Erik ten Hag wants to end Cristiano Ronaldo’s Old Trafford walk-out feud and start working with Man Utd’s ‘top striker’

ERIK TEN HAG says he wants to forget Cristiano Ronaldo’s Old Trafford walk-out and start working with the “top striker”.Ronaldo left Old Trafford before the end of the Rayo Vallecano friendly last Sunday having played the first 45 minutes.

It was something the new Manchester United boss described as “unacceptable”.
But asked about it ahead of the visit of Brighton on Sunday, he was happy to put the incident in the past.
Ten Hag said: “I think we’ve said enough on it. I said it’s not correct.
“You mention it, you correct them, then move on.

“I have to point out there were many players who left but the spotlight is on Cristiano, that is not right, He was part of it but there were a lot of players.
“I’m really happy, we have a top striker, I’m really happy he’s here with the squad and we stick to the plan.
“I’m satisfied with the whole team, we’re working good, there is a good culture and Cristiano is working really tough and hard.”
With Anthony Martial out of Sunday’s game with a hamstring injury, the door is open for Ronaldo to start the new season despite wanting out of the club and having played just one half in pre-season.

“We will see Sunday,” said Ten Hag. “I think we will have solutions to sort it out.”
Ten Hag is desperate to get a new attacker in and a midfielder, with the Frenkie de Jong saga stretching on.
But he said he is happy with the squad he has to start the season.
He said: “I’m convinced we have a good team and a good squad. We can still strengthen but the team has showed it can play at a good level.

Mark Irwin: There is only going to be one winner in Cristiano Ronaldo’s tussle with Man Utd and it won’t be Erik ten Hag

ARSENAL technical director Edu rattled every financial director in football when he claimed that paying unwanted players to leave is “an investment”.That’s quite some economic policy from a club which has delivered more golden handshakes than King Midas in recent months.
Wantaway Man Utd star Cristiano Ronaldo is sure to be the only winner from his transfer sagaCredit: Getty
Among the beneficiaries of Arsenal’s generosity have been Mesut Ozil, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Shkodran Mustafi, Sead Kolasinac and Sokratis – £150million of signings enjoying a kiss-off for outstaying their welcome.
Yet the grim reality is that rewarding failure is the lesser of two evils for all those clubs who have married at haste and been forced to repent at leisure.
Practically every team in the Premier League has had their fingers burned by a big-money signing who has dramatically failed to live up to expectations.
Danny Drinkwater, Eric Bailly, Tanguy Ndombele, Nicolas Pepe, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Cenk Tosun, Felipe Anderson, Dennis Praet, Ross Barkley, Christian Benteke… and they’re just the tip of the scrapheap.

But trying to offload those underachievers has become practically impossible now that the bottom has all but dropped out of the transfer market.
European clubs who were once happy to sign our cast-offs at a reduced price now expect to get them on loan with a vague promise of maybe paying a nominal fee some time in the distant future.
Or, better still, for absolutely nothing.
Yet even then many players are happy to sit on the sidelines wringing every last penny from their contracts.

So the only way to get rid of these “killers” is to take a leaf out of the Edu playbook and pay them to clear off.
Barcelona have tried to buck that trend by flogging Frenkie de Jong to Manchester United or Chelsea for £70m while withholding the £14.5m the player is owed in deferred wages.
But that bullying approach is doomed to failure because, one way or the other, De Jong is going to get his money before he agrees to leave.
For in this game of football poker, it’s the players who now hold all the aces.
Which brings us neatly onto Cristiano Ronaldo, currently throwing a hissy-fit because he doesn’t want to slum it in the Europa League with Man Utd.
The problem is, he still has a year of his £480,000-a-week contract to run and United don’t appear to have been inundated with offers.
New boss Erik ten Hag insists the 37-year-old GOAT still figures in his plans despite missing the pre-season tour and storming off after being hooked in a reserve game.
Which leaves United caught between a rock and a hard place.
One the one hand there is the risk of undermining Ten Hag’s authority by allowing Ronaldo to cash in on his petulance with another lucrative moment.
But the alternative is being lumbered with a sulking prima donna overshadowing everything the new manager is trying to achieve.
Either way, there is only going to be one winner. And it won’t be United.

Ronaldo made his first pre-season appearance in a 1-1 draw with Rayo Vallecano, but was subbed at half time.
And boss Erik ten Hag branded the 37-year-old’s conduct “unacceptable” after the frontman left Old Trafford before the end of Sunday’s game.
Corinthians president Duilio Monteiro Alves has now declared his ambition to bring Ronaldo over to the Portuguese-speaking nation.
The Sao Paulo club recruited ex-Chelsea and Arsenal star Willian last year, and former Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Renato Augusto is also part of their squad.

And it appeared unlikely that Ronaldo would feature as his future remains up in the air following a summer of speculation which has seen him play very little part in pre-season.
But now Erik ten Hag could be left with no choice but to play the Portuguese superstar up front as Martial is not available.
According to The Athletic, the Frenchman has suffered a minor hamstring issue which means he will not be ready for the weekend.
He trudged off the pitch holding his leg following their defeat to Atletico Madrid in Norway on Saturday.

And now it looks to have cost him ahead of Ten Hag’s first game in charge.
Ten Hag’s other options to lead the line include Marcus Rashford and Anthony Elanga – with Jadon Sancho set to miss the game through illness.
Ronaldo scored 24 goals in 38 appearances last season but that did little to stop United enduring a torrid campaign.
Now their failure to qualify for the Champions League appears to have led the five-time Ballon d’Or winner into trying to force a move.

He has been linked with a loan return to Sporting Lisbon after Chelsea and Bayern Munich ruled themselves out of the race.
There have also been rumours of a deal with Atletico Madrid, but the LaLiga giants’ fans were quick to insist he is not welcome at their club – mainly due to him being a Real Madrid legend.
Ronaldo played 45 minutes of Man Utd’s final warm-up match against Rayo Vallecano on Sunday.
But, after being substituted at half-time, he then left Old Trafford before the final whistle.

And Ten Hag condemned that sort of behaviour as tensions between United and Ronaldo increased to uncomfortable levels.

“We are a team, we are a squad and you have to stay to the end.” More

Man Utd ‘lining up Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham transfers as alternative midfield options’ if De Jong falls through

After weeks of haggling the Red Devils thought they had agreed a deal last month.
The Athletic claim that United believed they had sealed a £71million package with Barcelona on July 14, only for it to stall.
Three weeks on they are no closer to signing the 25-year-old, with other targets beginning to emerge.
The report adds that the Red Devils would like to move for Rice or Bellingham if they fail to get Ten Hag’s man.

But frustratingly for them, neither are available this summer.
West Ham have offered Rice an eight-year contract worth £93m but he has turned it down.
His current contract has two years to run, but the Hammers possess an option to extend Rice’s deal to 2025.
Bellingham’s Dortmund contract also has three years remaining.

Barca insiders believe that De Jong’s exit has been delayed by millions in unpaid wages that he is owed.
Despite transfer speculation, he played for Xavi’s side on their US tour.
Man United remain “convinced” that De Jong wants to move to Old Trafford, despite reports from Spain stating the contrary.
Chelsea are claimed to be readying a move to hijack United’s deal.
Red Devils legend Gary Neville claimed this week that his old side have been an “embarrassment” in the transfer window this summer.
He told The Overlap in association with Sky Bet: “I said this about Sancho and it’s the same now with De Jong – it gets to the point where a signing that should be an excitement for the club drags on that long that actually in the end you actually lose excitement for the signing, it almost becomes a little bit of an embarrassment.”

Should United fail to sign De Jong, Rice or Bellingham, they could swoop to sign Youri Tielemans or Ruben Neves.
The Belgian has one year remaining on his Leicester contract, while Neves’ at Wolves expires in 2024.

‘Rival clubs, Erik ten Hag, Man Utd squad… no one wants him’ – Carragher slams Cristiano Ronaldo for forcing transfer

JAMIE CARRAGHER has torn into wantaway Cristiano Ronaldo saying NONE of Erik ten Hag, Manchester United or rival clubs want him.The five-time Ballon d’Or winner, 37, has publicly stated his desire to quit Old Trafford this summer, just one year after his return from Juventus.

Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville have had their say on Cristiano Ronaldo – with the latter saying United must axe him this summer for the good of the clubCredit: Getty
Agent Jorge Mendes has put him in the shop window, but Chelsea, Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid have all rejected the chance to sign him.
Ronaldo made his return to the United first-team on Sunday when he played the first-half of the 1-1 draw with Rayo Vallecano.
But after being hauled off at half-time, the forward was spotted leaving the ground before full-time – with Ten Hag calling it “unacceptable”.
Carragher now reckons Ten Hag and the United squad no longer want him, let alone rival clubs.

Speaking with Gary Neville on The Overlap, Carragher ranted: “I always thought [Ronaldo] was a bizarre signing.
“I always felt this situation would come, even if Ronaldo did great for [United].
“He signed a two-year deal plus another year, which I couldn’t believe.

“His career has gone on longer because he’s such a great professional.
“But the fact he’s now 37, 38 this season, he’s not the same player. He’s still a great goalscorer but he’s not the same player.”
Carragher continued: “No other club in Europe at this moment wants him, I might be wrong.
“But it doesn’t look like United can get him out, so at the moment other clubs don’t want him.
“And I think if you asked Ten Hag, I don’t think he wants him.
“And I’m not quite sure the dressing room at Manchester United would want Cristiano Ronaldo right now.”
Neville went a step further and said United MUST axe Ronaldo as it’s their only option.
The ex-Red Devils skipper explained: “It’s unpalatable for me to watch, as an ex-United captain, an ex-United senior player, thinking that the star player in the dressing room is playing up.
“It happened at times over the last few years where you had Paul Pogba’s agent – not necessarily Pogba all the time but his agent – always playing up with the club.
“You can’t have your star player in a club running the shop. You cannot have it.
“We know [Ronaldo] can’t do [high pressing] – and the way in which he wants to play on the ball, I’m not sure he fits into Ten Hag’s way.
“When that statement came out that Ronaldo wants to leave and then the Monday morning I think something else came out – I’m not sure the club were even aware.
“The timing was horrific coming into the start of the season, it undermined Ten Hag straight away – it meant that Ten Hag literally has had every single press conference that he does is just obliterated by the Ronaldo issue.

“I think looking back, Pep [Guardiola], [Jurgen] Klopp, [Antonio] Conte, Sir Alex Ferguson – if a player becomes the dominating factor, and a distraction in the press conference for a manager, there’s only one thing that has to happen.

Cristiano Ronaldo will finally make Man Utd ‘Great Escape’… and I don’t blame him for wanting out, says Piers Morgan

Ronaldo is still fitter than most players, says Piers Morgan
Ronaldo’s agent, Jorge Mendes, has contacted Bayern Munich, Chelsea and Atletico Madrid over a summer move – with ALL three rejecting the veteran striker.
It speaks volumes of the former Real Madrid forward’s desire to escape the continually sinking ship that is Manchester United.
While fans have criticised Ronaldo for so openly trying to quit, Piers has revealed he doesn’t blame him – launching into a withering attack on United’s flops just days before the new season.
Piers told SunSport: “Ronaldo will extricate himself from his living nightmare at a rotting excuse for a giant global club that now bears no resemblance to the iconic place where he first cut his GOAT teeth.

“He may be 37 but he’s still fitter than most players and scored 18 Premier League goals last season, second behind joint Golden Boot winners Mo Salah and Son Heung-min.

“Without him, they’d have been fighting relegation.
“Ronaldo’s looked at the dreadfully unambitious way United’s run these days — and the woefully entitled attitude of many of the younger players — and wants to run away from this trainwreck faster than United’s fastest fan, Usain Bolt.
