But the former Ajax boss is refusing to give up on signing his fellow Dutchman, much to the frustration of Red Devils legend Rio Ferdinand.
Ferdinand said on his Vibe with Five podcast: “We’re almost whoring ourselves out for this player.
“For three months in the transfer window, with our cap out begging, ‘please come to us, please come to us’.
De Jong, 25, is determined to stay at Barca to re-coup the wages he missed out on during the height of the pandemic, even though the club had reportedly agreed a £72m fee with United last month.

“He’s come in under false pretences. He’s come in expecting new signings.
“He’s probably sitting there thinking, ‘I’ve been sold a dummy here. I didn’t know I was coming into this’. Confidence, I know, was going to be low.
“He knew that but he thought ‘I’ll be able to rebuild that’, but obviously the players are not at the standard required. Simple as that.
‘Some of the players will sit there and go ‘that’s out of order, you can’t talk’, – it’s a fact! The results tell you that.

As quoted by Alfredo Pedulla, he said: “Is Cristiano Ronaldo leaving United? Lucky him.
“We didn’t give him a thought, these great players don’t come in a newly promoted one (team).”
Monza, a club in the Lombardy region of Italy, won promotion to Serie A for the first time in their history after winning the play-offs in Serie B last season.
And despite humble origins it has not stopped them from aiming digs towards some of the most well-established clubs in world football.

Ronaldo was apart of the United team which fell to a crushing 4-0 defeat to Brentford on Saturday.
An early error from the experienced David de Gea sucked all belief out of Erik ten Hag’s squad, before De Gea gifted another goal to The Bees when he passed the ball to an under pressure Christian Eriksen.
Two more goals followed swiftly after, with the rout being completed within 35 minutes following a stunning counter-attack from Brentford.
Dutch coach Ten Hag made three changes at half-time to try and engineer a comeback, to no avail, with the fallout after the game causing a HEATED debate between Gary Neville and Jamie Redknapp.

Ronaldo, 37, continues to be linked with a transfer away from Old Trafford this summer.
He sat down for showdown talks with new boss Erik ten Hag and agent Jorge Mendes when he returned to Carrington last month.
Ronaldo wants to play Champions League football and compete for the top honours in the game – something not currently on offer with the shambles at United.
According to reporter Tancredi Palmeri, the forward’s name was put to the two San Siro clubs.

However, he adds neither side were willing to explore the possibility of landing the five-time Ballon d’Or winner.
Inter boast Romelu Lukaku, Lautaro Martinez and Edin Dzeko as strikers while Serie A champs AC have Ante Rebic, Olivier Giroud, Divock Origi and, when he returns from surgery, Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
Moves to Chelsea, Atletico Madrid, Bayern Munich, Sporting Lisbon and Corinthians have all been reported but not come to fruition for Ronaldo this summer.
And so after being brought back in to start in the humiliation at Brentford on Saturday – with less than three weeks of the window remaining – it looks like he may be staying put after all.

The Portugal captain was visibly furious with goalkeeper David de Gea after his pair of calamitous howlers to gift Brentford an early 2-0 lead.
And his mood was no better come full-time as he stormed down the tunnel, ignoring the away fans and Ten Hag.

Man Utd transfer target Frenkie de Jong ‘best player’ on pitch in Barcelona draw but Spanish press still slam him

FRENKIE DE JONG was hailed as Barcelona’s best player after their 0-0 draw with Rayo Vallecano – but the Spanish media still slated the midfielder.De Jong’s been at the centre of a transfer battle between Manchester United and Chelsea this summer.

But the Spanish media wanted to know why it’s taken the midfielder three years to start performing with Chelsea and Man United chasing himCredit: Reuters
Both Prem sides have been keen on recruiting the Dutch ace who hasn’t shared their enthusiasm over a move.
Despite the Prem pair’s resistance, De Jong’s made it clear he wants to stay with Barca and fight for his place.
Although he’s embroiled in a wages row with the Catalan giants who are demanding De Jong takes a 50 per cent pay cut if he wants to stay at the Nou camp – which he is allegedly refusing to do.
But the 25-year-old pushed all his personal issues to the back of his mind when he came on the pitch for Barca on the hour mark on Saturday night.

Despite being unable to break the deadlock against Vallecano, former Barca star Luis Garcia reckons De Jong was the club’s best player.
Garica waxed lyrical after the game: “The best one (on the pitch).
“I think he showed today, he wanted to show , “listen, I’m here, I wanted to do something, look what I can bring [to] the table.
“He definitely was one of the best players in the second half.”

But the Spanish press weren’t impressed and questioned why De Jong’s hasn’t played at the same level in the past three years.
Mundo Deportivo wrote: “If Frenkie de Jong ends up leaving for Manchester United or Chelsea in these two remaining weeks of August, one will have to wonder why he did not compete in his first three seasons with the determination he is displaying now.
“It seems that feeling cornered by the club for financial reasons has freed the best Frenkie de Jong , the one who only saw the light on a few occasions. It’s all or nothing for him, he no longer has anything to lose.”
However, Barca fans still seem to revere De Jong and gave him a resounding applause when he came on the pitch.
And Marca suggest the warm gesture shows supporters still want him at the club.
It’s a far cry from when Barca’s fickle fans were hurling abuse at De Jong just days ago amid his wage dispute. More

United ended their interest in the Austria international following a fierce backlash to the deal on social media, which Prem legend Shearer reckons the club tried to gauge before submitting a bid.
Speaking on Match of the Day after United’s embarrassing defeat to Brentford on Saturday, he said: “Is that the best that they can perform, last weekend and this weekend? Absolutely not.
“I’m convinced someone from Man United leaked the story linking them with Marko Arnautovic just to see what the reaction was.
“The reaction was that bad they then had to pull out. I’m pretty convinced that was [leaked].”

Shearer reckons United’s bizarre pursuit of Arnautovic is an indictment of how far the club has fallen in the last ten years.
The pundit continued: “I think that pretty much sums up where Manchester United are. They’re in a mess.”
Shearer believes the Glazer family will have to dig deep into their own pockets to turn things around on and off the pitch.
The Premier League’s all-time leading goalscorer added: “It’ll take time and it’ll take an unbelievable amount of money to get this right inside the football club and in terms of the right recruitment.

Damning stats show ‘lazy’ Man Utd’s shambolic running with dismal 101 record beaten leaving them bottom of Prem

MANCHESTER UNITED are looking run-down – judging by amazing stats after their 4-0 shaming at Brentford. And boss Erik ten Hag should tell his flops to jog on – unless they improve on their staggering lack of energy in Saturday’s debacle.
Erik ten Hag has much more to worry about than he would surely have thought possible after taking over Man Utd in the summerCredit: Alamy
This match summary makes gruesome reading for Man Utd management and fans
No United boss has lost his first two matches in charge since John Chapman in November 1921.
And after shipping four first-half away goals for the only time in the Premier League, the Red Devils are bottom for the first occasion since August 21 1992.
But the most astonishing stat could be the mis-match between Brentford and United in distance covered.
The Bees amassed 109.4km of movement, way ahead of the 95.6km run up by the Red Devils.

Considering the average Prem player runs 10.14km a game, you can see why the totals from the Community Stadium might now be regularly trotted out at United training.
And it’s not just distance covered where Ten Hag’s men were dramatically second best for mobility.
Sky Sports’ figures showed Brentford players produced 90 sprints in total – one a minute –  whereas United mustered just 65.
The Bees also pressed 21 times in the final third of the pitch – exactly three times more than the Red Devils.
    Most read in Football
Not bad for a £55million team in their second Prem season against a £425m side backed by a glorious history.
No wonder it’s the first time United have launched a campaign with back-to-back losses since the Prem opened in 1992-93.
In fact, the Red Devils have now lost four top-flight matches in a row – unheard of since February 1979
Before Saturday, only Spurs in October 2020 and Liverpool 12 months later had bagged four top-flight goals  before the break against United.
And the Bees did it inside 35 minutes from their first four shots on target.
And so dire is the Red Devils’ situation, two facts from the weekend have taken stats-lovers back nine decades.
United have suffered seven successive away league defeats – unmatched since they lost 10 on the bounce from September to December 1936.
But it’s only fitting that the final figure is as much a tribute to Brentford as it is an indictment of the Red Devils.
The Bees’ victory margin was their biggest in the top flight since beating Grimsby Town 6-1 in April 1938.
Grim, indeed, for Ten Hag. More

The Red Devils defence crumbled in West London and the howlers kept coming as each goal added to Erik ten Hag’s woes.
De Gea, 31, faced the media afterwards and said sorry for “costing” the Red Devils three points.
He told Sky Sports: “I’m just taking my responsibility today. I think I cost three points for my team today to be honest. It was a poor performance from myself.
“After the first mistake and second it was tough for the team to keep playing. It was a horrible day. ”

A routine save fell through De Gea’s hands in the first half to reward the Bees with an opener.
Jay Dasilva hit a speculative shot from distance and the goalkeeper remarkably managed to let it nestle into the bottom corner.
Then just minutes later, De Gea presented Christian Eriksen with a dangerous pass out from the back, leading straight to the second.
The United shot-stopper unravelled in front of Brentford’s dogged front line.

“We are not like other teams. They concede one goal and they win 5-1 or 6-1. It doesn’t matter if they make that mistake.
