How Depay and Choupo-Moting compare this season
Manager Erik ten Hag had been interested in signing Coday Gakpo from PSV, but the Dutch forward instead opted for a move to Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool.
Now United are having to look elsewhere, and Depay and Choupo-Moting have been “mentioned as realistic targets”, according to The Athletic.
The club will be familiar with Depay after he spent two years at Old Trafford between 2015 and 2017.
He never showed his true potential on a consistent level at the club and eventually left for Lyon in 2017.

After four years with the Ligue 1 club, Depay proved to be a top-class forward and earned a move to La Liga giants Barcelona in 2021.
However, the 28-year-old has not been in manager Xavi’s plans this season, only playing three times in the league and Champions League.
The forward’s contract is set to expire at the end of the season and Barcelona are keen to move him on and get his wages off the books.
United’s other option Choupo-Moting also has his contract set to expire with Bundesliga side Bayern Munich at the end of the season.

The former Stoke City striker has become one of Europe’s best backup strikers since leaving the Potters for PSG in 2018.
The Cameroonian spent two years at the Ligue 1 giants and chipped in with nine goals in 51 appearances in all competitions.
But since his move to Bayern, he has proved to be a reliable forward, netting 29 goals in 71 appearances for the club.
At 33 years old, Choupo-Moting would be a short-term solution for United, but he could do a job for the rest of the season. More

Jack Butland to have Man Utd medical TODAY ahead of shock loan transfer from Crystal Palace

He only has six months left on his existing deal with the Eagles, although the club do have the option to extend his contract by a further year.
Man Utd are keen to bring in a back-up to David de Gea after Newcastle recalled Martin Dubravka – with Tom Heaton and Nathan Bishop their only other options.
They did consider recalling their own loanee Dean Henderson, 25, but ended up determining the best move was to let him stay at Nottingham Forest.
And according to The Athletic, Butland, who has a house in Manchester from his time at Stoke, is preparing for his Man Utd medical on Thursday.

He has not played any Premier League football so far this season and only featured 10 times in the league for Palace since joining in 2020.
The club’s No1 Vicente Guaita has largely kept him out of the first team since he arrived for £1million.
However, Butland has been unavailable for selection for much of the current campaign due to a fractured finger.
He spent two seasons as Stoke’s first-choice keeper in the Premier League between 2015 and 2018.

And he has also been capped nine times by England – the last of which came four and a half years ago.
He became the youngest ever keeper to represent the Three Lions in 2012 at 19 years 158 days.
He has also gone to two major tournaments – Euro 2012 and the 2018 World Cup.
Butland, if signed in time, could make his debut in United’s FA Cup game against Everton on Friday or their Carabao Cup clash with Charlton on Tuesday.
Man Utd have been linked with a number of top keepers such as Porto’s Diogo Costa and Borussia Monchengladbach’s Yann Sommer.
But these are seen as potential replacements for De Gea in the summer as his contract is set to expire. More

The Dutchman had been linked to Belgian side Antwerp but now it appears he could be on the move to a far more decorated side.
The Athletic report the 32-year-old is set to join Bayern Munich in a surprise deal.
He is reportedly set to undergo a medical for the free transfer switch to the Allianz Arena.
If he does move, Blind will be joining a Bayern team looking to win an 11th consecutive league title.

They sit four clear at the top of La Liga after a tricky start to the season, and can also look forward to a huge clash against French giants PSG in the Champions League next month.
Blind left Ajax in December after mutually agreeing to terminate his contract six months before it was set to expire.
His father, Danny, who held an advisory role at the club, also stepped away.
Blind won seven Eredivisie titles across his two spells with the club.

He said in an emotional Twitter post that “circumstances” was why he was leaving the club.
The Ajax legend said: “With pain in my heart and tears in my eyes I have to say goodbye to the club. Playing for Ajax is the best thing there is.
“Amsterdammers are often direct and demanding. That is also allowed, I like that and that is why I can always be honest with you. Together we have a special relationship and that was not always easy for me.
“Sometimes I had the feeling that I was playing against some of you and sometimes I felt that I was criticised just a little faster than many other players. That is absolutely not why I’m leaving.
“This is not how I imagined my end at Ajax, but due to ‘circumstances’ it turned out that way. I hope the right time will come to say goodbye to you. Make sure Ajax stays Ajax.”

Blind came through Ajax’s youth system and played for the senior side between 2008 and 2014.

Man Utd up Joao Felix transfer bid to £3.5m as they look to take star on loan… but Atletico Madrid want £10.5m

MANCHESTER UNITED have reportedly increased their offer to try and sign Atletico Madrid star Joao Felix, but remain £6.5million short of the asking price. Felix, 23, has been targeted by United after they lost Cristiano Ronaldo to Al Nassr and missed out on Cody Gakpo.
Joao Felix’s move to Man Utd is under threat unless Utd nearly treble their bidCredit: Rex
But it appears United have some way to go if they want to land the Portugal ace, who scored for Madrid against Elche in La Liga.
In fact, they will need to almost triple their current offer, according to Relevo.
United have submitted a £3.5m straight loan fee to the Spaniards with a full wage commitment.
However, Diego Simeone’s outfit want £10.5m in order to allow him to leave on loan this January.
    READ MORE ON MAN UTD
These demands could cause an issue with both Felix and United.
Felix’s relationship with Simeone is far from ideal at the moment, evidenced by his current desire to leave the club for a fresh taste of football elsewhere.
It will also cause an issue for United, who do not have the financial means to justify such a large sum for a spell which will last just six months.
Erik ten Hag has previously said the club will not “burn” through money, and considering the club overspent in the summer it is not something they can afford to do from a sporting or financial standpoint.

Ex-Chelsea and Arsenal ace Olivier Giroud has been earmarked as a target in January, though the Frenchman expects to be offered a new deal by AC Milan before his current deal expires.
United have just scored seven goals in three matches in the Premier League without conceding a single goal.
But the side’s struggles for manpower have grown more apparent after Donny van de Beek’s horror injury and the already well-documented fitness issues of Anthony Martial.
Marcus Rashford has been able to shoulder much of the goalscoring burden this year, but should he hit a dry patch it is difficult to see who may be another reliable source of goals.
Ten Hag has ruled out recalling Amad Diallo from his loan at Sunderland, while a recently returned Jadon Sancho remains some way short of match consideration. More

David de Gea ‘agrees pay cut to land new Man Utd deal’ with goalkeeper keen to see career out at Old Trafford

DAVID DE GEA is reportedly set to accept a pay cut to remain at Manchester United. The Spanish goalkeeper has been at Old Trafford since Sir Alex Ferguson swooped to sign him from Atletico Madrid in 2011.
David de Gea is ready to accept a pay cut to stay at Manchester UnitedCredit: Reuters
He has been No1 for the majority of that period having seen off the threat of Dean Henderson, who is now on loan at Nottingham Forest.
De Gea, 32, penned a new four-year contract with United back in 2019 for a mega £375,000-a-week.
That expires this June, and even though the Red Devils have the option to extend it by 12 months, they have allegedly opted against it.
The Telegraph claim that is due to his huge salary – and United “will instead enter into discussions” with the player and his representatives “in an attempt to persuade him to pen fresh terms on reduced wages”.

And this fresh report states that the stopper is prepared to accept the salary cut in order to stay.
When asked whether he would finish his career at the Theatre of Dreams, De Gea replied: “I hope so.
“I was saying this is my club, I’ve been here many, many years and it’s a huge honour to be here and I’m so happy here.
“Yeah, I’m very relaxed [about the contract], just focussed on training, performing as best as I can. But, for sure, it’s going to end in a good way.”

Despite a loss of form under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, De Gea has been back to his best this term under Erik ten Hag.
He made three impressive saves in last night’s 3-0 win over Bournemouth to seal his 12th clean sheet of the campaign.
He said afterwards: “He’s (Ten Hag) doing well. He puts every player in the same direction and we feel like a proper team.
“Everyone wants to win, everyone wants to play for this club and that’s massive.
“He brought a great spirit to the team, we are playing really well and this is the way we have to show and keep the momentum as well.
“He was happy with the clean sheet but at the same time he was a bit angry because we conceded too many chances and we were too open at the end of the game, so he was a bit angry.”
That result moved United five points clear of Tottenham, who face Crystal Palace tonight, in fourth. More

Five Man Utd stars at risk of January transfer exit with £254m worth of players including Sancho and Maguire

MANCHESTER UNITED are at risk of losing five players in January, including Jadon Sancho and Harry Maguire. If the quintuple all depart Old Trafford it would see the club sell players brought for a combined total of £254million.

The club reportedly do not have much money to spend this month due to a large summer outlay so could be forced to sell before acquiring any pricey players they want.
Here are five Red Devils stars that could leave.
    Jadon Sancho
Sancho has returned to Man Utd training after a spell practicing alone in Holland.
Manager Erik ten Hag became worried over the player’s physical and mental readiness.

He did not join Man Utd’s warm-weather camp in Spain during the World Cup and despite him being back at Carrington, he is supposedly still training alone.
The ex-Borussia Dortmund star is clearly struggling following his £73million move in the summer of 2021.
Since his arrival, Sancho has netted just eight goals in 52 appearances.
He was part of Ten Hag’s plans at the beginning of the season but it now feels like a long way back for him to regain a place in the starting XI.

Especially with Alejandro Garnacho being promoted to the first-team and impressing.
Sancho could benefit from a move away from Man Utd to rediscover all the talent he showed in the Bundesliga.
    Harry Maguire
Maguire may have started Man Utd’s last game, the win over Bournemouth, but he is no longer part of the first choice centre-back pairing.
Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez are Ten Hag’s go to guys at the back and the £80million England star is left on the bench regularly.
The club captain lost his first-team spot just two games into the season after defeats versus Brighton and Brentford.
He has gone on to feature 12 times in all competitions for United this campaign and he impressed at the World Cup in Qatar.
However, the 29-year-old may not be satisfied with sitting on the bench and he has been linked with a move away.
Club legend Rio Ferdinand has urged him to leave and Maguire has rumoured suitors in Tottenham, Newcastle, West Ham and Aston Villa.
    Aaron Wan-Bissaka
Aaron Wan-Bissaka joined the club from Crystal Palace in 2019 for a fee of £45million, with £5million in add-ons.
Despite the plan to make the 25-year-old United’s long-term right-back, his days at Old Trafford seem numbered.

Ten Hag prefers Diogo Dalot in defence and Wan-Bissaka has featured just five times this season.
He was close to departing in the summer but the club could not sign a replacement, so he stayed.
His contract runs out in 18 months, although there is a one-year extension option.
A return to Crystal Palace is on the table, as is a reported potential loan transfer to West Ham.
    Scott McTominay
Scott McTominay has been at Manchester United since the age of five, but there is a chance he could leave in January.
The Scottish star has lost his place in the starting XI due to the arrival of Casemiro.

The Brazilian has been fantastic partnering Christian Eriksen in midfield and Fred can also provide back-up for them.
Man Utd have been linked with the likes of Frenkie de Jong and Enzo Fernandez in recent months.
For the club to be able to afford and have space for those possible signings, McTominay could have to make way.
    Anthony Martial
Anthony Martial is enjoying a spell in the side, playing as the No.9 after Cristiano Ronaldo’s acrimonious exit.
United are in the market for a new out-and-out striker despite the Frenchman’s positive run of form.

Man Utd have a tough run of games
Goncalo Ramos, Joao Felix and Memphis Depay have been rumoured to be on Ten Hag’s shortlist.
With little budget for this month’s window, United are eyeing loan deals.
    Read More on The Sun
However, if they sign someone permanently then they could raise funds using Martial.
The 27-year-old joined Man Utd in 2015 from Monaco for a fee of £36million and since then he has met £15.4million worth of add-ons for goals scored and France national team caps won. More

How Man Utd could line up with Frenkie de Jong, Olivier Giroud and Joao Felix after January transfer spree

One of those is Frenkie de Jong, who turned down the opportunity to move to Old Trafford in the previous transfer window.
Barcelona accepted a £71.5million bid for the midfielder but he was determined to stay in Catalonia.
However reports now claim the Dutchman is open to a switch to United following the club’s resurgent form under his former manager, Erik ten Hag.
De Jong, 25, could slot into the Red Devils midfield alongside Casemiro, who has impressed since his summer arrival from Real Madrid.

And United could have a fresh attack if two January targets join before the window closes.
United like the look of Atletico Madrid striker Joao Felix and have been monitoring his situation since the summer.
Arsenal and Chelsea are also interested in signing the 23-year-old but Atletico are looking to recoup the £113m they spent on him in 2019.

The 34-year-old Gladbach goalkeeper emerged on United’s radar last month amid doubts over David De Gea’s future.
Erik ten Hag’s current No1 is out of contract this year and has to accept a huge cut on his £350,000-a-week wages to remain.
