‘Players have done a lot worse things’ – Roy Keane defends Cristiano Ronaldo after Man Utd star refused to come on

MANCHESTER UNITED legend Roy Keane defended Cristiano Ronaldo after he was axed by Erik ten Hag for tonight’s clash at Chelsea.Ronaldo, 37, refused to come on against Tottenham on Wednesday’s 2-0 victory and stormed down the tunnel at Old Trafford with injury time still to play before leaving the stadium entirely.

As a result, United boss Erik ten Hag didn’t include the five-time Ballon d’Or winner in the squad for the match against the Blues and ordered him to train by himself at Carrington.
Keane, though, insists Ronaldo’s attitude does not worry him as he claims others “have done a lot worse things” at United.
The footballer-turned-pundit believes this is just a case of the Portugal captain feeling “frustrated” but needs to take his punishment.
Keane told Sky Sports: “Well, obviously the manager has made a decision to leave him out.

“He’s disappointed at Ronaldo [for] not wanting to go on in the 87th [or] 88th minute and the fact he walked down the tunnel. He’s obviously being punished for it.
“But I try to see as well from the player’s point of view, he’s obviously had enough and I think it’s been brewing over the last few weeks with Ronaldo.
“But I will sill try and defend him, I still think he’s a human being, he’s got flaws, he feels frustrated that he’s not been properly getting opportunities and he’s had enough.
“He’s walked down the tunnel, I think players have done a lot worse things at Man Utd. I think it happens, it’s human nature.

“Everyone was talking after the game that they beat Spurs, it was a big win – best performance in years. Absolute rubbish, Spurs were terrible. Man Utd managed to beat Spurs as well last year at home when I think Ronaldo got a hat-trick.
“So he’s more than capable of getting on that pitch and making a difference. But he has to take his punishment, is there a way back for him? I’m not sure.
“I’d be more worried if Ronaldo was sitting on the bench every week laughing his head off and not caring. I think the guy cares.
“I’ve said it before, this game is full of bluffers and he’s certainly not one of them. I think he cares about the club, I think he wants to play, he needs to play. World class player, people saying he’s not the player he was 10 years ago. Of course he’s not.
“But he was the leading goalscorer last year for Man Utd. He went to Man Utd last year, to a bad Man Utd team – really bad team – [and] he was still leading goalscorer.”
Keane’s stance was similar to that of Rio Ferdinand, who claimed Ronaldo should be treated “differently” as he’s “special”.
Ronnie’s former team-mate said: “The way of treating him is different to everybody else. Communication. That’s probably the first time in his life where that’s not upheld by the manager.

“I’m not saying he was right but there are special players sometimes in a squad that things work differently for.
“It’s important for the team to see that he is communicated with. He’s 37. He probably needs that more than ever.” More

Man Utd, Chelsea and Liverpool set for Frenkie de Jong transfer battle in January with Barcelona star’s future unclear

MANCHESTER UNITED, Chelsea and Liverpool are reportedly set to battle it out for Frenkie de Jong’s signature in the January transfer window. The Barcelona midfielder, 25, was linked with a move to both United and Chelsea in the summer.
De Jong has been heavily linked with a move away from Barcelona for some timeCredit: Getty
The Red Devils agreed a fee of £72million including add-ons for the Dutchman back in July.
But backdated wage payments that Barcelona owed the player stalled the deal and ended up forcing it to collapse.
New Blues owner Todd Boehly then tried to hijack United’s target late on in the window, but that too was unsuccessful.
However, De Jong has been out of favour with Barca boss Xavi so far this season, starting just five games in all competitions.

And the Catalan giants are set to be eliminated from the Champions League before the knockout rounds after only one win from their opening four matches.
According to ESPN, the lack of game time and need to recoup some of the money lost by their imminent European exit could make De Jong an easier acquisition in January.
Chelsea remain light in midfield after N’Golo Kante underwent hamstring surgery this week, with the Frenchman expected to be out for four months.
Jorginho’s future is also up in the air as he is out of contract at the end of the campaign.

It is understood Chelsea now have a good relationship with HCM Sports Management – who list De Jong as their client.
Meanwhile, United also remain interested in the former Ajax man – with Erik ten Hag having previously coached him at the Eredivisie side.
However, the Red Devils will struggle to do a deal in January given they spent more than £200m in the summer window.
And Liverpool could yet beat both of them to De Jong, with Jurgen Klopp thought to be still in the market for a midfielder.
The Reds brought Arthur Melo in on loan after injury problems, but he has barely featured due to struggles with injury.
De Jong recently spoke about the pressure he received from Barcelona chiefs during the summer as they tried to force him out of the Nou Camp.
Earlier this month, he told Ziggo Sport: “I was calm. I decided in May that I wanted to stay. My opinion has never changed during this entire period.

“I stayed calm. But then you know the pressure would start to come.

Ex-Celtic star Jeremie Frimpong ‘lined up by Premier League giants Manchester United’ as shock January transfer target

JEREMIE FRIMPONG has reportedly been lined up for a stunning move to the Premier League.Manchester United have been rumoured to be keeping an eye on the former City defender.
Frimpong scored a double against Shalke earlier this month
Frimpong joined Celtic back in 2019 under the rule of former boss Neil Lennon.
The Dutch defender arrived at Parkhead with great promise after leaving the highly-rated Manchester City academy.
And the youngster won everything there was to win in Scotland, claiming the Premiership title, the Scottish Cup and the League Cup.
He even won the fans’ young player of the year award in 2020 for his performances in the green and white.
He was then sold to Bayer Leverkusen for a cool £11.5 million in the summer of 2021 on a four year deal.
But now his form in Germany has seen him linked with a footballing giant.
Man U are now reportedly lining up a move for the Dutch defender, according to Sky Sports.
They reckon that Red Devils boss Erik Ten Hag has Frimpong ‘on his radar’ as they look to strengthen in the right-back slot.

Currently, England international Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Diego Dalot have occupied that position.
But with their lacklustre form, the Old Trafford side may be looking at other options in the January transfer window.
Meanwhile, former Hoops boss Neil Lennon is ‘interested’ in the Northern Ireland job after they sacked Ian Baraclough yesterday.
The former Celtic boss was shown the door by Omonia as the club blamed “competitive instability” over the last few months for their decision.
But he is tipped to make a quick return to management.
Scotland hero Alan Rough insists the former Hibs man is interested in taking over his national team.

Speaking on the PLZ Football Show, he said: “They have a ready made replacement waiting in Neil Lennon. It remains to be seen whether he fancies it.
“I’ve heard he is interested in it, yeah. He’s interested but it doesn’t mean he’s going to get it.”
