But his incredible performances in his homeland as well, as in the World Cup with Brazil, saw the likes of Real Madrid and AC Milan trying to sign him.
United also attempted to land the man dubbed the greatest footballer of all time in 1968.
The Red Devils wanted the three-time World Cup winner to join Sir Matt Busby’s squad and form a stunning frontline with Sir Bobby Charlton, Denis Law and George Best.
However, the Brazilian hero ultimately decided to stay put at his boyhood club Santos where he spent 18 years.

Pele said in 2015: “I was invited to come to Europe many times, to come to Real Madrid, Milan, Manchester United but I was OK.
“Santos was the best team at that time. But today it’s different. Because in my time we didn’t have an agent.
“These days it is not the player, it is the agent who decides where they go to play.

England ace Jude Bellingham snubbed Man Utd transfer despite ‘double your money offer and meetings with two club icons’

JUDE BELLINGHAM snubbed a move to Manchester United, even though they offered TWICE as much as other suitors AND introduced him to Sir Alex Ferguson and Eric Cantona.According to ex-Birmingham CEO Dong Ren, United’s now-former chief Ed Woodward went all out to land Bellingham in 2020 from St Andrew’s.

The Red Devils offered the prodigious talent, then just 17, a salary around two times larger than other bidders, who included Chelsea, Leicester, Wolves, Bayern Munich.
But the England international opted for Borussia Dortmund where he has flourished in the last two years, with a 112 appearances already under his belt.
Ren told Mundo Deportivo: “United made the biggest offer we received compared to Bayern, Dortmund, Leicester or other clubs like Wolves.
“Ed Woodward was the most insistent. We sat down and talked about how we could convince Bellingham. But Jude didn’t make any decisions based on money.

“They offered much more salary compared to the rest. Maybe double.
“He was going to have guaranteed millions in the bank and he did not take them. That’s not normal for a player at all.”
United even tried to lure Bellingham to Old Trafford by setting up a meeting with then manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
The Manchester giants also introduced him to club icons like legendary boss Ferguson and Eric Cantona, who advised him to put pen to paper.

Ren added: “He sat down with Solskjaer, until Woodward brought Ferguson that day, another day to Cantona, to try to convince him.
“He chose Dortmund over Bayern despite not being sure to win titles and money. He put all that behind his development. How many players would do that?
“Because nothing is guaranteed at Dortmund. It might not have turned out well.”
Bellingham, now 20, is still being chased by some of Europe’s highest bidders with Real Madrid, Liverpool and Manchester City all ready to play £100m-plus for him.
SunSport revealed last week that City believe the chance to work with Pep Guardiola could swing the Dortmund star’s decision in their favour. More

Arsenal ‘leading race for long-term Man Utd transfer target Sergej Milinkovic-Savic.. and Lazio could finally sell’

ARSENAL are reportedly “leading the race for long-term Manchester United transfer target Sergej Milinkovic-Savic” with Lazio allegedly set to “finally sell” their star.
The 39-capped Serbian international has been linked with a move to the Premier League for years.
Sergej Milinkovic-Savic is the heart-beat of the Lazio team

Chelsea and Manchester United have both been keen on signing him.
However, we reported earlier this month how Arsenal are now his most likely destination with Mikel Arteta’s side looking to win the race for him.
Lazio’s club president Claudio Lotito has been vocal about his wish to keep Milinkovic-Savic and has been consistent about saying how highly valued he is at the Rome club.
However, the 27-year-old is now entering the final 18 months of his contract in the Italian capital.

And Corriere dello Sport are claiming that Lazio do not want to risk losing Milinkovic-Savic for nothing, which could lead to them cashing in come January.
The report says that the Premier League leaders, who beat West Ham 3-1 on Boxing Day, have firmed up their interest in the ace over recent months.
They even scouted him during Lazio’s 2-0 win over Verona in September.
Milinkovic-Savic initially wanted to join a club competing in the Champions League, which scuppered the Gunners’ hopes of signing him last summer.

But Arsenal’s stunning form means they are bang on course to return to Europe’s elite competition next term.
Now this latest update says that Milinkovic-Savic is open to joining Arteta’s project and his agent, ex-Chelsea striker Mateja Kezman, is looking at options for his client.
He is looking to secure a transfer bid of between £35.2 and £44m to take to Lazio with Arsenal considered to be in pole position.
Although, it does add that the North London club have not yet tabled an official offer.
Milinkovic-Savic has played over 300 times for Lazio since joining from Belgian side Genk back in 2015.  More

The England international was highly influential during Tuesday’s 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford as he scored the first and set Anthony Martial up soon after.
But Owen insists the forward can’t be the Red Devils’ “main goalscorer” because he can’t play through the middle like Wayne Rooney or Robin van Persie did.
The former United star, though, is confident he can still deliver from his preferred left wing.
Owen told Amazon Prime: “He is not your main goalscorer.

“If you’re at Manchester United, Rashford isn’t going to be scoring you 30 goals a season like a Wayne Rooney, like a Robin van Persie.
“[But] He will contribute double figures every year from that left hand side position.
“If you think Manchester United will play him down the middle and score 30 goals and be your main man then I would question it.”
United have found themselves in need of a new striker after Cristiano Ronaldo’s dramatic exit with Martial their only recognised No9.
