It was the first time Ten Hag had spoken to Greenwood, 21, since taking over as United boss last summer.
All previous contact with the club, which suspended Greenwood after his arrest in January 2022, had been through a third party.
Earlier this month we revealed how the Crown Prosecution Service had withdrawn charges of attempted rape, actual bodily harm and coercive or controlling behaviour.
It came after 12 witnesses, including the woman at the centre of the allegations, refused to co-operate.

Greenwood is still unable to play for United or train while the Red Devils  carry out an internal probe.
But a source said: “Mason has spent a long time with very little — if any — contact from the club. As and when they were in touch, it was never direct and always through a third party. So for the manager to call him  was a big step for him and one he really appreciated.
“The manager enquired how he was feeling physically and mentally and said he was pleased the charges had been dropped.
“He thought it was the right thing to do to get in touch with Mason.

“But he was clear it will be the club rather than him which will decide if Mason can play for United again.”
They continued: “Mason’s spirits were lifted by it. He has been at United since he was six and just wants to get back to playing football for them.
“He is happiest with a ball at his feet and wants to get his career back on track.
“But he knows the club has a massive decision to make.”
Greenwood, who earns around £100,000-a-week, is still contracted to United until 2025.
Prior to his arrest, he was valued at around £50million and regarded as one of European football’s hottest young talents.
But Manchester United’s women’s players reportedly don’t want him to return to the club.
According to reports in The Athletic, “the feeling is strong” amongst the team that Greenwood should be let go.
This feeling is reportedly even shared amongst his teammates in the men’s dressing room, who are not all in favour of having him back.
Fans are also said to be uncertain of welcoming Greenwood back to the club despite charges being dropped.
Some have even demanded that he be released from his contract.
He first kicked a ball competitively aged five when  dad Andrew, 53, took him to local youth club Idle Juniors FC.
He made his debut after his sixth birthday, scoring ten goals.
United’s academy scouts offered him a place at  their development centre in Halifax, West Yorks.
Greenwood was pictured with Red Devils legend Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who would later become his manager, at United’s Cliff training ground.
In 2018 then manager Jose Mourinho picked the 16-year-old for a pre-season US tour.
A few months later he signed his first pro contract for £800 a week.
The talented striker made his first team debut in March 2019. Prior to his arrest, Greenwood was valued at  £50million.
He last played  on January 22, 2022 in a 1-0 Premier League win  against West Ham.
Greenwood has made 129 appearances for United, scoring 35 goals and winning one England cap.
Following his arrest he was dropped from a multi-million pound boot deal by Nike.

And EA Sports also removed him from the popular FIFA 22 video game.
Earlier this week Nike said it had no plans to work with Greenwood while United bosses are believed to be sounding out sponsors for their views on whether he could play again. More

Man Utd and Arsenal transfer blow as Barcelona president rules out Ansu Fati exit as interest confirmed

But Barcelona president Joan Laporta has poured cold water on any chances of the forward leaving in the summer.
Laporta said: “We are not thinking of selling Ansu Fati as of now, he’s loved here, then I cannot predict the future.”
He added: “His agent told us there are clubs keen on signing Ansu Fati yes.”
“It is clear that he wants to succeed here at Barca.”
The summer arrivals of Raphinha and Robert Lewandowski along with Fati’s recovery from a long term injury have seen him given limited chances to impress.
The La Masia product has made 20 appearances in LaLiga this season scoring three goals as Xavi’s men lead Real Madrid by seven points.
Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano had previously reported that Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool were the Premier League clubs tracking Fati’s situation for this summer.
The Spaniard, who inherited the No10 shirt when Lionel Messi departed for PSG, is a versatile forward who can play in a number of positions across the front line.

Despite the Catalan giants pulling multiple financial levers they are still in deep financial trouble.
Fati has a £898million release clause in his contract but a big offer from any potential suitors could tempt Barcelona to cash in to ease their financial woes. More

Man Utd boss Ten Hag admits he is open to change in football just days after reviled European Super League re-emerged

ERIK TEN HAG says he is open to change in football after the controversial European Super League reared its head again this week. The potential of a breakaway movement caused fan outrage when Manchester United joined a number of other top English and European clubs in a proposed new league.

That was quickly shelved due to the objections but this week further plans emerged with a competition involving 60-80 teams with promotion and relegation rather than the original closed shop 20.
While Ten Hag was not talking about any specific proposal he said he would look at any new ideas.
United boss Ten Hag said: “I think the current structure is good but there will always be initiatives to make it better, to make the football better and that is what life is.
“People always want to construct better, which is a good thing because if it is in favour of the football, it is always good.

“I’m aware of the dynamic of what’s going on in sections but if I see they’re coming up with new ideas I have to have a look at it and I will make an opinion.”
Ten Hag admits that ultimately any decision will be taken out of managers’ hands.

Ten Hag would, however, certainly oppose any change that clogged the fixture list up any further.
He believes this season’s schedule, which has included a World Cup in November and December, is now having a knock-on effect on players.

The PSG star slammed Weghorst following Argentina’s victory over Holland at the World Cup.
Despite Messi’s team progressing to the semi-finals, tempers flared at the end of the contest and the legend was left far from happy.
And in his post-match interview, with Weghorst walking close to the camera, Messi furiously told him to clear off.
He said: “Who are you looking at, stupid? Go ahead, you stupid.”

And Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez, who’s a team-mate of both, has made a little fun out of the situation.
According to SPORT, he now calls Weghorst “Bobo” which means fool or idiot in Spanish.
But things aren’t exactly going great for the Dutchman on the pitch.
He recently scored his first Manchester United goal in the Carabao Cup tie with Nottingham Forest.

But that remains his only goal in his seven Red Devils appearances.
He’s averaging fewer shots per 90 minutes in a United shirt than the likes of Scott McTominay and Diogo Dalot.
And Erik ten Hag is considering dropping him from the team.
Weghorst failed to hit the net once more against Leeds on Wednesday and was hauled off around the hour mark for the third game running. More

Raya, who arrived at the Bees in 2019 and helped them to win promotion from the Championship two years later, is on the wishlists of Premier League rivals Tottenham, Manchester United and Chelsea.
He is currently trying to help Brentford, who sit seventh in the top-flight ahead of Saturday’s trip to leaders Arsenal, qualify for Europe for the first time in their history.

“I’m really, really happy and right now I’m just thinking about doing the best for the team and trying to push for Europe.
“I was offered a new contract last year and one in January but we didn’t reach an agreement. I would like to see what happens in summer, however I’m happy at Brentford.
“For now a new contract is secondary, the most important thing is the team and the games. We’ll see where we are in May.
“You never know what’s around the corner. There’s nothing I can say about what’s going to happen in the summer. I don’t even know what’s going to happen on Saturday.”

When quizzed about the reported clubs keen on him, Raya replied: “I’m not sure if it’s interest, people talking or my name being thrown around.

“It’s always going to be home – no matter what. I’m in one of the happiest times of my career. I’m a happy guy, you will never see me moaning. Football is my life, so I do what I love.
“The manager has done a magnificent job with the team. He doesn’t want any egos.

How Man Utd could line up with academy talent ONLY with Tom Heaton in goal and Marcus Rashford leading the line

MANCHESTER UNITED is well known for its talent development and willingness to give youngsters a chance in the senior team. In fact, United boast a proud record of featuring an academy player in every matchday squad for over 85 years.

Tom Heaton would also feature in an academy only teamCredit: Getty
Since that run began in 1937, the club have seen a plethora of talent come through the ranks, including the Busby babes and the Class of 92.
In keeping with tradition, Erik ten Hag has been utilising members from the academy, with some players taking leading roles in his United revolution.
But how might United’s current academy talent line up if they were asked to play together? And for the sake of parity, we will not be using players currently on loan from the club.
Starting in goal, 36-year-old Tom Heaton would be handed the gloves.

After initial promotion to the first team at in 2004, Heaton was with Man Utd until 2010 when he left on a free transfer.
He then returned to the club in 2021 with a bank of Prem experience behind him.
The back four will consist of just one senior star, Brandon Williams, who can play either full-back position.
He would likely play alongside right-back Marc Jurado and centre-back duo Rhys Bennett and Tyler Fredricson, with the latter included in United’s B-list for the Europa League.

Here’s how the United academy XI might look on paper
In midfield, Scott McTominay would anchor alongside 17-year-old Kobbie Mainoo.
Mainoo has featured twice under Ten Hag this season, getting minutes in both cup competitions. Mainoo also signed a new long-term contract with the Red Devils yesterday.
Zidane Iqbal would complete this team’s midfield but up front, some familiar names come to the fore.
Anthony Elanga and Alejandro Garnacho would provide the width in support of talisman Marcus Rashford.
Rashford has netted 20 goals in all competitions this season.
Garnacho came under scrutiny during his most recent performance against Leeds despite a solid display which saw a goal attempt cleared off the line by Maximilian Wober.
But it seems he puts more pressure on himself than anyone else after appearing to like a Tweet suggesting he is not ready to start.
He will have a chance to redeem himself when United face Leeds again at the weekend.
Facundo Pellistri replaced him in the second half of that game and despite featuring in the United academy, is not an academy prospect.

Despite coming from the academy, Mason Greenwood has been excluded from the eligibility to play with his future at the club uncertain.

It’s been nearly a decade since United last won the title, with fans having to witness rivals Manchester City and Liverpool enjoy great success in the meantime.
But pundit and Liverpool legend Carragher has revealed his fears that United are on their way back.
He told The Overlap: “It does feel different to me under Erik ten Hag.
“I always felt there was a negativity around the previous managers. With Jose Mourinho it felt like there were problems between him and the board.

“With Louis van Gaal, I’m not sure the fans were ever on board with his style of football. And with Ole [Gunnar Solskjaer], no one ever thought he would be a manager who could win United a title.
“But now it feels like they’ve got a manager who knows what he’s doing. Also, it feels like there’s a spirit at United that we haven’t seen for a while.
‘It feels like that’s coming back. I think there’s something happening at Manchester United that I didn’t see with those other managers. So it’s worry, yeah.”

Things could get even more exciting for fans as news of a takeover gathers pace.

Man Utd women’s players ‘DON’T want Mason Greenwood to return to the club’ after star striker was accused of rape

MANCHESTER United’s women’s players don’t want Mason Greenwood to return to the club.Players are reportedly set against the idea of the 21-year-old ever running out at Old Trafford again, despite the attempted rape charges against him being dropped.

According to reports in The Athletic, “the feeling is strong” amongst the team that Greenwood should be let go.
They cite an audio clip released on social media last January, which was alleged to be a recording of the player forcing himself on a woman.
This has apparently made some players “deeply uncomfortable” with the prospect of him pulling on the red jersey again.
Likewise, furious female United fans have demanded that he be released from his contract.

This feeling is reportedly even shared amongst his teammates in the men’s dressing room, who are not all in favour of having him back.
The striker is currently suspended by the club, pending an internal investigation.
Charges of attempted rape, assault and coercive control against the star were dropped earlier this month after several key witnesses withdrew.
It comes after a PR expert exclusively revealed that United or, should the young star be sacked, any club looking to sign him could lose “millions” due to fan and sponsor backlash.
    Most read in Football
David Alexander, managing director of Calacus PR, told The Sun Online: “It’s impossible to put a figure on the impact of United choosing to retain Greenwood, if that is what they end up deciding to do.
“But with corporate partnerships being significant, the financial impact could easily run into millions.”
He concluded that the Manchester ace may have to go “beyond Europe” to a country where “women’s rights are not as advanced” to re-launch his career.
It comes as the England international is rumoured to be lining up a major transfer to China, which could see him take a large pay cut due to the Chinese Super League’s salary cap on foreign players.

Similarly, top sports lawyer and former pro player David Winnie told The Sun Online that Greenwood himself could have lost a similar amount after being dropped by major sponsor Nike.
Manchester United have been contacted for comment.
