Remarkably, Ronaldo was left on the bench by Erik ten Hag despite United trailing 4-0 at the break.
The Dutchman revealed that he decided against bringing on the 37-year-old out of ‘respect’ to his career.
Ten Hag’s shock decision ended up paying off after Anthony Martial marked his return to action with two goals late on, which made the scoreline slightly more respectable.
Nevertheless, Ronaldo, along with teammates Marcus Rashford and Harry Maguire, looked glum-faced as he drove into training less than 24 hours after he was overlooked by Ten Hag.

Ten Hag’s decision to leave Ronaldo on the bench raises further doubts over his Old Trafford future.
Having been strongly linked with a summer exit, the Portugal international has started just one Premier League game this season.
And the ex-Real Madrid star has now played just 80 minutes across United’s last five league fixtures.
Ronaldo could get some much-needed minutes in the tank against Cypriot outfit Omonia Nicosia in the Europa League on Thursday.

He’ll be hoping to get back in the goals and catch Ten Hag’s eye ahead of Sunday’s trip to Everton.
But his snub at the Etihad Stadium continued what has been a frustrating start to the season.
Man Utd icon Roy Keane blasted his former club for being “disrespectful” given Ronaldo’s status as a legend of the game.
Speaking on Sky Sports, he said: “I think Man United are showing disrespect to Ronaldo. I think he should have been let go before the [closing] of the window.
“Okay, you’re the manager, you need options but you don’t hold onto Ronaldo to sit on the bench. He’s one of the greatest players ever.

Not only is the Spain international out of contract next summer, but his form has been underwhelming this season.
De Gea shipped another six in the 6-3 defeat at Manchester City on Sunday, meaning he’s already conceded 14 goals, the fifth most in the Premier League.
Now, the Metro report that Erik ten Hag has turned his attention to Costa.
The report claims that United representatives were in attendance at the Estadio do Dragao against Braga on Friday night.

Costa has already been capped seven times by Portugal and has played 78 times for Porto since making his debut back in 2019.
Ten Hag is hoping to sign someone good with their feet, with De Gea’s lack of ability when playing out from the back clear to see.
And that’s where Costa could come into play.
The 23-year-old is comfortable in possession and could help Ten Hag go back to his old ways after reducing the amount of playing out the back following the defeat at Brentford.

Costa would cost United £30m, but De Gea is the club’s highest paid player, so him leaving would save them around £16m every year in wages.

The Portugal captain, 37, was supposedly desperate to leave Manchester United this summer and play in the Champions League.
But he stayed, despite having had a few “very good” options, according to the former Old Trafford legend.
Speaking on Sky Sports, Keane explained: “United are showing disrespect to Ronaldo.
“I think he should have been let go this summer during the transfer window. I don’t think the manager should have held onto him just for him to sit on the bench.

“United have shown nothing but disrespect to Ronaldo and they should have let him go when the opportunity came.

“If you look at his goals record, he had as good a chance as anyone as putting the ball in the net.
“People are obsessed with the pressing side of the game but if you put the ball in the right areas, he will score goals.”
Ronaldo was heavily linked with Chelsea but the Blues, along with the likes of Bayern Munich, ruled themselves out of a shock move.
Atletico Madrid were said to have pulled out after a fan backlash over the ex-Real striker.
His agent Jorge Mendes had been searching for a new club all summer — without success.
But Irishman Keane thinks it’s now time to forgive and forget.
The 37-year-old Ron didn’t play a single minute as the Red Devils were stuffed 6-3 by their local rivals Manchester City.
They were thrashed by the Premier League champions at the Etihad as Phil Foden and Erling Haaland both scored hat-tricks in a one-sided mauling.
Ronaldo started the match on the bench for the fifth league match in a row.

And he did not even see any game time in the closing stages – one of just four substitutes Ten Hag chose not to use.

Ten Hag opted to bring Anthony Martial on instead of Ronaldo for the final half an hour with the score at 4-1.
And the Frenchman did bag two late goals to add some level of respectability to proceedings, albeit when the result had already been decided.
When asked about bringing on Martial instead of Ronaldo, Ten Hag insisted he did it “out of respect” for the Portuguese superstar’s career.
He then added: “The other thing was the advantage I could bring Martial, he needs the minutes but I don’t want to point it out like that.”

Furious Roy Keane slams ‘hugely embarrassing’ Man Utd and says Erik ten Hag will be ‘scratching his head’ over display

Antony’s strike and Anthony Martial’s brace eased the blow for the Red Devils, who were 4-0 down at half-time.
However, Keane was infuriated by the display he witnessed and insists manager Erik ten Hag has a lot of problems to figure out ahead of the next games.
The star pundit, though, praised City as “one of the best teams” he’s seen live.
Keane told Sky Sports: “There’s nothing for United to take out from this game. The players should be embarrassed. You can’t go into half-time 4-0 down in a derby game.

“It’s hugely embarrassing, as brilliant as City were United were desperate, particularly in midfield. They were over-ran in midfield and defensively they were all over the shop.
“Again we look at leadership… There was nothing there from Man Utd. If you’re giving players like [Kevin] De Bruyne time and space, you’re looking for trouble.
“United got punished and rightly so. Top level sport is fantastic but it’s brutal. Today, it was brutal for Manchester United as when you’re not quite at it, you get hammered by your local rivals.
“United have an experienced team out there. City were missing players, but whoever comes into the team is pure quality. That’s what they have whereas Man Utd seemed all over the place.

“At a big club like Manchester United, you wonder what it must be like for the players sat in the dressing room 4-0 down at half-time.
“It must be bizarre, but then these players are getting used to it as they were 4-0 down at Brentford.
“The manager must be scratching his head with his staff as there was progress in the last four games, but this is a huge step back.
“It was the way they started. They were slow out of the blocks. City sent a message that they were up for it, and the first goal is huge.
“United went down after eight minutes and they never recovered. There were spaces everywhere, they were sloppy in possession. [Marcus] Rashford never got hold of it, the wide players gave it away.
“Every time Man City went forward, they looked like they were going to score. It’s a pleasure to watch City. They’re one of the best teams I’ve seen live but for United this is a huge setback.

United supporters were incensed with Ten Hag’s decision to have attacking midfielder Eriksen mark the Norway international in such a big match.

Man Utd have introduced a ‘no d***heads’ rule in the transfer market under Ten Hag as secrets to upturn in form revealed

And according to The Telegraph, incoming boss Ten Hag oversaw a transfer plan that meant the club made sure to recruit “no d*** heads”.
That was at risk when they registered an interest in ex-Stoke forward Marko Arnautovic, known for his stroppy attitude.
The strict transfer policy is credited as one of the reasons for Manchester United’s upturn in form.
The Telegraph also report that Bruno Fernandes, Harry Maguire as well as goalkeepers David de Gea and Tom Heaton have all acted as leaders at United.

Guardiola said: “If United trust and let him build a team by giving him years and years, that will be welcome. I cannot say anything else.
