Brendan Rodgers emerges as Man Utd’s No1 candidate to replace Solskjaer as ex-Liverpool boss tops four-man shortlist

BRENDAN RODGERS has been put forward as the No1 candidate to take over at Manchester United.A leading agent has been sounding out potential successors to under-fire boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

As SunSport revealed last month, the Red Devils board have a four-man shortlist to replace Solskjaer if they decide to sack him.
They were Leicester boss Rodgers, Antonio Conte, Zinedine Zidane and Erik ten Hag.
Former Chelsea title winning boss Conte was interested but was not prepared to wait around once the Tottenham offer came along.
Out-of-work Zidane guided Real Madrid to three Champions League titles in two spells but indicated that he would not be interested in the Old Trafford hotseat.
There was a cool reception from Ajax coach Ten Hag who did not want to discuss any hypothetical openings with the agent.
But United have been informed he is confident they could get Rodgers out of Leicester.

The former Liverpool manager has split opinion amongst the influential voices at United who are still hoping Solskjaer can turn things around at Old Trafford.
Rodgers was manager of the year in 2014 after being pipped to the title with Liverpool by Manchester City.
He went on to win seven major trophies with Celtic before moving to Leicester in February 2019.
The 48-year-old Northern Irishman has guided them to two fifth-place finishes, just missing out on the Champions League on each occasion.

Last season he won the FA Cup by beating Chelsea in the final and they overcame Manchester City to lift the Community Shield at the start of this season.
His style of play and development of players would be a perfect fit for United.
Solskjaer’s job is hanging by a thread after losing six of his last 12 games, including humiliating back-to-back home defeats by rivals Liverpool and Manchester City.

How Man Utd could line up after Jules Kounde transfer with Solskjaer perfecting new three-at-the-back formation

MANCHESTER UNITED are being heavily linked with signing Sevilla and France defender Jules Kounde. The 22-year-old looked set to agree a deal to join Chelsea in the summer but it failed to get over the line
How Man Utd could line up with Kounde a part of their back three
And now Man Utd are leading the way in their pursuit of Kounde, who has been capped five times by Didier Deschamps’ national team.
The ex-Bordeaux central defender could well be the final piece in the jigsaw for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to effectively carry out his back three formation.
The Red Devils debuted their new 3-5-2 formation in a 3-0 victory over Tottenham last month.
Solskjaer then went on to stick with that shape for the draw with Atalanta and defeat to Manchester City.
United looked utterly overwhelmed in their loss to the Premier League champions, with Eric Bailly particularly struggling in the back three.
But if Kounde arrives at Old Trafford, he could form a solid trio alongside Harry Maguire and Raphael Varane.

An alternate way Man Utd could line up with Kounde
That would ultimately leave the likes of Bailly and Victor Lindelof out in the cold.
A defensive line of Kounde-Maguire-Varane would allow Luke Shaw and Aaron Wan-Bissaka – who have looked all at sea in recent weeks – to push on more freely.
Alternatively, there are reports that Jadon Sancho could be used by Solskjaer as a wingback as Man Utd look to shoehorn the England international into the team.
Solskjaer still has to decide whether he can fit Paul Pogba in as one of his two central midfielders.
But for the time being it appears he is keen to solidify the partnership between Fred and Scott McTominay.
Then in the attacking areas he could opt to go with a 3-4-1-2 or a 3-4-2-1.
Edinson Cavani’s contract is up at the end of the season so, given he is also 34, he is not a long-term solution for Solskjaer.
As a result, the Norwegian boss may choose to go with Bruno Fernandes behind a strike duo of Cristiano Ronaldo and Mason Greenwood.
Or instead there is the option of Fernandes and Greenwood providing the width for lone striker Ronaldo.
Man Utd currently sit sixth in the Premier League table having won just five of their 11 games so far this season.

Paul Pogba could NEVER play for Man Utd again with Red Devils ready to shelve £89m flop even after injury return

PAUL POGBA could have played his last game for Manchester United. The club’s £89million record signing is expected to be sidelined for up to TWO MONTHS after injuring his right thigh in training with France on Monday.

That would take the World Cup winner into January, when he can begin talking to other clubs about a move in the summer — when his United deal ends.
Discussions over a new contract at Old Trafford have been completely shelved.
United’s hierarchy are fed up of the circus that surrounds him, particularly with his agent Mino Raiola.
They are now happy to let the 28-year-old midfielder’s contract expire, leave him out of the team if necessary and allow him to go as a free agent.
Pogba has been a flop since his return to the club in August 2016 and United view him as an unwanted sideshow.
He was due to be banned for the Red Devils’ Prem game against Watford after the international break following his red card in last month’s 5-0 drubbing by Liverpool.

Pogba limped out of Les Bleus’ training and misses their World Cup qualifiers against Kazakhstan on Saturday and Finland next Tuesday.
United legend Paul Scholes is one of those to have seen enough of Pogba, questioning the midfielder’s maturity.
He said: “How old he? 28? He’s a really experienced player. But he’s one of them that will get to 35 and be exactly the same.
“He’ll still be doing the stupid stuff where he’s stud rolling the ball, holding people off showing how strong and skilful he is.
“The biggest thing with Paul is his concentration. He goes away with the fairies at times.”

Paul Pogba’s injury finally puts an end to an unwanted sideshow at Man Utd… thank you, and goodbye

THE fact news of Paul Pogba’s thigh injury while training with France did not make the headlines says it all.His absence for two months after this international break will not affect Manchester United’s form, one way or the other. In fact, they could be better off without him.
It will not be bad business for Man Utd to let £89m Paul Pogba leave on a free next summerCredit: PA
Pogba has been an unwanted sideshow that has too often dragged United down since the day he returned to the club in August 2016.
The Red Devils are now happy to let his contract run out next summer when he can leave on a free — again — and the circus can move on to another town.
They have grown fed up with Pogba. They just want him out.
His appalling, 15-minute cameo in last month’s 5-0 humiliation by Liverpool was the final straw.
Axed to the bench for the match, the 28-year-old midfielder came on at half-time with the score already 4-0.
Within five minutes he  had lost possession for the Scousers’ fifth goal.

Then his reckless foul on Naby Keita on the hour not only saw him receive a red card but also resulted in the  Liverpool midfielder leaving the pitch on a stretcher.
Pogba later denied SunSport’s story that he had snubbed manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. If there is proof they hugged each other and said, ‘Thanks for your efforts today’, then we would welcome it — but our information was otherwise.
Ask a United fan to name a game when they have come away gushing about a Pogba performance and they can only name one. And it was only one half of that match, too.
It was the day Manchester City were preparing to celebrate the title on April 7, 2018 — derby day.
United were 2-0 down at the break but Pogba scored twice in the second half and inspired them to a 3-2 win.
People wonder why he  cannot play for United like he did for Juventus while  winning four Serie A titles.
United believe Pogba has an entourage convincing him he is the best in the world
Well, he joined a team that were Serie A champions already, remained that for the four years he was there and the four years after he left. They were that dominant.
At United, he joined a team that needed him to lift them — and he could not do it.
He fell out with boss Jose Mourinho, who did a great job by winning the EFL Cup and Europa League in his first season in 2016-17 and then finished second in the Prem the year after.
But the Pogba rumpus did for him — and it has rumbled on ever since.
United believe Pogba has an entourage convincing him he is the best in the world.
The hangers-on are happy to portray a picture of a multiple Scudetto winner and world champion, so it has to be someone else’s fault.
He is their GOAT without any evidence on the field with United to back that up.

Witness Cristiano Ronaldo day in, day out, with every club he has served. He does not amble, he does not give up — he gets on with it.
Do not call it bad business to sign him for £89million and let him go for a free.
Bad business would be to hand him a new contract that no other club can match, so United would be stuck with him. Thank you. And goodbye.

Cristiano Ronaldo held talks over Arsenal transfer in backstreet restaurant before jumping on BUS and joining Man Utd

ARSENAL chiefs met with Cristiano Ronaldo in a backstreet restaurant to discuss the possibility of him joining the club before he agreed to sign for Manchester United. The Portuguese superstar secured his move to Old Trafford in August 2003 and would go on to score 118 goals in 292 games for the Red Devils during his first spell at the club.

But that breakthrough stint at Man Utd came after he had met with Arsenal’s former vice-chairman David Dein and the club’s chief scout.
Dein recounted the story of their meeting with Ronaldo at an event for the Twinning Project at the London Palladium on Monday.
He said: “We are now turning the clock back when Cristiano was 17 and playing in the Portuguese Under-19 team.
“He was spotted by our chief scout. Arsene [Wenger] said: ‘Look, do you want to go over and see him play?’ I said: ‘Yeah sure, I’ll go across’.
“I went with our chief scout and I remember seeing the Portuguese Under-19 team play and Cristiano did really well.
“Then the agent, who was with us at the time, said: ‘Well, believe it or not he is going to meet us for dinner afterwards’.

“We had a dinner at a sort of a curb-side restaurant. He was a really nice guy and he actually gave me his shirt. It’s one of several shirts that I’ve got hanging in my cupboard at home. He gave me his shirt that he played in.
“We discussed a little bit of money and the agent said: ‘Well, let him think about it overnight’. Then Cristiano said: ‘I’ve got to go now, my bus is going’.
“He jumped on his bus and he went home. The following day I was discussing with the agent and about six hours later Manchester United blew us out of the water.
“That was the Cristiano Ronaldo story. I think we were being used a little bit as a stalking house, because I think he was always going to go to Manchester United at the time.”
It wasn’t to be for Arsenal and Ronaldo, much to the disappointment of the Gunners as it turned out they missed out on one of football’s greatest ever players.
Ronaldo returned to Man Utd for a second spell at the club in the summer, departing Juventus after three seasons with the club.

And he has continued to find the back of the net, scoring nine times in his opening 12 games for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men.
Yet despite that goalscoring prowess, he has been unable to help United challenge for the Premier League title.
Defeats to Aston Villa, Leicester, Liverpool and Manchester City have seen them drop to sixth, nine points off table toppers Chelsea after just 11 matches. More

The Independent reports Ten Hag is reluctant to leave the reigning Dutch champions in the middle of the season.
And Tottenham wrestled with offering him a job over the summer when a move would have been simpler.
The 51-year-old has been in charge at the Johan Cruyff Arena since 2017 and is known to have the utmost respect for his employers.
Any attempts to convince him to break his contract with the Amsterdam club are likely to fall on deaf ears.

A 3-0 victory over Tottenham provided some respite but crosstown rivals City halted any momentum with Saturday’s derby win.
And Spurs may well have had the last laugh anyway after appointing Antonio Conte as their manager.
The north Londoners sacked Nuno Espirito Santo to pounce for the 52-year-old’s signature.
The Italian tactician was another name in the frame for the United job and waited until the last minute to sign his new £15million-a-year contract.
He had been waiting to see if the Red Devils would come knocking but eventually opted to take over at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Yet Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will delay a decision until after the busy Festive programme, for fear of injuries leaving United light at the back.
Two Premier League outfits – believed to be Watford and Newcastle – are keen on taking Jones on loan, with a host of interested parties from the Championship.
Wayne Rooney is a big fan, and would like him at Derby, although continued issues over Pride Park finances currently clouds their chances of loan signings in January unclear.
Solskjaer has been delighted by Jones’ attitude in training since returning from his latest knee injury last summer and would love him to get more regular football to reach match fitness.
But the United boss faces being without centre back Raphael Varane for a month, after he suffered a hamstring injury in this week’s Champions League draw at Atalanta.
And with continued issues surrounding Victor Lindelof’s overall fitness, Jones could yet find himself playing a part for United when the schedule hots up.
