Loan moves and the wrong mentality destroyed my form at Man Utd, but I rebuilt my career, says Federico Macheda

FEDERICO MACHEDA has admitted that loan moves and the wrong mentality prevented him from becoming a Manchester United star.Few have burst on to the scene like the Italian, who struck two winners in his first two games for the club.

Sir Alex Ferguson rang the Italian in 2020 to check up on his progress
A stunning injury-time effort against Aston Villa in April 2009 was followed up by a sharp finish at Sunderland a week later.
Alas, the Italian failed to live up to his early promise and has opened up on his rise, fall, and rise again.
After almost two years in the United set-up, he was sent on loan to Sampdoria for a spell that hammered his confidence.
Macheda, 31, told the Mail: “Those six months marred my career because they tried to kill me as a footballer.

“I started to doubt myself a little bit.
“We were fighting relegation and being attacked by people.
“They thought because I was from Manchester United I was going to save them, but I wasn’t ready.
“I was still a young guy. It wasn’t working and I wasn’t the one to make it work.”

The striker spent time at Queens Park Rangers, Stuttgart, Doncaster and Birmingham before leaving for Cardiff in 2014.
A quiet stint in South Wales was followed by two years back in Italy before finding his feet with Panathinaikos.
A record of 40 goals in 116 games for the Greek outfit was a very respectable return and Macheda acknowledged how tough it was to hit form again.
He has since moved to Turkish Süper Lig club Ankaragücü, but is yet to score this season.
He said: “It hasn’t been as good as I had hoped but I’ve learned a lot.
“I’ve overcome a lot of things in my career.
“Of course, I wish it could have gone another way, with the way it started and the way it was going.
If I could go back, I wouldn’t swap. I wouldn’t change that moment… maybe it came too soonFederico Macheda
“I was very down and I managed to turn things around and that isn’t easy in football, especially after the path I’ve had.
“But if I could go back, I wouldn’t swap. I wouldn’t change that moment. Maybe it came too soon, but it’s something that every United fan will remember.”
Nowadays, the shirt and a photo of his debut winner hang in the family home in Italy and Sir Alex Ferguson even called him up in 2020 to check on his former prodigy.
Macheda has admitted that he perhaps was not well equipped to deal with the demanding life of a professional footballer.
That Villa goal came at the tender age of 17 and he would fail to ‘understand’ what was needed when the going got tough.
He said: “I think I could have done more.
“I was working in an amazing team and I feel I let myself down. The whole picture, not just one thing.
“The way of playing, looking after my body, my life.
“The way of thinking, because when you don’t play you have to fight and I was finding excuses.
“I had the wrong reaction and I wasn’t working as hard as I should have done.
“When you’re young, you don’t understand many things. If I had the mentality I have now, things could have been much different for me.”

Man Utd legend Paul Scholes launches X-rated cryptic rant over transfers as club struggle to sign players in January

PAUL SCHOLES hit out at critics of Manchester United’s recruitment following the club’s struggles this month.United have found it difficult to buy players in January after splashing out big fees on Casemiro, Antony and Lisandro Martinez last summer.
Paul Scholes says it is wrong to blame United’s failures on transfer activityCredit: PA
That has limited the club to the loan signings of Wout Weghorst and Jack Butland, leading some to question United’s recruitment.
United’s lack of depth was highlighted in the 3-2 defeat to Arsenal on Sunday but Scholes believes the criticism is unfair.
He took to Instagram writing: “Here we go again, managers and every other f***er blaming failure on recruitment…
“I don’t see these people complaining when they sign the players, I see nothing but excitement at new players coming through the door.

“Just because you like them as players already it doesn’t mean you don’t have to improve them as footballers and people.
“PS… just covering my a*** if @salfordcityfc don’t have a successful season!! Laters!!”
The Red Devils look unlikely to make a big transfer splash this month but they are lining up some big names for the summer.
Tottenham star Harry Kane is reportedly high on their list of targets with the England captain out of contract in 2024.

Erik ten Hag tells Marcus Rashford to snub PSG transfer and help make Man Utd the best team in the WORLD again

MARCUS RASHFORD has been told to stick with Manchester United and help make them the best team in the world again. The striker has 18 months left on his contract with the club trying to tie him to a new long-term deal.
Marcus Rashford has been sensational since the arrival of Erik ten HagCredit: AFP
Paris Saint-Germain have already made known their interest in the in-form 25-year-old.
But Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag insists the local lad can achieve all he wants in football if he sticks with the club where he grew up.
Ten Hag said: “I hope that all our players can have interest from clubs because that means you are doing a good job, that the team is outperforming so that is what we are aiming for.
“Then, I would say this is the best place to be because we want to construct the best team, first in England, then in Europe, then in the world.”
    READ MORE ON MAN UTD
And Ten Hag says the way he is constructing that team is perfect for Rashford and the club.
He said: “He understands Man Utd is his club, that’s first, but also, in this environment, in this team, he is playing his best football.
“He is improving and that is about him because he’s working on the good things.
“He is giving 100 per cent energy in it and he has a good plan and also in this team he can bring his qualities.

“So this team can help him be in the right position and to score goals, which he is good at. This team is constructed so that his qualities come to the fore and he knows that.
“But, definitely yes, he is important for us and if we want to get the success we want, we need him.”
They certainly would like one or two of his goals on Wednesday night at the City Ground in their Carabao Cup semi-final first leg against Nottingham Forest as he looks to add to his 17 for the season.
Of those, nine have come in the last ten games since returning from the World Cup where he scored three for England.
The Red Devils could do with Antony being on song as well after he came in for criticism during United’s 3-2 defeat to Arsenal at the Emirates on Sunday.
Ten Hag said: “He can do better.
“I see space for improvement and we want him to be more direct, but the team is performing better if he is on the pitch and that is a good thing, a good base to build further on.”
United take on Forest as they target a Wembley final against either Newcastle or Southampton and ending a trophy drought that stretches back to the Europa League triumph under Jose Mourinho in 2017.
That barren run equals an unwanted 40-year record for the club after going without silverware between their FA Cup successes of 1977 and 1983.
They have lost two finals since that 2017 triumph, in the FA Cup and Europa League, and fallen at the semi-final stage a further four times.
Ten Hag said: “It is too long that this club didn’t win a trophy and it belongs to this club to win trophies so we have to get back on track.
“It’s the best feeling you can have, winning a trophy, and I have the luck in my career to win some trophies and it’s magnificent, especially for the fans, it’s so great.
“The fans here have some experience of this, especially the older ones.
“But in this period Manchester United haven’t won trophies, it is too long ago. We are aware of that fact and we have to do it again.”
Ten Hag says his Manchester United players will be motivated by a red hot atmosphere at The City Ground in their first game there for 24 years.
Their last visit in 1999 saw the Red Devils run out 8-1 winners with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer coming on as a substitute to score four.
Ten Hag will be expecting a tighter game on Wednesday evening before a packed crowd on the banks of The Trent.
He said: “It’s a long time ago United played there and when there is a fanatical audience it is nice to play in front of.

“It will be a good atmosphere and I think it will motivate the players and we have to get ready for that.”

Malo Gusto ‘wants to join Chelsea ahead of Man Utd transfer as Blues prepare second bid after failed £18m offer’

Chelsea have identified Gusto, 19, as the successor to iconic right-back Cesar Azpilicueta.
Todd Boehly has already signed six players this month in a bid to back under-fire Graham Potter.
But the American chief wants more incomings before a new Uefa rule banning long-term contracts kicks in.
And Gusto is top of the list for Chelsea along with a new central midfielder.

The teenager is rated as one of the brightest young talents in French football, prompting the Blues to launch an £18m bid yesterday.
The offer was turned down by Lyon, who are desperate to keep Gusto despite additional interest from Man United.
However, that could prove hard as Foot Mercato claims Gusto is desperate to join Chelsea regardless of United’s presence.
Potter is equally keen to sign Gusto as competition for injury-prone star Reece James.

And it’s reckoned Chelsea are now preparing a new bid for the young defender worth between £27m and £35m.
Should he move to Stamford Bridge, Gusto would become the latest French star to be snapped up by Chelsea.
The Blues currently boast three Les Bleus aces in N’Golo Kante, Wesley Fofana and new centre-back Benoit Badiashile.
Before them, attackers like Olivier Giroud, Nicolas Anelka and Florent Malouda lit up west London.
And there have been further fan favourites in Claude Makelele, Marcel Desailly and Frank Leboeuf.
But there have also been several French flops at the Bridge, including Tiemoue Bakayoko, Loic Remy and Lassana Diarra.
Others like William Gallas and Kurt Zouma evoked mixed feelings when they respectively joined rivals Arsenal and West Ham.
And Chelsea fans will be hoping Gusto is nothing but a sure-fire hit should he make the switch. More

Man Utd ‘are ready to cash in on Harry Maguire and Scott McTominay’ as Erik ten Hag targets transfer rebuild

TalkSport claims the Red Devils must sell before they can invest heavily in new recruits due to Financial Fair Player rules.
United have no intention of shaking up their squad this month, with just a week remaining in the window.
But Ten Hag has made it clear he intends to sweep away the dead wood to bring in some of his own signings this summer, with Chelsea target Malo Gusto on his list.
And one player in the firing line is axed captain Maguire.

The centre-back has started just four Premier League games this season, and is now fifth-choice in his position after Luke Shaw’s switch from the left.
West Ham are known to be keen after failing with a loan bid for Maguire last week.
And his exit would open the door for Ten Hag to appoint a new skipper.
As for McTominay, he too finds himself down the pecking order at Old Trafford.

Newcastle are hoping to take the Scot off United’s hands.
But after starting in Sunday’s narrow 3-2 defeat at Arsenal, McTominay could yet convince Ten Hag he still has a future at the club.
Indeed, Ten Hag hailed the anchorman ahead of the game, hinting the ace still has a chance of staying.
United’s boss said: “Scott can do the job, he’s a great player for our squad. He’s a great player for this team and I think he’s also making a good development.” More

How Man Utd could line up with Harry Kane as Erik ten Hag ‘makes Tottenham star No1 summer transfer target’

HARRY KANE is said to be Erik ten Hag’s No1 summer transfer target at Manchester United. The Old Trafford boss will prioritise a new centre forward at the end of the season.

A striker was on the wish list last year but the club stuck with Cristiano Ronaldo while Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial can fill in up top – although both are better suited out wide.
Wout Weghort arrived this month on loan until June but is very much a short-term gap filler.
And reports suggest Ten Hag will go all out to land Tottenham and England sensation Kane.
The Three Lions skipper equalled Jimmy Greaves’ Spurs tally of 266 goals for the North London side with the winner at Fulham.
    READ MORE ON MAN UTD
And despite suggestions he may make a U-turn and sign a new contract at the £1billion stadium, Red Devils fans will be hoping the next deal he puts his signature on will be at the Theatre of Dreams.
But how would United line up with Kane in the side next season should he make the switch to the north-west?
The obvious selection would be to see Kane play up front on his own in Ten Hag’s favoured 4-2-3-1 formation.
He would operate as the lone central striker supported by three attack-minded players – such as Rashford, Bruno Fernandes and Antony.

Martial and Jadon Sancho could also fill the wide slots in a rotated line-up.
Behind the front four would be Casemiro with Christian Eriksen as the first choice ahead of Scott McTominay and Fred.
And Ten Hag’s favoured back four may well be Diogo Dalot, Raphael Varane, Lisandro Martinez and Luke Shaw with David De Gea in goal.
An alternative option, albeit unlikely, may see Kane deployed up front alongside Rashford in a two-up-top system, changing the shape slightly.
United have been linked with plenty of transfers in the summer – and should they land some, they could also slot into the side.
Declan Rice could replace Eriksen in midfield, Marco Reus may join the attack, Dean Henderson could finally claim the No1 spot in goal and the addition of Dutch defenders Jurrien Timber and Denzel Dumfries could prompt a shock change of shape to a back five.

Savage, son of ex-Leicester and Blackburn midfielder Robbie, has attracted interest from a number of EFL clubs.
But the Wales Under-21 international is in line to make the move to the New Lawn in Gloucestershire and help 24th-placed Forest Green in their battle against relegation.
Savage has made one senior appearance for United as a substitute in the Champions League 1-1 draw against Young Boys in December 2021.
After training with Ipswich in April last year, he was also on the bench under Ralf Rangnick for the Red Devils’ final game of last season in a 1-0 loss at Crystal Palace.

Savage went on the pre-season tour of Australia and Asia and caught the eye of new manager Erik ten Hag.
During the World Cup, midfielder Savage also played in United’s winter friendlies against LaLiga outfits Cadiz and Real Betis on their mid-season break to Spain.

Savage is a box-to-box midfielder who loves a tackle and isn’t afraid to get stuck in.
However, he’s got a bit more to his game in terms of being a creative spark and is a good passer of the ball.

Since making his debut in 2017, McTominay has made 194 appearances for his boyhood club, scoring 18 and assisting five.
But McTominay has no intention of changing the shirt number given to him as a Man Utd youngster – and he’s one of many football stars rocking bizarre numbers.
In fact, he says he’s obsessed with the No39 and he can’t “get it out” of his head.
Speaking to ManUtd.com on why he refuses to change numbers, McTominay said: “No39 obviously is special, when you first get your number.
