Man Utd and Chelsea in Denis Zakaria transfer battle as duo fight for Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder

BORUSSIA MONCHENGLADBACH midfielder Denis Zakaria is reportedly at the centre of a transfer battle between Manchester United and Chelsea.
The 23-year-old – who still has two years left on his contract with the Bundesliga side – has been out with a knee injury since March.

But that hasn’t stopped both the Red Devils and the Blues to eye up a move for the Swiss international, who could be allowed to leave next summer.

According to Bild, the two Premier League clubs are vying to bring the former Young Boys star to England.
United are in need for a defensive midfielder to replace the ageing Nemanja Matic, who turned 32 in August.
Meanwhile Frank Lampard is looking for alternatives to West Ham’s Declan Rice having failed to prise him away from the London Stadium.

But the two teams could still miss out on Zakaria, with it claimed that Bayern Munich are also keen to snap him up.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is known to be a fan of the player, with United heavily linked with a move to sign him last season.
Liverpool have also been credited with an interest in the £37million-rated maestro.
Zakaria spoke earlier in the year about how flattering it was to be linked with moves to Europe’s biggest clubs.

Speaking in March, he said: “[The interest] spurs me on and gives me strength to improve further.
“The fact that other clubs are dealing with me shows that I perform well.
“But I only concentrate on Borussia. We can achieve great things this season.” More

Man Utd transfer blow as Erling Haaland ‘prefers Real Madrid move’ from Dortmund with release clause activating in 2022

BORUSSIA DORTMUND striker Erling Haaland reportedly favours a move to Real Madrid ahead of Manchester United.
The 20-year-old has continued his goalscoring exploits this season having banged in five goals in six games for the Bundesliga outfit.

And according to ABC, the ex-Red Bull Salzburg star is prioritising a move to the Bernabeu when he eventually departs Germany.

They state that he is keen to play alongside Norwegian compatriot Martin Odegaard at Los Blancos.
Relations between BVB and Real are understood to be excellent, with Dortmund signing Achraf Hakimi and Reinier Jesus on loan in recent campaigns.
Haaland is believed to have a £65million release clause in his contract which will be active in 2022.

United have retained their interest in the player having lost out to Dortmund in January when they brought him in from Austria.
And they are also facing competition from Premier League rivals Chelsea in the race to secure Haaland’s services.
But it is Real that are in pole position to sign him, as they look to partner him alongside Paris Saint-Germain ace Kylian Mbappe.
The LaLiga champions are desperate to land both strikers as well as Rennes starlet Eduardo Camavinga in a £261m splurge.

Despite many labelling Haaland as the complete striker, the player himself has insisted he must be more clinical in front of goal.
Haaland fired in 44 goals last season for Dortmund and Salzburg, though he has stressed he should have scored half a century.
Speaking to local Dortmund newspaper Ruhr Nachrichten, Haaland said: “My finishing needs to improve, I need to be more clinical, more ruthless.
“I also need to get better in linking up with my team-mates. I know that.
“I watch replays of my goals quite a lot, I’m constantly trying to learn more about goalscoring.
“I don’t only watch the goals I score, I watch other players’ as well – how and where do they score, what’s their position before the ball arrives, how do they move?
“I analyse all these little details that could help me to score more goals. So I’ve watched all 44 of my goals from last season quite a lot.
“I actually think about all the chances I missed, I could easily have scored over 50 goals last season.”

Man Utd given Sancho hope as Dortmund will ‘never say player is unsellable’ but Woodward told he ‘misjudged situation’

MANCHESTER UNITED have been given hope of signing Jadon Sancho next year.
United were found wanting in their pursuit of the Borussia Dortmund star this summer, after failing to pay the German outfit’s £108million asking price.

But Borussia Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke has hinted United may have a chance of landing their man if they renew their interest at the end of the season.
Watzke said: “In this industry, you can never say that a player is completely unsellable.
“I heard and read everywhere in the spring that Sancho was gone.

“But he’s here. We had an agreement with him.”

Dortmund had originally set an August 10 deadline for any team wanting to match Sancho’s price tag, but United thought the Black and Yellows would soften their stance if a suitable offer arrived.
Despite Dortmund maintaining Sancho would remain at the Westfalenstadion for the 2020-21 season, the Red Devils reportedly prepared a £91m offer including add-ons for the 20-year-old in the last few days of the transfer window.
Chief executive Ed Woodward was informed the bid would be swiftly rejected and United were left scrambling to find an alternative to Sancho on deadline day, with a loan move for Barcelona outcast Ousmane Dembele ultimately falling through.
Without mentioning Woodward and United by name, Watzke said: “[They] misjudged the situation.

“We had a clear line and will continue to do so next summer.”
United did manage to secure the signings of teenage forwards Facundo Pellistri and Amad Traore, as well as veteran striker Edinson Cavani, on deadline day but will likely have to wait until next summer to prise Sancho from Borussia Dortmund.
However, reports say they could face competition from the likes of Liverpool and Bayern Munich for the England international. More

Man Utd eye Federico Valverde transfer as Real Madrid midfielder starts to fulfil potential

MANCHESTER UNITED have put Real Madrid’s Uruguay superstar Federico Valverde on their hit-list.
The midfield magician has pushed his way into the Spanish side’s team this season and started to justify his big reputation.

Valverde, 22, has been tipped for the top for years but is slowly proving his quality in LaLiga — and long-term admirers United are on red alert.
And with Paul Pogba openly admitting he likes the idea of a move to Real Madrid in the future, United are keeping an eye on Valverde in case a swap becomes possible.
Valverde has a £640MILLION buyout clause, which shows how much Real think of him.
It would be unusual for United to sign a player from a major European rival at his age but Pogba could be a very intriguing pawn in the game.

Old Trafford boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had confirmed the club triggered the one-year extension in Pogba’s contract.
His deal was up at the end of this season with no announcement that the club had taken up the opportunity to extend it by a further year.
Solskjaer said: “Paul’s our player, he’s going to be here for another two years and sure he’s focused on doing his best for us and we want to see the best from Paul and I’m sure in the next couple of years we’ll get the best out of him.”
Just last week the Frenchman once again flirted with Real, who he said it would be a ‘dream’ to play for.

Pogba said: “Yes, all footballers would like to play for Real Madrid.
“Maybe it is a dream. It is a dream for me, why not one day? As I have said, I am at Manchester United and I like my club.
“I am performing at Manchester United, I am enjoying myself and I want to do everything I can to get the club back to where it deserves to be.
“I am going to give my maximum, like my teammates. I prefer to concentrate on football and on returning to fitness.”

Man Utd’s worst signings XI post-Sir Alex, including Fred, Di Maria and Depay that cost an amazing £325m

SIR ALEX FERGUSON left Manchester United with the Premier League trophy – but a raft of bad signings has seen it taken away with little sign of returning.
A massive £323.7million has been splashed on 11 particularly dodgy deals.

The worst XI of bad signings predominantly features attackers as the Red Devils failed to replace the likes of Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie.
Romelu Lukaku cost an initial £75m and United struggled to find takers when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer decided to offload the Belgian in the summer – where he has since thrived.
A promising first season was lost with a drop-off in 2018-19, scoring at an average of one every three games before leaving for Inter Milan.

At the very least, Lukaku provided some memorable moments but the same cannot be said for Angel Di Maria.
The winger arrived with much fanfare in 2014 and quickly dropped off the pace, shepherded out to Paris Saint-Germain where he painfully found the form he lacked in England.
The next expensive error was Fred who joined for £52m, but he still has time to prove himself at Old Trafford.
In the slightly more affordable but nonetheless useless category are Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Morgan Schneiderlin, who came in for £30m and £27m respectively.

Depay inherited the hallowed No7 shirt but failed to do it justiceCredit: PA:Empics Sport
Still, United recouped most of the fee they spent on French anchor man Schneiderlin when he joined Everton but Mkhitaryan’s exit saw Alexis Sanchez arrive – making the Chilean’s initial fee cheap and yet still a huge disappointment.
Among those who arrived with potential and waited until after leaving to go on to great things is Memphis Depay.
Now a star at Lyon and with the Dutch national team, his baffling form in the 2015/16 season showed that United had lost their touch when turning young gems into superstars.
Many United fans point to executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward as the chief architect of these abysmal deals.
While replacing the peerless David Gill was a tough assignment, and finding a man capable of replacing Fergie nigh-on impossible, there are serious questions over his approach.
Not only are these players examples of bad deals, managers such as Jose Mourinho were dismayed that not enough players were bought.
Marcos Rojo and Daley Blind were picked up in 2014 off the back of good World Cup campaigns – a strategy that rarely pays off and cost the club over £30m.
And although Matteo Darmian was an Italian international when plucked from Torino, Louis van Gaal’s exit cast him to the fringes.
Rounding off this worst XI are two short-term signings that never got to grips with the Premier League.

Falcao struggled both at United and ChelseaCredit: PA:Empics Sport

Perhaps the Red Devils thought they were pulling off a cunning piece of Andrea Pirlo-esque business when bringing in Bastian Schweinsteiger but, at 31, the German was far past his best during an 18-month spell.
Radamel Falcao was still in his late-20s when arriving on loan in 2014 on a £6m fee and massive wage combination yet hit just four goals in 29 games.
Of course, not all of Fergie’s signings hit the right note – just ask Kleberson, Eric Djemba Djemba or Juan-Sebastian Veron.

Man Utd icon Diego Forlan calls Edinson Cavani a ‘top signing’ and backs compatriot to become ‘new Zlatan Ibrahimovic’

MANCHESTER UNITED legend Diego Forlan believes Edinson Cavani can become the ‘new Zlatan Ibrahimovic’ at the club.
The Uruguayan has joined the Red Devils on a free transfer after he left Paris Saint-Germain in the summer.

Although now 33-years-old, Cavani has enjoyed a goal-laden career with 341 league goals in 556 games.
And Forlan, who became a United cult hero despite only being at the club between 2002 and 2004, believes the signing will work out well.
And the 41-year-old expects Cavani to have a similar impact at Old Trafford to that of Ibrahimovic.

The Swede signed for United on a one-year deal in 2016 which was then extended for a second season before leaving to join LA Galaxy in March, 2018.

Ibra, now playing for AC Milan at the age of 39, netted 29 times in all competitions for the Premier League giants.
Speaking to the South China Morning Post, Forlan said: “Edinson is still a great player. I’ve not seen any decline in him yet. I think he’s a top signing for United, just like Zlatan was.
“He’s that type of player. He’ll lead by example, by how he trains and how he plays. He’ll be a positive influence for the young players.
“He’s a winner who has won lots of trophies, a goalscorer who has scored wherever he has been, he assists too.

“He’s strong and his physique will be fine for English football. He’s quick, he’s highly motivated.”
Cavani will have to wait a little longer before he can make his Red Devils debut.
The striker, believed to be earning around £200,000-a-week has had to self isolate for two weeks following his move to England.
This has ruled him out of this weekend’s showdown against Newcastle.
The 116-cap Uruguay international is in line to make his United debut against his old club PSG.
United face the French giants in the Champions League on Tuesday night.
The striker will be available as he will be out of self-isolation by then.
It is likely that he will start on the bench, but he could make a late appearance.

Arsenal preparing to hijack £35m transfer swoop for Pau Torres from under noses of Man Utd in January to bolster defence

ARSENAL are preparing to hijack Manchester United’s £35million transfer swoop for Pau Torres in January, according to reports.
Both clubs are still thought to want to bring in another centre-back to bolster their defences when the window reopens.

And according to Spanish news outlet todofichajes.com, Mikel Arteta and Edu have a plan to land Torres.
The Villarreal defender, 23, has attracted plenty of attention over the past couple of years – including from both Arsenal and United.
Now the two Premier League clubs are reportedly ready to battle it out for his signature.

Torres joined Villarreal way back in 2002 and progressed right through the academy, C team, B team and made his first-team debut in 2016 in a Copa del Rey clash.
He spent the 2018-19 season on loan at Malaga before returning last year to seal his spot in the heart of Villarreal’s defence.
His strong performances saw him win his first Spain cap in November 2019, coming on as a substitute for Sergio Ramos and scoring a minute later in the 7-0 thumping of Malta.
Arsenal brought in Gabriel Magalhaes in the summer and made Pablo Mari’s move permanent while David Luiz was handed a contract extension.

Gabriel, Luiz and Rob Holding have started the season but the Gunners also have Calum Chambers, William Saliba, Shkodran Mustafi and Sokratis.

Konstantinos Mavropanos is on loan with Stuttgart for the season.
But with Mustafi, Sokratis and Luiz expected to be moved on in the coming year, the addition of Torres would further strengthen Arsenal’s defence – if they can convince ex-boss Unai Emery to do business.
For United, meanwhile, a centre-back is a major priority.
Victor Lindelof, Eric Bailly and Harry Maguire have all struggled for early-season form while Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo were frozen out.
The Red Devils sold Chris Smalling to Roma in the summer but did not bring in a centre-half.
The report adds Dayot Upamecano was the first-choice option for both Arsenal and United but Liverpool are in pole position to land the RB Leipzig and France star.

Man Utd ‘tried to sign Martin Odegaard several times’ but never pulled off transfer for Real Madrid star

MANCHESTER UNITED reportedly failed in several bids to land Real Madrid star Martin Odegaard.
Spanish outlet Marca claim the Red Devils were prepared to pay big money for the Norwegian following his performances while on loan at Real Sociedad last season.

Yet the report adds that Madrid held off interest from the Old Trafford outfit to bring Odegaard back to the Bernabeu this summer.
But it was just the latest effort from United to land the attacker, who first registered an interest in him in 2014, when he was 15.
Odegaard was making a name for himself as a teenager for local side Stromsgodset but turned down England for Spain.

Speaking in 2015, he said: “I visited Liverpool, the two Manchester teams and they were all very nice.

“But my choice was Real Madrid and I am very happy with that.”
United then returned for Odegaard last October with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in charge as the Norwegian was keen to swoop for his young compatriot.
SunSport also revealed that club scout Marcel Bout was spotted watching Odegaard in Sociedad’s 3-0 win over Valencia in February.
And Madrid were even thought to have offered the playmaker to United in a potential deal for Paul Pogba before the summer.
