Fernandes has been persuaded to stay after the signing of pal Cristiano Ronaldo and huge investment in the transfer market.
The 27-year-old – who was wanted by Real Madrid and Barcelona – will increase his Man Utd salary by nearly £100,000-a-week with the new contract.
SunSport understands his new terms – which will last until 2026 – could be announced within the next few weeks after successful talks.
The attacking midfielder has become a key part of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team, and a vocal leader in the dressing room.
He has made a stunning impact since his £60million signing from Sporting Lisbon around 18-months ago.
Fernandes was one of the reasons Ronaldo returned to Old Trafford over the summer as they are close international pals.

His current deal runs until 2025, but another year is set to be added onto that along with retaining a 12-month extension option.
The former Sampdoria man could still be behind Ronaldo, David De Gea, Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane and Paul Pogba in the wage order at Old Trafford.
However, he is expected to be up there with the top earners at the club now, along with bonuses and incentives added.
United have had a mixed start to the season with ten points in four Premier League games so far.
But a disappointing last-minute 2-1 loss at Young Boys on Tuesday night got their Champions League campaign off to a poor start.

Lingard is currently into the final year of his contract at Manchester United and as yet there has been no agreement over an extension.
But Solskjaer says the 28-year-old, who starred in a loan spell at West Ham last season, has his full support – and talks over his future will continue with the hope of keeping him.
The United boss said: “Jesse has got this season left, we are talking to him and his dad. We see him as a United player in future.
“He’s come back into us after a great spell at West Ham. He showed his quality there.
“He’s back in England squad, he scores goals for England and we really want to see the best of him.
“We support him and hope to keep him here. He’s a red through and through. “

Lingard goes back to the London Stadium with the Red Devils to face the Hammers in the Premier League on Sunday.
The veteran Uruguayan suffered a strain recently and did not feature against Newcastle and Young Boys.
Meanwhile, Solskjaer said another forward, Edinson Cavani, could feature in the Carabao Cup tie against West Ham on Wednesday.
Solskjaer says the depth of his squad now means there is no need to rush Cavani back but says he hopes he will rejoin the group next week.
He’s a top professional and he can’t wait to get back on the pitch.Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on Edinson Cavani
He said: “Hopefully he’ll start training after the weekend. He may be involved on Wednesday.
“Edi had a fantastic season last season, the impact he made towards the end when he got his fitness.
“He struggled early on with injuries. We feel to get the best of him, have to have him 100 per cent fit and not pushing him.
“We’ve a strong squad that will allow us to let players heal and take no risks.
“I see him having a massive impact, he’s that type of personality and player.
“He’s a top professional and he can’t wait to get back on the pitch.”

Lingard’s United team-mates publicly rallied around the star following his error against Young Boys and took to social media to show their support.
In a reply to the winger’s apologetic post on Instagram, Bruno Fernandes wrote: “We win together. We lose together.”
Paul Pogba added: “The measure of success is how many times you bounce back. We strong”.

And Diogo Dalot replied with the words “always together with you”.
Man United will look to bounce back in Europe when they take on Villarreal next in the Champions League.
The club will play Aston Villa in the Premier League prior to that game.

Man Utd transfer blow as Leon Goretzka signs new Bayern Munich contract after being linked with exit

LEON GORETZKA has dashed Man United’s hopes luring him to Old Trafford with Bayern Munich sealing a new deal with the star. The midfielder, who was a Real Madrid target, has signed a new five-year contract to stay with the German champions until 2026.
Leon Goretzka has penned a new deal to remain at Bayern Munich until 2026
Goal reports the Bundesliga club’s deal with the Germany international to be worth between £10million and £12.8m a year.
And the move ends rumours linking the former Schalke star, 26,  with a Red Devils switch on a free, with his previous deal due to expire at the end of this season.
Of his new deal, Goretzka said: “I am very happy that I was able to extend my contract early until 2026.
“We have won everything there is to be won over the past three years.
“But it is even nicer than winning a title to confirm and repeat these successes. We want to build on this in the next few years.
“The team, the club and the environment are not only highly professional but also familiar. This mixture is one of the guarantors of the success of this club.

Bayern Chief Executive Oliver Kahn said: This contract extension is a sign from Leon that he is convinced that we will continue to be as successful at FC Bayern in the future as we were in the past.
“It is crucial for the development of FC Bayern that we keep our top performers in the long term.
“To be successful as a club, we need players who are permanently motivated – and Leon Goretzka doesn’t have to be told about motivation.
Goretzka, whose team will play VfL Bochum next, has won three Bundesliga titles and a Champions League with Bayern since moving to the club from Schalke in July 2018.
United are reported to have been on the hunt for a central midfielder this summer.

It is thought the player’s talks with Bayern had stalled due to Old Trafford interest in the star.
This Goretzka provided two assists in Germany’s 6-0 trouncing of Armenia in a World Cup qualifier.
And the player notched up five top-flight goals and six assists for Bayern last term helping the club to win their 31st Bundesliga title.

And according to Spanish paper Mundo Deportivo, the 18-year-old’s agent was ‘asked’ about his availability while hashing out Ronaldo’s deal to United last month.
Super agent Mendes has represented Ronaldo for over 18 years and also has Jose Mourinho, David De Gea and Ruben Dias on his roster.
Fati is widely regarded as the future of Barcelona after the cash strapped Catalans were forced to release Lionel Messi this summer and loan Antoine Griezmann back to Atletico Madrid.
The teenage prodigy has been dubbed the ‘new Messi’ by fans after the club entrusted him with the Argentinian’s famous No10 shirt.
Spanish papers also reported United had struck an agreement in principle to land Fati for a whopping £133million in 2020.

But their hopes of signing the wonderkid were canned when the La Liga giants halted transfer talks and inserted a £357m release clause into his contract.
Fati broke into Barca’s team in August  2019 as a 16-year-old and went onto score seven goals in 24 La Liga appearances during his breakout season.

He also became the youngest Champions League scorer in the competition’s history when he bagged the winner against Inter Milan the following December.
Spain boss Luis Enrique also handed Fati his international debut last year and has four caps so far.
He sustained a serious knee injury last November and only returned at the start of this season.

Manager Dean Smith is said to play a major part in Tuanzebe’s belief his future belongs at Villa Park.

“He is getting plenty of minutes on the pitch and the experience will only improve his game.
“Axel would relish the opportunity to stay beyond this season and help the club win trophies.”
Ahead of his loan move to Villa, Tuanzebe signed a new contract with the Red Devils until 2023 with the option of an extra year.
The centre-back made his debut for United in 2016 under Jose Mourinho in a pre-season friendly against Wigan Athletic.
After the game, the Special One quipped: “10 minutes is enough! The potential is there, you see it immediately.”
But since then, Tuanzebe has struggled to cement a place in the first team – with injuries hindering his progress.
Incredibly, he has captained United at all levels, including the first team in a EFL Cup victory against Rochdale in 2019.
That same season, Tuanzebe was lauded by the pundits after marking PSG forward Kylian Mbappe out of a Champions League tie at the Parc des Princes, as United recorded a famous 2-1 win.
