Betis were followed by 3,900 fans to Manchester for the first leg of the round of 16.
And it kicked off after Bruno Fernandes netted United’s third goal when a group of 50 of them started to cause trouble in the ground.
A police officer was struck by a firework, while United supporter Louise Rigby says that her eight-year-old autistic son was hit by a coin, but was luckily not hurt.
She told MEN: “They were throwing sausages, hot dogs. Before the match even started they were throwing lighters and euros and packets of tissues and plastic drinks cups. We were getting stuff thrown all over us.

“Once our third goal went in, that’s when it turned nasty. They were jumping over the barriers and throwing things. One coin hit my son on the back of the head.
“He’s got special educational needs and we were sitting in the disabled area. We go to every match. There were a lot of people in wheelchairs and they were all getting things thrown at them.
“It was absolutely appalling. I’m all for rivalry but last night was so uncalled for. They were setting off flares and all sorts. They were throwing pints and other items. Even before everybody got a sense something was going to erupt.”
Footage has been shared on social media of the scenes breaking out as riot police moved to the away end.

In other areas fans were spotted ripping seats off in order to throw it at the United fans.
In another case, one fan was filmed repeatedly spitting at the home end as stricken stewards were piled on.
While a Betis fan masked in a balaclava could be seen attempting to swing his belt across the narrow gap in an attempt to hit home supporters.
According to MEN, United officials will hold talks with the Manchester United Disabled Supporters’ Association as their seating is below the away section.

The report has also suggested that club insiders believe more trouble comes from European games than domestic ones.
Greater Manchester Police [GMP] have confirmed that they are working with Spanish authorities and the two clubs following the incidents.
GMP did confirm that the away fans lit flares and pyrotechnics inside Old Trafford and have also insisted that the majority of away fans were “respectful and well behaved”.
Four Real Betis supporters were arrested for violent disorder, assault, possession of flare inside the stadium and possession of a controlled drug.
Chief Inspector Jamie Collins, GMP’s match commander on the night, said: “The violent disorder experienced does not reflect the majority of supporters attending this fixture who went just to watch the football on the pitch.
“Last night’s behaviour by the minority was totally unacceptable and quite shocking for the decent supporters who may have got caught up in this.
“We are also continuing to offer the welfare needed to support one of our colleagues who was injured as a result when trying to keep the public safe.

“GMP are working closely with Manchester United, the UK Football Policing Unit, Real Betis, UEFA and Spanish Police colleagues to identify those involved in a post-match investigation which is ongoing.
“If any supporters from Manchester United or Real Betis and those attending the game have any information or footage that can assist with enquiries, they are asked to contact Greater Manchester Police on 101 as soon as possible so we can bring those responsible to justice and also to seek, where possible, football banning orders.” More

Bids from British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe and a Qatar investment group so far appear to be the favourites in the fight for ownership of Man United.
But another bid has reportedly emerged from fan-led group Red Devils United.
CBS reports that the group are “developing” an offer for the club.
They said they want to use “the collective power of Manchester United supporters to regain control of the club that they love.”

The bid is believed to be a mix of private investors and fan-funding.
Any fans backing the group are being asked to buy NFTs in return for “membership and some control over decision making.”
Red Devils United are yet to formally enter the bidding process.
They said: “This will be the first time the club has heard of this project. We will send details of this proposal to Manchester United and will invite questions from the club, their representatives and the fanbase.”

Group representative Lorenzo Alessi added: “The mission behind Red Devils United is to revolutionise and democratise elite sports ownership by giving supporters a voice at the highest levels of the game.”
This is the latest twist in the ongoing saga of Man United’s ownership.
Earlier today Elliott Management were revealed to have made it through to the second stage of the sales process.
The American hedge fund have submitted an offer which is open to all parties.
But they are reported to not want to buy United outright and instead offer financial backing to any groups who are interested.

Reports earlier this week suggested investors from Elliott were willing to stump up cash to help improve Old Trafford.
The group are believed to be willing to finance £2bn towards stadium improvements.
Red Devils United and Elliott Management are the latest groups to publicly declare an interest in the bidding process.

McTominay, 26, has started just seven Premier League games this season, only one of which has come since the start of October.
And Parker, who won two league titles with Man Utd in the 1990s, believes a move north of the border could be on the cards for the Red Devils man.
Speaking to MyBettingSites, he said: “I think it could be a possibility for him to go to Rangers. He is not good enough to play for Celtic.
“There is no way he would be able to play regularly for Celtic in the way they play. He will have a better chance of playing if he moves to Rangers.

“But it’s a big decision for him to leave Man Utd. But he has to do it because right now he is also playing jeopardy with his spot in the national team.
“He can be a sub for Man Utd but if he’s got anything about himself he wants to play as many games as possible.
“Right now his career isn’t something to write about and he needs to show that he is hungry enough to get a decent career.
“I expect that he wants to leave Man Utd to show that he is a good player.”

Ten Hag said of the Frenchman: “I’m sure a striker like he is will improve our team.
“You always need different qualities in a squad to be technical in games and between games, see what you need, what the games need, but Martial can create something with his movements, his dealing with the ball, his smartness and his finishing.”

Marcus Rashford opened the scoring after six minutes but on-loan Leicester striker Ayoze Perez equalised just after the half hour mark.
But the leveller was controversial as Perez’s team-mate Juanmi appeared to handle the ball in the lead up to the goal.

VAR did not intervene as it was deemed accidental because it came off the chest onto the arm.
Further, as the handball came during the build-up and not from the actual scorer, the goal was allowed to stand.

It left Owen Hargreaves to say: “It was still handball, wasn’t it Scholesy?”
Scholes replied: “It was a handball. It was not accidental.”
Hargreaves agreed: “Yeah, he actually meant it. Look where his arm goes. He almost goes to catch it with one arm.
“Even if you were playing with your mates in a training game in a park, you would say handball.”

Scholes then added: “If you look closely, I think it touches his arm first anyway. It’s arm on to chest. But these rules are stupid aren’t they?
“A handball is handball. It led to a goal and it should have been disallowed.”
United boss Erik ten Hag could breath a sigh of relief as second-half goals from Antony, Bruno Fernandes and Wout Weghorst gave his side a healthy advantage.

Their recent disappointments mean another season without silverware is guaranteed for England captain Kane – who has never won a major trophy.
And with his contract up at the end of the 2023/24 season, a departure from his boyhood club seems more likely than ever.
United have also been linked with Napoli sensation Victor Osimhen.
But, according to Manchester Evening News, Ten Hag has prioritised Kane to reinvent his attacking line-up this summer.

He attempted to leave the club in 2021 but Spurs chief Daniel Levy blocked him from joining Manchester City.
Now, though, the forward has more bargaining power given he is preparing to enter the final 12 months of his contract.

Benfica’s Goncalo Ramos and Ajax’s Mohammed Kudus are other potential acquisitions.

Owen Hargreaves ‘amazed’ by ‘old school’ Man Utd player and says fans will want to see more of him

OWEN HARGREAVES has been left amazed by one “old school” Manchester United player after the Red Devils’ win over Real Betis. Following a tricky first-half, United pulled away from their Spanish opponents to give themselves a commanding 4-1 lead for the second-leg.

Much of the damage had already been done by the time Facundo Pellistri came off the bench for Antony with eight minutes to go.
He made an immediate impact off the bench which led directly to Wout Weghorst’s goal.
Almost straight after coming on, Pellistri received the ball directly from Bruno Fernandes’ out-swinging corner.
Despite Real Betis defenders charging towards him, the 21-year-old dribbled around the outside past two men before sending a drilled cross back in.

Scott McTominay’s shot was blocked before Weghorst pounced on the rebound.
That was the high point of Pellistri’s cameo performance and it left BT pundits and former United players Paul Scholes and Owen Hargreaves impressed.
Asked by presenter Jules Breach why United fans don’t see him more often, Hargreaves said: “I don’t know.
“I was amazed how quick he was. A lot of the guys, like Jadon [Sancho] and Antony, they like to dribble and slow down and come inside, but he doesn’t want any of that.

“He just [likes] getting on the outside, old school, just sprinting past people. And it’s good to see because when he does that, the centre-forwards know when the ball is going to come in, where the other wingers take a lot of touches.
“Scholesy’s right, that was a brilliant cameo. I think United fans would love to see more of him.”
The Uruguayan winger signed for the club in 2020 and has been tipped as a potential star for the future.
But he has found game time very difficult to come by this season with only four appearances in all competitions this campaign.
Reports had suggested he could move on loan in January but Pellistri eventually stayed with the club. More

Ex-Man Utd coach explains why ‘party animal’ Anderson was a flop and how Fergie ‘wanted to hit him with a stick’

A FORMER Manchester United coach has revealed why “party animal” Anderson never succeeded at the club and how Sir Alex Ferguson “wanted to hit him with a stick”.Mick Clegg, who has also revealed how Fergie was good at boxing and that Roy Keane did not like Teddy Sheringham, was employed as a Power Development Trainer by the Red Devils.

It was while he was working at Old Trafford that the club splashed out to sign Brazilian midfield star Anderson from Porto after he was spotted by the manager’s brother Martin Ferguson.
He came with much promise after winning the “Golden Boy” award two years before his arrival.
But despite winning the Premier League four times and the Champions League, the South American struggled overall to make an impact at United due to injury and fitness issues.
He eventually returned to his homeland with Internacional in 2018.

Now Clegg, who spent four years from 2007 working with Anderson, has provided an insight into what the issues were.
He told The Athletic: “Anderson was one. You could never find a nicer person, he was popular with everyone but he was a lazy bleeder.
“He always had his excuses. I used to have a stick and I said to Alex Ferguson very early on, if he carries on, I’m going to hit him with my bleeding stick.
“Fergie couldn’t believe it. ‘Don’t you dare. He cost me a lot of money. You can’t be hitting one of my players, are you mad?’

“Then, six weeks later, Fergie came to find me. ‘Where’s that bloody stick? Give me that stick. I want to hit him’.”
Clegg added: “Anderson was more than capable of being an absolute stormer of a player. He just needed his head knocking. He didn’t keep fit.
“He chose not to put in the work, so it’s hard to have too much sympathy for him. He was a party animal.”
