MANCHESTER UNITED goalkeeper Lee Grant has announced his retirement from football after a 23-year career.The stopper, whose contract expires next month, has called time on his playing days at the age of 39 after a spending four seasons with the Red Devils.

He previously played for Derby County, Burnley, Oldham Athletic, Sheffield Wednesday and Stoke and made over 500 appearances throughout his career.
The star confirmed the news today with a brilliant 332-word statement on United’s website – despite him playing just twice for the club.
Grant said: “After 511 appearances, I’ve decided it’s the right time to move into the next stage of my career.
“There have been so many fun moments mixed in with the odd challenge, but I’m grateful for each and every one.

Grant made his debut for United in the League Cup against old club Derby in 2018 at Old Trafford.
His second, and last, outing led to him becoming United’s most senior European debutant of all time, at the age of 36 years and 305 days, when he played in the Europa League away to Astana. 

Grant’s professional bow came for the Rams back in September 2002 against Burnley.
He added: “There are too many incredible football people to thank as I’ve received untold amounts of help from so many special people over the last 23 years.
“I do however want to say a huge thank you to my family and in particular my wife, Helen, for moving around the country with me, allowing me to pursue my dream.
“Football has given me so much, but it can also be tough on partners and children. Without them it would never have been possible to achieve what I did.”
And now Grant is now planning to continue working in the game as a coach as he revealed: “As I move into the next stage of my career, I’m excited and hungry about the beginning of a new journey and the hard work that lies ahead!”

But for Man Utd in particular, Rice could be the “catalyst” for the club’s return to the glory days, says legend Ferdinand.
