Wayne Rooney tells Man Utd to make Tariq Lamptey one of THREE transfer deals as Bayern Munich close in on Brighton ace

WAYNE ROONEY has told Manchester United to make signings in three key areas ahead of the transfer deadline day.
And the Old Trafford legend has pinpointed Brighton’s Tariq Lamptey as a player Ole Gunnar Solskjaer should go all out to land.

However, reports claim German giants Bayern Munich are also plotting a move for the highly rated right-back.
Writing in his Sunday Times column, Rooney waxed lyrical about 20-year-old Lamptey – who he reckons can replace Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
Rooney said: “Personally, if I were doing their recruiting, as well as that No 9 I’d go for another centre half to partner Harry Maguire and try for Brighton & Hove Albion’s Tariq Lamptey, who looks a brilliant attacking right back.
“While Aaron Wan-Bissaka has done OK defensively, you want United full backs to put the opposition on the back foot when the team have the ball and I don’t think he does that.

“Luke Shaw can at times but you always worry from a fitness point of view whether he can do it for 90 minutes so I think full back is an area where United could really improve.
“The game has changed and where before your full backs didn’t have to be attacking players, they just had to provide overlaps and be an option, nowadays they have to play a full part going forward — flooding the gaps when wide strikers such as Rashford come in from the sides.”
German website Kicker reiterated claims Bayern were looking to swoop in with a late £14million move for Lamptey – who Brighton rate at more like £23m.
England legend Rooney also told United to forget about their “odd” pursuit of Jadon Sancho and instead spend £100m on Tottenham’s Harry Kane.

Rooney said: “Why consider paying close to £100million for someone similar to talent you’ve got already?
“United have Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial and where would Sancho’s arrival leave Mason Greenwood, who plays in the same position and is of similar age?
“I’d rather put that £100 million towards trying to get Harry Kane.”
United icon Rooney was also clear in his view that Solskjaer has to sign another player to partner Harry Maguire in the middle of the back line.
RB Leipzig’s 21-year-old defender Dayot Upamecano is one name Solskjaer and United transfer chiefs were looking at.
While the Red Devils and Arsenal were just two of five clubs keeping close tabs on Barcelona’s Samuel Umtiti.

Man Utd’s transfer priority should be a centre-forward and centre-back NOT Jadon Sancho, claims Teddy Sheringham

TEDDY SHERINGHAM says Manchester United need a world-class signing — but not Jadon Sancho.
The former United and Spurs star believes bringing in a top-class centre-forward or centre-back — or preferably both — should be the priority at Old Trafford.

Red Devils legend Teddy Sheringham believes his old club need a centre-back and a centre-forwardCredit: Getty Images – Getty

Sheringham said: “I’m not sure that Sancho is the answer to what Manchester United need at the moment.
“They’ve got tricky wingers. They’ve got flying players. If anything, they still need players down the spine of the team.
“If they are going to be a top team, they need a top centre- forward and another top centre-half to play alongside Maguire.
“You look at Liverpool and the signings they have made, Thiago and Jota. They are fantastic acquisitions, to make them even better than they were last year.

“Have Man Utd done that? I don’t think so.”
And Sheringham knows from experience that big-name transfers can have not only a direct effect on a team, but can also have an indirect impact on an entire club.
Sheringham said: “I go back to when Jurgen Klinsmann came to Tottenham.
“He was the biggest lift I’ve ever known at a football club.

They’ve got tricky wingers. They’ve got flying players. If anything, they still need players down the spine of the team.
    Teddy Sheringham on Jadon Sancho

“Around that time, Ossie Ardiles was the manager and he actually told me he was thinking about signing Maradona. I was like, ‘Wow, Ossie, let’s do it’.
“About ten days later he came to me and said, ‘Look, I’m not going to sign Maradona. There’s too much baggage with him. But I think you’ll like his replacement — Jurgen Klinsmann.’
“I was blown away by his name and by the way he came in and trained and played and lifted the whole club.”
Sheringham believes the second coming of Gareth Bale at Tottenham is already having a similar impact, even before the Welshman has kicked a ball for the club.
The former England striker, who had two spells at Spurs, said: “I can’t think of a better signing, apart from Lionel Messi, that Tottenham could have made to make them a better team all round.
“I think he’s already lifted everybody just by being at the club. When he starts playing, it will be even better.

    3

“That presence of a top player again, on the pitch, just gives you so much. It gives other people a bit more space.
“When Bale plays, there’s going to be a defender on him plus a midfield player looking out for him, plus the winger, and that gives other people space on the pitch.
“He might not play 50 games out of 50 for Tottenham. But the 30 games that he will play, I think he’ll be a great acquisition. A fantastic signing.”
But Sheringham says the jury is still very much out on whether Jose Mourinho is the right man to take Spurs forward.
He believes that if Mourinho can win a trophy and/or take Tottenham back into the Champions League, supporters will tolerate the team playing less attractive football.
He said: “I know they were very good in the League Cup against Chelsea but that’s the first time I’ve seen it from a Tottenham team under Jose, I think.
“I think he still needs to prove to everyone in the Tottenham camp, to the supporters, that he can get back to when he first came over and was managing Chelsea.
“Winning would be enough, right this minute.

I think he still needs to prove to everyone in the Tottenham camp, to the supporters, that he can get back to when he first came over and was managing Chelsea.
    Teddy Sherringham on Jose Mourinho

“I know a lot of Tottenham supporters and I think they would take a George Graham sort of 1-0, 1-0, 1-0, to take them to cup finals and win the cup finals, or even better than that, to get you up the league.
“He’s been brought in because Daniel Levy’s thinking on the matter is, ‘Sod all this fancy football and not winning anything, we need to start competing and winning stuff’.
“Hopefully that’s the reaction you are going to get from Jose and his players.”
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Sheringham’s old United team-mate and fellow 1999 European Cup Final goalscorer, is also under pressure to take United forward.
Sheringham said: “He’s the nicest man I’ve ever met in football. He has a lovely family, lovely wife and two kids.
“I was so surprised to hear that he was going into football management.
“I thought he might be too nice, but I think he’s adapted to it very well.
“He’s still a very young manager so he’s going to make mistakes and he’s going to be naive in certain aspects.

“At the moment, I think he’s doing OK. He has to do better than last season.
“If there is progression in the football club, I think you keep your manager.
“As soon as there isn’t progression, the question marks are going to be out.
“If you’re going to go one better than last year, you’ve got to be winning things and finishing closer to the top teams.”
A big signing would be a big help to Solskjaer. Just not necessarily Sancho.

Man Utd on brink of Edinson Cavani transfer and think veteran can echo Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s impact

MANCHESTER UNITED are on the brink of landing Edinson Cavani on a free transfer.
And club insiders are convinced the Uruguay striker can have a similar impact on the club as cult hero Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Cavani, 33, was released by Paris Saint-Germain in June and is due in Manchester on Sunday ahead of agreeing a two-year contract worth about £200,000-a-week.
As long as he passes the medical there should be no problems finalising a deal because both parties are determined to make it happen.
Some fans are already voicing fears that the move will see the club plunge into a financial fiasco like the one that cost £66million in wages for flop Alexis Sanchez.
But sources insist the top brass view it more like the move that saw Ibrahimovic become a terrace idol.

Cavani’s wages will be half the salary Sanchez was on — and he is said to be desperate to prove himself in England.
And United believe he will be a  boost to the development of their young strikers.
He joined PSG from Napoli seven years ago and his 200 goals made him the club’s leading scorer.
Atletico Madrid, Benfica and Inter Miami had all expressed an interest in him, but could not meet his wage demands.

And while United will pay top dollar in salary, it is a far cry from the £108m Borussia Dortmund demanded for first-choice target Jadon Sancho.
Last night Dortmund’s sporting director Michael Zorc insisted Sancho was going nowhere.
The England winger was missing from the squad for Saturday’s 4-0 win over Freiburg.
But Zorc told Sky: “Jadon  is our player and he’s got a long-term contract with us.
“He was ill — there’s no transfers reason, that’s why Jadon is not playing.”

Edinson Cavani ‘agrees Man Utd transfer’ with ex-PSG star set to sign two-year deal

MANCHESTER UNITED have reportedly agreed a two-year contract with striker Edinson Cavani.
The 33-year-old is a free agent having left Paris Saint-Germain in the summer.

Now, according to ESPN, the Uruguayan will pull on United’s famous red shirt after agreeing terms.
Cavani is set to fly to Manchester from Paris on Sunday to complete a medical.
The deal is likely to be officially announced either later that day or Monday.
Atletico Madrid, Benfica and Inter Miami were interested in the Uruguayan striker.

But his reported demands of £210,000-week and a two-year contract proved a stumbling block.
Meanwhile United have made a stuttering start to the season and have lacked that killer touch up top.
Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood have so far failed to match their post-restart form.
United have previously tried to sign Cavani when David Moyes was in charge in 2014, but that proved fruitless.

He has also been linked with an equally-sensational move to Premier League new-boys Leeds.
He netted 200 goals in 301 appearances for PSG before deciding to end his time with the French giants this summer.
United’s top target was believed to be Jadon Sancho, but the Cavani signing may mean the Premier League giants have accepted defeat.

Man Utd set to complete transfer of 16-year-old defender Willy Kambwala for £3.6m from Ligue 2 side Sochaux

MANCHESTER UNITED are ready to make defender Willy Kambwala their latest acquisition in this summer’s youth recruitment drive.
French outlet RMC Sport claim the Red Devils have agreed a £3.6million fee with Ligue 2 side Sochaux for the talented 16-year-old.

    1

Manchester United are closing in on defender Willy Kambwala

United yesterday confirmed the signing of teen goal-machine Charlie McNeill from rivals Man City, along with fellow kid striker Alejandro Garnacho from Atletico Madrid.
That was on top of Marc Jurado from Barcelona and Alvaro Fernandez from Real Madrid, as well as Isak Hansen-Aaroen from Norwegian side Tromso.
Now they are set to be joined by Kambwala, who will to travel to Manchester on Sunday ahead of signing a four-year deal at Old Trafford.
United had been tracking Kambwala for months and even had £1m bid for the centre-back – who can also play in midfield – rejected in July.

Sochaux had been desperate to hold onto their prized asset and were said to have offered him a professional contract in order to convince him to stay.
But now they have accepted United’s improved offer, and Sochaux will retain a sell-on clause.
Premier League champions Liverpool were also believed to be interested in the prodigy.
Yet neither the Reds nor rivals United could officially land Kambwala until the end of August at the earliest when he turned 16.

But Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has now been handed a boost with the talented teen seemingly set to join United’s famed academy.
The Norwegian had been intent on snapping up an experienced central defender to partner captain Harry Maguire.

Yet with just two days until Monday’s deadline, Kambwala appears to be the only arrival in that area.
United’s only senior signing of the transfer window after the £39m capture of Ajax star Donny van de Beek.
But the Red Devils are hoping Kambwala is soon followed in the door at Old Trafford by Jadon Sancho, Alex Telles or Ousmane Dembele.

Man Utd transfer chase of Barcelona’s Ousmane Dembele hots up as Ronald Koeman admits ‘his future depends on him’

RONALD KOEMAN has hinted Ousmane Dembele could depart Barcelona for Manchester United as he stated the future is in his hands.
The 23-year-old has been heavily linked with a switch to Old Trafford on a loan deal, with the forward seen as an alternative to Jadon Sancho.

It has been claimed that Paul Pogba has been trying to convince his French compatriot to swap LaLiga for the Premier League.
Negotiations are said to be progressing well, with L’Equipe stating the World Cup winner is ‘enthusiastic’ about joining Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.
And Barca boss Koeman has now revealed that Dembele could be on his way out of the Nou Camp – three years after he joined from Borussia Dortmund.
He told reporters in Spain: “He [Dembele] is a Barca player.

“His future depends on what he thinks.
“I haven’t spoken to him about his future. We’ll see.
“I want to have happy people here, if they [players] aren’t happy because they don’t play, they can speak to me.
“Dembele hasn’t told me anything. If nothing happens, I’m counting on him and he will have options [to play].”

As well as a move for Dembele, United have also been linked with bringing Edinson Cavani to the Theatre of Dreams.
The Uruguay striker is available on a free transfer having run his contract down at Paris Saint-Germain.
It has been claimed that the 33-year-old has held talks with United, who wants a two-year contract and a weekly wage of £210,000.

Edinson Cavani transfer to Man Utd takes step closer and 33-year-old free agent ‘could fly to UK TODAY’

MANCHESTER UNITED are reportedly close to sealing a sensational deal to sign free-agent Edinson Cavani.
And the former Paris Saint-Germain striker could fly into the UK today to seal the deal.

MailOnline reports that United ‘are holding talks’ with the 33-year-old and that his signing ‘would make economic and sporting sense’.
Clubs’ finances across the spectrum have been hit by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and subsequent restrictions.
Atletico Madrid, Benfica and Inter Miami are all interested in the Uruguayan striker.

But his reported demands of £210,000-week and a two-year contract are proving difficult for those three teams to meet.
Meanwhile United have made a stuttering start to the season and have lacked that killer touch up top.
Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood don’t appear to have hit the ground running so far.

United’s top target remains Jadon Sancho.
But with the days ticking down until the international transfer window slams shut, United have been unable to agree on a fee with his club Borussia Dortmund.
Barcelona’s wantaway winger Ousmane Dembele has emerged as a possible alternative, with a loan deal mooted.
Porto left-back Alex Telles is also believed to be a transfer target, but again the two clubs can’t agree on a fee.

Rio Ferdinand slams Man Utd’s ‘frustrating’ transfer window and says top four is best they will do without new signings

MANCHESTER UNITED legend Rio Ferdinand has slammed the club’s transfer business this window and claimed top four will be the best they can aim for.
The 41-year-old has spoken of his frustration of the Red Devils’ lack of recruits with Donny van de Beek the only arrival to Old Trafford so far.

United are yet to make a breakthrough with Borussia Dortmund in their pursuit of Jadon Sancho with BVB holding out for £108million.
Meanwhile they are haggling over the £18m fee Porto are demanding for left-back Alex Telles.
And with the window to close in two days, Ferdinand has lamented United’s transfer business.
Speaking on BT Sport, he said: “The most frustrating thing for Man Utd fans, is that we’ve all been very aware of who the targets were at the beginning of the window.

“That’s the frustrating element. You look at it, is Covid playing a part in the financials? There’s purse strings having to be pulled a little bit.
“We saw left-back and right-wing are the areas they are looking for but then all of a sudden the season starts, the players haven’t been brought in.
“All of a sudden a defeat to Palace at home absolutely ignites the negativity that surrounds the place and makes it a situation it never was.
“We rewind two months previous, everyone was saying, ‘Well done, Ole’. Got them into Champions League position, the club’s on this upward trajectory now and two months – because there’s not been the signings and a first defeat of the season at home – really changes the picture massively for the club.”

Asked whether he believes United can challenge for the Premier League title without any new additions, Ferdinand grimly predicted: “No.
“Not in my eyes. Champions League will be the target for me realistically.”
Sancho has been the No1 priority for United this window, but Dortmund have stated that the winger will not be leaving Germany.
Dortmund chief Michael Zorc said on Friday: “Of course we communicated with Manchester United in the past.
“But everything there is to tell on this matter from our end has already been said.
“And that won’t change over the next three days.”
