs.
Van de Beek’s inclusion in the starting XI really helps United in the transition from defence to attacking positions.
His natural instinct is to play the ball forward and because of that he knows exactly how to feed those in more advanced areas of the pitch.
Paul Pogba was missing from the side that beat Istanbul, and without wanting to sound like a broken record, I don’t think he should start for United again.
If Ed Woodward can move him on in January, it’s what the club should absolutely do. United need reliability and consistency in that position. Pogba doesn’t provide either.
In Van de Beek, Solskjaer has a younger alternative who is capable of filling more central midfield areas, to a higher standard.
Van de Beek, Pogba and Fernandes were never going to start at the same time, and if the plan was to ease Van de Beek in and sell Pogba next summer, then why wait?

Bruno Fernandes perfect for Man Utd ‘because he doesn’t care about mistakes and only success’, says Nani

BRUNO FERNANDES is the perfect fit at Manchester United because he ‘only thinks about success’.
That’s the opinion of former Red Devil Nani, who isn’t surprised the fans are ‘going crazy’ for the classy midfielder.

Fernandes has been a revelation for United since joining from Porto in a £55million deal in February.
The 26-year-old has scored nine goals in 13 appearances so far this season for the Premier League side.
But Nani, who says he urged Fernandes to sign for United, isn’t surprised.
⚽ Read our Man United live blog for the latest news from Old Trafford

The 34-year-old, who is now playing for Orlando City FC, told the United Review: “A big part of this team is Bruno Fernandes. Bruno now is a much better player than when we were playing together.
“He was doing great in Portugal but the Portuguese league is not the same as the Premier League.
“I saw so much potential in Bruno and I told him to go to England if he decided to move to another league.
“I said to him: ‘Your game will fit there and the fans will go crazy for you!’

“The style of his football is something fans appreciate. He is a player who likes to take risks in the game, who wants to take the responsibility of the game on his back and make difficult passes, dribbles and shots.

“He doesn’t care about mistakes; he only thinks about success and making the team have success. He knows what that takes. That’s Man United, isn’t it?
“Bruno has done so well until now, scoring goals and setting up a lot of goals, but he will keep improving and making the team even better.”
The Portuguese playmaker’s stunning impact at Manchester United was evident once again following more heroics in last night’s Champions League win over Basaksehir.
And SunSport has revealed how Fernandes has the most goals and assists of any Premier League player since his explosive arrival in February.
In that time, Fernandes has scored more goals (21) than any other Prem rival, and is joint top of the assists chart with Kevin de Bruyne on 13.
Harry Kane is one goal behind and has played 11 games fewer, while De Bruyne has also not been as busy as Fernandes.
But the stats show what a remarkable piece of business the 26-year-old was.
He has a total of 34 goals and assists since February 1 in all competitions, three more than Spurs leader Kane.

Man Utd star paul Paul Pogba urged to ‘move on’ by club legend Paul Ince amid Real Madrid transfer interest

MANCHESTER UNITED legend Paul Ince has told Paul Pogba to ‘move on’ just weeks after the midfielder admitted it is his ‘dream’ to play for Real Madrid.
Pogba was once again on the bench at the weekend as United played out a dull 0-0 draw at home to Chelsea.

Fred and Scott McTominay bagged the anchoring spots in the midfield, with Bruno Fernandes just in front.
Pogba did play some part in the game as he replaced veteran Juan Mata on 58 minutes.
But Ince believes the time has come for the 27-year-old Frenchman to leave Old Trafford.

Speaking to beIN Sports, Ince said: “For him to be sitting on the bench and watching, with no disrespect, McTominay and Fred playing in his position, I would be saying, ‘I must be doing something wrong if I can’t get in this team’.

“I know he has had an injury, and he might be trying to bring him on a little later on. But I think it is time to move on.
“He has come out in the last two weeks and said he wants to join Real Madrid.
“I think his performances, since he has been here, have been inconsistent.
“Paul Pogba is a world-class player, and when he moved to Old Trafford, I thought [it would be] great. But all he has done is been a problem.

“The fans have gone against him and now Bruno Fernandes has come in and shown what you need to do to be a Manchester United player.”
Days before the transfer deadline Pogba reiterated he ‘dreams of playing for Real Madrid one day’.
The Frenchman, however, did insist he is happy at Old Trafford for now.
He said: “Yes, all footballers would like to play for Real Madrid. Maybe it is a dream. It is a dream for me, why not one day?
“As I have said, I am at Manchester United and I like my club.”

Man Utd missed out on Dayot Upamecano transfer after row over just £200,000 for RB Leipzig star

MANCHESTER UNITED missed out on signing RB Leipzig star Dayot Upamecano — because of a row over just £200,000.
Germans Leipzig signed him for £9million in 2017.

Dayot Upamecano could have been playing for Man Utd but for a row over moneyCredit: EPA

And he is now worth around £55m and rated one of Europe’s best centre-halves.
But the French defender could have been playing FOR United in the Champions League this week, instead of facing them, if a fee had been agreed five years ago.
Upamecano was at Old Trafford with his mum and agent as a deal was lined up with then club Valenciennes — only to fall apart over a small sum of money.
The defender, 21, was just 16  when he arrived at United in the hope of sealing his dream deal to one of Europe’s giant clubs.

But instead, Upamecano and his party went away upset as United chiefs only offered £500,000 while the French club demanded  £700,000.
It was considered too much to pay for a player who was already in the France under-16 and U-17 teams and tipped for the top.
An insider in the deal said: “Dayot wanted to join United and the fee really was nothing.
“At first he got the red-carpet treatment but then they would not go that bit further with their offer and he was gone.”

Instead, RB Salzburg snapped him up just  two weeks later.
They paid the asking price and pledging extras.
Liverpool are strongly linked and, ironically, United have been looking again — only this time he will cost a lot more than £700,000.
