Chris Smalling nears £18m Roma transfer after missing Man Utd pre-season to finalise deal following stunning loan spell

ROMA are reportedly on the verge of signing Manchester United defender Chris Smalling on a permanent basis.
The centre-back, 30, has been absent from the Red Devils’ pre-season training this week while he finalises the move.

According to the Telegraph, a deal is now close and expected to be worth in the region of £18million.
Smalling has appeared at Carrington this month but is said to have not taken part in first-team sessions.
Speculation over his future has persisted all summer, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer talking up the player’s “value” to United.
Despite over 300 games for United and a tally of 31 caps for England, he was largely considered a spent force at the top-level when sent on loan to Roma a year ago.

In 37 appearances for the Serie A side, Smalling showed he still has plenty left in the tank and became affectionately known as ‘Smaldini’ in Italy.
A permanent stay in Rome has long been described as his preferred option.
However, the Giallorossi are hardly flushed with cash and have been hard at work negotiating down United’s valuation.
Aleksandar Kolarov was allowed to leave for Inter Milan this week and Alessandro Florenzi is nearing a loan-to-buy move to Paris-Saint Germain.

It had appeared that Smalling had a future in Manchester after Solskjaer spoke of his encouragement at the defender’s loan spell.
The manager stated: “I think Chris has shown over his Manchester United career how valuable he is at Manchester United.
“This season was about him being a regular and going to Roma and showing how good a centre-back he is, I wanted to give Harry [Maguire], Victor [Lindelof] and maybe Axel [Tuanzebe] a chance.
“It was best for him to go and play for a year in Roma and he has shown he will be valuable, I’ve been speaking to Chris throughout. I’ve been delighted with his season.”

Man Utd boss Solskjaer admits club don’t have ‘new millions’ as Dortmund hold firm over Jadon Sancho fee

OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER admits Manchester United do not have “new millions” as Borussia Dortmund stand firm over Jadon Sancho’s fee.
SunSport told you on September 2 that the England winger has already reached an agreement with United over wages.

It has now emerged the Red Devils have made some progress negotiating agent fees.
However, Solskaer’s side remain locked in talks with Dortmund over a transfer fee after having an initial bid of £70million – rising to £110m in bonuses – rejected.
United, who have only brought in £39m midfielder Donny van de Beek from Ajax this summer so far, have not given up on Sancho.
And after being quizzed by Radio Five Live whether he would be OK without any further additions, he appeared to warn the Bundesliga outfit his side will not be held to ransom over the 20-year-old.

Solskjaer said: “I am very happy working with these players and the squad.
“We always trying to improve and to see if there’s any way possible that we can improve this squad and bring players in that will have the right level of quality and the right personality and have all the right criteria.
“We all know this summer and this year has been a very strange one and it’s important that everyone understands that this has an effect on football and not everyone can spend millions and millions, and new millions.”
The Norwegian added: “It’s never easy to have too many new players in the team, it takes time for players to gel into units.

“We have seen some clubs go for the quick fix and get players in, some have trust in the process and the continuation of the process and the coaching.
“We will have to get the results, our response has to be about improving, getting the results but also adding players with different qualities than we have, things that we need.
“When we signed Bruno, we knew we needed that type of player. Now we have signed Donny and he is the type of player that I felt we needed.
“He is the type of person who will fit the culture, and the team and will improve us for next season and for years to come.”
United remain keen on signing a new centre-back, with RB Leipzig’s Dayot Upamecano in Solskjaer’s sights.
He would also like a left-back, with Real Madrid’s Sergio Reguilon eyed after an impressive loan at Sevilla.
United had been looking at Porto’s Alex Telles too, but it’s believed Wolves are closing in on a deal for the Brazilian.

Victor Osimhen snubbed Man Utd transfer as he ‘has too much respect for fellow Nigerian Ighalo to compete for his place’

VICTOR OSIMHEN reportedly rejected Manchester United before joining Napoli because of Odion Ighalo.
The 21-year-old forward moved to the Italians in a £54million move from Lille this summer.

But his brother, Andrew Osimhen, claims the Red Devils also wanted him but he had no interest because of his respect for his fellow Nigerian.
Andrew told Complete Sports: “It is very true that Manchester United wanted Victor but he told me something like he had too much respect for Odion Ighalo to be competing for shirts with his senior colleague.
“My brother holds Ighalo in high esteem and he just didn’t see himself going to Old Trafford to battle for a striking role with the highest goalscorer at the 2019 AFCON in Egypt.”
Osimhen has scored four goals in nine games for his country since his debut three years ago and featured alongside the ex-Watford man several times.

United were desperate for striking reinforcements back in January.
They managed to secure a last-minute deal before the deadline to bring in Ighalo, 31, on loan from Shanghai Shenhua.

That move has since been extended until January 2021 after the ace struck five times for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.
Osimhen was linked with both Tottenham and Liverpool before Napoli eventually clinched his signing.

He scored an eight-minute hat-trick during their recent pre-season friendly against L’Aquila.

Real Madrid ‘ready to accept cut-price £22m for Gareth Bale’ putting Man Utd and Tottenham on transfer alert

REAL MADRID are ready to let Gareth Bale leave for £22million, Spanish reports say.
The 31-year-old has grown increasingly frustrated in the Spanish capital, managing only 14 starts last season.

    1

Real Madrid are reportedly ready to let Gareth Bale leave for £22m
But according to Mundo Deportivo, manager Zinedine Zidane and the Bernabeu board are willing to let the Welshman leave.
And they will lower their asking price to £22m, having refused to pay off the remaining two years of his contract worth £30.2m.
Manchester United and Tottenham have both been linked with the forward in the past.
But Bale’s £600,000 a week wages have proved a stumbling block previously.

It is now understood the former Spurs winger is open to taking a pay cut if it means ending his Madrid misery.
United are in the market for a wideman, having so far failed to meet Borussia Dortmund’s £109m asking price for 20-year-old Jadon Sancho.
Bale was close to sealing a move to China last summer, until Madrid blocked the transfer at the last minute.

But they are now happy for the him to leave as they attempt to offset their wage bill and recoup transfer funds.

It comes after James Rodriquez, 29, was sold to Everton for £20m.
Zidane is said to be meeting Bale this week to discuss his future at the club.
The unwanted player already revealed Madrid have made it hard for him to leave in the past.
Bale told Sky Sports: “There have been other instances where we have tried to go but the club won’t allow it or they have done something.
“What can I say? I want to play football. I am still motivated to play football so I guess it is on the club really.
“I can’t do anything, they are in control of everything
“I have a contract so all I can do is carry on what I am doing an hopefully something comes up.
“It is in the club’s hands and they have made things very difficult to be honest.”

Arsenal ‘join Man Utd and Liverpool in transfer race’ for 18-year-old Sporting Lisbon Nuno Mendes

ARSENAL have reportedly joined Manchester United and Liverpool in the race for Sporting Lisbon’s 18-year-old Nuno Mendes.
Portuguese outlet O Jogo reports the North London club are the most interested Premier League side in the player.

    2

Nuno Mendes is attracting Premier League interest
The Gunners face competition from AC Milan for the Portuguese starlet, with the Serie A side reportedly launching a bid worth £13.5million.
But Sporting are understood to be holding out for a much bigger sum – something that could derail Mikel Arteta’s pursuit of the left-back.
With Mendes contracted until 2025, Sporting are not forced to sell up.

And are waiting for any interested party to activate the defender’s £40.5m release clause before he is allowed to leave.
Although they may accept a slightly lower fee, clubs are currently way off their lofty valuation of the Portugal youth international.
Arsenal are looking to sign a back-up for Scot Kieran Tierney.

Mendes can also play at centre-back and his versatility will be a great asset within the Arsenal squad as the fixtures pile up.
He impressed after making nine senior appearances for Sporting in 2019-20 and is considered the best left-back in Europe for his age group.
Liverpool were thought to have made contact about a move for the player earlier in the window.
But Jurgen Klopp opted to instead sign Greek ace Kostas Tsimikas for £12m.
While United are showing some interest in purchasing competition for Luke Shaw and Brandon Williams at left-back.
And a deal would be made easier by the fact Mendes is believed to be represented by Miguel Pinho – Bruno Fernandes’ agent.

Man Utd plan THREE more transfers this summer with Solskjaer making Sancho ‘priority’ along with Mykolenko and Brooks

MANCHESTER UNITED want to make THREE more signings before the transfer window shuts.
Borussia Dortmund star Jadon Sancho remains Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s No1 target.

However, reports have claimed that Old Trafford transfer chiefs have the funds to bring in more players as Sancho’s proposed move drags on.
United’s talks with Sancho’s people and Dortmund are said to be in need of a “drastic breakthrough” as the Bundesliga side refuse to budge on their £108million valuation of the England winger.
And Jamie Carragher has warned United that Liverpool will happily swoop should they fail to land the 20-year-old.
But United are also busy elsewhere and want to buy a left-back, centre-back and centre-forward in addition to looking at Sancho alternatives.

Manchester Evening News says Bournemouth and Wales attacker David Brooks has been “under consideration” for more than a year.
The Cherries valued him at £50m last year and that was said to have put United off a move.
But they could now look to cash in having dropped down to the championship.
Juventus ace Douglas Costa is another attacking threat that Solskjaer is looking at.

It is claimed United could pursue the rapid winger on a one-year loan deal – or reignite interest in Ivan Perisic, although he is expected to join Bayern full time from Inter.
While not a priority gap to fill, the MEN report how Old Trafford chiefs have been mightily impressed by 21-year-old Dynamo Kiev and Ukraine star Vitaliy Mykolenko.
But Real Madrid ace Sergio Reguillon has also been offered in the left-back spot that could offer intense competition to Luke Shaw.
Odion Ighalo is set to return to China in January so Solskjaer could look for someone else there.
Bournemouth front man Joshua King, who was on United’s books as a teenager, was the subject of a failed £20m bid in January.
The Red Devils could go back in for their former player after his recent come-and-get-me plea.

At the back, Chris Smalling, who looks set to join Roma permanently, Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo have all been told they are free to leave.
Dayot Upamecano has a £37m release clause at RB Leipzig and is said to be of interest but he signed a new deal there in July.
Should United continue to look on the continent, though, they have received bad news about Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly.
Neighbours Man City and Paris Saint-Germain are said to be leading the chase for the £63m-rated defender.
United were interested in Fiorentina’s Nikola Milenkovic last summer and could try their luck again, especially given ex-Utd ace Dimitar Berbatov has told the club that strengthening there is a must.

Man Utd and Arsenal transfer target Samuel Umtiti could leave Barcelona for FREE and have contract RIPPED UP

MANCHESTER UNITED and Arsenal target Samuel Umtiti could leave Barcelona for FREE, according to reports.
Mundo Deportivo reports the French defender could see his contract, which runs until 2023, RIPPED UP as Barcelona consider letting him leave for nothing.

Umtiti, 26, has slipped behind countryman Clement Lenglet in the Catalan giants’ pecking order.
Persistent injuries have hampered his progress at the Nou Camp.
The centre-back managed just 13 LaLiga appearances last season as Barca surrendered the league title to El Clasico rivals Real Madrid.
He also tested positive for Covid-19 before the club’s 8-2 Champions League humiliation at the hands of Bayern Munich last month.

And now is the latest player to be cast aside by new Barca boss Ronald Koeman.
The former Holland chief has already offloaded Ivan Rakitic and told Luis Suarez and Arturo Vidal they are NOT in his future plans.
Rakitic took a massive pay-cut to rejoin Sevilla while Juventus are poised to sign Suarez – IF he passes an Italian language test.
And Umtiti could also be shown the exit door with a number of Premier League clubs interested including Arsenal and Man Utd.

Man Utd ruled out Kai Havertz transfer as they refused to meet Leverkusen’s asking price and focused attention on Sancho

MANCHESTER UNITED refused to match the asking price for Kai Havertz and focused on Jadon Sancho instead.
The Red Devils were interested in Chelsea’s new signing but viewed Havertz as an alternative to Sancho not an additional signing, according to MEN Sport.

And the club were put off by Bayer Leverkusen’s hefty £90million price tag.
    The Blues ultimately snared Havertz, 21, on a five-year deal for a cut-price £70m.
The deal was Frank Lampard’s SEVENTH summer signing.
Fellow German Timo Werner, Hakim Ziyech, Thiago Silva, Xavier Mbuyama, Malang Sarr and Ben Chilwell have all put pen to paper at Stamford Bridge.

Meanwhile, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s quest to sign Sancho, 20, has floundered with crunch talks failing to pick up the pace on a potential deal.
Dortmund are asking for a bumper fee in the region of £108m for Sancho to move to Old Trafford.
The Red Devils have even been warned by Jamie Carragher that they could lose out on the England star to rivals Liverpool.
