Burnley players gutted about not being able to face axed Cristiano Ronaldo as they eye Man Utd Carabao Cup shock

BURNLEY’S Johann Berg Gudmundsson regrets that his club’s young guns will miss out on mixing it with Cristiano Ronaldo on Wednesday night. The high-flying Clarets are licking their lips at testing their top-flight credentials at Manchester United in the Carabao Cup fourth-round clash.

But the biggest name will not be among them, after Ron’s acrimonious parting of the ways with the Red Devils last month.
Gudmundsson, 32, said: “I’ve played against him a few times, but I reckon a few of the young lads will definitely be a bit sad to have him not on the pitch.
“You want to play against the best and a few of the lads just missed him.
“But it does mean it’s less of a problem for us because he can still be extremely dangerous in the box, so yeah, it could be a good thing for us.

“We don’t have to worry about him.”
Burnley may be big underdogs, but Iceland ace Gudmundsson knows what it takes to get a result at Old Trafford.
The Clarets went four years without losing at United, including a 2-0 win in 2020, and wasted no time getting back to winning ways against Middlesbrough on Saturday.
That made it ten wins in the past 12 games for the Championship leaders and boss Vincent Kompany has previous, having headed a derby winner in Man City’s 2012 title triumph.

Gudmundsson added: “We know United are a massive team  — but we also believe in our quality.
“So we want to go there and show people we are the real deal.
“Obviously the main aim is to get back to the Premier League so it will be good to come up against United and show what we’re about.” More

‘A teacher, a legend… and a s***house’ – Ander Herrera recalls his three Man Utd managers

ANDER HERRERA has labelled his three Manchester United managers a “teacher”, a “legend” and a “s***house”. The midfielder played under Louis Van Gaal, then Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Old Trafford.

Herrera left United for PSG in 2019 and recently opened up on his emotional departure – and the bosses he played under.
He revealed that he was huge fan of all three coaches for different reasons as he spoke to the UTD podcast.
The 33-year-old said: “Very different managers. Van Gaal I can say, positional game coach, like a teacher sometimes for young players.
“Mourinho, a ****house coach. It doesn’t matter what you have to do to win, I just want to win, and we won. And Ole, a legend of the club.

“He believed so much in Sir Alex Ferguson’s philosophy and he wanted to bring that philosophy back to the club, but it was not easy. The players were different, the moment was different, football was different.”
Herrera added of Mourinho: “He is one of the greatest managers of all time. One of the most successful managers of all time. He discovered a new position for me, he made me a more defensive midfielder.
“In the first season we won three trophies: the Community Shield, the Europa League and League Cup. And we qualified for the Champions League so it was a very successful season.”
Herrera arrived in 2014 when Van Gaal was the boss, winning the FA Cup under the Dutchman in 2016.

Mourinho replaced LVG that summer and after a successful first season, life at the club grew increasingly chaotic as his tenure spiralled out of control.
He was dismissed in December 2018 and Solskjaer turned his interim job into a permanent one after a remarkable turnaround in form.
Herrera only got to enjoy half a season with the Norwegian coach before his five-year stay at the club came to an abrupt end.
The Spaniard added that he learnt “a lot” from van Gaal and hailed Solskjaer as “one of the best people I have met in football.”

Herrera went on to warn new boss Erik Ten Hag that increased level of competition in the Premier League makes it harder for any manager to replicate Sir Alex Ferguson’s success.
He said: “We have to realise that now the coaches are fighting against five or six teams to win trophies.
“Before, Sir Alex did amazing, but it was mostly Liverpool, Arsenal and United fighting for the trophies.
“So it is not easy for Ten Hag now to fight Tottenham, Chelsea, City, Liverpool, Arsenal and even Newcastle now. It is tough to be a Manchester United coach.” More

Man Utd transfer blow as Bayern Munich want Yann Sommer after Red Devils targeted David De Gea replacement on a free

MANCHESTER UNITED have been hit with some bad news in their pursuit of Borussia Monchengladbach keeper Yann Sommer, according to reports. The 34-year-old, who is the No1 choice for the Switzerland national team, is due to become a free agent in the summer when his deal with the Bundesliga club expires.

Man Utd are thought to be eyeing him up as a potential replacement for David de Gea – particularly considering it appears unlikely Dean Henderson will return from his loan spell.
However, Sky are now reporting that German champions Bayern Munich have declared an interest in the shot-stopper.
And they are keen to secure his signature in the January window – just six months before he is set to be released.
That is because their first-choice keeper Manuel Neuer, 36, has been ruled out for the rest of the season after breaking his leg in a skiing accident.

Bayern are believed to have already made contact with his representatives.
But Man Utd will be hoping the Bundesliga giants’ alternative options pay off so they can scoop him up in the summer.
Bayern are also looking at Aston Villa and Argentina star Emi Martinez following his heroics at the World Cup.
And there is still the possibility that Julian Nagelsmann may not have to sign a keeper at all.

This is because the club are trying to recall Alexander Nubel from his loan at Monaco.
If they are able to do so, it is likely the 26-year-old German will take Neuer’s place for the remainder of the campaign.
Bayern went into the World Cup break top of the Bundesliga table, four points ahead of second-place Freiburg.
They do not return to action until January 20 when they travel to RB Leipzig. More

Man Utd ‘trigger contract extensions for FOUR players and plan to offer Rashford, De Gea and Dalot new deals’

According to Fabrizio Romano, United plan to offer Rashford and Dalot longer deals.
Additionally, talks with goalkeeper David de Gea are also ongoing.
Spaniard De Gea in 2019 extended his contract but it is set to expire next summer.
After reestablishing his form between the posts, Dutch manager Erik ten Hag is set to reward the stopper with a fresh deal.

Rashford, Shaw, Dalot and Fred were all also set to be out of contact at the end of the season.
And had they not agreed an extension, all four would have been free to speak to foreign clubs over a free transfer in January.
So United reacted by extending their deals by 12 months to give them time to address the future of all four.
But for De Gea, the club want to strike a new, shorter-term deal for the keeper.

Rashford has emerged as a transfer target for PSG, whose president Nasser Al-Khelaifi publicly revealed their interest.
United now face a challenge in persuading the England international to commit his future to the club long term.
If not, they risk losing the forward on a cut-price fee next summer – or as free agent in 18 months if he runs down his deal.
Rashford has found his form again under Ten Hag, with eight goals this season and earned himself a place in England’s World Cup squad.
He also scored three times in Qatar and returns to United with his manager desperate to keep hold of him.

Five strikers Man Utd could turn to in January transfer window to replace Cristiano Ronaldo including Goncalo Ramos

MANCHESTER UNITED could go into the January transfer market hoping to buy a striker after the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portuguese international had his contract at the club ripped up after his explosive interview with Piers Morgan.

It leaves manager Erik ten Hag in difficult situation as he does not have an out-and-out striker leaving them light up top.
Marcus Rashford or Anthony Martial could play there but it is clear the club needs a new centre-forward to lead the line.
Man Utd need the squad depth with the team still in the race for the top four, Europa League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup.
Here are five strikers Man Utd could go for in January.

    Goncalo Ramos
Goncalo Ramos replaced Ronaldo in the World Cup leading the line for Portugal after manager Fernando Santos dropped the 37-year-old from the group stages onwards.
The Benfica man could step into Ronaldo’s shoes at club level too after an impressive couple of season in Lisbon.
He has netted 15 goals in 22 games this campaign on top of his six assists, helping Benfica gain an eight-point lead at the top of the table.
The 21-year-old only broke into the team last season and is beginning to make a name for himself, but he is still a raw talent.

He proved he can live up to the big occasion with his World Cup hat-trick over Switzerland.
Man Utd were linked with him over the summer for £35million but a deal now could cost closer to his £103m reported release clause.

    Memphis Depay
Could Memphis Depay return to Old Trafford?
He was signed by the club back in 2015 but the move didn’t work out and just two seasons later he was shipped off to Lyon.
But since leaving Manchester, Depay has met his potential scoring 76 times for Lyon across five seasons.
His good form earned him a switch to Barcelona but since the signing of Robert Lewandowski, he has had his minutes restricted.
Depay’s contract at the Nou Camp runs out at the end of this season and he is looking for a new club with a potential cut-price deal available.
The striker could feel he has unfinished business in the Premier League and fellow Dutchman Ten Hag could get the best out of him.

    Youssoufa Moukoko
Remember the name of Borussia Dortmund’s rising star.
Aged just 18, Youssoufa Moukoko is set to become one of football’s biggest stars.
He is already a regular for Dortmund scoring six and assisting four in 14 games for the club this campaign.
His good form saw him earn a place in the Germany squad for the World Cup, making just one appearance in Qatar as Hansi Flick’s men failed to make it out of the group.
The teenager born in 2004 holds the record for the youngest player to feature in Bundesliga history, making his debut a day after he turned 16-years-old.
Soon after, at 16 years and 28 days, he became the youngest Bundesliga goalscorer ever.
Chelsea and Man Utd are supposedly keen on the striker.

    Joao Felix
Atletico Madrid are looking to get rid of Joao Felix.
The club signed him from Benfica for a reported £113 million back in 2019.
However, despite helping Atleti win LaLiga in his second season there, he hasn’t quite hit the heights many thought he would.
Felix seemingly doesn’t fit manager Diego Simeone’s system and the club want to cash-in on him amid financial trouble.
The 23-year-old could do with a fresh start to rediscover top form and Manchester United may provide him with just that.
He would offer Ten Hag flexibility as he can play as a striker, attacking midfielder or winger.
Arsenal, Aston Villa and Chelsea are also in the race for his signature.

    Cody Gakpo
Cody Gakpo has been in incredible form for PSV this season.
He has scored 13 goals and got 17 assists in just 24 matches for the Dutch club and he looks set for a big money move.
PSV have admitted they may not be able to keep Gakpo for much longer but will hope to bring in a fee of at least £40million for him.
Man Utd were close to signing him over the summer, as were Leeds and Southampton, but the Red Devils opted for Antony instead. Since then, Real Madrid have entered the race.

Gakpo, 23, is predominately a left-winger, but he can play as a No.9 if needed.
He put to bed any doubts he can’t do it at the highest level at the World Cup, netting three times for the Netherlands.

Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag using DRONE to study squad training sessions in bid to transform club’s fortunes

ERIK TEN HAG is searching high and low for anything that will help him transform Manchester United’s fortunes. And for the Dutchman, that means sooner rather than later.

He hopes it will get Donny van de Beek and Co into the best shape possibleCredit: Getty
For he knows in the cut-throat world of trying to win trophies, there is no time to waste.
Such is Ten Hag’s minute attention to detail he has upgraded the DRONE that his coaches use to monitor training.
Ten Hag has only been in charge for seven months but he said: “When you change things in an organisation and change the way of playing, it’s difficult.
“In top-level football, opponents want to kill you — and that has happened.
    READ MORE ON MAN UTD
“We had to quickly adapt and our squad has been really terrific.”
Ten Hag was faced with an enormous task when he replaced interim boss Ralf Rangnick in May.
That is why his team of coaches and performance analysts have also had long discussions with counterparts from some of the cycling teams who took part in last year’s Tour de France over diet and sleep patterns.
And that is why, as witnessed during a training session in the recent break to southern Spain, there are now over 20 coaches and assistants overseeing the work being done.

Every session is filmed to be broken down and then presented back to Ten Hag.
He has also introduced a Dutch firm called the Talent Academy Group, made up of life coaches and psychologists who work twice a week with the players.
One of them, Rainier Koers, stood alone and watched the action as the squad prepared for the season’s return near Jerez.
Of his expertise as a life coach, he stated: “Helping people is something which makes me very happy.
“I do that by listening, watching and feeling what is going on with the other person — and making them aware of unconscious behaviours.”
The Talent Academy Group helped develop Memphis Depay from a United reject in 2017 into a star with Lyon then Barcelona — and he was one of the big hits of Holland’s World Cup run.
They also work with gymnasts, wind surfers, cycling and ice hockey teams, as well as Eredivisie clubs.
Change is something Ten Hag knew he had to bring about fast following a miserable campaign, first under sacked Ole Gunnar Solskjaer then Rangnick, that saw United’s worst points tally of the Premier League era.
The drones are overseen by a huge team of analystsCredit: Getty
They collected only 58, scored 57 goals and managed just 16 wins to finish sixth in the table.
But now even the drone keeping an eagle eye on stars has been modernised.
It helps give Ten Hag a unique view of every movement his players make, either in behind-closed-doors games or simply in warm-ups.
And today Ten Hag will welcome back to his hardcore training regime nine players who were in Qatar up to the quarter-finals.
But how many will be involved in Wednesday night’s return to action in the Carabao Cup fourth-round clash with Burnley he cannot be sure.
What all of them can be certain about is that there has been no softening of his stance since being “killed” in a horror start to his reign.
His side lost 2-1 at home to Brighton on the opening day of the season, before a 4-0 humiliation at Brentford.
But they go back into Premier League action against Nottingham Forest on December 27 and currently sit in fifth — just three points below fourth-placed Tottenham and with a game in hand over Antonio Conte’s men.
    Read More on The Sun
Ten Hag added: “The mentality has changed and also our way of playing changed during the season, our style.
“We are still growing of course — and now we just have to try to keep the process going.” More

Man Utd’s forgotten £50m man Wan-Bissaka wanted by West Ham in loan transfer after playing just FOUR minutes all season

WEST HAM are reportedly interested in signing Manchester United right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka on loan in the January transfer window. The Red Devils defender, 25, was told by the club at the end of last season that he would be allowed to leave given a lack of game time.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka has barely played any competitive football this seasonCredit: Getty
But he opted to stay at Old Trafford, a decision that has garnered just four minutes of football under new boss Erik ten Hag.
Now the £50million man is being monitored by a host of Premier League clubs, with SunSport revealing earlier this month that Wolves are in the frame to sign him.
Leeds have also been linked with a move for the England U21 international.
However, Manchester Evening News understand that West Ham could be the frontrunners as they have a strong relationship with Unique Sports Management – Wan-Bissaka’s representatives.

Hammers stars Michail Antonio, Aaron Cresswell and Maxwel Cornet are all represented by the same organisation.
And Wan-Bissaka could be a healthy solution for West Ham boss David Moyes as he continues to juggle right-back options.
Vladimir Coufal, Ben Johnson and Thilo Kehrer have all been trialled in the position for the East London outfit.
But West Ham’s form has been very inconsistent and they went into the World Cup break in 16th place with just four wins from 14 games.

However, they will have to fend off competition from Wan-Bissaka’s former club Crystal Palace after SunSport revealed last month that Man Utd will allow him to return if a deal can be reached.
Patrick Vieira would take their former defender back but a loan move is the only way he can afford him – and that will take some negotiating.
Palace may have to pick up all of Wan-Bissaka’s £80,000-a-week wages, making it an expensive deal despite the absence of a transfer fee.
The player will also want his long-term future sorted, adding a further complication to negotiating a return to Selhurst Park. More
