A number of players have come under fire for their performance.
Midfielders Fred and Scott McTominay, in particular, have been criticised.
And United legend Ferdinand has backed summer signing Lisandro Martinez to play as a holding midfielder instead of Fred and/or McTominay in United’s next game against Brentford.
Martinez would play at the base of the diamond with Christian Eriksen and Bruno Fernandes operating in front of him.

Pushing Martinez into the midfield also allows serial Champions League winner Raphael Varane to come back into the heart of the defence alongside club captain Harry Maguire.
Ferdinand told Vibe with Five: “In my midfield, I’m going to play Martinez as the holding midfielder and take Fred out.
“I’m going to play Varane and Maguire [at centre-back].”
He added: “I wouldn’t pick McTominay or Fred. Listen, whatever happens, Man Utd will improve from the first day against Brighton. Things can only get better.”

On Martinez, he said: “He reminds me of Gabi Heinze a little bit, but he’s better on the ball.
“But Harry Kane, Erling Haaland, Darwin Nunez, Chris Wood, Aleksandar Mitrovic, Danny Welbeck… these guys, if I’m them, I go and stand on him [Martinez] when the ball is wide.
“Because of the height difference you just do it and then it’s up to him: can he deal with it?…
“Gary Neville wasn’t the tallest, but if the ball was coming across and he knows he’s got a big fella coming in behind him to smash him over the top, before the ball is even there: bang! [hit them] Put them off, they can’t head it cleanly.”
Ferdinand would also bring Cristiano Ronaldo back into the starting XI to lead the line.
Ronaldo started the Premier League season from the bench following a summer of speculation surrounding his future at Old Trafford and couldn’t save United after coming on in the second half. More

And now according to ESPN, United have been offered the chance to sign Atletico Madrid’s Morata to help bolster new boss Erik ten Hag’s attacking line.

The 6ft 4ins Slovenian signed a five-year contract with the German club which takes effect from July 1 2023 and runs until 2028.
He will spend this season with Salzburg and then make the switch to the Bundesliga at the end of the campaign.

“A special success story was written here in just a few years – and I would like to help shape it in the future.
“The club’s focus on young players and playing attractive, attacking football suits me perfectly.
“The city, the stadium and the entire infrastructure at RB Leipzig have convinced me – in addition to the many good discussions with the club officials – that the step to Leipzig is absolutely the right one.
“But now my focus is entirely on the season in Salzburg, in which I want to develop further and be as successful as possible.”

The Sesko deal comes in the week RB Leipzig are expected to complete the transfer return of Timo Werner back to the Red Bull Arena.
But it comes as another bitter blow to Erik ten Hag and his summer transfer overhaul plans.
United have signed Christian Eriksen, Lisandro Martinez and Tyrell Malacia in the current window.
However, their list of failed transfer attempts is far longer.
The club missed out on Frenkie de Jong and Antony despite long pursuits.

How Man Utd could line up this season with Mauro Arnautovic, Milinkovic-Savic and Rabiot as fans slam shock transfers

MANCHESTER UNITED have been enduring a miserable summer transfer window… and fans fear things are about to get a whole lot worse.A disastrous start in the Premier League was hardly a shock after the club’s struggles to rebuild following last season’s debacle.
How Manchester United’s line-up could look if they were relegated
The Red Devils’ campaign kicked off on a poor note as they lost 2-1 to Brighton at Old Trafford to a chorus of boos from disgruntled supporters.
The Manchester giants had raised hopes after hiring the highly-talented Erik ten Hag following a turbulent stint under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick (not to mention Jose, LVG and David Moyes).
A number of high-profile players who could turn the tide were linked with United after the Dutchman’s arrival.
The likes of Frenkie de Jong, Cody Gakpo, Erling Haaland and Darwin Nunez were all approached but nothing came of it.

So far, Ten Hag has only seen Lisandro Martinez, Christian Eriksen and Tyrell Malacia arriving at Old Trafford.
But now Adrien Rabiot is also said to be on his way from Juventus to fill in for record signing Paul Pogba, who left as a free agent.
The club also continues to be linked with Lazio ace Sergej Milinkovic-Savic as the Dutch tactician needs another midfielder to replace Nemanja Matic.
Those two may arrive as United legend Cristiano Ronaldo departs, having expressed his desire to play in the Champions League this season.

And the Red Devils’ latest solution to replace him appears to be none other than 33-year-old former West Ham and Stoke ace Marko Arnautovic.
United fans are infuriated with the hierarchy’s transfer business following the club’s worst ever Premier League campaign.
Some feel the club is so doomed that relegation is now on the cards.
One fan tweeted: “There’s never been a club this badly run. In 5 years we’ll be bankrupt and in the Championship.”

Another posted: “[United] are more likely to get relegated than to win another championship under the glazers.
A third commented: “Replacing “Toxic” players with more toxic players ffs…#mufc going to championship soon.”
This supporter said: “Arnautovic & Rabiot are the signings I expect #mufc to make. Out of nowhere, looking desperate, & cheap. They could work tho, but this club is ran by clowns. Absolutely s******w.”
That one added: “Marko Arnautovic to #MUFC better be some kind of joke.”

Finally, this fan stated: “Wtf is going? Rabiot? The club might actually be finished.”
While it might be too early to condemn the Reds to the Championship, SunSport had a look at how United might line up if they headed back to England’s second tier for the first time since the early 1970s.
Rabaiot, Arnautovic and Milinkovic-Savic are all there… but a certain No7 appears to be long gone. More

Why exactly does Erik ten Hag want Adrien Rabiot transfer as stats show Man Utd target is WORSE than McFred?

MANCHESTER UNITED are reportedly closing in on a move for Juventus midfielder Adrien Rabiot.Erik ten Hag lost Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic over the summer and is keen to bring in reinforcements during the transfer window to join holding midfielders Scott McTominay and Fred.

How Rabiot shapes up compared to McTominay and Fred over the past two seasons
But statistics which have now emerged show that Rabiot is far from the answer.
They even highlight how the Frenchman would be a downgrade from what McTominay and Fred offer the club.
Since September 2020, Rabiot has played 66 matches – three more than McTominay and seven more than Fred.
Yet his contribution to Juventus has been outdone by the United pair in so many areas.
    READ MORE ON MAN UTD
He has scored four goals in that period – one fewer than Ten Hag’s midfield duo who started in the defeat to Brighton.
He does have two more assists than McTominay, but Fred still matches him.
And from then on the stats only get worse for the France international – who previously played for Paris Saint-Germain.
He has created just 31 chances – nine less than McTominay and 22 fewer than Fred.

Fred has made over 700 more passes since September 2020, with McTominay also outperforming Rabiot.
The Juventus man has won fewer fouls than both and also has less touches.
But perhaps the most damning one for United fans will be the number of possessions won.
Ten Hag will be keen to see his defensive midfielders retrieving the ball with consistent regularity.

With that in mind, Rabiot clearly is not the man as he has won possession 133 fewer times than Fred and 33 less than McTominay.
One way he does eclipse McTominay is in the number of tackles he has made – 136 to 116 – but Fred still gets the better of Rabiot there too as he has made 144.
There is no clear way Rabiot improves Man Utd and that has to be a worry for fans of the club as they continue to hear reports about a £15million deal growing closer.

Adrien Rabiot ‘believes he’s sure to start in weak Man Utd midfield as he seeks transfer to make France World Cup squad’

ADRIEN RABIOT believes he is sure to start in Manchester United’s “weak midfield” as he bids to make France’s World Cup squad, according to reports. The 27-year-old appears to be drawing closer to a move to Old Trafford as Erik ten Hag looks to beef up his under-fire midfield.

Fred and Scott McTominay started Sunday’s disappointing defeat to Brighton, a pairing that has often been criticised by United fans.
Reports from France suggest that Rabiot believes he can walk straight into United’s midfield.
This is crucial for the Frenchman, who is looking to break into France’s squad for the World Cup in Qatar.
L’Equipe report that Rabiot sees United as giving him the opportunity to “muscle in” on Didier Deschamps’ team selection.

They claim that he sees his place in Ten Hag’s team as “almost guaranteed” due to his “weak” competition.
The claim comes following Rabiot’s exclusion from the main World Cup squad in 2018, as his boss instead tried to place him on the reserve list.
Rabiot controversially then refused to be on the reserve list and withdrew from it.
The midfielder is believed to have since patched things up with Deschamps and is fighting to be included this time round.
