And it appeared unlikely that Ronaldo would feature as his future remains up in the air following a summer of speculation which has seen him play very little part in pre-season.
But now Erik ten Hag could be left with no choice but to play the Portuguese superstar up front as Martial is not available.
According to The Athletic, the Frenchman has suffered a minor hamstring issue which means he will not be ready for the weekend.
He trudged off the pitch holding his leg following their defeat to Atletico Madrid in Norway on Saturday.

And now it looks to have cost him ahead of Ten Hag’s first game in charge.
Ten Hag’s other options to lead the line include Marcus Rashford and Anthony Elanga – with Jadon Sancho set to miss the game through illness.
Ronaldo scored 24 goals in 38 appearances last season but that did little to stop United enduring a torrid campaign.
Now their failure to qualify for the Champions League appears to have led the five-time Ballon d’Or winner into trying to force a move.

He has been linked with a loan return to Sporting Lisbon after Chelsea and Bayern Munich ruled themselves out of the race.
There have also been rumours of a deal with Atletico Madrid, but the LaLiga giants’ fans were quick to insist he is not welcome at their club – mainly due to him being a Real Madrid legend.
Ronaldo played 45 minutes of Man Utd’s final warm-up match against Rayo Vallecano on Sunday.
But, after being substituted at half-time, he then left Old Trafford before the final whistle.

And Ten Hag condemned that sort of behaviour as tensions between United and Ronaldo increased to uncomfortable levels.
Asked whether leaving a match prior to the end was acceptable, the Red Devils head coach said: “Absolutely not. It is unacceptable. I’ve told them this – that it’s unacceptable.
“We are a team, we are a squad and you have to stay to the end.” More

Man Utd ‘lining up Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham transfers as alternative midfield options’ if De Jong falls through

After weeks of haggling the Red Devils thought they had agreed a deal last month.
The Athletic claim that United believed they had sealed a £71million package with Barcelona on July 14, only for it to stall.
Three weeks on they are no closer to signing the 25-year-old, with other targets beginning to emerge.
The report adds that the Red Devils would like to move for Rice or Bellingham if they fail to get Ten Hag’s man.

But frustratingly for them, neither are available this summer.
West Ham have offered Rice an eight-year contract worth £93m but he has turned it down.
His current contract has two years to run, but the Hammers possess an option to extend Rice’s deal to 2025.
Bellingham’s Dortmund contract also has three years remaining.

Barca insiders believe that De Jong’s exit has been delayed by millions in unpaid wages that he is owed.
Despite transfer speculation, he played for Xavi’s side on their US tour.
Man United remain “convinced” that De Jong wants to move to Old Trafford, despite reports from Spain stating the contrary.
Chelsea are claimed to be readying a move to hijack United’s deal.
Red Devils legend Gary Neville claimed this week that his old side have been an “embarrassment” in the transfer window this summer.
He told The Overlap in association with Sky Bet: “I said this about Sancho and it’s the same now with De Jong – it gets to the point where a signing that should be an excitement for the club drags on that long that actually in the end you actually lose excitement for the signing, it almost becomes a little bit of an embarrassment.”

Should United fail to sign De Jong, Rice or Bellingham, they could swoop to sign Youri Tielemans or Ruben Neves.
The Belgian has one year remaining on his Leicester contract, while Neves’ at Wolves expires in 2024.

And Telles sent a heartwarming farewell message to United fans on social media.
He said: “To everyone at United: colleagues, staff, fans. I will be supporting and cheering you on all season.

“Thanks for the moments so far.”
Telles was surplus to requirements at United with new boss Erik ten Hag already starting to shape the squad in his own image.

Both players would provide competition and cover for long-term servant Luke Shaw.
Telles joined United from Porto for £15.8million in 2020.
He made just 26 appearances last season, netting once in the Champions League and providing four assists in the Premier League.

‘Rival clubs, Erik ten Hag, Man Utd squad… no one wants him’ – Carragher slams Cristiano Ronaldo for forcing transfer

JAMIE CARRAGHER has torn into wantaway Cristiano Ronaldo saying NONE of Erik ten Hag, Manchester United or rival clubs want him.The five-time Ballon d’Or winner, 37, has publicly stated his desire to quit Old Trafford this summer, just one year after his return from Juventus.

Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville have had their say on Cristiano Ronaldo – with the latter saying United must axe him this summer for the good of the clubCredit: Getty
Agent Jorge Mendes has put him in the shop window, but Chelsea, Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid have all rejected the chance to sign him.
Ronaldo made his return to the United first-team on Sunday when he played the first-half of the 1-1 draw with Rayo Vallecano.
But after being hauled off at half-time, the forward was spotted leaving the ground before full-time – with Ten Hag calling it “unacceptable”.
Carragher now reckons Ten Hag and the United squad no longer want him, let alone rival clubs.

Speaking with Gary Neville on The Overlap, Carragher ranted: “I always thought [Ronaldo] was a bizarre signing.
“I always felt this situation would come, even if Ronaldo did great for [United].
“He signed a two-year deal plus another year, which I couldn’t believe.
“He’s never going to play second fiddle to anyone but as players at a certain stage in your career we all know that you’re not the same player.

“His career has gone on longer because he’s such a great professional.
“But the fact he’s now 37, 38 this season, he’s not the same player. He’s still a great goalscorer but he’s not the same player.”
Carragher continued: “No other club in Europe at this moment wants him, I might be wrong.
“But it doesn’t look like United can get him out, so at the moment other clubs don’t want him.
“And I think if you asked Ten Hag, I don’t think he wants him.
“And I’m not quite sure the dressing room at Manchester United would want Cristiano Ronaldo right now.”
Neville went a step further and said United MUST axe Ronaldo as it’s their only option.
The ex-Red Devils skipper explained: “It’s unpalatable for me to watch, as an ex-United captain, an ex-United senior player, thinking that the star player in the dressing room is playing up.
“It happened at times over the last few years where you had Paul Pogba’s agent – not necessarily Pogba all the time but his agent – always playing up with the club.
“You can’t have your star player in a club running the shop. You cannot have it.
“We know [Ronaldo] can’t do [high pressing] – and the way in which he wants to play on the ball, I’m not sure he fits into Ten Hag’s way.
“When that statement came out that Ronaldo wants to leave and then the Monday morning I think something else came out – I’m not sure the club were even aware.
“The timing was horrific coming into the start of the season, it undermined Ten Hag straight away – it meant that Ten Hag literally has had every single press conference that he does is just obliterated by the Ronaldo issue.

“I think looking back, Pep [Guardiola], [Jurgen] Klopp, [Antonio] Conte, Sir Alex Ferguson – if a player becomes the dominating factor, and a distraction in the press conference for a manager, there’s only one thing that has to happen.
    “We all know it.” More

Cristiano Ronaldo will finally make Man Utd ‘Great Escape’… and I don’t blame him for wanting out, says Piers Morgan

CRISTIANO RONALDO has been tipped to finally escape Manchester United, by pal Piers Morgan. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner, 37, has been vocal in his desire to quit Old Trafford after the club’s 2021-22 horror show.

Ronaldo is still fitter than most players, says Piers Morgan
Ronaldo’s agent, Jorge Mendes, has contacted Bayern Munich, Chelsea and Atletico Madrid over a summer move – with ALL three rejecting the veteran striker.
It speaks volumes of the former Real Madrid forward’s desire to escape the continually sinking ship that is Manchester United.
While fans have criticised Ronaldo for so openly trying to quit, Piers has revealed he doesn’t blame him – launching into a withering attack on United’s flops just days before the new season.
Piers told SunSport: “Ronaldo will extricate himself from his living nightmare at a rotting excuse for a giant global club that now bears no resemblance to the iconic place where he first cut his GOAT teeth.
    READ MORE SPORT STORIES
“He may be 37 but he’s still fitter than most players and scored 18 Premier League goals last season, second behind joint Golden Boot winners Mo Salah and Son Heung-min.
“Yet pathetic media snipers have blamed HIM for United’s woes which is utter nonsense.
“Without him, they’d have been fighting relegation.
“Ronaldo’s looked at the dreadfully unambitious way United’s run these days — and the woefully entitled attitude of many of the younger players — and wants to run away from this trainwreck faster than United’s fastest fan, Usain Bolt.

    “I don’t blame him.”
And Piers wasn’t holding back as he tore into United’s flops ahead of the new season.
When asked who he believed would be the biggest failures of the season, Piers bluntly continued: “Manchester United.
“The biggest bunch of overpaid, under-performing wastrels in Premier League history will have another terrible season.
“So much expensive talent but so little dedication, commitment or pride in wearing those world-famous shirts.
“New manager Erik ten Hag talks a good game.

Man Utd ‘can’t attract the best players any more’, says club legend Dwight Yorke as De Jong continues to snub them

MANCHESTER UNITED’S lack of success has ensured they can no longer attract the world’s top players, according to Dwight Yorke. The former Red Devils striker, 50, has launched into a withering assault on his old club.

Frenkie de Jong is refusing to join Man Utd and Yorke reckons it’s because they’re no longer desirable for top players due to their lack of Champions League footballCredit: Getty
United finished sixth in the Premier League last season and were closer to the relegation zone than champions Manchester City, in terms of points.
And Yorke – now manager of A-League side Macarthur FC – reckons a sizeable gap has opened up between United and rivals Liverpool and City.
Erik ten Hag has been desperately chasing midfielder Frenkie de Jong this summer.
Despite United agreeing to a £71.5million transfer fee with Barcelona, the Dutch midfielder has snubbed the club as he demands to stay at the Nou Camp or move to a more successful club.

And Yorke has now told safebettingsites.com: “I had a conversation with Frenkie De Jong at the A-League All Star game in May, and you know before that would’ve been a done deal.
“He’s playing with a massive club and even though the money is an issue he has the opportunity to play Champions League football there.
“The players we are chasing are in such powerful positions it’s very difficult to lure them away to come to United.
“The club have kicked themselves in the teeth and can’t attract the best players any more.

“No Champions League football is a serious issue and it’s getting more and more difficult by the year.
“Players and agents are looking from the outside and thinking ‘that is not the place I want to be right now with all that stuff going on’.
“So we need to get that turned around and get the club back on track.”
United are on their worst trophy drought in 50 years, having last tasted success in the 2017 Europa League final.
And Yorke reckons that hasn’t helped them in the transfer market – with City and Liverpool far more attractive.
He continued: “United have always been in a position of strength being among the top European teams.
“So ‘selling’ United to top players has never really been an issue.
“But what’s transpired in the last three to five years is that United are failing to do what they have become accustomed to, which was qualifying for the Champions League and winning major trophies.
“Choosing between the United of old and the current United it’s quite straightforward.
“Going after players who are hesitant to come into the club… it’s a kind of a no-brainer really.
“When you’re not qualifying for the Champions League you’re always on the back foot.

“There’s no question that the club has got some issues, they’ve just had their worst season since the Premier League started.
“The situation is carrying on into this season because their best player, Cristiano Ronaldo, is not committing himself even though he’s got another year left on his contract and he’s telling the club he wants to leave.” More

Newcastle are outsiders for the 13-cap Slovenian, who Salzburg still hope to keep for another season as they hold out for £55million-plus.
Fabrizio Romano claims Sesko’s agent Elvis Basanovic has held ‘direct’ talks with United at least twice and met Chelsea chiefs last week.

But that could change if one of the clubs launches a huge formal offer for him.

Upon hearing of United’s interest, they posted a deal could go through… if the Red Devils handed over £300m and midfielder Bruno Fernandes.

Sesko’s agent Elvis Basanovic reckons the teenager is BETTER than Haaland – at least as a team player and for technique.
Basanovic told Zurnal 24: “Many compare him to Haaland, but I think they are different types of players.
“They are similar in physical construction and speed, but they are different players. Benjamin is more of a team player.
