Man Utd, Chelsea and Liverpool set for Frenkie de Jong transfer battle in January with Barcelona star’s future unclear

MANCHESTER UNITED, Chelsea and Liverpool are reportedly set to battle it out for Frenkie de Jong’s signature in the January transfer window. The Barcelona midfielder, 25, was linked with a move to both United and Chelsea in the summer.

The Red Devils agreed a fee of £72million including add-ons for the Dutchman back in July.
But backdated wage payments that Barcelona owed the player stalled the deal and ended up forcing it to collapse.
New Blues owner Todd Boehly then tried to hijack United’s target late on in the window, but that too was unsuccessful.
However, De Jong has been out of favour with Barca boss Xavi so far this season, starting just five games in all competitions.

And the Catalan giants are set to be eliminated from the Champions League before the knockout rounds after only one win from their opening four matches.
According to ESPN, the lack of game time and need to recoup some of the money lost by their imminent European exit could make De Jong an easier acquisition in January.
Chelsea remain light in midfield after N’Golo Kante underwent hamstring surgery this week, with the Frenchman expected to be out for four months.
Jorginho’s future is also up in the air as he is out of contract at the end of the campaign.

It is understood Chelsea now have a good relationship with HCM Sports Management – who list De Jong as their client.
Meanwhile, United also remain interested in the former Ajax man – with Erik ten Hag having previously coached him at the Eredivisie side.
However, the Red Devils will struggle to do a deal in January given they spent more than £200m in the summer window.
And Liverpool could yet beat both of them to De Jong, with Jurgen Klopp thought to be still in the market for a midfielder.
The Reds brought Arthur Melo in on loan after injury problems, but he has barely featured due to struggles with injury.
De Jong recently spoke about the pressure he received from Barcelona chiefs during the summer as they tried to force him out of the Nou Camp.
Earlier this month, he told Ziggo Sport: “I was calm. I decided in May that I wanted to stay. My opinion has never changed during this entire period.

“I stayed calm. But then you know the pressure would start to come.
“Yes, from the newspapers, from the president, exactly. From everywhere actually. But I wanted to stay at Barca so it never baffled me.” More

Ex-Celtic star Jeremie Frimpong ‘lined up by Premier League giants Manchester United’ as shock January transfer target

JEREMIE FRIMPONG has reportedly been lined up for a stunning move to the Premier League.Manchester United have been rumoured to be keeping an eye on the former City defender.
Frimpong scored a double against Shalke earlier this month
Frimpong joined Celtic back in 2019 under the rule of former boss Neil Lennon.
The Dutch defender arrived at Parkhead with great promise after leaving the highly-rated Manchester City academy.
And the youngster won everything there was to win in Scotland, claiming the Premiership title, the Scottish Cup and the League Cup.
He even won the fans’ young player of the year award in 2020 for his performances in the green and white.
He was then sold to Bayer Leverkusen for a cool £11.5 million in the summer of 2021 on a four year deal.
But now his form in Germany has seen him linked with a footballing giant.
Man U are now reportedly lining up a move for the Dutch defender, according to Sky Sports.
They reckon that Red Devils boss Erik Ten Hag has Frimpong ‘on his radar’ as they look to strengthen in the right-back slot.

Currently, England international Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Diego Dalot have occupied that position.
But with their lacklustre form, the Old Trafford side may be looking at other options in the January transfer window.
Meanwhile, former Hoops boss Neil Lennon is ‘interested’ in the Northern Ireland job after they sacked Ian Baraclough yesterday.
The former Celtic boss was shown the door by Omonia as the club blamed “competitive instability” over the last few months for their decision.
But he is tipped to make a quick return to management.
Scotland hero Alan Rough insists the former Hibs man is interested in taking over his national team.

Speaking on the PLZ Football Show, he said: “They have a ready made replacement waiting in Neil Lennon. It remains to be seen whether he fancies it.
“I’ve heard he is interested in it, yeah. He’s interested but it doesn’t mean he’s going to get it.”

Ten Hag has told the 37-year-old to train on his own while the rest of the team prepare for the trip to Stamford Bridge and is hoping his time away from his teammates will give him time to think.

Doubts over his ability mounted after Brentford hammered United 4-0 in August and the Argentine was hauled off at half-time.
But Erik ten Hag kept his faith and that has been repaid by a series of fine displays alongside Raphael Varane.
That stunning form continued on Wednesday as goals from Fred and Bruno Fernandes secured a 2-0 victory over Tottenham in a performance their boss hailed as the best of the season so far.
Martinez, nicknamed “The Butcher”, is also fast becoming a fan favourite on the Stretford End.

And supporters were keen to show their affection for him during the Spurs win as they chanted his name as well as “Argentina, Argentina” as they kept Harry Kane quiet.
Speaking to Sky Sports ahead of their trip to Chelsea on Saturday, modest Martinez insisted that he could not take all the credit for a third-successive clean sheet.
He said: “I think [it was] not only me, but all the players, we did a fantastic job.
“We deserved [the win] because we trained really hard to get this.”

Cristiano Ronaldo has NO more allies at Man Utd with Tottenham sulk the final straw for few remaining pals in squad

CRISTIANO RONALDO has NO more backers at Manchester United with his sulk against Tottenham being the final straw for his remaining pals.SunSport can reveal that the forward has lost the backing of the few allies he had left in the Red Devils camp.
Cristiano Ronaldo has ran out of allies after his strop against TottenhamCredit: Rex
Several squad members were already upset with him for trying to engineer a move out of the club early in the season.
However, there were no takers in the summer window and Ronaldo faces being sidelined just over four weeks out from the World Cup where he will lead Portugal.
Recently he had seemed happier but his Spurs strop was the straw that broke the camel’s back for the few team-mates who had continued to back him.
Furious boss Erik ten Hag wants Ronaldo out of United after sensationally axing him from his squad.

The United legend has almost certainly played his last game for the club after he REFUSED to come on as a late substitute in Wednesday’s 2-0 win over Spurs.
Ronaldo, 37, stormed down the tunnel five minutes before the final whistle and left Old Trafford while his team-mates were still celebrating on the pitch.
Ten Hag has now lost patience and come down hard on the veteran striker.
He has been left out of the squad for tomorrow’s crunch Premier League trip to Chelsea and was forced to train on his own yesterday and will not be allowed to rejoin the first-team squad until after their next match.

The Portuguese icon is also facing a staggering £720,000 fine — two weeks’ wages — for defying his manager.
Ronaldo issued a statement last night but did not apologise for his strop.
The United manager has the full backing of the club’s hierarchy and Ten Hag dealt with the matter as soon as Ronaldo arrived for training at the club’s Carrington HQ yesterday.
The Dutchman now wants either the player’s contract, that runs to the end of the season, ripped up or for the Portuguese to be dumped in the January transfer window.
The last thing Ten Hag and United need is another Ronaldo sideshow affecting the club’s form having rallied from losing their opening two games.
Ronaldo was axed from the starting XI after the 4-0 away defeat in the second league game of the season at Brentford.
He was recalled for his first league start since then in Sunday’s 0-0 draw against Newcastle but got the hump when he was hooked in the second half for Marcus Rashford.
Five-time Ballon d’Or winner Ronaldo had his say on the fallout with a lengthy Instagram post.
He wrote: “As I’ve always done in my career, I try to live and play respectfully towards my colleagues, my adversaries and my coaches.
“That hasn’t changed. I’m the same person that I’ve been for the last 20 years playing elite football and respect has always played a very important role in my decision- making process.
“I started very young and the older and most experienced players’ examples were always very important to me.
“Therefore, later on, I’ve always tried to set the example myself for the youngsters in the teams I’ve represented.
“Unfortunately that’s not always possible and sometimes the heat of  the moment gets the best of us.
“Right now, I have to keep working hard in Carrington, support my team-mates and be ready for everything in any game.

Liverpool missed out on signing Man Utd star Cristiano Ronaldo just a week before move after ‘fee trebled’ overnight

LIVERPOOL failed to sign Cristiano Ronaldo only a week before he joined Manchester United after Sir Alex Ferguson gazumped his rivals, according to Phil Thompson. The then-Reds assistant boss has revealed that his team were one of many English clubs interested in the Portuguese forward.
Ronaldo went on to become a mega star at Old TraffordCredit: PA:Press Association
Ronaldo had already declared that a move to Anfield was “a dream” with agents Paul Stretford, Jorge Mendes and Tony Henry negotiating his exit from Sporting CP.
In recalling the 2003 transfer to The Athletic, Thompson states that a £4million fee was required.
He noted: “I asked what kind of salary he would want and they said it was £1 million per year after tax. That was a lot for an 18-year-old kid but they said that was negotiable.
“It was a Sunday and I explained to them that I needed to go back to Liverpool and speak to Gerard Houllier and see what we could do. I fed all the information back to Gerard, who said he would speak to [chief executive] Rick Parry.
“Lo and behold, the following week I’m at Melwood when the yellow ticker on Sky Sports News says: Manchester United sign Cristiano Ronaldo from Sporting for £12.2m.
    “I couldn’t believe my eyes.”
As Thompson says, United had not paid the £4m fee earlier touted and he was left shocked at how the figure changed overnight.

The former defender continued: “Tony told me that when he’d got off the plane on the Monday he had got a call to say he was off the deal. It was down to Stretford and Mendes instead.
“It was astonishing that the fee trebled.
“He was clearly a big talent but no one could have predicted back then how great he was going to be.”
Ronaldo went on to win a treble of Premier League titles in Manchester with 118 goals in almost 300 appearances in his first spell with the club.
