Sir Alex Ferguson QUIT as Man Utd manager days before Treble season in huge row with board before history-making U-turn

SIR ALEX FERGUSON sensationally QUIT as Manchester United manager just days before the start of the Treble-winning season. In a stunning twist of events following the 1997/98 season, Ferguson resigned from his position at Old Trafford before taking it back up.

It came after the United board at the time, comprising of then-chairman Martin Edwards and Sir Roland Smith, chairman of the club’s PLC board, expressed their doubts over Ferguson’s focus.
The inside story, revealed by The Times, was the season after United lost out on the league title by a single point to Arsenal, after winning four of the previous five seasons.
Ahead of the new season Edwards and Smith told Ferguson: “We are worried about your focus.”
Their fears of this came from talk at the time of Ferguson revelling in his “celebrity status” and his passion for horse racing.

Ferguson, perplexed with the line of questioning, directly questioned whether they were trying to force him out of the club – to which he was assured it was nothing of the sort.
Transfers were also a hotly debated topic within the club’s hierarchy, with Ferguson pushing for the signing of Dwight Yorke despite doubts from assistant Brian Kidd and other members of the United board.
Following the meeting, Edwards wrote a letter for Ferguson upon his return to pre-season training outlining all the concerns the board had.
Edwards then revealed that within hours Ferguson stormed into the office raging and declaring he was going to resign: “The language Alex used was a little bit more fruity, but that was the basic gist of it.

“Well, if that’s the way you feel, Alex, we’ll have to accept it,” Edwards replied, confident of calling the former Aberdeen manager’s bluff.
Fortunately for United, the bluff worked and Ferguson withdrew his application later in the day.
Gordon Strachan described Ferguson as being “driven by anger,” and following the butting of heads at the start of the season Ferguson was full of it.

And it paid dividends as United won an unprecedented Treble that year – a feat yet to be replicated in English football.
United also went on to win the next three Premier League titles, another feat which is yet to be replicated by a club or manager other than Ferguson’s United.

Man Utd ready to sell James Garner amid transfer interest from five Premier League clubs including Tottenham

MANCHESTER UNITED have reportedly decided to sell youngster James Garner.The highly-rated Red Devils youngster has spent the best part of two seasons on loan at Nottingham Forest, helping secure promotion to the Prem.

The Athletic report that the Red Devils are open to offers for the 21-year-old with several Prem rivals interested.
Tottenham, Everton, Southampton and Leeds are all said to be keen on Garner, with Forest uncertain after recruiting heavily.
The value expected by Old Trafford bosses is reported to be between £14m and £20m.
The England youth team prospect went on the club’s pre-season tour to Thailand and Australia.

However, he wasn’t able to impress Erik ten Hag after picking up a minor injury.
He has since been an unused substitute in the demoralising defeats against Brighton and Brentford.
It is disappointing for the starlet, who impressed at Forest last term under Steve Cooper.
He made 49 appearances for Steve Cooper’s side, scoring four goals and providing eight assists.

Garner is no longer willing to play second fiddle to others, insisting he plans to build on the progress he made at the City Ground.
Speaking to The Mail, he said: “I had a really good season last season – full of confidence, full of experience. The experience I didn’t have, I feel that now I do have.
“I played in some big pressure games and I just think it’s a new and improved me. It was almost as perfect a loan experience that I could possibly have had.
“I played pretty much every single game, played well and ended up winning promotion. For me, it’s probably the perfect loan.
“I’ve had two full seasons now where I’ve played pretty much back-to-back every week, two or three times a week.
“So, for me not to do that now I think would be a step back in my career and that’s something I don’t really want to do at the moment.” More

According to the Sunday Times, initial talks between the player and the French side were positive.
As a result, PSG plan to table a mega contract for Rashford before the transfer window closes on September 1.
And they will do their best to land the man who knocked them out of the Champions League with a 94th-minute penalty in 2019.
The report adds new PSG sporting director Luis Campos reckons Rashford’s progression has been halted by the inconsistency at Old Trafford.

Rashford, 24, has already played under five managers since bursting on to the scene in February 2016.
The 46-cap Three Lions man has been deployed across the front line but has failed to nail down a set position.
Campos – who has been credited for much of the recruitment success at Monaco and Lille in recent years – said in January 2021: “Manchester United has always been one of the best academies in the world.
“Rashford is one of the best players in the world.”

His struggles in front of goal have coincided with the Red Devils’ recent woes, scoring just eight Premier League goals since the start of 2021.
Rashford, who has not featured at all for England since the Euro 2020 final, played the full 90 minutes of Saturday’s 4-0 humiliation at Brentford.
United may be in disarray and cannot offer Champions League football like PSG.
But they are determined not to sell one of their star assets – valued at a whopping £120million – and plan to extend his contract beyond next summer.
    ‘PART OF OUR PLANS’
Boss Erik ten Hag said: “He’s really important, you have seen from the first day I’m here, I’m really happy with him.
“I don’t want to lose him, he’s definitely in our plans at Manchester United.”
By comparison, his counterpart at the Parc des Princes confirmed his side want another attacker to add to Mbappe, Neymar and Lionel Messi with Mauro Icardi not wanted.
Christophe Galtier admitted: “We wish the arrival of a new striker.
“With a very busy calendar until November 13, plus the World Cup, obviously we wish this arrival.

“I know that the club will not take and pile up a player, it must be a real added value and the club is working in this direction.
“Whether by the end of the transfer window an offensive player will arrive I cannot confirm, but the club is working hard on this.”

Talks between United and Rabiot’s mother Veronique – who acts as his agent – have been ongoing since De Jong’s snub late last month.
And it’s claimed both parties have come to an agreement.
