But they could not spring the 25-year-old from the Nou Camp despite De Jong being involved in a pay dispute with Barca.
Now any potential transfer looks even further away after the midfielder pledged his future to the Catalan club.
He appeared to hint at a long-term stay in Spain as he made clear he wants to play at the newly renovated Nou Camp, which will not be completed until the 2024-25 season.
De Jong, who signed for Barcelona from Ajax in 2019, told TV3: “I hope I will play at the new Camp Nou.

“Barcelona is the club of my dreams, so I plan to stay for many years.
“It looks like it’s going to be nice. The plans for the stadium are very good.”
Speculation has continued that United could try to land de Jong when the window opens this summer.
His former Ajax manager Erik ten Hag is known to be a big fan but eventually settled for Christian Eriksen when it was clear the deal could not be done.

Transfer links to Man Utd have drawn comparisons with legendary Red Devils forward George Best, regarded as one of the greatest players of all time.
Following a stunning goal against Atalanta, ex-Inter Milan striker Christian Vieri said: “The goal he scored was the stuff of madness!
“If he goes to Manchester United, the days of George Best will return. Kvaratskhelia is the same.”
Arsenal legend Thierry Henry has backed up this claim too.

Ahead of Napoli’s Champions League last-16 tie against Eintracht Frankfurt, Henry told CBS Sports: “He can press. He can hold the ball. He can see a pass.
“He’s just the full package. Hopefully, it can carry on for him and they can win the league.
“If they don’t win the league, it will be crazy because of the number of points that they have ahead. Winning the Champions League will be crazy.”
Napoli have forged an 18-point lead at the top of Serie A to put them in a strong position to claim their first league title since 1990.

Back then they were inspired by Argentine legend Diego Maradona, and shortly after arriving Napoli fans dubbed Kvaratskhelia as “Kvaradona”.
And the Georgian has done the name justice, scoring 13 goals and adding 15 assists in 29 appearances this season.
One of his breakout performances came against Liverpool when Napoli tore the Reds to shreds in a 4-1 demolition in Naples, with Kvaratskhelia shining against Liverpool’s defence.
He is also the Italian league leader for goal-creating actions and sits second only to Rafael Leao for successful take-ons.
Despite comparisons to 1968 Ballon d’Or winner Best, United will face competition to sign him from a number of clubs.
Newcastle, Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid are among the sides said to be in the race to sign the highly-rated winger. More

Despite only arriving at St Mary’s six months ago the midfielder is already being linked with a move away.
Belgian journalist Sacha Tavolieri has said United and Chelsea are leading the race for the 19-year-old’s signature.
Tavolieri adds that Manchester City remain in the race due to having a buy back clause inserted in the contract when they sold Lavia.
Chelsea are in the market as they search for a defensive midfielder which will allow Enzo Fernandez to operate higher up the pitch.

Despite heavy investment from owner Todd Boehly the Blues don’t have a holding midfielder amongst their ranks following the departure of Jorginho to rivals Arsenal.
Alongside Lavia, Graham Potter’s side have also been linked with moves for West Ham’s Declan Rice and Borussia Monchengladbach’s Manu Kone.
For United the Southampton man doesn’t represent their first choice option.
Erik ten Hag wants to pursue a deal for Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong who the Red Devils were heavily linked with last summer.

The Old Trafford outfit have also been linked with a summer move for Rice and Borussia Dortmund’s Jude Bellingham.

The Red Devils’ only other options are Marcus Rashford, who has been in superb form this season, and the injury-prone Anthony Martial.
The Old Trafford club will likely spend a large fee on bringing a striker in this summer.
The two big names being linked are Tottenham’s Harry Kane and Napoli’s Victor Osimhen but Scholes think’s Maritnez would be a good choice.
Scholes spoke to BT Sport on Thursday night following United’s 1-0 over Real Betis.

“I think he is a Ten Hag type of player, he likes a centre forward that will run about, be aggressive, get against people.
“I like United’s current options, I like Rashford, I like Martial, but Martial just can’t stay fit. So there are options out there.”

The winger, who boss Erik ten Hag has confirmed will be sidelined long-term with an ankle injury, has also had things to sort regarding his international future.
Garnacho was born in Madrid and has represented Spain at youth level but qualifies for Lionel Scaloni’s World Cup winners due to his mother being born in Argentina.
He initially received a call-up to the South American country’s senior squad for two World Cup qualifiers a year ago but did not make an appearance in either game.
After scoring four goals in four caps for their U20s to help them win the 2022 Maurice Revello Tournament he then missed out on the squad for Qatar in November.

That allegedly led to Spain getting back in touch with him to try and persuade him to switch his allegiance – but Garnacho allegedly politely declined.
He was then included in the Argentina squad for their upcoming friendlies with Panama and Curacao only for the blow he suffered against Southampton on Sunday to rule him out.
Bernardo Romeo, coordinator of Argentina’s youth teams, was the one to reveal to publication Ole that the United ace “had been called by the coordinator of Spain’s teams”.
He said: “Alejandro Garnacho was very clear, he told me that he answered him out of respect, but he has decided to play for Argentina.”

Romero added that the attacker “is very convinced of playing for the Argentine National Team. You enter the house and he has all the photos with Messi.”
Garnacho, who moved to Old Trafford from Atletico Madrid in October 2020, said after he pulled out of the latest Argentina squad: “It is difficult to put into words how I feel at this moment.
“I am disappointed to miss the opportunity to be with my teammates from the Argentine national team, in what would have been a great moment of pride for me and my family.” More
