But Fahad ben Nafel insisted it was not Ronaldo who pulled the plug.
Instead, he claimed a transfer ban placed on the Saudi Arabian side proved the critical blow.
Nafel told the Thamanya YouTube channel: “Yes, we negotiated with Ronaldo.
“The problem was not in the money or the principle, Al-Hilal is able to bring in the stars of the world.

“But it was in the decision of the Sports Arbitration Centre that prevented us from registering the players.
“We did not stop negotiating with the players despite the decision to ban, but we were delaying entering the final stage of the negotiations until the ban was lifted.”
Ronaldo, 37, looked on course to quit United in the summer after the club failed to qualify for the Champions League with just 12 months left on his Old Trafford contract.
He was linked with Chelsea, Atletico Madrid, Bayern Munich and Napoli but they all opted against trying to sign the five-time Ballon d’Or winner.

That meant a switch to the Middle East looked more likely with massive wages up to £2million per week on offer.
Al-Hilal appeared to be in pole position.
However, they were slapped with the sanctions which prevented them bringing in any new players after Mohamed Kanno’s transfer fiasco saw him registered for two clubs at the same time.
Ronaldo has started just once in the Premier League this season – the 4-0 drubbing at Brentford – with Marcus Rashford claiming the No9 spot.
The Portugal superstar did get his first goal of the season from the penalty spot as United beat Sheriff 2-0 in the Europa League.
However, SunSport revealed his team-mates believe he will push for a move once again in January. More

Manchester United are also believed to be interested in Dumfries following his impressive debut season at Inter last year.
But it is Chelsea who will ramp up their efforts to sign the 26-year-old once the transfer window re-opens, according to Corriere dello Sport.
Chelsea are reportedly willing to offer Inter £45.5million for Dumfries and could loan him back to the Serie A giants for the rest of the season if he agrees to sign.
That is a big if as Dumfries revealed he is only concentrating on winning success at the San Siro – with the Scudetto in his sights.

The Dutchman said of the links to Chelsea: “The interest flatters me, of course. But my focus is only on Inter.
“We want to win the Scudetto because we lost it last season.”
Chelsea could wait until the end of the season to make a bid for Dumfries after spending heavily in the summer.
But United could rival their bid having targeted the right back in the summer.

SunSport recently revealed that the in-demand midfielder could leave Dortmund for just £83million next summer.
That is if the entire fee is paid up front by one of the England international’s suitors.
If he moves, Bellingham’s “gestures” suggest that his preference is a switch to Real.
The reigning European champions reportedly asked the 19-year-old to reject a new a contract with Dortmund.

The ex-Bimingham star acted accordingly and also turned down his Premier League suitors’ advances.
Real are looking to inject some youth into their midfield, which has been rock solid in the last few years with the star trio of Luka Modric, Toni Kroos and Casemiro, who left for United.
Modric, 37, and Kroos, 32, are both at an advanced age and their deals run out in June.
Los Blancos are now slowly paving the way for the likes of Eduardo Camavinga, Aurelien Tchouameni and Federico Valverde to take over in the future.

Tyrell Malacia thrives in shock new position for Holland but asks Man Utd NOT to move him from left-back

But left-back Malacia managed to shine bright as he played in an unfamiliar position in a back three alongside Van Dijk and United transfer target Jurrien Timber.
The full-back came on as a half-time substitute when he replaced Manchester City ace Nathan Ake.
And the 23-year-old showed exactly how much depth Netherlands manager Louis van Gaal has in defence ahead of the 2022 World Cup.
Van Gaal has the likes of Ake, Van Dijk, Timber, Matthijs de Ligt and Stefan de Vrij at his disposal.

But the ex-United boss lost former Stoke ace Bruno Martins Indi to an injury that won’t allow him to compete in Qatar and thus Malacia’s impressive performance could turn him into a valuable replacement.
Van Gaal told ESPN NL: “Martins Indi won’t make it [to the World Cup].
“I also wanted to see Malacia in that place, so Ake was substituted for Belgium.
“Because Martins Indi is not going to make it, I have to look at other players who can play there.”

Malacia’s display also works as a boost for United manager Erik ten Hag who now knows he has even more options at centre-back.
Ten Hag seems to prefer the pair of Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane at the back.
Martinez has stood out despite earlier concerns regarding his short stature.
However, Malacia also proved those critics wrong against Belgium as he also shone bright in that position even though he is even shorter than his Argentine team-mate.
The defender, though, has urged United to keep him at left-back and not try to pair him up with Martinez.
Malacia told De Telegraaf: “I’m comfortable with #mufc at the moment. The national coach thinks that I should also be able to play in the centre of the defence. But I feel best on the left.” More

But the legend says he will ‘not be a fan of United anymore’ if they sell naming rights to Old Trafford
The Man Utd icon has started a travel company, Looking FC, which focuses on football experiences at some of Europe’s elite grounds.
And in an interview with The Athletic, Cantona insists he will “quit football forever” if Old Trafford gets renamed.
He said: “The trips are about going inside the passion of football, understanding the story of a club, how football is used, then how you live your life.
“We were speaking about my favourite football stadiums earlier but now all the stadiums are called Emirates or Allianz.

The club legend scored 81 goals in 181 games under Alex Ferguson.
Cantona wanted to work alongside the Chairman and President of Marketing – but his offer was turned down.
He added: “Last year, I proposed to the club to change their way.
