      The sign-touching incident preceded Man United losing the Premier League clash 7-0.
      Weghorst explained his touching of the sign on social media saying: “Normally I never react on media topics, but for this one it’s worth it because you amazing United fans are so important to me.
      “So I just want to clarify the video that is doing the rounds.
      “From the national team, I know that Virgil always touches that sign and I went to stop him touching it to try and wind him up before the game.

      “As I child I supported FC Twente and as a proud player for Manchester United, my dedication to this incredible club can never be questioned.
      “Sunday was a terrible day for all of us, we are putting everything into making it right in the next weeks.
      “We will bounce back together and achieve our aims this season.”
      However, fans have not bought into his explanation as one posted a GIF of Will Ferrall in the film Anchorman saying “I don’t believe you”.

      United fans were quick to tear into the Dutchman after seeing the footage, so much so that he gave a lengthy explanation on social media.
      He said: “Normally I never react on media topics, but for this one it’s worth it because you amazing United fans are so important to me.
      “So I just want to clarify the video that is doing the rounds.
      “From the national team, I know that Virgil [van Dijk] always touches that sign and the only intention I had was to stop him touching it and wind him up before the game.

      Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester United and Manchester City have all been linked with the ex-Birmingham City academy player.
      We reported last month how Newcastle had now joined the transfer chase, while Real Madrid have also held a heavy interest in signing the teenage sensation.
      Los Blancos have been trying to work on a deal for some time with their chief scout Juni Calafat already “taking care of relations” with Bellingham’s father, Mark, who manages his son’s career.

      But there was a growing feeling that they “are becoming resigned to the fact that the financial muscle of the Premier League is almost unbeatable”.
      However, a fresh report has now claimed that talks are happening TODAY between the two camps.
      Foot Mercato say: “According to our information, a meeting is indeed underway between the father of the England international and Juni Calafat, director of international football for Real Madrid, and responsible for recruiting young players on a global scale.”
      The French publication added that the “meeting is at the Chelsea Harbor hotel in London” and that Madrid “will present its project for the playmaker” in it.

      But behind the scenes there is increasing speculation that the two most prominent members of the Glazer family are seeking to engineer a buy-out of their siblings to ensure they remain at the United helm.
      And that could spark a fan backlash in the wake of Sunday’s humiliation at Liverpool.
      It has been known for weeks that Joel and Avram are the least-minded of the six brothers to sell up.
      While the other four want to cash in, they are understood to feel that the club can add value with internal investment, including on the proposed Old Trafford replacement, making a future sale even more lucrative.

      That split within the family has been blamed by some analysts for the sales process – which started in November and has a deadline of the end of May – being on a go-slow.
      And it has now emerged that there is a growing belief that the two board members are ready to get into financial bed with Los Angeles-based Ares Management to put together a deal their brothers will accept and to remain in charge at Old Trafford.
      Ares, which has assets of a staggering £246bn, is one of four US hedge funds which has signalled its willingness to help finance a deal to run United.
      New York-based Elliott Management, which made it clear it was seeking to fund a bid rather than take over the club itself, was the first out of the blocks.

      Two other financial giants, Oaktree – which helped Chinese conglomerate Suning take over Inter Milan – and MSD Partners are also interested.
      But the growing belief is that Joel and Avram are ready to partner with Ares to make an offer their brothers cannot refuse – and effectively park the proposed club sale for the medium term.
      The potential involvement of Ares is something of which the two announced rival bidders are aware with a recognition that such a financial model would be in keeping with the general approach of the Californian outfit as investors rather than company owners.
      So far the sale has been going at a glacial pace, with the second bidding stage meetings, expected to take place next week, only a precursor to the full demands of the potential owners.
      There is surprise that it seems the Glazers’ chosen deal-makers, the Raine Group, want to eventually open up the club’s “data room” of financial information to each bidder in rotation, rather than simultaneously.
      Issues such as tax, legal and property due diligence, existing contracts and player information will require huge dedicated teams of specialists to scrutinise before the bidders can come to a more fixed valuation.
      There is also some feeling that if a sale was really at the forefront of the Glazers’ minds, they would have already chosen one “exclusive” bidder access to try to force an acceptable offer.
      The Glazers have shown over nearly two decades that they are rarely moved by negativity from the club’s fan base although withdrawing the “for sale” boards now could bring the most sustained response yet. More

      Meanwhile, a report from The Athletic suggests club scouts have been watching Tammy Abraham.
      The two Englishman would represent an interesting new attacking dynamic for Erik ten Hag next season.
      This season the club’s top goalscorer has been Marcus Rashford with 14 Premier League goals.
      However, with the potential arrival of both Kane and Abraham that burden would be eased.

      And it creates the prospect of a new-look United attack.
      Should Ten Hag stick with his favoured 4-2-3-1 formation, Abraham may be pushed out wide to allow Kane to operate as the main striker.
      But Kane’s ability to drop deep and spray passes could see Rashford and Abraham performing inside-out runs in a similar fashion to Son Heung-min at his best.
      The duo could effectively form a front two while Kane drops deeper alongside Bruno Fernandes to help create chances.

      Erik ten Hag could adpot a more classic 4-4-2
      With United also eyeing Frenkie de Jong, Casemiro’s midfield partner could also be revamped.
      Another look at the team could see Ten Hag move to a classic 4-4-2 formation.
      This would likely see Antony come in at right-wing, while under-fire Fernandes is not afforded a spot in the starting XI.
      A goalkeeper change could also be in the works, with SunSport revealing the Red Devils are interested in Leeds’ Illan Meslier as David De Gea’s future remains uncertain.
      Alternatively, a more experimental United formation could see them switch to a back three.
      Rashford and Abraham could run the channels with Kane free to roam behind them and pick passes and shots from deeper, while Fernandes partners Casemiro in midfield.
      Harry Maguire could then slot into the back three on the right side of defence.
      This may allow him to replicate his England form with more freedom to play out and more cover when defending thanks to Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez.
      But before any of this, United will face off against Real Betis in the Europa League looking to bounce from the 7-0 humiliation handed to them by Liverpool.

      Osimhen’s shot conversion also has the edge over the England captain.
