Frenkie de Jong saga finally over with Man Utd and Chelsea snubbed by Barcelona midfielder who ‘never wavered’ on choice

THE Frenkie de Jong transfer saga is finally over – with the Barcelona midfielder staying put. The Dutchman, 25, was a high priority on the transfer wish lists for Manchester United and Chelsea throughout the summer.

Barcelona were open to selling the ex-Ajax man with a fee of around £73million agreed with the Red Devils and a £350,000-a-week contract on the table.
However, De Jong snubbed United because he did not want to sign for the Europa League club while Chelsea, despite being able to offer Champions League football, were also unable to secure a deal.
As reported by Fabrizio Romano, De Jong “never changed his mind” on his desire to stay at the Nou Camp.
The 44-cap Netherlands international joined Barca in 2019 for £65m and expressed his delight at playing for his dream club.

However, the LaLiga giants – who already owe him millions in deferred wages – slapped him with an ultimatum to either leave or take a major pay cut.
But despite the financial problems, Barcelona and De Jong appear to have repaired the damage to the relationship.
The star, under contract until 2026, has featured in all three league games so far this season – albeit starting just once.
Barca face Bayern Munich, Inter Milan and Viktoria Plzen in a brutal Champions League group.

After it became clear he would miss out on De Jong, new Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag turned his attention to Barca’s rival Real Madrid and splashed up to £70m on Casemiro to bolster his midfield instead.
Christian Eriksen has also arrived at Old Trafford and Chelsea signed Carney Chukwuemeka.
Ross Barkley was released while Billy Gilmour is poised for a £9m transfer to Brighton, leaving Thomas Tuchel short on midfield options.
But reports suggest Denis Zakaria is having a medical in Turin over a loan move from Juventus. More

It is reported United will get an initial £9million for the Englishman – with a possible £6.5m in add-ons.
But supporters hit out at the club amid suggestions there is no option to bring the talented midfielder back should he succeed at Goodison.
They were unanimous in their fury at letting the exciting young talent go for good despite his age and potential.
Kongti said: “Selling James Garner to Everton for just £9million with no buy-back clause!! United are c**p at doing business.”

Mahir commented: “No buy-back clause for Garner and sold at the worst price possible.”

Garner – born on Merseyside – joined the Red Devils at U8s way back in 2009.
He progressed through the academy, transitioning from centre-back to central midfield.
The rising star has just two substitute Premier League appearances for United totalling ten minutes of action.
He spent the first half of the 2020-21 season on loan at Watford before impressing for a year and a half at Nottingham Forest, helping them to promotion back into the Premier League.

And according to the Metro, manager David Moyes has had a late inquiry over Wan-Bissaka knocked back by Manchester United.
They claim Ten Hag is a fan of the 24-year-old and wants to keep him as “back up” for Diogo Dalot.
It’s unknown how much West Ham were reportedly willing to pay the Red Devils for the former England Under-21 international.
Wan-Bissaka was United’s first-choice right-back for two seasons following his £50million arrival from Crystal Palace in the summer of 2019.

But he’s yet to impress Ten Hag enough to be handed a starting berth this season, with his sole appearance lasting a meagre four minutes.
Ten Hag, however, is a self-professed fan of the wingback – who he insists will feature plenty this season.
The Dutchman said this week: “Aaron showed in the past that he is a constant factor at United. I have trust in him.
“I haven’t seen him that much because he was injured in pre-season.

How Man Utd could line up against Leicester with Cristiano Ronaldo ‘in squad’ after failing to seal transfer exit

MANCHESTER UNITED look set to have Cristiano Ronaldo as part of their squad against Leicester City tonight. The Red Devils head to the Foxes looking for a third-consecutive Premier League victory.

Erik ten Hag will not want to tinker with a winning team too muchCredit: The Sun
The Portuguese star has been trying to secure a move from Old Trafford all summer – but a deadline day exit now looks increasingly unlikely after he was allegedly spotted earlier on the team bus travelling to the King Power.
Meanwhile, it looks unlikely that £85.5 million new boy Antony, who has arrived from Ajax, will feature.
This is due to Antony needing both a visa and a work permit having made the switch from Ajax.
David De Gea will continue in goal for Erik ten Hag’s side after bouncing back from his Brentford nightmare.

The Dutch boss is also unlikely to want to change a winning formula in defence.
That means Diogo Dalot, Raphael Varane, Lisandro Martinez and Tyrell Malacia are nailed on to retain their places.
But it’s in midfield where things start getting exciting for United.
Christian Eriksen and Bruno Fernandes have proved their worth so far and are likely to play.

But the match could see new £70million anchorman Casemiro make his full debut after coming off the bench in the win at Southampton.
As for the attack, Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford are sure to lead the way after impressing against the Saints.
Anthony Elanga is available and looks set to continue should Antony be unavailable, but Anthony Martial is still a doubt due to his Achilles problem.
But United have plenty of other options if they want to change things up.
With midweek fixtures coming thick and fast, Ten Hag could decide to shake things up entirely.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Victor Lindelof, Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw are also desperate for starts.
And a different midfield could also see Scott McTominay, Fred and Donny van de Beek get the chance to impress. More

Man Utd new boy Antony’s £85.5m transfer fee is enormous, but under mentor Ten Hag he can be a Premier League success

THE Olympic football tournament is a big deal in Brazil. But with South America having only two places, qualification is not easy.Brazil failed to make the cut in 1992 and 2004, for example, and they had to sweat on their place in the Tokyo games.
Man Utd manager Erik ten Hag and Antony have been reunited at Old TraffordCredit: Getty
The qualification tournament was played at the start of 2020, not long before the coronavirus pandemic shook the world, and Brazil went into their final game, against Argentina, still needing a win.
It was a time for big decisions – and the coach opted to leave out the team’s star winger, Antony of Sao Paulo.
It proved to be the right choice. Brazil got the victory they needed, and their attack functioned better without the services of a player who, though clearly talented, was very raw.
Left footed but operating on the right flank, Antony kept receiving the ball and then cutting in on to his stronger side, slowing the team’s rhythm and giving the opposing defence time to get organised.
    Read more in sport
He had every right not to be the finished article. Antony was still a teenager. There was plenty of work to do – and much of it ended up taking place with Ajax.
In mid 2020 Antony swapped Sao Paulo for Amsterdam, and began a relationship with Erik ten Hag.
The 22-year-old winger is a greatly improved version of his teenage self, and the new Manchester United boss is surely entitled to some of the credit.
Where once he was a raw talent, now he looks like a footballer. He can operate on either wing, and wherever he goes his choice of option is far better than before. His weaker right foot has developed.
    Most read in Football

He can now go outside to the byeline or cut in from either side, he is much more aware of what is around him and he can also work back behind the line of the ball.
The player left out of the vital qualifier ended up being an important part of the team that won Olympic gold in Tokyo last year – the fact that the Games were postponed for a year certainly worked to his benefit, and he has since been promoted to the senior Brazil squad.
With Raphinha imperious on one flank and Vinicius Junior racing down the other, these are not easy times for a winger to break into the Brazil team.
But in the chances he has been given off the bench Antony has done extremely well.
It is hardly surprising, then, that Ten Hag wanted to take the player with him to Old Trafford. Indeed, the move became a strong possibility from the moment that the Dutchman was chosen to take over at Manchester United.
With the club’s tradition of dashing wing-play, plus the personal relationship with Ten Hag, Antony looks like a player ready to pull on the famous red shirt.
Ten Hag helped Antony develop at AjaxCredit: Getty
At a price. The problem here is the fortune United already spent bringing in Argentine centre back Lisandro Martinez from Ajax. That deal set a benchmark.
United went back to the same club in search of a player who is younger, more glamorous and more of a consolidated international than Martinez.
The asking price was obviously enormous. But, if Antony replicates the form under mentor Ten Hag he showed at Ajax, it could be business well spent. More

Cristiano Ronaldo ‘on bus to Leicester’ and in Man Utd squad with hopes of transfer exit all but OVER

CRISTIANO RONALDO is on Manchester United’s team coach heading to Leicester City – seemingly ruling out any potential transfer exit today. The striker, 37, has been linked with several clubs over the last few weeks.

That was after Ronaldo told the club he wanted to leave in order to play Champions League football earlier this summer.
United have insisted that they are yet to receive an offer for the superstar and that they wanted to keep him at the club.
And new manager Erik Ten Hag has also insisted that the Portuguese forward is happy to stay.
Despite that, a number of reports have continued that he could be heading out of the exit door before tonight’s transfer deadline.

However, that now seems increasingly unlikely after Sky Sports confirmed the veteran had been spotted on United’s team bus that was travelling to tonight’s clash at Leicester.
And he is set to be part of the squad that will face the Foxes.
Despite being linked with the likes of Chelsea, Bayern Munich, Napoli, Atletico Madrid and Sporting Lisbon over the course of the window, none of them have launched a formal offer for him.

Ronaldo is desperate to continue playing in the Champions League, but is now set to turn out in the Europa League this season.
Speaking this week on whether Ronaldo was part of his plans, Ten Hag said: “It is clear, of course. But I just said we need quality players.
“You need more to cover all the games to keep the consistency going, that is what we strive for.”
Ronaldo has been benched by Ten Hag in United’s last two games – wins over Liverpool and Southampton.
But he still seemingly features in his manager’s plans.
And Ronaldo himself gave a thumbs up while reporting for duty at Carrington yesterday ahead of United’s trip to Leicester. More

That could change in the final hours of the window if Milan need to sign a forward.
And with the Italians in talks to sell Rafael Leao to Chelsea, it is possible the Serie A champions will sign Ronaldo as his replacement, according to the Manchester Evening News.
Chelsea are pushing to sign Leao, 23, but he is currently valued at £126m despite scoring only 28 goals in 119 games for the Italian side.
