And an additional forward could help the Red Devils over the line in their pursuit of a place in the top four.
Inter Milan’s Edin Dzeko, 36, Burnley’s Wout Weghorst, 30, and AC Milan’s Olivier Giroud, 36, have all been linked with moves to Old Trafford.
But how do they stack up compared with one another?
SunSport has taken a look at their statistics since the start of last season.

How Dzeko, Giroud and Weghorst compare since the start of last season
Dzeko and Weghorst have played almost the exact same number of matches – with just one between them at 53 and 54 – while Giroud has managed 44.
Inter man Dzeko leads the way in the goalscoring charts with 20 as the other two are locked together on 16.
Weghorst edges things when it comes to assists – the Burnley loanee registering eight compared with Dzeko’s seven and Giroud’s six.
Dzeko has the best shot conversion rate and has also registered the most attempts at 125.

But of those efforts, Weghorst has managed the most on target.
Giroud comes third in most of the statistical comparisons and “chances created” is no different.
The former Arsenal man has laid on 40 opportunities for his team-mates, with Dzeko on 51 and Weghorst 49.
But Giroud’s most impressive numbers come in the air.
While Weghorst has competed in the most aerial duels, Giroud has a win percentage of 64 compared to Weghorst’s 46 and Dzeko’s 54.
Finally, when it comes to touches in their respective games, Weghorst has had 200 more than Dzeko in just one more match.
Giroud has had a further 560 less, albeit in 10 fewer appearances.
Man Utd currently sit fourth in the Premier League table, two points ahead of Tottenham in fifth but nine off leaders Arsenal.
And if they are to close the gap, what are the chances of them turning to a former Gunner to help them do it? More

Man Utd ‘have Wout Weghorst transfer bid REJECTED by Besiktas as they prepare new offer’

He has scored nine goals in 18 appearances for Besiktas – who have a deal with Vincent Kompany’s side to keep him until the end of the season.
According to Manchester Evening News, Burnley received an offer from Man Utd for Weghorst which they passed onto Besiktas.
But the Champions League outfit rejected the proposal and have insisted they want to keep the ex-Wolfsburg man until the summer.
Man Utd are understood to be working on a compensation package that would convince Besiktas to end Weghorst’s loan in the January window.

The Super Lig side also have a £12million option to buy him at the end of the campain.
But Weghorst is believed to be keen on the move to Old Trafford and was accused by Besiktas’ club president of saying goodbye to the fans during his goal celebration at the weekend.
Negotiations are taking place for United to pay Burnley a fee which would then be handed over to Besiktas to ensure the termination of his loan.
The Premier League side would then return to the table with Burnley to agree a short-term loan deal for Weghorst until the end of the season.

There is no recall option in the loan contract between Burnley and Besiktas, so United need the Turkish outfit to agree or they will fail in their pursuit of the striker.
Erik ten Hag is keen to bring in another forward this month following the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo.
Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford are currently his only options to lead the line.
And Weghorst, who scored a brace for Netherlands against Argentina in their World Cup quarter-final defeat, has been identified as a target.
Eden Dzeko and Olivier Giroud have also been mooted as alternative options. More

Man Utd and Tottenham on alert over shock Jordan Pickford transfer with Everton star in deadlock talks over pay-rise

JORDAN Pickford has told Everton he wants to STAY at the club, SunSport can reveal. But the England number one and the Merseyside giants are deadlocked in a row over pay.
Jordan Pickford is in high demandCredit: Getty
And that has alerted Manchester United and Tottenham, who are now both willing to nearly double his £100,000 wages to secure his signature.
A source told SunSport: “Jordan wants to stay at Everton.
“He loves the place, and is settled in the area he lives. But the club is not willing to meet the wage increase he is asking for.
“The player and his agent have asked Bill Kenwright and the board to at least meet them halfway.

“But the club is only willing to offer him a few thousand a week more than he’s currently earning.
“The big problem they have is, of course, the fact that relegation is looming over their heads.
“It means they can’t be budgeting for big wage increases when they might be in the Championship in 12 months time.
“Despite the risk of going down, Jordan is still willing to commit his future to the club now.

“He thinks he can help them get out of the mess they are in, and move forward.
“Lampard is keen to get it resolved too because he thinks it would send a message to the fans and players that they are determined to keep their best players.”

Everton are in a huge slump at present after being KOd from the FA Cup following a 3-1 defeat at United on Friday night.
They were also thumped 4-1 at home to Brighton in the Premier League the week before.
And boss Frank Lampard is now fighting for his job ahead of a crunch clash against Southampton this weekend.
But the tug-of-war over Pickford is what is alerting other Premier League clubs.
Our source added: “Manchester United and Spurs both now think they can get the player and are both willing to increase his wages by nearly £100,000 a week on top of what he already gets.
“To them, Pickford is a player who could come in for five years and be the number one, so it’s a sound investment.
“There may too still be interest from abroad, but if Jordan moves he’d prefer to stay in England because he has a young family and is settled here.”

I once snuck into Old Trafford dressed as a steward… now I’m back as Charlton boss, says Man Utd superfan Dean Holden

MANCHESTER UNITED’S biggest fan will arguably be sitting in the Charlton dugout at Old Trafford on Tuesday night. For Addicks boss Dean Holden is a ‘forever Red’, a proud season ticket holder for 30 years.

And someone who also played for the club at junior level.
But that deep connection will not stop Greater Manchester-born Holden from wanting to oust his heroes from the Carabao Cup.
The two clubs meet in a quarter-final clash — and this time Holden will not have to disguise himself as a fake steward to watch the tie, either.
Instead, he will proudly walk out from the tunnel where he once “worked” at a Champions League semi-final second leg clash with Borussia Dortmund.
    READ MORE ON MAN UTD
Holden, 43, recalled: “My dad, uncle and brother-in-law were all stewards at Old Trafford.
“I got let down once with a ticket for the Champions League game with Borussia Dortmund in 1997.
“However, one of the stewards didn’t turn up for the game.
“So, there was a spare hi-vis jacket and radio. I wore them and went and sat next to my old man by the tunnel.

“God knows what I would’ve done had there been a pitch invasion!”
Holden has used that light touch and sense of adventure to help Charlton recover from a poor season following his appointment last month.
Now after two successive wins in League One, including the 2-1 defeat of Lincoln on Saturday which moved them up to 12th place in the table, the club are starting to believe.
So can they really KO United? Holden said: “I’ve told my players, ‘if you don’t believe it can happen, it won’t happen’.
“I’m not just talking about beating Man United, either. It applies to everything.
“My old man has been a United supporter all his life.
“So it will be special for him also to see me coming out of the tunnel.
“Old Trafford is the best stadium in the world, and we’re playing one of the best clubs in the world. My Charlton players can enjoy it, though — it’s a free hit for them.”
Holden’s United dream came true when he also played for United’s junior teams before joining Bolton as a teenager.
United are in my blood. If we don’t beat them on Tuesday, I hope they win the competition.
He recalled: “I played alongside Wes Brown and current Leyton Orient boss, Richie Wellens.
“United are in my blood. If we don’t beat them on Tuesday, I hope they win the competition.
“I shall definitely try for a chat with Erik ten Hag, United’s manager. He has changed the culture at the club.
“You can see that by the way he handled Ronaldo and also dropped Marcus Rashford for a disciplinary reason.
“He’s put standards in place, and he’s got the team playing with confidence. He’s the right man for the job.”
Holden is not the only Charlton figure with a United connection.
Winger Corey Blackett-Taylor, who scored the club’s second goal after Scott Fraser’s opener against Lincoln at the Valley, has known first-hand about red-hot United striker Rashford since he was a kid.
Blackett-Taylor, 25, said: “When I was nine or 10 in Aston Villa’s academy, we used to play against Rashford and Manchester United.

“We all knew he was going to be a player. In those days, he played more as a No 10 or in centre midfield.”
He added: “The game at Old Trafford is definitely winnable. I’ve never played there before and we’re going to enjoy it and express ourselves.” More

Man Utd told to ‘break the bank’ for Harry Kane transfer who can make them Champions League contenders, says Paul Merson

The Portuguese striker left the club following his explosive interview with Piers Morgan.
This has left Manchester United short of options upfront and former Arsenal star Paul Merson believes they should go all out for Kane.
The England international is a prolific goalscorer in the Premier League having netted 265 goals and 62 assists across 412 games for Spurs.
And Merson thinks that a potential signing of Kane would help them close the gap to cross-city rivals Manchester City.
    READ MORE ON MAN UTD
He told the Daily Star: “In an age where clubs spend money for fun and world-class centre-forwards are a rarity, I would find it crazy if Manchester United did not break the bank for Harry Kane.
“You can look all around the world, rack your brains and round up every scout within your network and the answer is right there in front of you. There is nobody that comes close to Kane that is currently available.
“If United ever want to catch Manchester City, they’ve got to go and get Kane. Everybody wants a striker and is searching far and wide but the best centre-forward is staring everybody in the face.
“He plays for a team in Tottenham that are going to win absolutely nothing and surely, sooner or later his head is going to be turned by a move again.

“I don’t know what I’m missing here. Even if he costs £150million and it’s a four or five-year contract, you are buying over 100 goals. Who else is going to give you that?”
Merson also revealed that he thinks Kane would be able to produce the same impact as Erling Haaland if he was at Manchester City.
He goes as far to say that if the Red Devils signed Kane that they would have a chance to win the Champions League.
He added: “Everyone talks about Erling Haaland but for me, Kane could deliver similar numbers in that Manchester City team and even add more assists.
“Call me silly but Kane would even give United a chance of winning the Champions League in my opinion.
“He is a machine. Tottenham are only where they are because of Harry Kane, it really is that simple. He is the difference.” More

It suggests the Red Devils are close to landing Holland forward Weghorst on loan from Burnley, following his temporary spell in Turkey.
United terminated Ronaldo’s contract in November – leading to a rollercoaster of rumours and heated transfer speculation.
Old Trafford boss Erik ten Hag made it clear he wanted more firepower.
And he’s turned to Weghorst, the giant hitman who famously struck twice late on as a sub in the World Cup quarter-final against Argentina.

Holland’s direct play once he came on snatched a 2-2 draw, only for eventual tournament winners Argentina to triumph 4-3 on penalties.
Meanwhile, Cameroon skipper Aboubakar was the player who made way when legend Ronaldo moved to Al-Nassr last week.
Saudi League rules limit each club to registering eight foreign players.
And Besiktas reportedly want the 30-year-old back for a THIRD spell.

He originally joined on loan from Porto in 2019 and returned a year later in a permanent deal.
If Weghorst does exit Turkey for Old Trafford, it won’t stop Ten Hag targeting at least one more attacking signing this month.
But he lost out to Liverpool for PSV’s Holland wideman Cody Gakpo.
And it’s claimed the Red Devils are baulking at Atletico Madrid’s demands over Joao Felix.

Weghorst joined Burnley last season before their relegation and was loaned to Besiktas in the summer transfer window.
His loan move was due to last the entirety of the season.
The 30-year-old striker has done well in Turkey, scoring eight goals and assisting four in his 16 appearances in the Super Lig.
He has become a vital part of the team this season, and Besiktas will want to keep hold of him or, as Kazanci insists, be compensated for having his loan cut short.

He said: “If Man Utd want Weghorst, they’ve to discuss first with Burnley, who will then contact us.
“If we accept, the loan will be terminated. Otherwise, it will continue until June.
“He cannot leave like this. There will have to be compensation for us.”
This will make the deal more complicated for Manchester United to complete.

Weghorst scored the winner for the Turkish outfit in their 2-1 victory over Kasimpasa on Saturday.
After scoring, the player appeared to wave goodbye to the fans amid the speculation of a move to Manchester.
And his manager Senol Gunes took this as the Netherlands international bidding farewell, but insisted that Weghorst must speak to the club about his situation.
Following the win at the weekend, the Besiktas head coach said: “Weghorst is an important player for us.
“It is not enough to say goodbye to the audience. He also needs to talk to the club. I have heard of such a development, but it is not clear.
